Title: Create your own private FreeSpace Files account
Post by: Hunter on December 07, 2016, 07:38:27 am
*Comes out of the woodwork again, stepping over Orange's corpse in the process*

Well, I've been doing some tinkering here and there and I've decided to implement private accounts for FreeSpace Files. This feature was available before, but it was restricted to mod groups only and it was not possible to register. This time though you don't need to obtain the user details from me, you can do it automatically by registering on the site.

I'm hoping this will prove useful for people that need hosting for their FreeSpace stuff (mods, missions and work you've got in the oven, or just random stuff like Vasudan Porn). Rather than using the FTP or file sharing sites that will probably delete your file eventually, keeping stuff on Sectorgame will almost guarantee your files will be sitting on my hard drive in 15 years time. Probably. I mean, we've had some stuff stored on Sectorgame since 2001 - That's a pretty long time.

What's different about this part of the site is that no one else can see your stuff, unless you decide to share it.

Here is how to do it:

First go to the homepage, then in the drop down menu select 'My Repository'

Register an account - Enter your Username, Password & E-mail. Once you've verified it, you'll be presented with the upload and create options:

Drag and drop files, or press the button to select up to 20 files at a time, which will then automatically be uploaded:

Once everything is uploaded, you can do whatever you like including rename, move, delete and share files. Select one or multiple files to generate a share link:

Copy and paste the share link, then post it wherever you like. Those files will then be downloadable by the public. They can get them individually or as a single zip package:

There are no restrictions or quotas to speak of, but only FreeSpace related content is allowed. All files are private unless you decide to share them.

I will be creating another thread later regarding the main site (FreeSpace Files) per Goober's recommendation. There is a lot of new campaigns and assets that have been released over the course of the year, but they've not been mirrored to FreeSpace Files yet. So that's something I'd like to sort out via the crowd.

Should I be able to see this "Hunter" folder?

No, something got screwed up when I went to sleep. Had a bug in that new user folders weren't being created properly.. Should be working soon.

Please keep testing as I haven't ironed it out yet.

Edit: Ok it should be working properly now - You'll have to re-create your account I'm afraid :)

Many thanks for this Hunter will be great to have a place like that available. Would this account repository work for hosting images too out of interest or would you rather we kept it to asset files?

Sure, images are fine too - though I haven't tested the hotlinking yet.

Speaking of hotlinking, will FSFiles allow files to be downloaded via the FSO Installer?

It should do, if you provide the direct link. There is nothing on the server side to prevent hot-linking, but Incapsula is in the middle.  I've also stopped using encryption for URLs now which should make things easier in the long run.
