Title: Overload
Post by: jjscott on February 13, 2016, 12:49:07 am
Hello Hard Light Productions,

This is the very first time I post to these forums, so my apologies in advance for any breach in protocol.

I just wanted to let the members of the FreeSpace community know that Revival Productions has launched its Kickstarter campaign for Overload, a six-degree of freedom shooter. Here's a link to the page: http://kck.st/1o2XmtY

Revival Productions is Mike Kulas (founder of Volition), Matt Toschlog (who founded Parallax with Mike), and former Volitionites Luke Schneider (aka Radian Games) and Chris Claflin.  A few of us at Volition are also helping out, including Adam Pletcher and myself.

I'm not sure how much cross-over there is between Descent and FreeSpace players, but I thought that maybe you'd be interested in learning more about this game.

Thank you for your consideration, and I wish you all the best!

Kind regards,
Jason Scott
Writer, FreeSpace 2

Woah! So that's what Mike's "secret project" was. It looks very cool, thanks for posting about it!

(and you've got Dan doing the music as well, and yourself doing the story, very awesome!  My biggest issue now is stopping my enthusiasm running away with me)

ps: thanks for supporting Linux :)

Hehe, yeah some people over in gaming discussions (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=91512.0) noticed it alright. There's quite a number of descent lover here.

To quote The E :

Also, this is probably the most HLP-baity Kickstarter ever....

A pleasure to see you there sir. :)

Unfortunately the forum search is, uh, more-or-less completely useless, so no worries there.

Here's hoping you guys reach your funding goal!

Nice to see people from :v: on HLP. First a new Descent, maybe you'll make a spiritual successor of FS2 next? :) Mission-based space sims are coming back, so it'd be nice to have a well written entry in this category (not to mention on that comes with a mission editor :) ).

I'm watching Overload, but see the other thread about it for my concerns over design philosophy.

Saw some info about this a while ago. Cool to see some of the Descent/FreeSpace team doing something again! There is definitely quite a bit of crossover in the fanbases from everything I've seen. I'm glad to see 6DOF coming back, especially with you guys working on it again!

Great to see you here, Jason!  We were all delighted that you sat down to chat with General Battuta about the FreeSpace storyline a few years ago.  The storyline is probably one of the three principal reasons (along with ease of modding and the source code release) that the game is still played as much as it is.

Overload looks awesome.  Count me in.

Woah :D! It makes me thinking about all the uber cool Descent III levels I enjoyed as a kid. It reminds me charging my Fusion against final boss, smashing robots with Black Shark missile, and epic outro.

And yes. I want to experiance all of this again! Goodluck with Overload, guys. I wish I could contribute, but... I'm broke :P. So far I can say that I can't wait to play this!

I hope you are fine. More than a decade ago, I played Descent 2 and Descent 3, and FreeSpace 2, but forgotten. Now I'm playing FS2 Open, and I'm working on its mod named Shattered Stars.

I'll always have your guys backs for stuff like this, and you have my $150 for this.

(BTW, as a side note. When done with this, should Revival Productions decide to make a completely new game about humans and a race of desert dwelling aliens who humans had originally been at war with that formed an alliance against a race of super-death-aliens long ago, who cut off earth from the rest of the universe, blew up the desert alien's home world, and blew up a star the second time they were encountered. You know, a completely new IP unrelated to any existing IP that is... something along those lines. You would have my axe and bow and money for that as well. possibly an order of magnitude more so than this time.)

(ALSO BTW, just FYI I am on the Linux platform, I see you are supporting me  )

Hey Jason. Thanks for giving us so much to work on these past fifteen years. :) Hope things work out with Interplay.

The announcements have mentioned 'combat and exploration' as being key gameplay elements. It's a long shot, but... I would LOVE to see Overload take inspiration from the Metroid series, and use weapons and ship upgrades in lieu of the key system.

