Author Topic: Very bad FPS  (Read 2912 times)

I've recently downloaded and installed fs2_open using current cvs downlaod (my compile is about 2 days old) and I'm experiencing very bad framerates (lower than 1fps sometime its even worse with about 0.2fps) from time to time. The strange thing about it is that it doesnt matter which grahic settings im using (tried everything between low and very high) and it happens only in some situations and starts from absolutely fluent gameplay (more than 40 felt fps - is it possible to display'em?) and goes down to a very slow "slide show" rapidly (from 1 moment to the other) and goes back the same way.

this happens very often when looking at large ships and firing a lot of rockets on'em, firing rockets in nebula, ...

now some details on my machine/compile:
CFLAGS: CC="gcc" CXX="g++" CHOST="i686-pc-linux-gnu" CFLAGS="-march=pentium4 -O3 -pipe -fomit-frame-pointer" CXXFLAGS="-march=pentium4 -O3 -pipe -fomit-frame-pointer"

my hardware: intel pentium 4 (ht - 3ghz, 1mb l2-cache, 800mhz fsb), ati radeon 9600xt 128mb, 1gig dual-channel 400mhz ddr-ram

hope some1 can help me ...

iirc isn't there a bug at the moment regarding frame rates and missiles?

Go back to the latest RC build, the average joe shouldn't really be using a CVS build anyway :P

I'd say it's rather difficult to use D3D anyway on a Linux system... ;7 At least I understood that Superdreadnought is running FS_Open on Linux... If you're not, then the rest of this message is null.

May we assume that you have correctly configured your ATi drivers? I suppose that would be the most probable culprit to your problems.

What does the GLXGears say?

Frame rate per second can be activated by command line option -fps.

There are three things that last forever: Abort, Retry, Fail - and the greatest of these is Fail.

my startup params (if it helps): -spec -glow -jpgtga -mipmap -missile_lighting -dualscanlines -targetinfo -orbradar -rearm_timer -ballistic_gauge -3dwarp -warp_flash -snd_preload -env -alpha_env -d3d_bad_tsys -mod mediavps

so, where can i get the release candidate source?

From this thread: 3.6.9 RC7

Source tarball can be dloaded from the first message.

You are probably better off getting it from CVS rather than the currently available source tarball.  The stable branch has the tag, "fs2_open_3_6_9", so just grab that.  If you want to keep up with both branches then create a new one for the stable branch with "cvs co -r fs2_open_3_6_9 -d fs2_open_3_6_9 fs2_open" and that will grab the stable source tree and put it in a new directory named "fs2_open_3_6_9".

Hey! Nobody welcomed Superdreadnought yet! So...

Welcome to the HLP Station. Exits are located to the right, left, up, down, and 4th-dimensionally. However all of them are blocked, except the 4-d one, and no one's yet figured how to reach it. In the event of a landing of any kind, you can and will be used as a flotation device. We are currently suffering from technical disruptions from time to time, which may cause the lights go out at any instance, and sometimes even the basic life support fails for some time. At these times, stay calm and composed; for these cases the station system automatically drops a computer from the roof above you with FSO installed and ready. They have independent power sources. Please keep all appendages within the installation at all times. Do not feed the resident Shivan Carl as he will become voracious and chew your leg off. You can find him in the ventilation duct. Throw him your lunch and he'll leave you alone (usually). Flamethrowers can be found under your seat but due to financial constraints have been re-filled with holy water. Phased Plasma rifles (40 watt range of course) can be found in storage lockers. To prevent act of n00b, however, these can only be opened by Moderators, Volition or a hyperintelligent shade of BluE. Please remember that any attempt to use the ASCII characters 0046h, 0053h, and 0033h in sequential order will result in you being trampled by FreeSpace fan boys. Your trampled remains will be fed to Carl so that the rest of us don't have to carry around so much food for lunch. Please try to avoid all flame wars that can flare up at any time in various parts of the station. If you go in the Vasudan section of the station and find a box labelled “Headz”, please don’t open it. In the event of catastrophic hull failure please board the nearest lifeboat which is pre-programmed for autonomous flight to our sister station the Game-Warden outpost. Thank you and enjoy your stay at Hard Light station as long as you will!

You are my first kill!
