BLUE PLANET: WAR IN HEAVEN
VOICE ACTING DEATH MARCH
The Blue Planet: War in Heaven voice script contains more than 250 pages of dialogue encompassing a hundred and twenty roles. It's a titan.
As of today, I'm happy to report that 67 of those roles have been filled, including central characters like Brie, Admiral Byrne, and, if all goes well, Laporte herself. We're now down to around forty roles remaining. Only 24 roles remaining! You are all heroes! Barely any roles left! The Death March is nearly complete.
Let's push to the finish. I'm at [email protected]. Send me your auditions.
IF YOU WANT IN
All you need to do is open the script (https://docs.google.com/document/d/1NYjbAthOD0SITukgSkEX6iIhoOQ6irH-jZCvx1OrsTg/edit?usp=sharing). Here, you'll find a list of every character left to act, complete with lines, filenames, and - in some cases - stage directions to help provide context. As this effort moves forward, I'll be working to expand the script with additional stage directions and pruning out characters whose roles we've filled.
Find a character you want to try. Record their lines in .ogg format. Save each line with the listed filename. Remember, submissions go to me at [email protected].
When you submit lines for a character, leave a comment on the header of the character's script to let other people know. Feel free to submit for roles others are after too - the more, the better. And if we think your voice would be a spectacular fit for more or larger roles, we'll reach back to you.
PRIORITY TARGETS
We are pretty much done.
THE KILLBOARD
We're not in this for the glory. Some people - myself included - just don't have the voice for any of these roles. Others are hampered by their recording equipment. If you don't find a place in the cast, no shame: I'm with you.
But here's a tributed to the dedicated, the stubborn, those who've filled role after role - and billing for those who've taken up the mantles of major characters. Some of this may change, if there are technical hurdles that can't be overcome, or if brilliant new stars rise to supplant our existing talent. But nonetheless: they spoke with valor.
Here is the most up-to-date version of the killboard. (https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AjdULLASXxHpdFdyUjBOQlU1OVh6SlR1RjFmbG96TUE&usp=sharing)

I've just spotted a bunch more lines in our SVN. I'll try to figure out who's where and update any cast roles I might have missed.
-
Is there a general timetable in which you'd like these lines, or will any old time we can manage suffice?
-
The sooner the better. The longer things got put off, the lower the probability they'll ever happen!
-
Is there any particular software you could advise for capture? I was thinking about submitting a few lines as well.
-

It's hard to go wrong with Audacity (http://audacity.sourceforge.net).
-
I came across Vocaroo (http://vocaroo.com/) a while ago. Maybe you can find a use for it.
In any case, I'd like to give this a shot in a few hours... when it isn't 3 AM and the neighbors wont wake up from hearing me talk nonsense to a computer. :P
-
Just sent off some submissions and left a comment as requested on the document for which characters I had a crack at! You should be getting it soon, Battuta!
-
This day is going to be a long haul of recording. :)
Edit: Is there anything regarding effects I should apply besides cancelling background noise?
-
I'd love to help but my voice is cringe-worthy material. Nevertheless the best of luck, and I might try again some time later.
-
That's what I kept telling myself. I decided to try in a few hours and let the general decide if he wants to use it or not. :P
-
HOLY ****. The actress who plays Mina Taylor is voicing Laporte. I may have just squeed.
-
Ok, I've tried my luck with two submissions. More to follow.
-
Edit: Is there anything regarding effects I should apply besides cancelling background noise?
It's probably too late for you, but just as a general FYI: Submissions should be unaltered beyond basic cleanup (noise cancelling etc). All the radio filters and so on will be applied by us, you do not have to worry about it.

That's good because I didn't touch the files beyond noise cancelling. Now I'm just left wondering how good my interpretation of Kassim will catch on. Might be too high pitched. In that case I'll just redo the whole thing. Love the character.
-
I assume the .ogg file names near the text means that someone's submitted their clip for that dialogue?
-
I assume that's the name you are obliged to save the audio file as.
-
That is correct. Failure to follow these conventions will result in us probably discarding your submission, as it makes it unnecessarily tedious for us to drop these lines in for testing.
-
Ah, thanks. I wasn't sure what it meant exactly. So how do I know if someone else's line has been accepted? I'm mostly just going through things, seeing if I can help. I've got a good monotone voice, but there's something in my throat, so it's not so good atm.
-
You'll know when we release the final cast :P
Sorry to be so vague, but that's the best answer available. If you see a role you think you can do, feel free to submit your takes. Having a choice is not a bad thing, after all.
-
I don't always agree with how my voices sounds at times. I usually do a little editing before using it for things like vids and etc. But what the hey, you gotta take chances sometime, right? There's always the possibility you might somehow surprise yourself one day. ;)
-
Do the changes with your throat. ;P
-
Are you sure you want Solaris Control to sound all croaky and sick?
-
I'd love to help but my voice is cringe-worthy material. Nevertheless the best of luck, and I might try again some time later.
A lot of people say this, but you should leave it up to us to judge! Accents can cover up all kinds of flaws.
-
STARWOLF1991 and SARKOTH are the first to hurl themselves on the guns! Glory to these pioneers.
Listen, I hear a lot of 'I'd love to submit, but I sound awful'. That's our job to decide. If your recording equipment isn't complete **** and if you can hold a level tone and sound competent, odds are you'll find a place somewhere. Throw your bodies into the breach! Overwhelm the script!
-
Yeah got it. I will try it later. It's true that everyone thinks their own voice to be ghastly when it's not (I actually know no one who answers otherwise), but it's also true that I do find my voice absolutely horrible. So I'll pretend my judgement is stoopid for some minutes and will try to do something.
-
Dekker, please audition for Prathanya, the EOD guy!
As a reward for Continued Mass Auditions (Sarkoth recorded the entire Kassim role, props to him for dedication!), I've updated the first post with an audio preview of one of our central characters.
-
Brie sounds awesome. :O
-
I think the bane of many would-be voice actors is hearing your own recordings. If there are ways to handle that such as recordings made during a skype-esque video call where immediate feedback can be given, who knows if that helps.
I'm glad to see the VA moving along though and indeed, the voice actor behind Brie is really great. Hope to see more updates in time.
-
I think the bane of many would-be voice actors is hearing your own recordings.
This is absolutely true; and there's nothing to be done about it except hearing your own recording, submitting it anyway, and getting feedback.
I recorded a line and thought it sounded terrible, but submitted it anyway because I know that somebody has to submit lines for this thing to ever get finished. Battuta listened to it, encouraged me, and now I've auditioned for four roles. Try it and see what happens!
-
You can get on IRC with us and link dialogue to get real time feedback.
-
I have to admit that speaking lines in as a lot more fun than I would have imagined. I actually dropped playing Act1 of the unification war for today just to keep recording. I am probably just going to go fully overboard and will throw in a lot. Quantity does not imply less quality though. And seeing that the record is at six roles per head already, I don't think that's necessarily overdoing it. But just in case more than one voice gets into the final version (if any), I try to give each character a noticeably different voice. So far, so good.

*contemplating if it would be a wise idea, visiting the long forgotten wolves' den of channels that start with "#"* Probably not, going to pass on that.
-
I saw from the script's autonotifications that you submitted for Alliance News and another role - if you've sent that email already, it didn't reach me yet, but it might be that you're just noting them off as you record and haven't hit 'send' yet.
-

#bp is best channel tho. No fears, we do not bite. Unless you are food. Then we will.
-
Does anyone think it would be possible to get Ronny Cox to portray Ken?
-
I emailed him and Terran Command a while ago, but never heard back. :(
-
That's unfortunate, maybe I'll give it a try
-
Battuta, another email with another package of recorded submissions is heading your way very shortly! Also dropped a comment on the doco as before for others. That will make eight different submissions split over two packages you'll have from me; time to sit back and let others have a go. ;)
-
Made a lot of progress on stage directions for Simms' script today. Simms is the single biggest chunk of work left anywhere in the script, so it's all downhill from there. As expected, the toughest part is going to be The Intervention, which is an absolute monster.
Send me more auditions so I can post more samples. The next step of our death march (voice acting or DEATH) will be to reach out to other voice acting communities, so let me know if you've got any candidates to nominate.
-