For those of you not familiar, this would mean in place of a 'blue door' that only opens when you have the 'blue key', instead you would have a green door that only opens when shot with a plasma cannon. So upgrading your arsenal also allows you to backtrack and open new areas. You could also use the afterburner to push through areas impassable by normal thrusters, use the headlight to illuminate hidden switches, etc.

If all the levels were interconnected (instead of vaporized as in previous games) this could be a far more entertaining experience, instead of a retread of older mechanics. Just a thought.

A Descent-like metroidvania sounds like it would be an... interesting experience.
Title: Re: Overload
Post by: Dragon on February 16, 2016, 10:15:22 pm
It wouldn't really be Descent, though. Those games were always level-based (like FS is) and IMO, were better off for it. There are other games, for example Sublevel Zero seems like a 6-DOF Roguelike (meaning it's of little interest for me after all. I don't like permadeath and all this "roguelike" stuff). Personally, I think that the only element of Metroid that could be of use in a Descent game is the badass female protagonist. Other than that, I see no point in messing with the Descent 3 formula, as it'd be more likely to end up like Miner Wars (6-DOF RPG with geomod. How awesome could that be? Not very, it turned out).

Using AB and headlight to reach secret areas is another story, but it was already in Descent 3. In fact, D3 used it not only for secret areas, but in some case AB was necessary to progress through a level. In one case (Expediator engine chamber) that part was absolutely infuriating, especially if you liked flying the heavy fighter. The same level had a switch that could only be reached with a guided (as in, manually controlled) missile. Once again, it was a part of the main progression and a rather frustrating part at that (at least they had the decency to put a dispenser making those missiles right next to a shaft into which you had to launch them). So all in all, while certainly a possibility, I think it should be relegated to secret areas and used sparingly.

I'd rather have them include clever, but not too convoluted puzzles.

Post by: ChaosityZ on February 17, 2016, 10:50:22 am
I purchased every Descent (and FreeSpace) game as soon as they were released, and have enjoyed every one of them.  Descent 1 and 2 have such simplicity, and a great replay value.  With a busy family life, I rarely have any time to sit down and play a game, but when I do, I might get enough time to play a level or two, and feel some accomplishment.  When a game is too large or progressive, it is hard to get back "into the groove" and remember where you left off, or what progress you made weeks/months ago.  The levels of Descent 1 and 2 don't tie into each other, so I am not required to remember if I found a colored key in the previous level, each level is fresh and new.  (other than carrying your acquired weapons forward).

Because I am such a big fan of the Descent series, I did support the new Descent Underground game.  But the more I learn about it, I see their focus is on multiplayer only.  I really don't have time for multiplayer games, because I am just cannon fodder to those who have more time and experience.   :(

So I am definitely contributing to this new single player game.       You have my $120!

In the mid-to-late 1990s and early 2000, I purchased only Descent 2 and 3, as well as FreeSpace 2. I enjoyed them, but this not lasted longer due to my focus on primary schoolwork.

I'm definitely wanting to contribute to this new game.

Just saw that the first stretch goal is modding tools.  Even if this project gets fully funded, the kickstarter would probably be only a limited success without it. Modding tools would be very important to keep that community going.

The Revival team have expressed interest in developing a space-combat game (you'll know that means a new FreeSpace) after Overload, so even if you aren't a Descent fan this is definitely the right time to look to the future :)

THIS is why I was concerned about potential market saturation.
Descent Underground already cashed in on the nostaliga of most of the people who aren't super hardcore into Descent.  That this is going to be made by the people behind the original Descent only helps a little bit.

Watch Luke, Mike, and Matt sit and play some Overload with Josh from Volition on V's Twitch channel: https://www.twitch.tv/dsvolition/v/52165322 (video starts around 11m 20s)

I think Overload looks fantastic, even more Descent like than Descent: Underground. The KS only has 7 days left, needs another $156,500 to reach the goal. I worry with the big push for D:U not that long ago, there might not be as many folks interested in backing another project, but man I really want this one to succeed. I'm upping my pledge to $120, and hope people will continue to spread the word about this present-day Descent title.

