The Perseus and the background don't fit together because the mountains, clouds and water are all affected by a red light source, while the fighters are not. Wash the Perseus in red and it'll look much better.

Look at the layout of the mountains compared to the position o the sun  

The farther in the background the less direct light reaches the river's surface/


(or at least that's the line I'm going with for right now   )

I see what you mean. I didn't think of it at the time because the transition between reflecting water and shaded water was so sharp - perhaps if you made the transition more gradual, it would look better-er?

If possible, I'd add in a lensflare behind the ships as well as a distortion effect to make it appear as hot air is being displaced as the ship moves.

Finally I'd also make the contrails appear as a very light viney texture which peels and fades as it grows longer. (such an effect can be easily done in photoshop)

Actually, I was referring more to a Martian kind of environment plus water. Since the mountains were a bit redish, I thought about Mars and came up with the ideas.