I did quite some more before I rar'd the whole folder and sent it to you. Because you already answered to one of the emails, I'm sure you have it by now.
Edit: Dear lord, after listening to brie I feel like I can just go instantly packing if I don't at least find my good microphone.
-
I felt the same, but someone has to give a shot at those characters everyone else seems to avoid like a plague. *Looks at Steele*
If only to lay a foundation to be topped.
-
Thanks to our aforementioned heroes StarWolf and Sarkoth for more roles, and to Caiaphas and MageKing for stepping up and getting in!
Today we made some major progress, with strong candidates for Lieutenant Vicmouth, Marine Alpha 6, and Admiral Steele himself.
We want your voices. Those little roles with one or two lines are in many ways the hardest to fill. Please help us clean up as many of those tiny parts as you can!
And don't be intimidated, don't be perfectionist. You're not going to do it wrong. Your accent's cool, your voice is interesting! Even if you sound like crap (me, for instance) odds are we'll still find a place for you in a minor role.
-
and MageKing
That would be me, by the way, for those that don't hang out on IRC.
-
Been screwing around all day with my mic settings. I think I finally got it to an acceptable quality level. Now to record some lines...
-
Did a 'what the hell' and did three one-liner characters. Battuta, the submissions are inbound; you know what to do ;) That makes my third pack; roles submissions from me now total eleven. And with that, I am truly going to sit back now and let others get in on this.
Things are looking so promising already! Psyched!
-
Thanks so much, Starwolf. Dedication. Also thanks to mysterious lurker LoneWolf271 who just stepped up with a bunch of great auditions.
-
I've got a friend who does a good chunk of on-air stuff for a radio station; I'll see if I can get her interested.
Also, to #bp!
-
Loads of good work today from regulars and new contributors alike. I have updated our Incentives Program with additional incentives. Keep the bodies coming!
-
Submitted a few more auditions.
Also those sneak peeks sound AWESOME.
-
Gah, this is what I get for falling behind on this folder for ages. Apparently I already got thrown in somewhere, which is awesome, but I'll take a look and see if there's anything else I might be able to do.
-
Did my auditions for Major Prathanya and Xinny get passed along from Cobra? If not, give me a shout and I'll resend them.
-
Not sure, so forward them to be to be sure!
-
Well I tossed you an email, I hope this time my lines actually get listened to.
-
Got 'em, cheers. Emailing you feedback.
-
I just fixed a few broken links in the script ToC. Let me know if you guys see any more.
-
They're all working as far as I can see. :)
-
Hit up a voice subreddit today, will be looking at other sites like VoiceActingAlliance.
-
Revamped the script list to read more cleanly, and added line numbers for every role. Sorted into minor/major.
-

Excellence sauce!
I might know some people who are excellent on a mic and in personality who I could possibly interest in taking part. I'm going to ask around and see who I can rustle up. Hopefully, should be able to convince somebody, if not a handful. :) If you'd like, I also need to write a vlog for my Youtube channel and could bring this one up to my followers to try get some of them behind it.
-
That Brie sounds like Petrarch. Too much awesome.
-
Found my better microphone had a go on it and submitted files for Sergei Gwylim and Admiral Kyle Netreba. Caption is a lot better but slightly quiet.
-
Awesome, tyvm. Sarkoth and StarWolf have really been running a marathon on this one. Starwolf, please point us to any talent you can find!
Woke up this morning to some excellent auditions (thaaank youuuuu jg18 and CommanderDJ as well as Off Site Miracle Men). I suspect I'll need to liberate another batch of previews in reward.
-
Keep 'em coming. So will we. ;)
-
Laporte  :yes2:
-
Awesome, tyvm. Sarkoth and StarWolf have really been running a marathon on this one. Starwolf, please point us to any talent you can find!
Will do!
Laporte's and Brie's previews really are amazing. I just know the next bunch will be as awesome. Now to wait and see who's next ;)
-
I'm in the process of redoing Sorensen with the other microphone. Expect something by tomorrow.
-
Battuta, you have a new set containing all lines for one role coming in from me! Check your email and it should be there!
-
Yep, got it. Just got a promising Sergei Gwilym, so I think I'll de-list him.
-
I would like to contribute, but I don't know which character to pick. Could you recommend some characters that would benefit from a 25-year-old's finnish accent? :D
I have done some voice acting in my past, mainly because of my Operation Flashpoint missions. I'm not a professional; I just like goofing around. Here are 2 sample collections:
Sample Collection 1
These were for a small-group roleplaying game (I don't remember it's name) using pre-recorded narration for different outcomes. I think I was 18 at the time. Here I also used various filters from GoldWave program, and audio samples from Doom 3. However I understand that I don't have to do any post-processing for BP.
Sample 1 (http://koti.mbnet.fi/olzie/Aanisamplet/Session1A.mp3)
Sample 2 (http://koti.mbnet.fi/olzie/Aanisamplet/Session1B.mp3)
Sample 3 (http://koti.mbnet.fi/olzie/Aanisamplet/Session1C.mp3)
Sample 4 (http://koti.mbnet.fi/olzie/Aanisamplet/Session2A.mp3)
Sample 5 (http://koti.mbnet.fi/olzie/Aanisamplet/Session2B.mp3)
Sample 6 (http://koti.mbnet.fi/olzie/Aanisamplet/Session3A.mp3)
Sample 7 (http://koti.mbnet.fi/olzie/Aanisamplet/Session3B.mp3)
Sample collection 2
Here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9t2m0Ak1oPs) you can watch a sample OFP cutscene, although it's almost 10 years old. It probably sounds pretty horrible by now, but at least I tried to change accents between characters ;P
-
Try Anjaneya Control or Vineto.
-
Yep, got it. Just got a promising Sergei Gwilym, so I think I'll de-list him.
If you just got it, it probably wasn't mine. Aaaaaw. *sadface*
-
There are going to be casualties in this war, I'm afraid. Most people aren't going to get the roles they're hoping for. I myself recorded hours of dialogue for Bei back in AoA, and then rejected it all in less than thirty seconds. But we can't let that stop us. That's why it's a death march! Some of us have to throw ourselves onto the wire, plug the trenches with our corpses, lubricate the machinery with our blood and bile! History may forget our names - but they'll never forget the victory we helped author! (http://i.somethingawful.com/forumsystem/emoticons/emot-black101.gif) (http://i.somethingawful.com/forumsystem/emoticons/emot-black101.gif) (http://i.somethingawful.com/forumsystem/emoticons/emot-black101.gif)
-
"This is madness!" - "Madness? ... This .. is FREESPACE!"
Something along those lines I guess. *laughs* I'm probably still going to finish my second take on Sorensen. Just because and for the hell of it. ^^
-
In the end, what matters is that we're here and we've all come together to make something grand, as well as amazing. I honestly don't expect to land a role I'm dead keen on or is my number #1 favorite, but you know what? That is ok. What's most important is that we're here, took up the challenge and are giving it our all to breathing further life into these memorable, wonderful characters; all in the name of what will be an incredible feat by us, the community. One we all oughta be damn proud of and will always look back to with pride.
With that said, press on, good sirs! Many a character needs the power of our voices!
-
Submitted lines for Levi and Masyaf Control. My voice is ridiculously distinctive, so I found it hard to audition for more and still sounding somewhat different between them.
Brie sounds like the father everyone wants. :P
-
Excellent progress today. Wrapped on Sorensen and made remarkable progress on a few other roles. I have...arranged for a reward.
-
Hmm... I tried recording some lines years ago but I hated the sound of my own voice so I deleted them all. Given some of the comments here regarding that I think I'll try again... I just need to wait a couple of weeks for school to start so my wife can bring our microphone home.
-
The reward has been altered. Pray that I do not alter it further, like into some freaky Nagari ****.
-
Byrne.....is.....fantastic! So is the Hesperia and Solaris Strike Alpha! Excellent stuff! :D
Battuta, just noticed a error on Captain Genady's script, line 'bp215s083'. Script Quote: 'Negative, Indus, she's too close. Someone will have to screen the retreat, or none of us are going home.' . In 'Delenda Est', the first sentence is actually written as: 'Negative, Indus, she's too close and she's already launched fighters.' I'm sending you a re-recorded version to match the Delenda Est version right away!
-
Huh, good call.
-
Bryne is... meh. :\
Likely because I always imagined him as being pissed during that briefing. The VA sounds very "dry". *shrugs* I think he can do a better job without "loosing composure".
And he doesn't sound in his 50s
Hides in bunker

Not every actor is going to sound the way you'd imagined, unfortunately. This is an amateur outfit, working under time constraints, and we want to get the job done. Byrne conveys the heart of the role, and that's what we need.
Someone identify that new voice!
-
He sounds like I imagined Sergei Gwilym to sound :)
-
That's right, citizen! The Compass That Never Veers, the Infallible Writ, the Voice of Words Unspoken, our savior Reverend MacDuff has reached down to us with his right hand! Reach up, and be elevated!
e: in the OP
-
Redone line(s) sent!
-
Exactly 50 roles left to cast, by my count. Chipping away at the glacier.
-
Only 50 left? Hot damn did they fill fast! :)
-
OMG... Whoever voiced Sergei is freaking awesome! The voice modulation, tone, errything....perfect...simply perfect..
Also, fwiw... I kinda agree with An4ximandros... If possible, the tone of that briefing would be much better if you could request the voice actor to be a little more agressive or 'pissed'... But only if it isnt too much trouble.
-

