References to FreeSpace in other games?
I realise I haven't been around much for a while but <3 you guys always. :P

Been playing a lot of FFXIV:Heavensward and helping work on another game that hopefully many of you will enjoy next year...

There's a new Primal (like Aeons or Summons if you haven't played but played the other FFs) in Heavensward, called Ravana, this beauty here;

- A Primal is a God, summoned by the mortal prayers of their worshippers, in this case, a new insect race in the expansion.
It REALLY feels like a Shivan reference.

I know we had a thread like this a while back but considering how long ago it was there's probably new games that can be added to the list of stuff that ..basically volition made :P
"Neutrality means that you don't really care, cuz the struggle goes on even when you're not there: Blind and unaware."

"We still believe in all the things that we stood by before,
and after everything we've seen here maybe even more.
I know we're not the only ones, and we were not the first,
and unapologetically we'll stand behind each word."

Seems more like a shared source than direct reference. The Ravana is an 8-armed Hindu God and a follower of Shiva afaik.

Re: References to FreeSpace in other games?
Final Fantasy has always leaned pretty heavily on Hindu myth, so I'm guessing it's a shared reference, yeah.

There's a ship class in FTL that's a thinly-veiled Shivan reference, isn't there?

Not so much thinly-veiled as it is a direct reference, isn't it?
Ph'nglui mglw'nafh Codethulhu GitHub wgah'nagl fhtagn.

schrödinbug (noun) - a bug that manifests itself in running software after a programmer notices that the code should never have worked in the first place.

When you gaze long into BMPMAN, BMPMAN also gazes into you.

<Aesaar> literary criticism is vladimir putin

<MageKing17> "There's probably a reason the code is the way it is" is a very dangerous line of thought. :P
<MageKing17> Because the "reason" often turns out to be "nobody noticed it was wrong".
(the very next day)
<MageKing17> this ****ing code did it to me again
<MageKing17> "That doesn't really make sense to me, but I'll assume it was being done for a reason."
<MageKing17> **** ME
<MageKing17> THE REASON IS PEOPLE ARE STUPID
<MageKing17> ESPECIALLY ME

<MageKing17> God damn, I do not understand how this is breaking.
<MageKing17> Everything points to "this should work fine", and yet it's clearly not working.
<MjnMixael> 2 hours later... "God damn, how did this ever work at all?!"
(...)
<MageKing17> so
<MageKing17> more than two hours
<MageKing17> but once again we have reached the inevitable conclusion
<MageKing17> How did this code ever work in the first place!?

<@The_E> Welcome to OpenGL, where standards compliance is optional, and error reporting inconsistent

<MageKing17> It was all working perfectly until I actually tried it on an actual mission.

<IronWorks> I am useful for FSO stuff again. This is a red-letter day!

<MageKing17> TIL the entire homing code is held up by shoestrings and duct tape, basically.

Thinly-veiled, using the same damn name, close enough.

Re: References to FreeSpace in other games?
I remember a SF Scorpion-esque as a boss in one of the Descent games... .

Additionally there was a SF Mara in the hangar in the background in one of these indie space shooters.

The last reference i know about are the four arms of the Sathanas that were used as a ornamentation for an entrance area of the main base in a Sci-Fi RPG Maker game...
Shivan here, Shivan there, Shivan everywhere.

My english isn't very well, so sorry for a few mistakes.

Re: References to FreeSpace in other games?
While it's well within their 'lore'/nomenclature to do this, the enemy design, and most of the things about the intro to the fight(dialogue), also the way they refer to him in the storyline, the fact that he only has 4 arms two lower, pointing down, two upper pointing up, the fact that he's black/red, his weapons charge red, and his body turns red, he also enters through his swords circling looking much like a knossos portal, there was no need for him to be insectoid, there's no prelevance for it in the world at all.... the area he resides in is called the smouldering wastes (supernova remnant? :P)
It's not the first time they've referenced freespace either, though it's always really subtle.
I should probably also point out that FFXIV is full of references to pop culture, other games, anime and it's own franchise, they make a long standing habit, almost (and I really do mean almost) everything in the game that isn't main storyline is a reference to something, and some of the main storyline is also references / homages.. :P

Re: References to FreeSpace in other games?
Googled a picture of Ravana. Looks nothing like the Hindu demon, kinda looks like a SD Ravana (although probably more like a Sathanas).

Yeah, I also tend to feel this is probably more than just a coincidence.
Karajorma's Freespace FAQ. It's almost like asking me yourself.
