Title: Inferno: Nostos Discussion 1
Post by: Woomeister on January 19, 2013, 04:59:09 am
Inferno: Nostos arrives this summer!
The Inferno Team would like to officially announce that Inferno: Nostos, the 10th anniversary remake of the original Inferno: Release 1 will be launching this summer 2013 in time for the 10th anniversary of the original R1 release. The conclusion of the campaign from the arrival of the Gigas onwards will be a seperate release at a later date to allow us to push the quality of the conclusion to maximum.

Features:
Missions: 30
- Complete standalone mod package that doesn't require the original FS2 Retail or Media VPs to run
- Improved missions from the original R1 and more brand new missions, more than doubling the original R1 campaign length
- One of the largest modpack fleets ever assembled surpassing the original FS2 retail ship limits
- Improved HTL versions of R1 models and many more new ones
- Brand new weapon effects and new weapon designs as well as revamped R1 classics
- Several new music tracks as well as upgraded R1 music

Required:
FSOpen 3.6.14 Inferno build or higher (Windows build included in download)

Differences to R1
- General Quality increase in the main campaign, both Freding and story wise
- New ships and some ships replaced
- Inclusion of more FS2 era assets such as the Deimos
- Campaign increased from 14 to 30 missions
- Surviving R1 missions brought up to the standard of the new ones (note: not all R1 missions are in the new campaign)
- Campaign ends with the end of the EA war and not the arrival of the Gigas

Below is a complete list of the contents of the Nostos ship.tbl split into FS1/2 Retail ships, ships that were in INFR1 and ships that are not from FS2 and INFR1.

Q. What happened to the Gigas and Icanus?
A. The Gigas model is incomplete and the Icanus has not been started, since these will cause a large delay they have been removed for now and will be included in the 2nd release.

Q. What happened to the super carriers?
A. Gone and probably won't be coming back, the smaller carriers will have a larger role instead.

Q. Why are there few Vasudan ships?
A. The Vasudan fleet is still being worked on and most of it isn't required till the latter half of the campaign, to allow more time to bring these up to quality unused Vasudan assets will not be included in the first release.

Current Status:
Missions are around 2/3rds fully complete with most missions 1-20 in final bug testing phase and the rest in progress.
Models we are waiting on the final 10 HTL models, most are in the final modelling phase or in the texturing phase.

Q. Do we require testers?
A. Not at this point in time no.

Q. Could we use some help in other areas?
A. We could really use anyone who has experience in model convertion using either 3DS Max or Blender, we could also possibly use an artist capable of designing a high quality EA logo or CB animations.

I'm happy my built-in release translator works. Summer instantly became Winter in my mind.
And my room dropped a good 20 degrees celsius as well. :)

Can't wait to play Inferno. Have heard so much about the Original, and cant wait to finally see what I've been missing out on. :)

Dare I ask how many more?
Will the cut fleets (SOC, Ancients) feature again?
Why are there two Mihos?
Am I asking too many questions?
Should we start a fund for the treatment of abused ship.tbl?

Will the cut fleets (SOC, Ancients) feature again?
No for the SOC fleet (though the SOC will) but yes for the Ancients. The Ancients fleet will feature in a sub-campaign called Gateways which may release at the same time as the 2nd release depending on how things go, if not it'll be the next release after that. The Ancients fleet consists of mostly Inferno Ancients ships upgraded by the ASW team and a few of their specific ships as well, but not the entire ASW Ancient fleet.

Why are there two Mihos?
One's Terran and carries Terran only weapons, the other is Vasudan and carries Vasudan only weapons

Yay, new Inferno. It's going to be fun to torch a lot of pilots and crew.

I wonder what kind of logo you'll want for the Earth Alliance... is it going to be another bird with its talons over Earth? Or are you going to have some swirly-galaxy logo with Earth in the center? Or will it be like the logo from Babylon 5?

That massive amount of ships, there be a lot of lore to cover... whew.

Also, since I like to change the color of my HUD elements... are you going to provide some "fiery" HUD schemes or do you have any recommendations on how I should change them?

Title: Re: Inferno: Nostos Arrives this Summer!

Good luck.

When I joined HLP just over a year ago, it was recommended to me to wait until this gets it's remake. I've stayed away from Inferno entirely since then to avoid spoilers and will continue to do so. However, it looks like much of the campaign will be fresh and new anyway.