-
My mental image of the harry potter trio differed substantially from how the actors portrayed them. It's pretty much a given that a "text" version of a character and an acted version will be different for people.
Also remember, Byrne is a high ranking commander in an organization that's crazy about being Zen (see wat i did thur). I think it makes sense that he has to sound collected, regardless of the situation.
Besides, a high ranking official who normally holds a reasonable facade of calm while busting the balls of anyone who steps out of line is much more likely to inspire fear in someone like Simms than someone who can't keep emotions in check.
-
Just submitted 2 characters, Vineto and Anjaneya control.
For all you lurkers here with microphones: Gather your strength and head to http://www.goldwave.com/release.php (http://www.goldwave.com/release.php). :)
The trial version should be more than enough. Here are some tips for at least adequate sound quality:
- Go to Windows Control Panel --> Sound --> Microphone --> Set 44100 Hz and 24 bit.
- Turn Microphone Boost ON and "Listen this device" OFF
- Set the recording volume to a sufficiently low level, lower than 30 %.
- Install Goldwave trial version
- Create a new file, with a preset of 30 seconds and MONO
- Adjust Volume control options --> enable 24 bit PCM for both input and output --> Set the mono source channel to AVERAGE (the default setting "left" is just stupid)
- Do your magic :)
- Remember to select and cut off the remaining silent part with DELETE. Now your file should be just the right length.
- Select the whole file ---> Click tab EFFECT --> Filter --> Noise Reduction --> Default preset
- Save the file with the correct name file, choose OGG, 44100 Hz, 1.0 q, 240kbps, mono
Good luck to everyone, "we can do this!" :D
-
Why 44.1khz? The game runs in 48khz (I think), and I thought studio mastering usually had you using whatever the hell highest sampling rate you could push (96khz seems best, higher might be artefacty) then downsampling to whatever you want to use (44.1 or 48).
24bit might need to be dithered to 16bit to keep file sizes appropriate for negligible quality loss for faster submitting. I have no doubts that final game files will be 16 bit.
Also, most people's mics suck nuts, most audio will be put through a radio filter, and FSO's sound engine isn't great, so.
-
Finalized a bunch more roles today, and picked up some new talent. The BP IRC crew continues to bang out lines at an impressive rate, and we've had decent uptake from offsite advertising.
-
Not sure, so forward them to be to be sure!
Resent!
-
Why 44.1khz? The game runs in 48khz (I think)
Actually I'm pretty sure that FSO runs in 44100 Hz on default. So does majority of the games anyway. All the existing BP1 voice files are 44100 Hz too. However I would prefer, that all games ran in 48000Hz, but unfortunately that is not the case.
and I thought studio mastering usually had you using whatever the hell highest sampling rate you could push (96khz seems best, higher might be artefacty) then downsampling to whatever you want to use (44.1 or 48).
I have done some meddling with sample rates in the past. Downsampling is not a nice operation, when you don't do post-processing. In my experience, recording in 44100 Hz 24 bit is a better idea than recording in 96000 Hz 16 bit, when the end result is downsampled to 44100 Hz anyway. Downsampling leaves random artifacts, especially on higher pitches. 48kHz, 96Khz and 192kHz ---> 44,1 kHz conversion is messy; 96KHz --> 48kHz conversion is more manageable, but useless if the sound engine reads @ 44100Hz.
So that's why I think 24 bit --> 16 bit conversion is more useful. Recording at 24 bit gets you a bit of extra fidelity, of which some can even transfer to 16 bit version, and there are hardly any artifacts or anomalies. Besides, recording at 44100 Hz - 24 bits doesn't grow the file size THAT much compared to 16-bit 96000 Hz or especially stereo.
EDIT: useless detail removed

Frak_Tastic! His name will be spoken of with reverence in the next life! Sing with honor the name of Col. Fishguts, who was brave! Carve the face of jg18 into the monoliths of the Valley of Ten Thousand Bloodied Throats! These and others have risen to join the march.
I wish to speak words of honor to all those who have auditioned for Kassim. The mountain of corpses we have built beneath the role tells of great determination. The sea of blood spilled in Kassim's name gives testament to the bravery of these candidates.
Sing, muses, of these and more:
Adam 'Ultra_HR' Warren
Aditya Tejas
Aksel Alpay
Basil Vendryes
Bigchunk1
Clive Scerri
Darknezz
IronBeer
James Firkins (who did a splendid job, but who faces the unfortunate handicap of being Ransom Arceihn, with one of the most spectacularly recognizable voices in the community)
Josh Kay
Kael Larkin
Kevin Dawes
Michael Blakeslee
Michal Wlodarczyk
Mongoose
Nis Nis
-Norbert-
Orcinus
Peter Lewis
Sarkoth
Scotty
Sebastian Rodoni
Son of Orion
SuperCoolAl
I also suspect starwolf took a stab at the role, knowing starwolf's dedication. Look at these brave sods. Marvel at this monument to their tenacity, courage, and determination. We'll have a good Kassim.
Today has been another day of excellent progress. In quite the reverse of our AoA demographics, we need more ladies. Find and roust some ladies who may act for us.
I must rest. The effort of unzipping all these archives leaves me terribly weary. Tomorrow I will bring you voices.

For those using Audacity or any other recording program, I'd like to condense the former into three main points:
1. Make sure your recording does not have clipping on it. Clipping is when the waveform signal from the microphone is so strong that it "peaks" beyond the valid area, creating "plateau"-like waveform that sounds like a demented kazooist during a Saturn V launch.
2. Make sure you're getting good enough signal-to-noise ratio on the recording. This is quite easy to do by monitoring the waveform; as long as the general thickness of the waveform while you're talking is clearly distinguishable from the "silent" level, you're good. For obvious reasons try to minimize the background noise level, too...
3. Familiarize yourself with the noise reduction utility on your recording program of choice. Audacity especially has a very powerful noise reduction tool that actually allows you to analyze your particular recordings for a noise pattern, making it more accurate at detecting which parts of your recording are noise and which ones are not. To do that, I recommend leaving some trailing or leading silence in your samples while you're recording them. After amplifying your track, you can then select a bit of the noise, open the Noise Removal tool, and click on "Get Noise Profile". The tool will close without any dialogue, but the noise profile is now stored. Now you select the track fully, click on "Noise Removal" again (or "Repeat Last Effect") and click OK. By my experience, the default settings are quite fine.
4. Submit samples preferably with lossless codec (PCM WAV or FLAC), or if you must use compression (for bandwidth or email limits), use highest-quality VBR OGG Vorbis.
...FOUR main points.
MP3 codec in particular is to be avoided at all costs. There are some technical reasons for this.
MPEG-3 codec is inherently lossy so using it places some limitations on what we can do with the submitted voice samples. Same applies to OGG but to lesser extent because:
MP3 is designed specifically for music, not for speech. In addition, voice acting samples often have at least some level of noise in them unless they're already properly treated or recorded with professional studio grade equipment... and MP3 codec considers audible noise as "signal" but doesn't really know what to do with it, and often the result is that the codec produces all kinds of strange artefacts (tingly noises, weird harmonics etc.) that can be almost impossible to remove.
OGG Vorbis is a more modern codec and better than MP3 in every possible way.
Possible suggestions for reducing noise / improving the SNR:
-make sure microphone cable doesn't run right next to some transformer - those are often notoriously bad sources of RFI that an unshielded cable will pick up like an antenna. This is a typical, common source of 50Hz "mains hum" type noise. I'm getting that too, but there's not much I can do about it...
-connect microphone directly to the sound card / motherboard's mic input on the back of the PC, instead of using the front panel connector. Sometimes, the front panel connectors can be a source of noise, be it caused by ground loops (typically causes a grinding or whining noise that varies based on things like CPU load), or RFI from the devices inside the computer (such as graphics card). Even if the sound card itself were shielded against such interference, the front audio panel wirings are typically a weak point in computer case design.
-
Kassim? Nah, I never auditioned for him. Captain Genady though, he I did take a stab at :p
-
Today has been another day of excellent progress. In quite the reverse of our AoA demographics, we need more ladies. Find and roust some ladies who may act for us.
I know a woman who would make the perfect Karen Ng'Mei. I've directed her to the script. I'm also stretching out to my female American friends to see who else I can find.

This is extra important. I have an Asus Xonar Essence STX with an EMI shield, so that greatly reduces background noise. If I try to connect the cable to front panel (using integrated audio chip), background noise is considerably worse. Most of the time I just disable motherboard's audio from BIOS.
As a sidenote however (related to playback, not recording) Xonar Essence -series have always had troublesome drivers, mainly because of the high DPC Latency. This results in some rare, but annoying sound skips or pops during games. I solved this by using unofficial Unixonar drivers with C-media Control panel. Now the latency is almost constantly at below 100 microseconds.

