Recommended Free software for video recording? (And Performance Issues)
Does anyone have a preferred free software that they use to record gameplay footage of Freespace? I've been trying Open Broadcast Software, but it slows down my already average performance, and the resulting footage doesn't really look trailer worthy. Or is it? Would it look junky to post a 14-15 FPS trailer?

Also, is my performance so low because I'm using the debug build? Some of my missions are super simple (like, just a few ships) and use only a few assets, and yet they take 5-6 minutes to load and FPS is quite low (even with low display settings).

Debug builds, even the FastDebug ones, are always slower than release builds. They're only supposed to be used to make sure that your mod is bugfree, not for actually playing the game with.

Have you configured OBS to use your GPU?
I used this guide and got pretty good quality video (colors are a bit off) https://obsproject.com/forum/resources/obs-studio-high-quality-recording-and-multiple-audio-tracks.221/
If I understood it correctly x264 uses CPU while the other three use gpu (nvidia, intel, amd).

OBS is good to capture Freespace, if you get the settings in ok. for your everyday recoding, you can turn down some minimal quality things you dont even see for performance.

Phew, thanks! I was seriously worried that something I was doing was making my mod run laggy.

Thanks for the advice, but I'm using OBS Classic for Windows 7. I'm not sure how to change these settings in the Classic version, since the interface is a lot different.

I'll probably record my trailer footage in the regular (non-debug) FSO build.

And... what exactly stops you from installing OBS Studio?

The fact that I have Windows 7...?

OH I thought Studio was for Windows 8 and newer. Thanks for the tip, downloading now!