Yeah, I really feel like it would have been a better idea to wait a few weeks, get the teaser ready to go, and then launch the Kickstarter with that as a backer incentive right off the bat.  There's still a chance that the goal will be met, but I think it would have been a far safer bet that way.

It plays nice, it sounds nice, it looks nice, it feels nice. Not necessarily in that order. I've upgraded my pledge from 35 to 90 bucks.

Really hope it goes through. There's 4 days left and 130k to go, sidekick (http://sidekick.epfl.ch/campaign/1692978427-overload---the-ultimate-six-degree-of-freedom-shooter) predicts 87% probability of success. Go donate peeps!

Title: Re: Overload

Yea. And if the campaign not made it, here is a statement

Quote
We've just crossed the 40% level in our campaign ($120,000 pledged) so we want to give everyone an update on how we think things are going.

Looking forward to the final two weeks, we're in ok shape. It will take hard work, but we're confident that with your support we can make it. We've got a lot of cool stuff planned for the coming week. We'll keep showing off the great new content we're adding to Overload, and next week we'll have a very special drop that we think will attract streamers and YouTubers.

The other big component is you -- please continue to spread the word as much as you can! We'd especially like to reach the broader audience of gamers who aren't already 6DOF fans. If you're passionate about this kind of game, tell all your friends why it's so awesome and why they should back Overload.

Several backers have asked what will happen if we don't meet our Kickstarter goal. No matter what happens we won't be giving up on Overload. We've already spent a lot of our own time and money on the project and it's too cool and too far along to give up on.
But without a successful campaign, it will be very difficult to make Overload the game we envisioned. Specifically:

• The number of levels and robots may be reduced.
 • Overload will not have multiplayer.
 • Overload might only be coming to PC. PS4, XB1, Mac and Linux might not make it.
 • If we still release the level editor, it will be undocumented.
 • Many other small features/items will simply never exist.

The game will still be the best we can make it, but no KS funding means we'll have less development time to work on it. We will likely have to spend valuable time looking for other sources of revenue. It's also less likely Revival will stick together after Overload's release. We would like to do a sequel to Overload and our dream has been to follow it with a space combat game

The last one:
...follow it with a space combat game. The last time they did Freespace! YES!!!

Here is part of their response: "Unfortunately, because of the way that your financial institution processes these charges, we’re unable to support your credit card at this time."  They suggested using a pre-paid card with at least a dollar more than my pledge.

I'll feel really crappy if this KS fails by less than the amount i was going to pledge!

The developers of Overload have plans on making a Space Combat Sim if this kickstarter goes through.  Since these guys also made Freespace 1 and 2, and the writer for Overload did the writing of Freespace 2, we could very well see a spiritual successor to Freespace.  But if they don't get funded they said chances are their team would disband as well.

So please, go and pledge to this kickstarter to hopefully get a developer to make a games that we love.

My bank doesn't extend a line of credit (and with that give out credit cards) to students, because they require a steady income (which I don't have at the moment) for all that to be legal (I know there is the option to get pre-paid credits cards which make away with that requirement but then again I rarely need one anyway)

Does your bank not offer debit cards?  I haven't managed to score a credit card yet, but I get a ton of mileage out of the former.

I've also had no trouble using debit on KS, but I don't know if it might be a regional issue or something.

Gah, wasn't reading it right.  It could very well be some sort of international thing; I know my card issuer didn't let me use debit for GOG.com before I called them about it.

I'll call my bank tomorrow to see why they are blocking me from using my debit card on KS.

With a funding of $306,537 at the deadline, Overload is coming. Revival Productions is here to stay.

Much like the Material Defender escaping a collapsing mine after blowing up the reactor, this Kickstarter scraped through by the skin of its teeth.