It's not "professional" unless anyone's getting paid for it...
-
39 roles and falling.
-
7 lines submitted for 3 parts. Not great, but gave it a shot anyway :)
Also, great work everyone. I'm getting shivers down my spine due to thoughts of WiH being voiced! Can't Wait!

Oh come on. Who doesn't fudge their resume just a teeny weeny bit.
Besides, when it comes out someone will put a vid for it up on YouTube. It'll be a nice hyperlink for people to click on.
-
Another big package of submissions coming in, Battuta. - you should be receiving it shortly.
39 to go, people! Let's fill 'em up and finish this thing together!
-
Everyone please put on your best falsettos and audition for female roles, kthx.
-
Just curious, is the doc going to receive an update?, just having difficultly double-checking the resolved lines to the open lines.
-
Just curious, is the doc going to receive an update?, just having difficultly double-checking the resolved lines to the open lines.
The doc is as updated as it needs to be right now - all the roles listed in the first couple pages are still accepting auditions.
-
Ha, just goes to show I've got no idea what I'm doing or reading :/
Thanks Battuta
EDIT: The doc just completely changed on my end. Quite a number of roles have been removed, so something wrong occurred on my end. Sorry about that.
-
It doesn't say anything bad about you at all. For most of our roles, we accept multiple auditions, then sit down at some point and make a decision about which voice fits the role best. Bear in mind you're competing with talented semipros in a lot of cases, and that we filled ~70-80 of the easiest roles before most people got involved. Competition's tougher now.
-
Just posted in a gaming group I'm in and mentioned we're especially looking for actresses. It's mostly a bunch of gay dudes, but going with the stereotypes of artsy + female friends, there's still potential.
I used a shortened link I made:

I've definitely mentioned voice acting for mods on my resume under Personal Projects. I only started doing that after I was cast for a role with the final version officiallyreleased, though, and I've never implied that I did it professionally. Of course, how you want to state it is up to you.
-
Wonderful, thank you so much.
-
I've added The Blade Itself roles - Katana Flight, Katana Tactical, Katana Gunnery, Simak Station, Bowman Station, and the Triteia - to the bottom of the script, though I haven't worked them into the infrastructure yet.
Identify that newcomer and I'll liberate a few more previews for you.
-
Is it Captain Sorenson?
-
Seconding the guess on Captain Lloyd Sorenson.
That voice is brilliant. He really does sound gutted after seeing that ceasefire shattered in seconds. Great stuff!
-
Aah, my favorite pass time! I know I sent a whole bunch of lines, but I think I will send some more I can't help myself. It's pretty fun to do.
You have to help me with the pronunciation of Ensign Zulkifri. I keep thinking of the greek meal.
-
It is indeed Lloyd Sorensen, the Indus' captain. Your reward is here.
And you've got a new - and trivial - identification task!
-
And you've got a new - and trivial - identification task!
I was thinking, "So, it's got to be a pretty recognizable line." I was not expecting him to announce his name so quickly. :P
Captain Telfer sounds great, though!
-
Trick question, it's actually a Vasudan comedian pretending to be Captain Telfer. Vasudan humor sucks.
Edit: They are really good at impressions though.
-
Speaking of comedians: you have a new task, brutal tongue warriors. Identify each new voice in Telfer's batch with a name and the mission they appear in. When you've come to a consensus - and you, all you in this thread, will only get one shot, so conference well - submit it under the heading OUR FINAL VERDICT. Do poorly, and you'll meet a pack of Gefs. Do well and you'll earn a professional military response. Do spectacularly, and you'll trigger a crowd-pleasing contingency.
-
A stark beginning: Steele maybe? No... definitely admiral bosch. Mission is obviously "A Game of TAG"
A trying tongue: the gef pilot who ejected and was held hostage, in that one mission where there was a gef pilot who ejected and was held hostage
A second survivor: an ant, from that mission with the ant metaphor
A challenge derided: Pretty sure it's some gef from the mission with the elder and the pegasuseses
A grateful word: idk
-
Hmmm... ok; here are my guesses:
A stark beginning: Telfer, The Cost of War
A trying tongue: GEF in the lifepod, For the Wrong Reasons
A second survivor: The UEF medical transport, What Binds Us
A challenge derided: GEF pilot, Deals in Shadows
A grateful word: Rheza Station, Darkest Hour (this is the one I'm least sure of)
(looks like I mostly agree with Shivan Hunter)
-
That last line is from... ****, it's from whatever Luna Control is in that one mission where you fly with the Knights and rendezvous with the Elder. I can't remember the name of the mission or the exact name of the role.
-
the luna base is from
the mission with all the talking One Perfect Moment... hmm. Actually that might be it.
[EDIT] also niffiwan re: a second survivor, I think someone in a wing said that, not the medical ship... but I could be totally wrong. I should play BP again
-
The 'A Second Survivor' line is Levi, from What Binds Us.
-
Rev up those GEFs cuz I am out. :P T'was a fun game and all but meh.
-
Rev up those GEFs cuz I am out. :P T'was a fun game and all but meh.
I guess a GEF gauntlet could be fun :)
Here's the updates from everyone:
A stark beginning: Telfer, The Cost of War
A trying tongue: GEF in the lifepod, For the Wrong Reasons
A second survivor: Levi, What Binds Us
A challenge derided: GEF pilot, Deals in Shadows
A grateful word: Luna control, Deals in Shadows
Anyone else want to toss ideas into the ring?
-
A grateful word: Luna control, Deals in Shadows
err well, luna base isn't in Deals in Shadows. It's in One Perfect Moment, the preceding mission.
-
Ooops. Fixed....
A stark beginning: Telfer, The Cost of War
A trying tongue: GEF in the lifepod, For the Wrong Reasons
A second survivor: Levi, What Binds Us
A challenge derided: GEF pilot, Deals in Shadows
A grateful word: Luna control, One Perfect Moment
...but I don't recall any fighting in that mission. How does that fit in with the praise for saving them?
-
Post Meridian.
-
Yer, its Post Meridian in which Luna Spaceport is thanking you for.
-
There's been no new suggestions in 16 hours or so.... and who wants to live forever anyway - BRING ON THE GEFS!!!
OUR FINAL VERDICT
A stark beginning: Telfer, The Cost of War
A trying tongue: GEF in the lifepod, For the Wrong Reasons
A second survivor: Levi, What Binds Us
A challenge derided: GEF pilot, Deals in Shadows
A grateful word: Luna control, One Perfect Moment
-
Well done. A perfect five for five. You're reckless, relentless, or lucky. The appropriate contingency will be activated shortly.
-
The contingency being: Find a Lorna Simms or DIE!
-
The prize is in position.
-
Steeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee eeeeeeeeeeeeele.
-
Wow. Just Wow.
And... I didn't think that was in the script, wasn't it from "Conversations from Tenebra"? And we got it voice acted anyway? Wheeeeeeeeeee :D
-
We are not like the enemy. Orders are not optional in this fleet.
SUCK IT UEF

I came across this line from Sorensen which was accidentally missed in the OP; here it is so you can all enjoy it :) Facing Death (http://blueplanet.fsmods.net/voicepreviews/sorensenfalling.ogg)
-
          Awesome and Great.
-
I listened to Coffee and Contingencies and my pants promptly fell off.
-
That recording made me extremely moist.
(Not sure when I'll get the chance to look through those lines, though if they keep getting knocked off at this rate maybe I won't even have to. :D)
-

You already submitted a billion and landed several minor roles, IIRC, though it's possible some of yours may be taken by the Dreaded Semipros.

That was amazingly good.

In commemoration of their early and enthusiastic efforts to get this death march moving, I have nominated Sarkoth and starwolf1991 for Gold Stars.

Ooooooh goooosh......Coffee and Contingencies was outright creepy. If I had been face to face with that steele and he said that, I'd be bricking my pants. Superb work!

Much thanks! Am very proud to be doing my part :D

Yeah, but there were probably a few I'd missed, and paging through my audition files I know I could take a better crack at some of them. That whole EMOTE! thing can take some practice. :p

After recording for Acts 1 and 2 is finished, we have to keep the momentum going and record Act 3.
After we record Act 3, we record Acts 4 and 5.
After we record Acts 4 and 5 and finish BP2, we record BP3.
After we record BP3, we record BP4.
The March never ends.

