Re: A celebration of Freespace
The lighting/glow around the Iceni's engines is just lovely

My thoughts too, although I wouldn't trade a sane Arcadia for a slightly better looking Iceni engine glows :/

Re: A celebration of Freespace

And there we go. A Ulysses (badly) converted into a physically-based rendering ready asset. The results aren't too shabby even for a programmer such as myself, though it just involved copy and pasting various color channels of the existing texure maps into other channels. As you can see, we have some per-pixel gloss going in there so the model now has a worn, rusted look while having splotches of shininess. I'll be posting an official PBR test build and instructions on how all this stuff works tomorrow.

I like gold BTW.

The artifacts there actually make that shot work better; it looks like it's been dipped in gold and it's still dripping.

Re: A celebration of Freespace
There's a branch of the WoD build with PBR, though, and that works well.

Re: A celebration of Freespace
Gold Ulysses is very nice.

It gives it a kind of alien ship feel to me, being gold and the ship's design. I could imagine it being the super-fighter of an alien race.

As mentioned in the other thread, gifs are a poor way of showing off how this looks. So I made some videos.

Thats JUST my idea about the HDR build! Getting a keen advantage at screencap was never so easier! (lower-end machines, you can go home now...)

FPS one thing, the other, is that they will keep facing that annoying ERROR MESSAGE trying to even run it up.

Re: A celebration of Freespace
Playing around with gloss here. You can see how the front prongs are reflecting the skybox (high gloss) and then farther in its not (low gloss) and then the cockpit glass is max gloss (except for the painted skull).

The Great War ended 30 years ago.
Our elders tell stories of a glorious civilization; of people with myths of humanity everlasting, who hurled themselves into the void of space with no fear.

PBR looks really good. The engine glow leaking through the ship, though...

Re: A celebration of Freespace
Since there's friction in space in FreeSpace (fighter coasts to a stop when you turn off the throttle), I'm not too surprised that weathering can occur on spacerocks like that as well :P

I realize this is digging up a relatively old post, but I have an answer for this.  Many sci-fi ships are equipped with "inertial dampeners" or some other, similar equipment.  Very useful when pulling maneuvers that will otherwise reduce the pilot/crew to to something that requires a mop, a hose, and a strong stomach to clean up.

Gentlemen, what IS inertia?

You went out of your way to quote and write an entirely-out-of-context reply to a joke from last year?

Command, we can't proceed with the bombing run, we're too busy ogling the PBR on our bombers

Re: A celebration of Freespace
That polished metal look is amazing but the Artemis is not the ship to use it on.
