Just finished Revolutionary Girl Utena a few weeks ago.  Then watched the film Adolescence of Utena.  BRB, trying to find my brain.

Re: What animes/series are you watching right now?
Sorta soft-dropped Re:creators. It just got kinda boring and they keep stalling the plot.

That's ok though, this season is so good. Symphogear AXZ, Isekai Shokudou, Princess Principal, Knight's and Magic (knights and magic is bad but it's mecha CGI candy). What else? New Game!!, Sakura Quest (still running, probably one of the better cooldown animes).

Also the Gamers! OP has a Parody of PLAYERUNKNOWN'S Battlegrounds for 3 seconds in it, if you're into fanservice moments. Teen romcom otherwise so maybe not that high up the chain.

Also also Made in Abyss is supposed to be pretty good, and the 10 minutes I watched of it were very pretty.

First 4 minutes of the very first episode of Kill la Kill is something that utterly anihilates the meaning of "over the top". I'm seriously doubting I'll manage to even finisht the episode.

Have you watched Gurren Lagann? It's a similar type of show. I love Kill la Kill but it's a weird show but it has a lot of creativity and toying with expectations behind it. If that style of show isn't your thing I get it but I certainly think it deserves most of its popularity.

Finished GATE. Meh. 5/10.

I never managed to watch too much but the impression I got was that they really needed to be clever about making the fantasy world competitive with modern military power.  Instead they made all the enemies completely idiotic and the show never rose above just a Oorah gun porn curb stomp.

That def. would have made GATE better than it was. But I kinda liked the realism of it just being a total romp -- the real problem was that if there wasn't going to be any military anxiety, the characters needed to be freaking amazing and talking about big ideas, and the evil Americans needed to play a bigger role, etc. etc. But yeah, there was just not enough of anything in that... damn shame too. It was promising

Re: What animes/series are you watching right now?
No question a medieval era army by itself is never going to stand up to any post industrial military force, but if the creators had eventually leveraged magic or other fantasy elements to some create some kind of asymmetric parity it would have done a lot to keep things interesting.  As it was the baddies stopped being any kind of threat after the first episode, their continual tactical ineptness in the face of overwhelming firepower coupled with the main antagonist being comically evil and stupid drained any tension out of the proceedings.  Instead of doing anything interesting with the concept, the show devolved into a repetitive JASDF **** Yeah! circle jerk with some clunky Harem elements.

My problem with it was that there's nothing in there that works like some sensible foundation where you can place nonsense on top. One Punch works ridiculously well because it establishes both the common sense ground and the nonsensical premise at the same time, where those two can contrast and give meaning to the comedy. If everything is nonsense and over the top, then it's just silliness on top of silliness and it's boring as ****, it's meaningless.

I have to be fair though, I really only watched the first four minutes before the protag reaches that ... uhhh ... "school". I couldn't take it anymore.

There is a problem with Kill la Kill as subtle thoughfull points which are contrasted by ott action and fanservice-heavy visulas rely on an intricate wordplay in Japanse - as such it is not quite the most accessible show unless you are there for the over the topness of it all...

Faithfully it should translate to uniform not suit - that the first episode opens with a bored class being lectured about fascism is not cooincidence :)

Re: What animes/series are you watching right now?
Kill la Kill is indeed over the top (overall more so than Gurren Lagann) and its themes stay buried for the first 1/3 of the show pretty consistently in favor of lulling you into thinking it's going to be another high school battle show.

If you're watching the official subtitles for it, they're pretty garbage. Most fansubbers translated it to "Ultima Uniform" and generally did a better job with wordplay.

That opening 4ish minutes is a lot of what you'll be in for. The main and supporting cast pretty much all go through some kind of arc and aren't just over the top silly but it takes a bit to get there.
