Memories
Okay Beta, form up, we've got to scout out this node before we take the convoy through. As he traveled to the node, Beta 3 skimmed one of the transports, and saw the face of a small boy gazing out at him. He flashed back to when he was a child, crammed into a transport in the process of evacuating the infested Capella system.
We're almost to the node, prepare for jump. The voice came over the comm as he watched the other transports in their group. A fighter flew by, close enough that he could see the pilot, a tiny figure compared to the machine he controlled. The pilot glanced in his direction, not a scratch on his fighter, as the Shivans hadn't yet decided to attack. The pilot waved, and did a graceful backflip before speeding away to join his comrades at the rear of the convoy. Moments later the view was obscured by the blue/white blur of subspace.
He never got to meet that pilot, who had turned away from the node at the last minute to save a transport from an incoming bomb that would have destroyed it, allowing the transport to escape into subspace as the supernova shockwave bared down.
Beta 3, come on, we've got a job to do. He was jolted out of his ruminations by Beta leader. He looked over at the face in the porthole and a grim smile came to his lips. He rolled his fighter into a corkscrew before he powered away toward the node.