No retreat, no surrender. Even if we come close to losing our voiceboxes, we shall march! And make it glorious till the end ;)
-
STEEEEEEEEELEEEEE!
That was AAA grade, maybe even better!
-
I find it fitting in the highest order that Steele mentions MORPHEUS while sounding a whole lot like Laurence Fishburne.
-
There was a role I thought would be so hard to cast I never even listed it, thinking I'd basically have to redo the script. But mirabile dictu - it has been cast! Guess it and I'll give you a new batch of previews, and the opportunity to nab more.
(bp irc crew please don't spoilz)
-
(bp irc crew please don't spoilz)
Damn. ;)
-
This question's kind of unfair so I'll give you a hint: it's the Federation's only spacefaring pig.
-
Kassim?
-
Hahahaha, he does have the manners of a hog in heat, so excellent guess...but nope. You earned some data with that excellent guess, though, so: it's another wingman.
-
Olefumi!
I was going to recommend a gifted friend for the role, but the position wasn't listed as open :p
-
Well done! Updating first post. Plus another voice to ID - one of Olefumi's personal friends, so your options are limited.
Live in five.
-
Gah, if Olefumi was open I would have gone for it. I can do a very good South African voice. :P
-

Well, get your friend (and yerself Hobbie, I know you've done good work already) on board!
-
Yeah, this Olefumi sounds better than I could do now that I've had a listen.
Now I want to record some of the stuff in the fiction viewer. And I have to get my Karen Ng'Mei soundalike to audition!
-
Voice identified. It's Yangtze Control! :)
-
Well done!
-
Gah, if Olefumi was open I would have gone for it.
Ditto. He's the first I would've picked to go for had he been available when I started recording submissions. I've always managed to picture myself saying those things he did in 'The Intervention' had I been in that situation. Ah well.
Hat goes off to all the wonderful talent we've been able to hear so far! Stunning work ;) Already damn eager for the next wave of previews.
-
Sorry, dudes. I wasn't sure what direction I wanted to take him until I heard this voice.
I uploaded everyone's favorite Olefumi line as a consolation prize! Can't believe I missed it.
-
If all the voice roles are finished by this time next month I demand that Battuta must read this (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=70050.0) to us.
-

Second.
Also, Yangtze Control is spot on.
-
Battuta, just noticed an important line missing from the script for Major Prathanya. The line is:
'Alpha 1, you need to remain calm. We're in the middle of some delicate work here. The warhead has air displacement sensors and our drones very nearly set them off.'
Spoken before he informs Brie that preliminary RSP and defusal is impractical at the present moment and more time is needed.
-
Thank you very much. Putting it in.
-
Fudge biscuits - found another one a few minutes later. Again, Prathanya:
'This is Major Prathanya. We've deployed drones into the Nauticus. No sign of the crew. We're attempting to isolate the warhead's software connection to shipboard sensors. Stand by'.
-
Got it, it's in. Let me know if you spot more.
-
That I have. Two lines for Suffron control in 'The Cost of War.' Both are corrections to what is on the public script and were found in the FREDDed missions.
The first is bp201s15.ogg, in which Suffron screams at Alpha for their poor initial performance:
'Alpha wing! Where the hell were you? You just let thousands of civilians die! Incompetent, half-brained rookies! Damn you!'
The other is bp201s42.ogg, for if the Leeuwenhoek is destroyed:
'Gods above! The Leeuwenhoek...she had five thousand souls aboard.'
-
Consider the public script as overriding what's in the FREDed missions. These were rewritten for more natural speaking out loud.
-
Will do.
-
'Alpha wing! Where the hell were you? You just let thousands of civilians die! Incompetent, half-brained rookies! Damn you!'
Oh man, I had enough trouble with the modified line as it was; tack on those two sentences and... *shudder*
'Gods above! The Leeuwenhoek...she had five thousand souls aboard.'
I thought that was the li-- oh, looks like it got rewritten in the script. The new line is... a lot more readable.
-
All the other stuff checks out as far as I can see. Think they are all there now; just those few that were missed or different.
-
Listed roles from The Blade Itself: Simak Station, Bowman Station, the GTCv Triteia, Katana Flight, Katana Gunnery, and Katana Tactical.
-
Was just reading through these, I know what I'll be doing tomorrow morning ;)
-
It's "Lah-port"?
-
That's correct.
-
I think the link to the script is broken, when I click on it it takes me to a separate page but as it is loading, a message pops in saying that there's a problem and that Google is working on fixing it. Maybe it's just me but I really think you should check it out just in case.
-
Works okay for me. Can anyone else repro?
-
I see the list.
Edit- every time I hear my own voice... Frustrated.... Can't quite......
-
Once or twice before, the script would load. But then immediately afterward, it would say there's an problem and its trying to be fixed. This was a few days ago however; I'm not able to replicate said issue right now.
-
I see the list.
Do What Binds Us Scorpio 1 and be Dekker.
-
New priority target in the OP.
-
All right, pilots. I've got a major objective for you. Stage 1 will involve a coordinated effort to complete tasks here and around the forum.
I want to see:
One person play through the recent Diaspora release candidate and post a report on any bugs in the relevant thread (objective waived if the RC goes final).
One person post a review of JAD XA.
One new actor joining the Death March.
Stage 2 will require you to identify fragments of audio, pin down a place and time, and thereby unlock the full preview.
-
One person post a review of JAD XA.
It has a race. 419/10.
-
In his forum, though!
-
Diaspora component's done.
-
Battuta, you should have incoming soon for 'The Blade Itself.' Keeping things rolling forward.
-
Submitted some lines for the Akula, Ironhide and Eris!
-
Get me that JAD:XA review, pilots!
-
I'll take the case!
-
JAD component complete.
-
Dayyum; I was beaten to it. Tis what happens when I'm enjoying myself :X My apologies
-
No worries, I'm sure Axem always appreciates more feedback.
-
We haven't had any new actors join the Death March? Quick, recruitment drive!
-
Hello,
I just submitted the lines for Argent Mist and Bowman station.
If they're of sufficient technical quality, I'm happy to try for more roles.
-
All three components are complete. We are now commencing Stage 2.
Identify the speaker, location, and rough time (for instance 'during the Martian holiday', 'after the Blitz') of the target dialogue. Use the following shards.
shard 1 (http://blueplanet.fsmods.net/voicepreviews/shard1.ogg)
shard 2 (http://blueplanet.fsmods.net/voicepreviews/shard2.ogg)
shard 3 (http://blueplanet.fsmods.net/voicepreviews/shard3.ogg)
e: You are free to use all resources available.
-
In commemoration of their early and enthusiastic efforts to get this death march moving, I have nominated Sarkoth and starwolf1991 for Gold Stars.
That is actually quite awesome. I was wondering where that star came from and figured it could only have been something like that. ;)
-
Clue 1: Texan accent? Where have I heard that before? (http://blueplanet.fsmods.net/voicepreviews/hmmcalder.ogg)
Clue 2: "GTI ghosts bleeding liquid helium" heavily implies it takes place after Eyes in the Storm.
Clue 3: Haven't heard/seen the name "Pasquale" before; there are no references to anyone by that name in any reference material or in WiH itself.
CONCLUSION:
WHO? Admiral Calder
WHERE? UED Toutatis
WHEN? End of Act 3
Strongly suspect "Captain Pasquale" is Laporte's fake name, so to make that time very specific, "very shortly after Laporte embarks on the Toutatis".
-
Well done. The first post has been updated with a special piece of content.
-
I'm jealous. I only have the 15 year old Balvenie. :(
-
I was thinking calder was kinda meh until I heard THAT.
Im not great with words, but that sounded great to my ears.
-
Calder's exactly as I imagined him. Superb!
-
Steele... sounds... so... awesome... You guys really should write more lines for him in subsequent acts just so we can hear that voice more.
-
GET HYPE
-
I'm a young 20 something American male with a slightly higher voice. I come from the Midwest so think news reporter accent.
Any roles you can think of that would work? A lot of the roles that I would try out for have names that decidedly would not fit my accent. The few that I see would fit appear to prefer female roles. Suggestions on where you need more American accents?
-
It's the space future and cultures have mingled, so pretty much any name could have pretty much any accent. Go for what you like and I'll coach you towards roles I think fit.
-
Thank you IronBeer and Lapsed Pacifist for some hero submissions!
As we've closed in on 'not much left to cast' I've started talking to some semipro contacts about what our next step to fill the final roles may be. Stay tuned.
-
I've put out a Facebook call that will hopefully return some awesome voice actors. Here's hoping the duclet tones of Steele and Lopez can reel them in.
In other news, I think we should make some joke about Sydney being the capital of the world due to the number of Australians we have or may wind up with. :P
-
Can we get updates on the cast list? Or is that information already available somewhere?
-
The cast list won't be totally final until we've closed auditions, I'm afraid.
-
I've put out a Facebook call that will hopefully return some awesome voice actors. Here's hoping the duclet tones of Steele and Lopez can reel them in.
Got a relative of yours! Hoping to use her for Lila Zhiyan and as much else as possible. Super helpful. Please recruit your lady relatives!
(http://i.somethingawful.com/forumsystem/emoticons/emot-frogsiren.gif)Only 24 roles left!(http://i.somethingawful.com/forumsystem/emoticons/emot-frogsiren.gif) The death march presses forward! Look at how tiny that roles list is now.

