PI mission dump release
This is like the model dumps that some people occasionally post, but consisting of missions. :D This is a half-finished version of my now defunct campaign, The Procyon Insurgency. Basically, what happened with this is that I had almost finished the campaign a year ago, when my hard drive broke and I lost about six months of work on it. However, I still had a (very) outdated backup with old versions of the first 11 missions, which is what I'm putting up here with a few adjustments. I thought I might as well release these missions since it's very unlikely that I'll do anything further with them. Think of this as a self-contained episode if you will, although there is no ending. Get it here:

http://home.comcast.net/~cp5670/PI.zip (22567647 bytes)

I spent a few days going through the missions and fixing up various bugs and balance issues that I had resolved later on or that had come up more recently, but it's possible that I missed one or two things. The 11th mission from the backup was more of a framework, only about 20% complete, so I spent some time finishing it up since it was originally one of the cooler missions. I won't have time to redo all the rest anytime soon though.

This campaign requires FSO, as it uses a few of the new features from that. However, I would strongly recommend that you use a build older than 3.6.7 for now. The 9/17 build, available here, works very well, but 3.6.7 and any newer CVS builds seem to be very unstable with these missions for some reason. I'm getting random crashes to varying frequencies with everything since 3.6.7. I had originally done most of my testing with older versions like 3.5 and 3.5.5 and everything worked okay until 3.6.7, so just use anything older than that until I can figure out what's going on. If you run into any other problems, post about them here.

You can use the standard mod command on the PI.vp file (put it in its own folder), but give it priority over the media vps if you're using them in their own directory with the multimod feature. I don't think any command line flags are necessary except for -jpgtga, without which the backgrounds won't show up. However, I would recommend that you not use mv_models.vp, at least for now, since I noticed one instance where things became significantly harder because of a slightly different subsystem placement, and most of the new ships are also missing the insignias. And as usual, make a new pilot to avoid any table conflicts.

The missions themselves are decent, but you'll probably find some aspects that could use improvement. I am not quite happy with several of the earlier missions in what's now their current state and had originally made a number of changes to them. The third mission in particular is crap and I had rewritten a totally different one from scratch in its place. The later missions are much better though. Unfortunately, the missions that came after 10 were the really good ones and were mostly lost, although I redid the 11th one as I said earlier. The 12th mission in this package is just a stupid test mission that I was using to try out things.

The extras zip just contains some notes and junk I had lying around in that was eventually incorporated into the campaign. I thought I might as well throw that in.

Most of the non-table related mods used in this aren't mine. They were made by various people, although I lost the credits list in that HD crash and can no longer remember who made what. If you see something in there that looks like it's your work, it probably is.

Have fun and post your opinions/spoilers/strategies/rants in this thread.

Re: PI mission dump release
Would it be feasible to have the FRED academy finish this like they were planning on doing with NTV (or did that fall through too)?
Offically approved by Ebola Virus Man :wtf:

Re: PI mission dump release
I don't see why not, if anyone is interested. I might have redone everything myself but it's hard to get one's enthusiasm up after a setback like that, and I don't have nearly enough time for it these days anyway.

*downloads*

What happened to your computer to make it lose all that data?  There are programs that can recover things off of corrupt hard drives...

Re: PI mission dump release
Sort of a long story, but it somehow started to give all kinds of SMART errors and throw up bad sectors over the course of a week or so and refused to spin up on boot most of the time. I tried quite a few different programs for this sort of thing and nothing worked. The only option left was to send it to a data recovery company like Ontrack, who would have probably been able to get the stuff but would have charged a few thousand dollars for it, which wasn't really realistic for me. I still don't know exactly what happened to it, but at least the warranty replacement was a bigger model.

Re: PI mission dump release
:bump:
Any thoughts?

Use allslev to skip to the later missions if the earlier ones seem boring. :D

Re: PI mission dump release
Sorry to hear this. I was looking forward to this campaign, it seemed to be shaping up as the thinking mans freespace, correct me if I'm completely wrong, what with all the political background info.

I'll download it for a try but probably wont get around to it very soon.
Watch out for the Guns! They'll getcha!

Re: PI mission dump release
That's exactly the style I was going for with the plot. :) I thought that fit in well with the feel of the original campaign and had built up a pretty intricate backstory for this. I actually probably went a little overboard in some of the later missions in terms of the amount of briefing/debriefing text, but I guess more details can't hurt. :p

Re: PI mission dump release
There are, but they're included in the vp. (along with everything else that is needed) What error are you getting?

The easiest way to play this is to create a folder and put the vp file in it, and then have the launcher select the folder as a mod. Also, make sure you don't have any existing tables in your main \data\tables directory.

Re: PI mission dump release
i have no table files of any, just the new vp files.....and let me put this error i got : ok i can't type it in all nor paste it here, but the error is Invalid ship class name......like every ship class in FS2.  said some tech-add-ships.

alright another problem ok i put PI in a folder and put in the 9/17 build, and ran into another problem......something with the new capguns on one of the vp files.....take it off or figure something out???

Re: PI mission dump release
Crap, I thought I tested all this mod related stuff. I'm pretty sure that one of the media vp tables is somehow interfering with the PI ones, but I can't imagine why.

Try this: put PI.vp in the main folder, rename it to API.vp, turn off mods in the launcher (select "no mod") and then run the game. It should take precedence over the MVP stuff without needing the mod switch.

If it still doesn't work, see if you can list all the vp files in your main FS2 directory and I'll try to figure out what's going on.

Is anyone else having any problems? (if you tried it out)

Re: PI mission dump release
The only thing I can think of there is that it's running out of memory for the adveffects stuff, possibly due to the new background graphics. How much system/video memory do you have?

I suppose the problems are only in the tech room though, right? Do the missions themselves work okay?

Re: PI mission dump release
missions works fine, i'm on the 3rd mission, when some of teh ships are like half gone and half shown.....so i don't know how much my video memory i have.....

Re: PI mission dump release
oh, I thought you were only getting it on the Shivan stuff. That's not good. Just to make sure, you have jpgtga enabled in the launcher, right? (if you can see the backgrounds in the missions, you have it on)

Re: PI mission dump release
yeah i got the jpgtga on.   backgrounds meaning the nebulas stars..etc?? if so then yeah lots...
