Title: Future Of HLP
Post by: Brick79410 on June 12, 2017, 03:35:10 pm
In the past few days I have heard about the closure of fan-made gaming discussion sites ( namely CNCNZ for the Command and Conquer series ), and this made me fearful for the future of HLP. Do we have any status updates on how HLP is doing financially? It would be a shame if this community and all its projects and history were to shut down.

Long live HLP!

As far as I know, money is not the biggest issue here. Condition of worldwide modding scene is getting worse due lack of mod support by up-to-date current games.

Play campaigns, use models and stuff, make your own projects, write lots of comments... And HLP will live.

I'm fairly certain that somebody would've mentioned it before now if the server operating fund was getting low.

I can say for a fact HLP is working on keeping modern and fresh as best it can.

But if you are worried, make or play some content. That's what keeps the site alive.

(Sorry for double post)

On Topic: HLP should be fine, but it could not hurt to get some recognition, The XP Gamers did a spot on Freespace a while back and he only mentioned diaspora and assumed HLP was gone.

Ars Technica did a thing on how Freespace was the best space combat game ever about a month ago, with no reference to HLP at all.

And Scott Manly (As awesome as he is) still has yet to play FSO outside of diaspora. . .

I'm not asking for HLP to have a MASSIVE SURGE In popularity, and diaspora is great in all, but. . .  It would be nice if people could at least do us some justice here and show who we are from time to time.

(Sorry for massive amounts of edits, English may as of this post be my only language but I am by no means good at it)

Just this week the Neverwinter Nights-modding community got a new spotlight on GoG.com (they had one before that 7 years ago, according to GoG's own archive) ... maybe when the next big release comes around that makes full use of SCP features, there could be some sort outreach to GoG to place another "spotlight"-ish content...

EDIT: If you are reading this after Monday, 7/19/17, 10 am (GMT+1), I already made an inquiry with GoG's community specialist ...

This is one reason why I keep cheerleading Knossos development. Once we have that it doesn't really matter which FSO game gets you into the game, all paths will lead back to HLP.

Everyone should cheerlead the Knossos development

K is for Knossos!
N is for the number of new players it'll attract!
O is for Open Source Software!
S is for Size, increase the playerbase's!
S is also for slick user experience!
O is for the face I'll make while I use it! My o-face!
S is for Some day love will find you, break those chains that bind you, one night will remind you, how we touched and went our separate ways!

I will happy cheer the development on with that song!

Since we're already talking about Knossos: A new version has been released (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=93642.0) (Fair warning: It's not ready for every-day use since it can't properly launch mods, yet.)
Now I just need to finish the development tab which will let you add, edit and upload mods. Then I can fix the currently available test mods to make them playable (if you try to launch them now, you'll only get FSO + retail data).

Every once in a while a post comes along that makes me regret the lack of upvote / rep buttons on this board.

You'll have to settle for

I  fly around in some other forums. Maybe there is an HLP banner that  i can put into my signature.
And perhaps there are more of us, who would do that.

Considering the sheer amount of time HLP has been with me, I would be sad to see it go. Good news is, it will probably be here to stay no matter what. At least as long as I keep donating 80$ each Christmas and there are 11 other people doing the same (and Axem does not die or something).

Random idea: set up a bitcoin / etherium / whatever's all the rage that we can donate to.  I think light-duty mining shouldn't be too hard.  I could be sorely mistaken, I haven't researched this at all, I just had this idea reading that post is all.  Anyone here have experience with mining that can tell if this is a great, horrible, or meh idea?

That seems much more complex than just setting up a patreon, or the existing donation system (http://www.hard-light.net/about/support). I guess maybe there'd be people mining where they didn't have to spend money but would the number of people doing that make any significant amount of money vs. a few extra people giving a dollar a month?

If you can help it don't get involved with cryptocurrency. It's a mad, mad, world out there and you'd best just stay away.

I wasn't thinking of anything serious, just, if my GPU (when I finally get one) is idle, I might as well use it to get HLP some cash (I'd not set the load high, though, I don't want it to burn out or anything).

But yeah, probably not worth the hassle I guess.