That'd be my little sister. She has a pro-grade mic with a pop shield and everything.

Holy **** someone captured Steele... props to whoever is voicing that.

Another two down. Hobbie, you're really bringing them in.

Which roles did these two get?

New voice previews up!

I don't know any interested parties, but I know people who may know people. I'll ask this weekend.
-
Honoured to be considered even for a small role.
To be honest it was that long ago I can't remember if I recorded every line for Kai Chavel in the audition (I know there's only a few and the cast list is not final). Can you let me know if you need anything further?
-
I tried to give this a whirl, but I sound the same as I did 2 years ago. :banghead:
-
You're already in a bunch of roles, man, don't worry about it.
-
Keep this up, guys. I'm looking forward to it. Note that once I get my microphone, I start recording voices for characters if they are not voiced previously :)

Congratulations, everybody. This is gonna be awesome.
-
This is some fantastic effort people have been putting in.
I might give a couple of roles a try once I get my mic back (it's being borrowed by a colleague), but I'm not sure they'd suit my Scottish accent.
-
They absolutely would!
Unfortunately we are down to FOUR minor roles, all of which I could probably close right now due to some pretty quality auditions. From here on out it's just the majors we need to fill.
-
Do you have anyone in sight that you think would qualify for Simms?
-
A few auditions. The role is large enough that I want to pay for it, so that's been a major hangup.
-
We've come so far and kicked some solid butt in the process. Major well done to everyone, I do say.
-
I am curious just how much work it is to re-FRED an entire mission with voiced dialogue. I imagine it's not terribly complicated, just many tedious man-hours.
Edit: I dunno how expensive paid voice actors are, but if funding is an issue I would be willing to throw a chunk of money at you, as I am sure many others would be. Just a thought.

OP doesn't reflect more role closures... you most make an update

I am curious just how much work it is to re-FRED an entire mission with voiced dialogue. I imagine it's not terribly complicated, just many tedious man-hours.
That's actually very easy. When you read the script, you noticed that we gave each line a very specific filename. Those filenames were autogenerated by FRED's VA management tool. Adding the VA is more a matter of exchanging the messages section of a mission, then testing it to see if there are any discrepancies between the voiced dialogue and the written one, and that's basically it.
-
lol check out that role list mother****ers https://docs.google.com/document/d/1NYjbAthOD0SITukgSkEX6iIhoOQ6irH-jZCvx1OrsTg/edit
SIX LEFT (and only one minor!)
-
Ken might be a "minor role", but he sure isn't unimportant!
-
I've added three pilot personas to the script. Please check 'em out and throw your auditions (or your friends) my way.
-
And don't freak out about the Shivan entries, I want these personas to be fairly extensible across settings and campaigns.

Reading failure, not "comprehension", but I generally admire your incredible naiveté (gullibility?) on this! :D
-
All the personas should have a 'praiseshivans' line, it's just praise to the player for getting a kill if the mission mood is set to Shivans.
We don't post information to the public if it could be used to interpolate spoilers. We're particularly careful about that w/r/t the endgame of the war.
-
I've updated the first post with a new version of the Killboard.
-
Um, I didn't audition for Knight 1 or the Hanuman...
-
For the record, Sutekh and me are the same person. I use LapsedPacifist here to avoid confusion with Setekh (which did happen first time I went on IRC).
-
Um, I didn't audition for Knight 1 or the Hanuman...
Think I got you confused with Leoben there.
-
Added another pilot persona.

Tryout for Ken submitted.
Edit:
Tryout for UEF2Fleet submitted.
-
I feel bad for not delivering the role I looked at :nervous:
-
I've engaged a casting director at my own expense to complete the remaining roles. We'll hopefully have the whole Death March wrapped up within two weeks.
-
Battuta, do you accept donations?
-
I'm not averse to the idea - PM me? I won't take it if it's too much. :p
-
Still need Ken? Because I'm had the brilliant idea of using a proper voice recorder I have for taking statements in my basement, which should work out better than my last shot using the computer mic.
-

Well, just read the script:
we’ve had a lot of good auditions for this role, but we’re looking at perhaps using a chorus effect, so we don’t mind more!
More auditions never hurts!
-
All of Ken's lines for BP2 were recorded, received by me, then processed by HerraTohtori for a kickass effect.
Also, I remember having the role of Levi, but I don't remember if I finished recording lines for the character.
[EDIT] Correction: I finished recording them, but I hated them after a bit so I went to re-record and not sound so nasally.
-
omg can't wait to hear them!
-
I just submitted my lines for the UEF 3 Persona. Hope it helps you guys out! :)
-
I submitted for some of the same. Alas, I'm the audio equivalent of watching paint dry... :p
-
Whoever voiced Brie..... sweet lord
-
*attempts to login with username that pre-fills the box*
=That Username does not exist=
*raises eyebrow*
... anyway, I have no idea what happened to my original submissions, but that was years ago.
So, even if I still have the files, I probably sound too different for them to be usable.
I'm going to re-record and re-submit my Ken/Persona/whatever else I can think of.
EDIT:
Actually, I do have a question:
If we're submitting for more than one role, should that be more than one email?
Apologies if that has been answered already.
-
I'd like to apply for a role but I have a chapter test on Boolean Algebra. Will send audition next week.
Also, what kindof mic do we need? Does it matter if I don't have studio equipment???
-
Send multiple submissions in one email, but with one archive per role.
You need a mic good enough to sound clear. Remember that you're going to be up against semipros and pros in all the remaining roles, so...odds are long.
-
Our public casting call over the past week got more than 2000 responses l ooooooooooooooooooo l
-
I am guessing you wont have trouble casting acts 3,4,5 & BP3 then? :P
-
...hang on. That means it'll take ages to sort through the responses you get!
When you get a good Simms, you link it!
-
That's why I have a coordinator. I'm currently working ~12 hrs a day 7 days a week so it may be some time before I can get anything done.
-
Ecstatic to see the voice acting is progressing! So far like all the voice clips, especially the Act 4 preview (if only for the choice of Scotch, Balvenie one of my favorites.) Hope things keep going great for you guys!

Apparently contract makes that unlikely/impossible.

maaaaaaaan this is what I get for showing up late. I get thrown into the grinder with the pros?
Submitted for two anyway, ya schmucks.
-
Not so many roles left! Can't wait to play this with voice acted! I'll try promote this to people I know that might be interested in volunteering! Hopefully they will contact you and participate!

We don't need any more auditions right now, the holdup is just me sitting down with the actresses who applied for the tough roles and making a selection.
-
Omg :shaking:
Omg :nervous:
Can't... wait... :banghead:
-
I've only recently played AoA about a month ago and when I saw this thread, I decided to just wait it out until voice acting comes out for WiH. That said, Battuta, you are both awesome and a jerk (but in a good way) for writing that BP short story. That said, I have full confidence that WiH with voice acting is going to be amazing and awesome. I'm more excited for that release than almost any retail game that's currently in development.
-
It's been awhile since I've checked up on this. There haven't been any casting calls for Act III yet, have there?
-
Nope.
-
IIRC acts 1-4 are cast presently, so its a little worse then that.

No, we've only cast characters who first appear in acts 1 and 2. Also I don't get the reference :(

Ain't that the stealth game that works like thief in 2d?

Mark of the ninja. It's a good one.

Cool! *foams at the mouth in anticipation of everything*
My current obligations are minimal, and I am available to record an audition for Thorn (and maybe Kovacs or one of Al-da'wa's manifestations) if you would be willing to send a script (under the assumption that performance directions have already been composed). For the sake of organization, I can retain the recordings until a later time, when it is appropriate to submit it, unless you indicate otherwise. (I am male, contrary to username gender implications.)
Revised for succinctness: "can I haz script for Thorn and Kovacs, please?"

