Title: RELEASE: Freespace 3 the search For bosch

Hi! Please excuse English in this post. I had the campaigns spelling and grammer checked by freind who did a semester aboard in Cardiff, so it shouldnt be a problem their in actuall campaign.

I just am found FreeSpace 2 last month and plaid through main campaign, fsport, blue Planet, and Secondary Great war part 2. Not sure what my favorite is so far. I am liking it all. So I thought I make my own campaign!

Anyway in this campaign:

At the moment I find myself much too exhausted to take on a full playthrough of this piece of art, but I did manage to play one minute of the first mission, and I find myself agreeing with The E's assessment in every possible way.

Just finished playing this!

Very good campaign! I wish there were more of these out there! I wish my campaign was exactly like this! I really loved the characterization that Alpha 2 got, it was so sad when she had to tragically
Spoiler:
die
.

All the missions were very unique and fun! Though mission 2 was slightly hampered by the EMP from hostiles. Mission 3 was a bit chatty for my tastes, but the foreshadowing presented made it worth it. I loved the twist ending in Mission 4! I never saw it coming. But looking back on it, it was so obvious from the start.

Do you have plans for a sequel? I would love to help! I can help FREDing! My uncle says I'm very good at it! I think I am too!

Question for the dev:
Spoiler:
Who are you, really? I need to to award you several internets for this. I need a name and address!

Also is the supernova the end of the campaign?

Lastly: Screw you for stealing jokes I planned on using! What am I supposed to do with this Benny Hill theme now?!

Actually, it is funny. At least judging by

Wasn't able to finish mission one because of the number of frikkin ships. That wasn't funny. In fact, this sucks Shivin balls.  :P

Well I haven't managed to squeeze in a proper playthrough of WiH yet, but I do seem to recall myself promising to drop whatever I was doing and play FS3 regardless of what it looked like should it ever be released. And here it is! Downloading now.
Title: Re: RELEASE: Freespace 3 the search For bosch
Post by: LordPomposity on July 03, 2011, 10:49:11 am
Probably not AltTtuta. I doubt Karajorma would be amused by him alt-trolling while monkeyed.

Unless he asked Karajorma to monkey him as cover for this campaign.  :eek2:

I'm not getting the communications menu or HUD corruption in the above screenshot. I'm using VPs and it runs fairly smoothly, so it's either a VP issue or a memory issue. Or something isn't functioning "correctly" on my end, but I haven't found anything like that in the mission file. Looks like ktistai228 is getting a fuller experience than most of us. :D

Oh, and Lord Ultra Death: retabling the EMP advanced as a bomb just so that you could use good-secondary-time to make the AI spam it at the player in the eponymous second mission was a nice touch.

Well I haven't managed to squeeze in a proper playthrough of WiH yet, but I do seem to recall myself promising to drop whatever I was doing and play FS3 regardless of what it looked like should it ever be released. And here it is! Downloading now.

Having played through this, I'd recommend you not, or at least not all of it. Mission 5 contains a WiH reference that's pretty spoilerific if you don't know how R1 ends.

Just finished the first mission. I thought it was funny that  I'm FREDing an exact same mission at the moment, but you've put in a few tricks that I didn't think of. I'll have to open the mission and see how you managed to do some of the things you did.

Just a minor nitpick: the GVCv Angkor is named after a South-East Asian landmark, rather than the Egyptian scheme that most Vasudan ships seem to be named. Other than that, it's pretty good so far.

Story is on par with many of today's works, such as cowa dooty blops for example. Dialogue is compelling and moving, and the first mission with the mysterious "shivins" provides a fascinating insight on how the aging HLP community deals with a disenfranchised and belligerent youth.

Nah, dodgy mod was a prove of concept, that a campaign can be released within a short time ( 3 month, iirc, which also is almost a year back...  :P).

Maybe it's FS3ttuta. Or maybe not.
Queenholly is also a suspect. And why do i read Queenholly as (FSO) Sara? Maybe it's her! Or maybe not.

In my second playthrough now. Recommend -bloom_intensity 200 for this campaign.

