Title: [RELEASE] Ancient Armamentarium Pack
Post by: Nyctaeus on July 24, 2017, 12:18:21 pm
A thread for my Ancient models releases. Recreational project without any specified goal other than having fun and practice of semi-organic geometry. I mostly upgrade already existing models and bring them to acceptable standards.

Thanks for the ship you modeled specifically for my Shattered Stars project, as the Galactic Rim Worlds corvette. However, I still need textures, namely creating the PBR assets plus the AO.

I actually modelled it without purpose and without any project in mind. Just something I wanted to make, but if you found this appropiate for your project, you're also welcome to use it as whatever you want.

I cannot actually help with PBR textures, as I'm just starting my experiance with Substance Painter and stuff. Glosiness, roughtness or whatever maps you need to make is up to you. The only thing I can do is AO bake. Grab it from here (http://www.mediafire.com/view/724sad2bzla5a9l/IraklionAO.png).

Nice job! ASW is pretty much my favorite mod ever, so this is a real treat to see. :D

It is my favorite mod as well :P. I really regret that it died, and third chapter won't be made. At least I can make some Ancient starships. Perhaps one day I will update ASD Minos and other older ships.

I tried to resurrect that a few years ago based on the Dump. But unfortunately i was only able to work out a complete campaign script of act 3 part 1 and finished some of the unfinished missions from the dump release aswell i had created some of my exclusive planned missions... even only two of them were nearly completed. But i simply lost motivation after that.

And another idea about an Aesdherian side story failed because the Nightmare fleet that was used for them, does not even have freighters and cargo containers :D.

Iraklion is actually associated with Unborn Legacy project idea, not with ASW at all but Unborn Legacy was supposed to keep ASW as canon. An alternate story, where unknown race influenced late stage of Ancient-Shivan war, destroyed the Lucifer, and saved their empire from destruction. Ancients were supposed to be enemy for GTA and PVN later. I made Iraklion basicly because I needed to find a vent for "how cool that thing would be!" feeling... And later forget the idea. Heart wanted to make it, but mind said "No!" :P. Another offshot of that idea is AD Chania destroyer, used in Exile. I have unfinished frigate somewhere on my HD, but both Chania and the frigate are worse than Iraklion in terms of quality.

I love FS1, and I love Ancients... But I already have too many projects on my head xD. Perhaps if anyone would like to continue ASW, I would apply for such project as model and background creator.

Thanks for that map, Nyctaeus. You are my contributor for the Shattered Stars project, as well as others.

This. I'd sign on as a FRED'er if I wasn't doing anything else. :P

I'm making more for pure fun and I need more practice with semi-organic shapes. This is textured rebuild of Minos superdestroyer. Sorry for black lines artifacts. They somehow appeared with high-res DDS to low-res JPG conversion and won't be present on actual model.
Basicly nothing spectacular as I have no time for serious modelling to FS actually. I love this design, so it's significantly updated version is the last WiP stage.

I used to be good at this :P.

This thing is too strange and too cool to escape my attention. Will be released when I'm done with mapping erros.

Does anyone know what the purple growths are actually supposed to be?
Title: Re: [RELEASE] Ancient Armamentarium Pack

They remind me of the sensor avionics on the Malia (http://hard-light.net/wiki/index.php/AC_Malia), so that's always been my theory.

Precisely why I was looking for it. Looking forward!

Yeah, probably advanced sensor arrays. Same things are present on Heraklion and Phaistos [freighter] but are covered in different texture so they are not distinguishable.

I like them. Makes this set of ancient ships look exotic and alien, matching my vision of Ancients at all. Achladia for example was originally a vasudan destroyer. Odigitria, despite being the coolest looking and most unique Ancient warship from ASW, has the same history. While i like ASW models, I want something more crazy. I always imagined Ancients to be aquatic species, or living in somekind of liquid at least. While I don't want resemblences to fish at all, inspiration taken from earth creatueres living on extreme depths are welcome. Minos matches this setting and TBH is probably the best Ancient fan-made warship I've ever seen..

Gorgeous Minos mesh you made! I've downloaded it. For my mod as the Svaamin. What about the AO/PBR, once more?

As for other Ancient ships, what about the AJ Androgeos?
Title: Re: [RELEASE] Ancient Armamentarium Pack
Post by: Nyctaeus on August 28, 2017, 02:37:56 pm
Juggernaut is a big deal. I love Androgeos, but I already have other candidates both from ASW and OTT modeldump. In fact I have frigate and destroyer halfway completed, so if I decide to go for another Ancient ship upgrade, I will probably chose something already started.