-
I would absolutely love to, but unfortunately, quality script generation is the most time-consuming part of the process.
-
Completely understandable! I know how it is from having worked on a couple of librettos. I would love to audition, though, so I'll keep an eye out for when those parts are ready!
-
All auditions finally processed! We may do callbacks on a few roles, but casting is close to final.
-
aaaaaaaaayyyyyeeeeaaaaaaahhhhh :D
-
Today is a good day.
-
Looks like I may have to re-play before I even finish my current re-play.
This sits well with me.
-
I don't know if this has been asked before, but is this voice acting "package" going to get a release first for the existing acts of 1-2 or 1-3, or is it going to be delayed until Act 4 gets released and then bundled together?
-
We'll release a War in Heaven Director's Cut with voice acting for Acts 1 and 2 and dreamscape tutorials for Act 3.
-
I emailed a submission. Not sure how up to date that google doc was. If not, I hope it's still entertaining. :)
-
I'm eagerly anticipating this! I've decided to hold off playing WiH until the voice acting is complete, so I can get the best experience in the first play through like I did with AoA.
Was thinking if it would be worth getting the scripts up for Acts 3, 4 and 5 (ok 5 is a bit ambitious as most people await the fourth installment), so that people can start getting in early submissions and hopefully they can be implemented pretty much straight away. okay, I know it's not a priority and could delay releases (which I wouldn't say no too)... but it was just a thought!
-
It's a ton of work, unfortunately, and it would also spoil the entire story.
-
Fair comment. The way round spoiling the story would [SPOILER ALERT] on the initial thread that would start the death march!
I tried a bit of FREDding many years ago, but I don't have the talent for it. But I understand the amount of work that would be involved, not to mention the endless testing that goes with it. I use to produce music using Propellerheads Reason and making something even half decent takes many hours of work!
-
Definitely. I don't just mean making the missions, though - actually getting the scripts into a format that's good for actors, and filling them up with context cues to help them deliver the lines, takes a ton of time. It's by far the lengthiest part of the process, and it's something I've generally had to do myself.
-
God DAMMIT, just looked at this thread. Currently a few missions into the campaign, now I have to decide whether to tear myself away and wait for the voice acted version...
I'm gonna wait. Dammit. :)
-
I would definitely not wait but hell am I gonna play this again and again when voice arrives to WiH :D
Oh and I'll push all my friends so hard into playing this they'll even reconsider our friendship status (until they actually play it!)
-

Guys, I'd seriously consider just playing the campaign now. It may be months until the big roles can finish recording, and who knows whether your lives will still be permissive?
-
Your faceballs are not prepared, its quality transcends the need for voice acting
I'm actually kind of worried that a voiced version might mess with the incredibly clear, years-old mental images I've developed of WiH's cast of characters :shaking:
-
Oh yes, they will. The previews absolutely murdered my mental image of Byrne and Steele, for example. (The first in a "ungood" way...)

One thing can tide us over.
MORE PREVIEWS!
(But only from those who you're legally authorized to give out, y'know)

Or perhaps bloopers (http://deviance.duckish.net/downloads/best_suffron_3_revenge_of_the_suffron.ogg)?

And here I was originally planning to record Calder's big get-angry speech in a super-nasally Scottish brogue.
I should go back and re-record some of the more serious lines in funny voices, just for the hell of it.
-
Price of voice acting. You'll have to deal with it.
Eep, yeah, well, I know. I'm not really complaining. Just a weird side-effect. Did not mean to seem ungrateful or whatever.

By the way, speaking of hilarious bloopers, Hades made this piece of comedy gold (http://deviance.duckish.net/downloads/JACKNIFE.ogg), which literally made me fall out of my chair I was laughing so hard.

CAPSLOCKs are important and must be voiced accordingly.

I am on the one hand, glad you got the VA's again and that they are still awesome. On the other... that convo feels so false. When The Elder is supposed to be cut off, it doesn't sound like that at all, it's just line reading. And Bei talks too slow...
None of this sounds like too much of a problem to edit though, it'd just take time.
Sorry for being a buzzkill. :(

As usual, your perspective on voice acting is frustratingly wrongheaded. We are damn lucky to get coverage at all from unpaid actors whose careers have advanced by years since last time we worked with them. Adding in live direction, repeated takes, sophisticated editing, and all the associated overhead this entails would move this from 'nice bonus coverage on a bit of extra content' to 'never going to happen'.
Which is a valid piece of feedback, of course. We could move to a model in which we only shipped content when we felt it had been pushed to a very high quality bar. We would never release any more content, of course, but if you'd prefer that to the current model...?
Any criticism that hits you about voice acting has probably already occurred to us internally. We have triaged it and addressed it as best as we can with available time and resources.
Old men...are the future (http://blueplanet.fsmods.net/voicepreviews/oldmenconversation.ogg)
SPOILER ALERT! SPOILER ALERT! SPOILER ALERT!
Why are you putting a spoiler alert on a conversation that's been released and public for more than sixteen months?
-
Sorry for being a buzzkill. :(
The best thing you can do to save face and contribute meaningfully would be to open Audacity and make a better edit of the line. It would be easy and I would be genuinely grateful, because we don't have any goddamn time. Post it here and I'll upload it to FTP.

It's remedial education for players who weren't adequately helped by a hud gauge right above their targeting reticle telling them what to do. :nervous:
I ended up understanding what to do in the WIH2 missions, but I had to play some of them several times to get the right idea. I had a strong sense of information overload, because there is just so much to each mission and they are all somewhat unique in the way that they play. That's not necessarily bad.
So, this is coming out next week right?
-
Battuta is currently banned for a month on his own request, so you're not likely to get a response in this thread for at least that long. :p
-
Alright... it's been a month. What's the score?
Also, I tried playing BP War in Heaven as it is now... definitely needs voices for me to play :D
-
I am so happy that this is still alive. Life took me away from this for a long time. Joystick is still in a box somewhere. Already notified my Fiance that I will be vegging out here as soon as we're unpacked.
Somewhere is also a studio grade microphone. I now have a benefit of a small, quiet office for recording voices. Casting call probably already done, but if there are still scripts to be read, I may still be of assistance.
Need to log into GOG.com and download FS2 again.
-
In the end Battuta is the lord and master of this project so give him some time... it's going to be ready when battuta says it's ready! Personally i prefer to let him take his time and nail everything down perfectly (Now that i manged to calm down from the hype) and then experience the full thing in all of its glory instead of having to wait for "Fixes" later on.
-
........is this alive?
-
I, too, would like to know the status of the voice acting.
I understand that this is a community effort and there are outside influences that can delay progress, but just a "yes, the project is alive" would be nice.
Cheers
-
Yes, the project is alive.
:p
-
Awesome, thanks. Good to hear!
Waiting to play through WiH again until the voice acting, can't wait till its done!
-
Oh you can wait. :D
-
All the voice files are on my PC, the holdup is me processing them and getting them into SVN. I'm working on that now - Simms alone had 4gb of raw audio, and each line has dozens of takes that sometimes need to be stitched together into one master take, so it's an effort.
Unfortunately launching Destiny and my ~three-book contract~ eat up a lot of time. After audio engineering is done (Herra will do the final master), we need to finish some dreamscape tutorials for Act 3 and do a ton of playtesting and polishing.
-
Also I ended up forking out for some pretty passable acting so this may end up being one of HLP's Biggest Budget Projects!
-
 Welcome back Wavtutta :)
-
I wish I could help, but all roles are filled, and my mic is a headset mic. I've heard that's terrible for recording, even though it's good. Oh well. Maybe someone will someday use my weird accent and good acting skills for a mod. :nono:
-
It all depends on the quality of mic on the headset in all fairness. The downside with them is that they tend to be a bit sensitive and they will pick up background noise and white noise
Still, if you can get a nice still room and decent software, they could be quite adequate for non-professional recordings. I have a Creative HS950 USB headset (I think I got mine for £40), and in all fairness the quality is not that bad. If you have access to software to do some waveform editing, i.e Soundforge or Reason, you record your voice and put it through samplers and compressors which could eliminate unwanted noise whether that be white, background or earth hum, when configured correctly.
-
I did all my auditions with a headset microphone; just because it's not a professional microphone doesn't mean it's a bad one. That said, as you noted, all the roles here have been filled, but there are always projects that need voice actors.
-
... well, I'd say that the voice itself can be pretty hard for voice acting... regardless of the set.
for example, I did a test on my laptops microphone, using windows recording application, in a calm room, nothing noisy going around, and tuned down the mic so its not bursting out, and did a test, using lines from the project I am working on.
Take 1 (https://www.dropbox.com/s/6d5bmxs6na0zhya/lsrcmd1.wma?dl=0)
Take 2 (https://www.dropbox.com/s/g2sb30j7mw4e2xs/lsrcmd2.wma?dl=0)
Take 3 (https://www.dropbox.com/s/hzz3fj3au1u0s58/lsrcmd3.wma?dl=0)
The effect went out terrible (as for me), so It's not all about mics themselves I think, some people might just not be cut for voice acting (no idea how this would work after modifications, or special recording programs, of which I have completely no knowledge at all)
-
That's an interesting accent and voice. It's not bad per se, but the quality of the mike is terrible. I think that if the quality was ok, it would probably be ok.
-
Well, I had audacity downloaded, and heard that was pretty good. I also have kind of a southern accent, and a slight lisp with my Rs, because I originally spoke in an Italian accent. THeHound, different accents are what I'd look for in a mod. It doesn't seem right if everyone sounds the same, you know? That's why I wanted to do some VA for mods.
-
THeHound, different accents are what I'd look for in a mod. It doesn't seem right if everyone sounds the same, you know?
-Well, I know, i know, thats rather obvious
So... its a shame that I don't have a proper equipment for VA, could record some lines for projects around.
-
If you're looking for a budget VA setup, I recommend either the Blue Snowball or Blue Yeti microphones. Just about $50 and $100 respectively on Amazon right now (in the US anyway). I hear nothing but good things about these mics and am probably going to purchase the Yeti in the next couple of months. One of my musician coworkers actually picked one up for recording on the road when he doesn't have his professional setup on hand. Just note that these are desk mics that don't come with shock mounts, so you might pick up vibrations on your desk through the stand (tapping, keyboard, bumps, etc.) which is why I call it a VA setup. There's a lot of DIY ways of solving this as well on the internet.
Pop filters are optional, but helpful if you're having trouble with plosives (T, K, or P types of sounds sometimes are rather explosive when recording). These range from $10 to $35 on the cheap side depending on who makes it and what the mount is like. I recommend testing your setup before buying one because it's not a problem for everybody. Again, people have come up with cheap ways to make your own on the internet.
Audacity is definitely the right way to go if you're not doing this professionally. Absolutely free and has some nice tools for making your auditions sound more professional even if you don't have a recording studio setup.
If you guys want, I can ask my coworker for more specific advice on recording and put it up in another thread.