I finished the last mission, and WTF is that ending ?
Spoiler:
Street Fighter is invading Freespace (when you jump out) ?? And what the **** with those bomber which target you when I try to destroy the Orin after overloading the Computer ?
XD

Spoiler:
I didn't pick up on any street fighter reference. I believe those bomber wings (like much of mission 5) were a reference to War in Heaven, in which the player is repeatedly ganked by wings of bombers and heavy fighters packing trebs.
Title: Re: RELEASE: Freespace 3 the search For bosch

Title: Re: RELEASE: Freespace 3 the search For bosch
Post by: LordPomposity on July 04, 2011, 10:22:44 am
It just takes some getting used to. You need to break and deploy countermeasures a lot earlier (i.e. when there's still a sizeable line coming out of the yellow triangle) against trebs than you do against most other missiles. Once you're accustomed to doing that, yeah, it's no big deal.

This is out of left field, but...BlackDove, perhaps? He's been known to be quite unreserved in expressing his opinion on other people's projects (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=57000.msg1148721#msg1148721). That and the "10 years" thing.

Provided this isn't Trollttuta's work, I eagerly look forward to reading his review of this superlative piece of interactive literature once his current round of monkeying has expired.

I don't even use countermeasures on them, I just burn towards them and bank out of their way so it overshoots.

Well granted, the thread was about opinions on the music, which I very much agreed with BlackDove in this case; Requiem For a Dream is pretty much **** at this point because of its tendacy to be overused beyond comprehension.

Well it's obvious that we will blame the "usual suspects", since they are the ones we know best who are willing to make this kind of ****. I mean, it's statistically inevitable that we will do so. Even doing this we'll still have a large number of users left out that will either not have interest in the campaign to look at the thread or look at the thread and simply not post.
Either way I'm utterly incapable of making anything other than free-flight missions with various ships and a skybox for posting beauty shots, so I couldn't be involved.

Who should be named Grand Inquisitor? I would volunteer myself, but Darius wants R2 ready for beta testing by the end of the summer. I don't think I'll have time to take on another sweeping community project. :(

This campaign is a.. sort of new kind of campaign. I don't think it is just a funny campaign ; the battle are more realistic, especially in the first mission : do you really think a war like the 2 Great Wars have been won by only maximum 5 wings of 4 fighters ? It's clear that a war like it, to be realistic, must have at least 20 wings fighting. Moreover, (I didn't think at all that my FPS would not decrease), having so many wings doesn't really make the computer lagging. In fact, the capital vessel made my computer lag more than those 20 wings ! (ok, I must have a poor graphic card.. Intel sucks anyway.. and I played with all graphics options disabled but Mipmapping).

However, this make the game "more Call of Duty than Freespace" (as it has been said in some of the first posts), and the pilot could just sit around and watch the battle that the mission would be won anyway.

The campaign is critisizing too : it shows us the limits of the Freespace game in the mission 2 (I **** every EM missiles now !!), and in the mission 4 the graphic details of the vessels of Blue Planet 2 are critisized (the low amount of FPS when a Solaris jumps in is unfortunately true).

Well, this is a quite funny campaign anyway =) funnier than DeuxExMachina ^^

But, please, don't call it Freespace 3 ! It is not a continuity of Freespace 2, because it's rather a funny campaign than a historic campaign like Blue Planet. You just can't call it Freespace 3.

Hmm...I think this calls for a formal community investigation, nay, an INQUISITION!

Who should be named Grand Inquisitor? I would volunteer myself, but Darius wants R2 ready for beta testing by the end of the summer. I don't think I'll have time to take on another sweeping community project. :(

The referance to R2 makes me think it someone from the inferno team

Still, this is the best laugh I've had in quite some time.

Actually, the EMU10K2 (Audigy) sucks in the worst kind of ways - mostly for false advertizing (wow, Creative, really?). The EMU10K2.5 (Audigy 2) fixed all of that. It's like comparing Vista to 7

Me? I use a CT4870 SB Live!. I still use it because it rocks one of the only chipsets in existence that can wield the power of 32-bit sound, the EMU10K1. Even the most modern card still uses 24-bit.

I finally got around to playing through this today, and ....where the hell do I begin?