Right now we're quite open to anything, but we don't have a dedicated artist to make things like logos and cb anis, and there's a lot of cb anis this time.

For the Terrans the Jotun is the super bomber, it's much larger now than it used to be at 104m long. Making it the 2nd largest bomber (the Vindhyachal is 3rd largest at 94m)
The EA one is there too, though that's smaller at 73m, the rest will be added with R2.
The Stheno will be the main large bomber for the GTVA during the Nostos campaign and that's 56m long. The Jotun's for later but the mesh is ready and 100% complete so we might as well include it.

woohoo - I thought I won't live to that moment. Now I have to stay alive till summer.

Anyway, what are the settings of those screenshots? Did Blue Planet spoiled me or are these a low settings screenshots?
Title: Re: Inferno: Nostos Arrives this Summer!
Post by: Woomeister on January 21, 2013, 11:24:42 am
Default launcher settings, using glow, shine and normal maps and slight reduction in ambient factor, why?
Title: Re: Inferno: Nostos Arrives this Summer!
Post by: mr.WHO on January 21, 2013, 11:48:50 am
Well the first screenshot is kinds scary ugly (epecially the flame/explosion).
The capship textures (maybe except Shivan) also seems to be not so detailed (Shivan also, but these are not as visible as others).
As for the rest they are OK, but as I said the Blue Planet graphic spoiled me much.
I'll play the Inferno anyway (10 frikin' years of waiting comes to the end).

Edit: Lindos Texturing seems to be nice, but I can't say why the other capship textures looks bad/overstreched for me.

What happened to the Notus? Was it scrapped?
Title: Re: Inferno: Nostos Arrives this Summer!
Post by: Woomeister on January 21, 2013, 11:58:05 am
Well we use tilemaps as there's no way we'd get high quality UV textures done for this many ships and manage a release date, there's nothing we can do about that unless 5 or more texture artists decided to volunteer to redo all the capships, freights and transports etc

You'd be looking at around 40 ships just for the first release alone, so that's a massive job, well unless you want use to delay it another 5-10 years :p

Notus was removed before the production of this version of Inferno began, there's no real need for it and it was actually smaller than the current Jotun is :nervous:

I know you're using a stretched version of the HTL Jotun for this but could you also release the "short" Jotun in some form?
Title: Re: Inferno: Nostos Arrives this Summer!
Post by: MatthTheGeek on January 22, 2013, 02:01:20 am
Depending how how it was streched, you could always re-tweak it back to "normal" with PCS2's rescaling functions.

Yeah but there would be a real noticeable difference between the Jotuns and the other Inferno ships if it was shrunk

Only the fuselage is stretched, and it seems like it was elongated by hand, rather than stretched using a transform function. However, they also showed a version of the model with the original proportions, which is the one I'm thinking of.

Also, wasn't the original Jotun actually 55 m, not 70 like some people believed? The thruster flames added length to it.

At the moment no, a large chunk of our fleet has corrupted UV on their turrets caused by 3DS Max conversion for resmoothing the meshes, we'll have it fixed before release but we can't produce teaser shots of the affected ships until it's fixed. We actually want to replace the entire turret set with new high poly turrets but we don't have anyone dedicated to returreting everything.

There's also some stuff in that list we don't want to show before release, though one of those isn't finnished yet so we couldn't show it anyway :)

For those wondering there's the Jotun next to a few of the other larger bombers. The Jotun has 6 turrets and is the only bomber that carries the Executioner. The Stheno is similar to the original R1 Jotun in size, and appears near the end of the first half of the campaign. The Jotun won't arrive officially till the latter half of the 2nd release.

The Titanis looks like a larger version of the Peregrine.

So hopefully yes, if not soon after.

Indeed the last few models that require completion are quite big endeavors, and certain members (such as myself) have RL issues to attend to.  But it will be released in all its glory (and it is quite glorious) in the best shape possible.

Subsequent releases will be done through patches. These patches will include new ships, upgrades to existing ships, changes to missions, and of course new missions to continue the storyline.  We wanted to go for this model instead of the evenly distributed R1, R2, etc. so to shorten wait time.

I know I saw it said somewhere, probably in this thread, that they're not going to make the summer deadline.

As betrayal says the mod will be done when its done. I am sure they are working very hard to get it done, but remember they all have real lifes which must come first and they work on this in their spare time. Please just be patient :)

Sorry, I won't pester them again.  I'm just really looking forward to it. :D
It's my most anticipated campaign to play (though Dusk Wars 2 is a close second).

