By this I mean constant use of different font other than the standard in one's posts. See Mobius and Black Wolf for example. Please vote but if you really want to reply to this topic, refrain from insults and flames. I only want to see what the general community thinks of colored posts, not the persons posting them.

With this, we get a bloody rainbow everytime I want to read something, if you're a big contributor and the admins deem you "Custom Font-Worthy", great, but it really is going to become over the top like avatars would be if we allowed everyone to colour their posts differently.

Actually the problem wasn't so bad when it was just Black Wolf and Maeg doing it. Neither has a very large post count considering how long they've been here. So you're not rubbing up against their posts all the time. The problem with Mobius doing it is that he posts all the time. He has 12,000 posts in 3 years. That's as much as both BW and Maeg put together in one fifth of the time.

So his using a special font is going to be 5 times more annoying.

I think it's ok if some users ( for whatever reason - reward for anything the user did for the community, or punishment for...odd...behaviour ) use custom fonts, i rarely see Black Wolf posting and Mobius custom font is already part of the...HLP experience  ( no insult intended, he already used it as i joined HLP).

Allowing it to everyone could turn HLP into the Rainbow land.
I doubt most of the old-established would make use of that, but most newbies would.

I think yes, only the we should have the option to turn it off. as in, If I don't like reading in blue italics, I press a little button under mobius's post that says "ignore user fonts" or something like that. then I wont see LGM's posts in blue italics.

It's pretentious. But then again, so is the right to freedom of expression.

Should posters be able to? Of course. Should they actually be doing it? Probably not. Should people get their own custom color tags? lol.

Note: Maeg's font has been green since the invention of the internet. BW is Australian. There are some exceptions to the rule. But I'm not sure what kind of message you're looking to send with custom user tags. Not that any of it really matters, because at the end of the day, they're colors

I think the fact that thought and discussion has been kept away from individual matters such as this and more on collective interests such as FSO has been the main reason that HLP has thrived. No avatars, no images in siggies, no custom font colouring. Call it communist, but just look at how well HLP has thrived after...what, nine years? that's a lot for a fourm, and even more for a game community, if you ask me.

All the individuality that we need should be kept in names and titles, like what we have now. Titles should remain under control of the admins only, so they mean something. Badges are earned, as well, to make them important. Signatures shouldn't be anything other than text, because images and colors attracts more attention than they deserve. I think the font used by posters should deserve no more attention than signatures.

This idea I like, though. Signatures work the same way. Still, I would prefer the basic concept of HLP to be focused on posting content rather than the context. It's like eating a rainbow coloured cake that tastes like ****.

I wouldn't mind seeing the admin's posts coloured, though. It would greater remind us of their position as the leaders and administrators of this community. The fact that they have avatars is plenty fine, though coloured text would be even more powerful.

I tend to ignore discussions like this, they're locked in a matter of hours, but I'm posting here because the whole "colors" problem started because of me. My only mistake is being active so that a lot of members can see colored posts - no one complains about Black Wolf or Maeglamor simply because they're not as active as me.

No one is supposed to read colored posts unless he wants to, right? So why start the issue when you can simply boost up the ignore options of HLP to make sure that my posts will never, ever appear in front of your eyes?

Other than this, I don't see the problem here. The whole "no colors" issue started off simply because I'm very active on these boards, check the time I spent online for confirmation.

And stop with the "people who use colors feel special" thing. It's not true, ask me or Black Wolf and find out. Most of the people who complained interpret the use of colors as a way to feel superior. Well, I think condemning the use of colors is a way to feel superior. How do you deal with this?

Everything started peacefully, without any problems. Me and Maeglamor got a tag, and we're using it. Administrators get avatars, and they use it. Some members have particular signatures, and they keep them. Most members have a particular behavior (which is a problem, unlike colors), and they keep it. I don't really understand why colors are a problem, really.

If you want HLP to be a better place, just cut the spam, play FreeSpace 2 SCP, FRED, mod, texture, contribute to the Wiki and so on. Removing the colors isn't going to change anything. If the Administrators are convinced of the fact that removing particular writing styles would somewhat be a good thing for the community, I'm afraid they're totally wrong. Spam and the lack of seriety are problems here - I don't see what's wrong if a very, very limited number of members post in colors.


P.S.

My personal request to the Administrationship is: improve ignore options so that anyone who hates colors is free to ignore me and my posts. Exaggerated request? Maybe as not as exaggerate as forcing people to change well fixed habits.