I feel on the receiving end of some sort of mind-assault; with the exception of the final mission, everything is so ridiculously, stupidly over-the-top, it hurts. The mission design seems awful, but that looks like the joke- many of the mistakes seem like unbelievable novice gaffes, yet they look too clever to truly be the work of a noob. Examples:
Spoiler:

Mission 1, where the Cleopatra plows right up the arsehole of you and all your wingmen after jumping in. That HAD to be deliberate.

Mission 2, where extremely annoying and unending waves of Lokis and such jump in a mere stone's throw from the player and continuously blast you with EMP. That was a stroke of sadistic brilliance; the player is invincible, so the attacks do no damage, but the wing arrivals are calibrated such that, even with cheats, it's almost impossible to be rid of the nuisance. Indeed, EMP is probably the only way to really prevent a player from affecting a mission via cheats, since he can't target anything!

Mission 3... Good God. I actually stuck around and destroyed everything. I went straight to Commander rank and got the Double Ace with a brand-new pilot. Just... just. Wow.

Mission 4- The references to forum shenanigans really tipped me off that there was something else going on. What thread were they referencing again? I know it's a classic where somebody's flying off the handle about being treated like a 12-year-old. I've seen it, but can't recall the parties involved. Also, major lulz at Pirate King Aken Bosch.

Also,
Spoiler:
Is it possible to actually win? I've tried three possible actions for the last mission: I jump out at the end and fly into a star; I try to shoot Ultra Death's flagship to death with bombs, and get HyperTreb-ganked; I try ~+K and get nuked by an Uber-Supernova. The readme credits make mention of "Like a Boss" being used (it's gotta be for victory conditions), but I'm clueless as to any means to actually win!

One last thing. I feel obliged, essentially, to make a guess at the Developer's real identity, so here goes. My first guess would have been the Battman, but hasn't it been categorically stated that he's not responsible?

That said, my guess (which I am not at all confident on) targets... Darius!
Mostly because nobody's mentioned him yet.

Still, Mission 3 was amusing enough to make me want to play it again sometime.
Spoiler:
Blowing up mass quantities of capital ships/trying to set up chain-detonations, with ultra-long range, multi-kilometer blast radius Helios-Tornados, all set to the 1812 Overture. :D At first, I actually tried dogfighting the Maras legitimately, but after getting bounced around/back by the sheer volume of fire for a while, I locked onto a Mara with the Helios(not yet knowing what had been done with them), and said, "Ah, why not?"
EDIT: Although, I was using the 'lite' version...

For the last mission,
Spoiler:
I tried the two obvious(take out LUD) options, then thought of and tried the old trick from DEM1(start to jump out, cancel, then actually jump out), but couldn't interrupt the jump(as it must have been an in-mission subspace jump event).

The only other thought I have is possibly jumping out before Command 'locks out' your Nav computer(before the Jump Out directive actually appears.)

I assume I triggered one of the many ways to screw the last mission up,
Spoiler:
Having your engines disabled (Which I got through a shockwave killing all of my subsystems) leads to a gaggle**** of Trebuchets being shoved into every port and intake the Mara has all at once. Except what happened was my ship flew into the Auriga Clone at 1,000+ m/s when the missiles hit, exploding on its hull...****ing hell was I lolling hard.

Yes because reputation for making good missions will surely mean that everyone will go straight to being OMG when the name is revealed at a much later date.

Or how about not?

I certainly won't give a flying **** who made it if the name isn't figured out during next month, two, three, four months later because I will by then no longer have any interest in knowing.

It's a silly campaign, it has good laugh potential, but it's not very replayable like serious campaigns are. Play it the first time, love it. Play it later when you've played AoA, WiH, Derelict, Transcend, ST:R, and WoD, and decide that you need another laugh.

Missed the joke.

There was one mission I remember from this that was kind of fun.

I think it was the third mission where you in one fighter had to assault a massive enemy fleet.  You had this super secondary weapon that was basically Helioses in a Tornado type swarm.