Just out of curiosity, do you know what the size of the campaign will be?  Around 1GB?

Compressed? I'm not sure yet.
Uncompressed the main data folder is over 4GB right now.

About how large BP is... but with voice acting... Holy crap. D:

Well remember that this is a standalone build so it has to include all the FSU models and maps from the mediavps with it. 2.11GB of that size is the maps folder on its own since we're using many 4096 and 2048 size textures

Wait, nuINF is standalone ?

What is the point of going standalone if you're going to carry with you all the stuff you were trying to separate from to begin with.

All the while removing the data sharing and easy upgrade capacity the use of the MVPs give you.

Not to mention the legality of using so much retail FS stuff on something standalone.

Because when this decision was made was when INF Builds were not the norm and would break other mods pilot files. To prevent that from happening it was decided to make it not run on top of regular SCP.

Media vps aren't actually compatible with the mod due to the changing from FS2 retail tilemap naming conventions which broke all the ships (we use the original FS2 retail names still) so we'd have to edit 150+ pof files to use the tilemap package that is now classed as legacy and so we run the risk of it getting removed at some point, so we'd have to include all those maps in our base install cause they are required for it to work.
The music tbm also seems to have issues working with our music.tbl and causes an outright ctd when used together. The HTL Arcadia that's going to be used in the media vps isn't compatible with our extensions, so we can't outright use all the mediavp versions of specific models as well.

Not much of FS2 retail is left there now actually, most of the FS2 retail models still used are replaced with community upgraded ones from the media vps, and that's a small chunk of the total ship list. The only major files still used are the basic interface art for all the menus.

So this will be like Wing Commander Saga standalone in that we won't even need a copy of FS2 to play Inferno:  Nostos?

Exactly. You just need decent computer and OpenGL drivers, like recent FSO and newest mods.

I hope it's not too late to make a minor suggestion:

A thing I had a minor dislike about in Inferno R1 is that we didn't really get to understand what the terms of the GTVA-EA armistice were after mission 14.  The debriefing text said numerous concessions by the EA were made but didn't say much else.  Would it be possible to add a few more sentences in the final mission debriefing to elaborate more on what the terms of the armistice were?

As far as I am aware but don't take this from me, the new Inferno will basically end after the Battle of Earth and then pick up with other releases, so I don't think we'll hear anything about an Armistice in Nostos but again, I could be wrong.

Well the last mission hasn't been made yet but something like that might be better to be added to the command brief of the first mission of the second chapter, since there would be more room to go into detail there.

I don't want to give another eta in case we don't make it again, since that would be further disappointment.
Once we are 99.9% certain we'll be pushing more stuff out to show before the release.

Completion of the Sol Gate is taking longer than expected and is our next major milestone. With that complete we can finalise the first 2/3rds of the campaign and only have to worry about the assets required for the final mission.

The Terran fleet is ready apart for the Bastion and the Sol Gate, the Arcas and extension HTL models will have to wait for R2 as those are going to take a few months and would increase the delay to unacceptable levels now.

The EA is missing 1 model for the final mission. The Icanus won't be done till the next release as that model is proving difficult to upgrade at this moment. After that there's only a few minor things like a sentry gun and support ship.

The Vasudans, thanks to Dagger are in a far better position now. They are still missing major models but not for the first 30 missions so there will be no delay there. Major missing models for R2 are the Vasudan flagship and carrier.

The Shivans are good to go, only the Gania and Gigas need to be completed there for r2.

You have to admit the thread title kind of invites a lot of "Are we there yet?" questions.

To be fair the thread was made back in January when they thought they would be able to make the release.

The original planned date was July 16th, but we hit several snags in March and April that massively slowed the progress level down further than anticipated. We also knew that several staff members would start to become busy from around August onwards which is why progress has been slow the past few months. It's also why I won't commit to a date again till I'm sure we'll actually make it this time.

It's better to let this stand. No project has yet to dwarf ST:R's amazing optimism, this might be the first :P.

Keep up the fine work, gentlemen :).

Like what Woo said, several key members including myself are busy with real life.  I for one started residency training so all my free time is gone.

A sizable part of a tree fell on my house this summer so I've had to spend a great deal of my spare time repairing and remodeling.