I'm pointing at niche and trying to figure out what's missing in the community available assets. I made Iraklion because Malia from ASW is only released HTL Ancient cruiser. As for juggs, there is Akrotiri but I guess you already have it.

As for AO, be my guest (http://www.mediafire.com/view/vccg4fz1dh5xyc3/MinosBake-ao.png).

Thank you for that.

As for other candidates both from ASW and OTT modeldump you speak of, you are referring to the Pylos, the Malia, the Heraklion, etc. And what of Ancient installations such as Thera?
Title: Re: [RELEASE] Ancient Armamentarium Pack
Post by: Nyctaeus on August 29, 2017, 11:53:43 am
HTL Malia is done by FSF and it's awesome. I may bake it to rid off tiles completly. Heraklion is on my list. Pylos won't be done as it's in fact - stretched retail Seraphis model and it's not worth rebuilding. Thera is not imaginative. I'm thinking about making Ancient installation with original design.

Next model is actually AFg Moires (http://www.hard-light.net/wiki/index.php/VECv_Geb) - Anti-fighter, escort frigate, logistics vessel and tactical carrier.

It's like Starbug's frigates Heracles and Tempest from his United Terran Republic fleet.

So do I. My favourite of the Ancient ships (Not sure why everyone's used the Akrotiri and why i've never seen the Androgeos used, but hey, preferences). In fact, if you overhaul the Androgeos, I will give you this entire jar of internet cookies i've been saving for years. Don't let the age put you off - they're still fresh.

That thing looks like a giant spiky ball of adorable fluff and I would love to see your take on it.

Well... That's this kind of offer that I have to consider at least :P.

Really? It looks like a redone version of the Androgeos. I'm loving it, and I wish to contribute more, given I worked with you on the capacity in doing my engines and my dorsal fin.

What about VLS-style torpedo launchers? I thought Ancients don't have the capability to launch missiles from capital ships. Whether against fighters, bombers and other craft...

Thanks, but I can handle it myself. I have all sections of the ship planeed. In fact I'm enjoying making Ancient geometry.

Sorry, it will be full plasma cannons based. Turret setup and everything will be similar to Androgeos from ASW3 dump. Torpedoes of all kind doestn't match my vision of Ancients at all.

That's what I wanted for my protagonist fleet in my total-conversion mod.

However, I would like to point out there are some subsystem errors in the Minos HTL model. I don't know whether they are table-based or POF-based.

Code: [Select]
Warning: Not all subsystems in model "GRC_Svaamin.pof" have a record in ships.tbl.
This can cause game to crash.

List of subsystems not found from table is in log file.

Bryan, if you read the error messages, you will see where the errors are.

Thanks for clarification, Captain Obvious.

Turret 41 had no pof data. My bad. Bryan, go ahead and download fixed version from first post.

You know, it's funny. I've been thinking about how I would approach the various canon and fanon factions in FS -- post-Capella Terrans and Vasudans, Sol-system Terrans, Ancients, Shivans, Nightmares -- and trying to come up with distinct aesthetics and weapon styles for each. I ended up having the Ancients use heavy torpedoes. Now when I say torpedoes, I don't mean missiles. I mean gigantic, heavily-armored, turret-wielding monstrosities that are launched from the fighterbays because they don't fit in torpedo tubes. Basically just fighters set to kamikaze, from a gameplay standpoint.

I like ASW approach - Smaller ships are based on large amount of fast-firing blob turrets. Corvettes and destroyers have dedicated, also fast-firing cannon turrets. I made my Ancients for somekind of alternate reallity, where they survived because something helped them by destroying the Lucifer. Limited usage of beam cannons fits to Ancients in my opinion. Minos is supposed to be armed with plethora of heavy cannons similar to those from ASW, but spinal turret was supposed to be some remaining beam cannon. Perhaps BGreen equivalent.