My favourite bit was spawning into the first mission and instantly having the main goal flash up as completed following by having to dodge the incoming destroyer as it rammed most of its own air wing.
Title: Re: RELEASE: Freespace 3 the search For bosch
Post by: Phantom Hoover on May 30, 2014, 06:55:31 am
Yeah, the first mission had some of the funniest moments in the campaign, when it's just this brilliant sequence of bad mission design.
Title: Re: RELEASE: Freespace 3 the search For bosch
Post by: Lepanto on May 30, 2014, 08:59:44 am
This campaign was an awesome bit of goofiness, from silly beginning to satirical end. The one-and-a-half levels of unmasked parody were Axem-level, IMO, and I'd like to see more of that style from the campaign creator. But I don't get what was the deal with the EMP-ing Lokis in level 2; they essentially prevented you from playing the level at all.

FWIW, if you look closely enough, the mega-Helios, while it fits in with the campaign's lolblowstuffup tone, would've required modding skills well beyond Ultra_Death's supposed noobish skill level, betraying the twist.
Title: Re: RELEASE: Freespace 3 the search For bosch
Post by: Phantom Hoover on May 30, 2014, 10:46:09 am
The EMP Lokis were there precisely because they're about the most awful thing you could possibly put in a mission. I honestly didn't like the campaign after it started going all meta — we have plenty of 3rd-wall-breaking parody campaigns on HLP as it is, and it was doing a really good job of painting a hilarious picture of Ultra_Death through his mission design alone.
Title: Re: RELEASE: Freespace 3 the search For bosch
Post by: CT27 on May 30, 2014, 12:54:47 pm
Most of the campaign could be considered kind of silly fun (I loved that super Helios mega swarm mission for example), however I really disliked that second mission people are talking about where you are EMPed about every other second.  That was just painful to play.

Sorry for bringing up the dead conversation, but i feel like i must say my opinion.

As for identity for our beloved author, i support the suspecting that is in fact Axem.
JAD campaign (Shivans on the plane!) was released as for 2010 (correct me if am wrong).

Among few files this video can be found: (Screenie)

FS3:SfB Was released only year after. So the time would be correct to support the said video as proof evidence of Axem's guilt!

I'd personally bet on Axem (have my own clues and reasons), but you will see a group of people denying that in a moment.

Get an idea of your own, play the campaign, play the others, try to see what connects to what, who might to do what.. you'll get some conclusions sooner or later.

Don't you recognize polgrish? There are only two people here who speak polgrish! Now I can reveal a little secret: It's prequel to Exile.

I was drinking way too much in 2011. I don't remember fredding it, but maybe it's better this way?

It's someone you wouldn't expect, hasn't been recently active on HLP and has posted in this thread before

If someone finally guessed correctly, would the guess be confirmed, or are we to be eternally unsatisfied? :banghead:

I think two things are near certain:

1. The true culprit will never be honest.

2. Important HLP'ers will continually claim it was their doing. Maybe they're in a conspiracy with the real maker, who knows?

Because that the quality of missions range from very bad to bad with many different errors in them, it is more likely, that this was created by a group of people.

A best of the worst mission designers. Maybe it was created by the same people that were responsible for Second Great War Part 2, Independence Warriors and Millenium  :p

So since it's been over seven years since this was released, might as well ask: who was the mastermind behind this marvelous campaign? Was it Battuta, or was it someone else? The mystery's gone on for long enough, IMO.

It's someone who has posted in this thread who is no longer active on HLP.

Disclosing his identity is a bit of an ethical quandary because he never actually gave permission for anyone to do so.

I'd leave it unknown then.   Harsh but ultimately, fair to the author.

Absolutely not me, definitely someone else. Maybe we can get him to pop in!

Seems like you're trying to run it with the latest MediaVPs which require a recent nightly build.

Hmm, I hoped Knossos took care of all the requirements. What do I need to do then? I went to troubleshooting and clicked on enforce build requirements but beyond that I have no clue.

Are the Knossos requirements for this one configured correctly?

I was the one who put this on Knossos, so I just checked.  Both the FSO and MVP versions are set to "null", which should default to the latest versions of each.  So it should already work properly.

One possibility I can think of is that your build stability is set to "official releases".  Try setting it to "nightly builds" and see if that fixes things.  Otherwise, post on the Knossos thread or the #knossos channel in Discord.

That did the trick, its working now. Until it crashed on the second or third mission. It is so hectic :P
