Alrighty, here goes number two.  I still want to do some weapon effects and sheild impacts but I haven't gotten around to it yet.

Very nice! obviously with weapons fire it'll look better, but so far so good  

How did you do those engine glows?

Looks like standard glows behind the Seraphim and in front of the Serapis. (What's with the Serap- prefix?  ) Nice job, Ice! Shield impacts eh? Ambitious...

Nice but a bit too sparse for a background. Weapons fire would be nice.

Shield impact effects huh? Can't wait to see one though.

Engine glows are two layers.  One layer is a lower opacity spray brush.  The layer on top is blended using the Dodge function of PSP and using a brighter color.

Not too bad... Only thing I can really complain about is that you need to adjust it to make the lighting more realistic. The Shivans are way too lit up for ships with the sun behind them...

But if you made them any darker, wouldn't that make them almost too dark to see?? I mean Shivan ships are all black and red.

Yes, but effective shadows are very impressive. Too many times in pics, the lighting on a ship is just plain wrong for the scene it is. Ships near a red sun should be washed red. The side of a ship opposite a star should be shadowed.

You're right, you have to make some concessions to make the ships show up, but they can still go quite a bit darker IMO. If you could make it so that the fighters were completely shadowed except for the glow cast by the Shivan trademark Red Lights along the hull...