Torpedoes are quite low-techish for me. My interpretation of Ancients is suposed to be sophisticated and exotic race, and both FS1 and FS2 shown why. All all projectile-based weapons are

Torpedoes fits to terran the most, in my opinion. If I am the one, who decided what each race should be armed, I would go with railguns and torpedoes for GTA, plasma cannons and swarm torpedoes for Vasudans, beams for Shivans and plasma cannons for Ancients.
Guided energy weapon is tempting. Basicly a standard torpedo from gameplay standpoint, but with invisible model and laser bitmap instead. Or... Perhaps no bitmap or trail, but particle generator? I succesfully made one of my favorite weapons from Exile with sole particle generator. Guided energy weapon would fit to Ancients due to exoticness of something like that, but I would use this for Nightmares instead.

I was thinking of the Nightmares as using pulse cannons of some kind, maybe something like the original Shivan Super Laser from FS1. No beams, though -- I kind of don't like beams, as a gameplay element. They tend to be overpowered and difficult to balance around, and plus, they're not nearly as dynamic and satisfying as something like a torpedo. I mean, it's just the ship switching on a weapon, and then damage happens -- compare that to something like watching a swarm of Apocalypse torps muscle through a Deimos's anti-fighter screen and slam into the hull. And even with pulse cannons, you get to see the projectile moving. (Also, my version of the Nightmares would need to be visually and mechanically distinct from the Shivans. I've actually had a pretty detailed concept of them bouncing around in my head; I'll probably post a writeup on it at some point.)

There's another wrinkle with the Ancients, which is that the Akrotiri has that giant dish thing on it, which looks kind of odd as a pulse cannon. Really, it looks like it ought to be some kind of laser reflector.

Originally it was a beam cannon. Both Inferno, Procyon Insurgency and Blue Planet use a beam cannon on that turret, and it's actually the only kind of weapon that fits to turret model like that. Akrotiri main cannon from ASW is kinda awkward, even in the latest version made from artillery cannons from Shadow Genesis. Akrotiri has indeed a cool design, but this oversized cannon is ridiculous. Sometimes I think I would like to see Androgeos with large amount of classic Ancient Cannons instead.

I prefer to arm my ships in large lumbers of smaller cannons. In fact I prefer to use railguns and torpedoes of any sort more than beam cannons. Battles of my ships last longer due to more sustained way of dealing damage, and are much easier to be balanced. Limited usage of beam cannons on ORS and EFN ships in Exile was in plans, but it was scrapped in favour of railguns and torpedoes.

Thats more or less why I keep mentioning ASW. Both Ancients and Shivans use plasma cannons of something like that. I love it! I love ASW at all :D

I need to finish Procyon Insurgency. I got a decent amount of the way through, but aaagh the difficulty. Yeah, I'd heard it was originally a beam, and figured since it was an Inferno model to begin with that they'd given the Ancients beams for some reason.

I did really like the Shivan pulse guns in ASW, although it was hilarious to see the big spike cannons on the Sathanas shooting off these piddly little projectiles. That mod also had some really neat fighters, but as usual for FreeSpace, the heavy assault ended up being better than everything else.

I like the guided energy projectile idea, but I can't begin to imagine how one could justify something like that. I have a hard enough time with the slow lasers as it is...  :P On the other hand, I guess that makes it a viable candidate for mysterious ubertech.

In fact, if you overhaul the Androgeos, I will give you this entire jar of internet cookies i've been saving for years. Don't let the age put you off - they're still fresh.
Well... That's this kind of offer that I have to consider at least :P.

The only betrayal you've ever committed is betraying my expectations, because that thing looks amazing.

You can have my entire cookie jar and then some more when I find them at 70% off in bulk online.

I remember the fun times I used to have long, long ago in the early days of R1 pitting this thing against whatever I could just to see the sheer amount of beams coming out of it. Entire weekends gone just like that!

I know you've mentioned you're modelling this based on ASW-style weapons (which makes me think, I should add that to the ever-growing list of things I really should play through), but that isn't going to stop me from eventually replacing them with beams and reliving my previous explosions in glorious HD.

Honestly, this was great to see. Thank you.

In this case, the Minos, whose having subsystem problems on table, is used as my mod's Svaamin cruiser.

That's... Well. I guess it's appreciated.

Turret41 is fixed in recent version. I guess FSO may find destroyable bubbles as not-recognized subsystem type. Screw that, debug will always complain about custom subsystems but they will work anyway.

:bump:

Silenus and Corybant are now released in the first post. Credit to FreeSpaceFreak for models, conversion and stuff. Those are his models taken from ASW3 dump, and I only made textures for both. Tables are ASW-compatible. Silenus comes with three versions of glowmap so pick the one you want. Those lack shield icons, but I currently have no time to make it.