Regarding mic quality, I recorded all of orestes tactical, and my earth - brakiri war stuff on a four quid (£) play.com clip on microphone.
I just took my sweet time making sure used it properly.
-
well I was going to try out for a role, but it appears that all the voices have already been picked. I cant wait to play war in heaven with voice acting.... its already so powerful with just the text. My parents once told me that I could go into voice acting, maybe I'll get a chance here sometime later.
-
Hm, it surely takes a while for our overlord Battuta to set things in place. Can't just be patient enough :D (or maybe it will be a Christmas eve present for HLP?!)

Chapters 4 & 5 remain to be released and voiced, and BP3 is still in its proto-stage, you'll have a chance. ;)

I made a big chunk of progress on this and then I started working on my next book (which, alas, has a contracted deadline) and voice stuff's kind of stalled out. I wonder if there's a way to share the workload.
-
I nominate everyone.
-
The problem is that selecting the right take is pretty much a creative decision.
-
I hate to see that go without any apparent volunteers, but I'm pretty sure I'm not the man for the job :blah:...
-
The trouble is finding someone who is both skilled enough to handle the creative aspect and has enough time to finish it up. With all the projects that the best modders become a part of who knows how long it could be...
-
We all need to buy so many of Battutas Books that he can live from the money for the next decade :nervous:

Real life is a *****! My sound creation came to a grinding halt due to stuff I've had to sort out in real life. An SP30 didn't help either (stupid rozzers and their hair dryer guns grr...)!
-

didn't Battuta do the writing for bp?
I'll buy every one of his books if that is the case. have any of them been released?
-
If you find a way to share the workload, I'd love to help in any way possible. Although I'll be the first to say that I am under qualified, I have lots of time on my hands.

He did, but as far as I know, he will not have published any books yet until Fall 2015.

BP3? you mean like, after war in heaven?
why did I not know about this.

It's too bad my original submissions were probably lost years ago, since I never got any feedback from them.
(I did get a receipt. So, I know that they were at least received)
Oh, and before I forget:

-
I would love to know if there is a way we could help expedite this? Either in terms of volunteering time or money. I would certainly be willing to make a donation.
-
ATM, the only characters who don't have their VA done are Laporte and Simms. Both are Battuta's project, but he's understandably very busy these days with his novel stuff. So no, there's nothing you can do. Work is ongoing. :)
-
As I understand it, the actual voice work is all done; what remains is selecting which take to use, which is a creative decision that cannot be outsourced.
-
Even though the selection process cannot be outsourced, would it be worth putting the lines into the missions anyway? Then all Battuta will need to do is vet the missions and decide which lines he wants to change. This could potentially save him a lot of work and things like the timings and triggers for the voice lines could all be prepared (if not done already) and it could lead to a faster release.
Please note that when I say "All Battuta has to do" I use this loosely, as I still appreciate that there is a lot of work to be done.
I know that this suggestion probably won't happen, but I thought it would be worth mentioning so that the devs would at least have a full working voiced model. :)
-
That's not a terrible idea really.
-
The only holdup on this is my insanely overbooked life.
-
Okay, all of Simms' lines are in SVN, we're in pretty good shape. I need to cut together the Simms/Laporte Sunglare dialog but all the laborious take-picking is done.
-
Suddenly, the hype intensifies... again.
Can hardly wait for the release of the voiced version (of these parts).

Get hype.

I'm relatively new to the HLP community, and I discovered this a few months ago. I don't normally say things like this, but the wait is literally killing me.

Reopening auditions for a flash requirement. Can anyone get me reads on Reshadiye Control?

As incentive, here is a treat: Simms likes you (https://clyp.it/whct0gh1)

Could probably give it a go on the weekend. My schedule is shot at least until Friday. Do you have a time frame you're trying to meet?

You're trying to incentivize us with a 404? OK I'LL DO IT
(... wait i have no mic... ****)

Is that 404ing for you?
-

ASAP, but don't break your back over it.

Just wanna say, there's no 404 on that link for me, it works. Also, HYPE!
-
welp it was and now it isn't!
-
No 404.... Not exactly that how I imagined Simms, but still, her laughter breaks it all!

That laugh reminded me of Chelsea fans singing...
CELERYYYY... CELERRYYYY!

Then we'll tickle her bum
With a lump of Celery...

That's not a Vishnan beam, though, it's a Tev beam as heard from inside the ship when it breaks through.

That one sent a chill up my spine.

Feels like it could use a warning claxon in the background (That was always super impactful) and have a very abrupt ending... other than that, :shaking:
-
Found a Reshadiye (thank you MageKing). We need an Admiral Recamai.
-
Is the admiral's voice running through a typical Vasudan translator?
-
Yes, we'll supply the Vasudan chatter.
-
Is it .wav now or still .ogg? Nevermind :ick:
-
Hey you guys great job!
I hope you guys can also remix the usual friendly pilots voices, coz original Free Space 1 had like monotone... boring american voices.
Free space 2 had younger more cooler american voices;
AOA Blue Planet started having australian/british voices;
AOA War in Heaven obviously is a WIP.
So I hope we get back to having voices that were like FS2 - i mean not necessarily american - but more younger and more vibrant and fast paced
Btw i dont mean like your main characters, i mean have new voices for your friendly pilots and new death screams and stuff
-
We have a new set of pilot personas. Not quite as many as I'd like, since we had to use the same script for male and female VAs due to labor constraints, but they're solid.
-
Looking for more Masyaf Controls and Recamais.
-
Point me in the direction of the script and I can give it a go with a half mancunian/half welsh accent haha!
Edit:- I could post-process the voice as well to make it sound like it has come over a radio if needs be!
-
Sound processing will be handled by the team; just send them your raw voice (you can and should process for noise cancelling, but that's about it).
-
Script is in the first post, though it's under the crossout. You can still click it.
-
There aren't any background sounds at my place to cancel, ha~!
I suppose I'll send something in too, probably later today, if I can manage it.
-
There aren't any background sounds at my place to cancel, ha~!
In every recording there is always some room noise. It can be anything from light bulbs, to minor air movements in a room, to even the echo of your voice off parallel walls, that's why vocal booths are deadened with foam and non parallel walls and ceilings. That's the true value of the noise cancellation. It removes a great deal of mic hiss, room noise and echo. :)
-
I'm gonna give the Masyaf Control a go on Friday when I got the house to myself and won't have to worry about any interruptions.
After I've recorded something suitable, I will probably put the sample through a noise gate to cancel out any microphone hiss and background noise that there might be. I was originally thinking a compressor, but I don't think it would do the job properly... though I might try both to see which gives the most desirable result.
Ok, my audition for Masyaf Control is in. I hope it is liked and if I am required for any other parts, just let me know! :)
I hope the samples are of high enough audio quality. They have been recorded via a Creative HS950 headset into Sound Forge Pro 10!
-
Thanks dudes. Need more Recamais still!
-
Do we have to apply any filters to make it sound like fresh out of a translator? Or do you only need the raw material and apply any filters by yourself?
-
Only raw materials.
-
Wait, you're still looking for auditions? :wtf: The OP makes it sound like you're done.
My Recamai take from before got passed over (womp womp) so I won't submit that, but is there anything else?
EDIT: Passed over! Ha! (It's the first night of Passover (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Passover).)
-
After all that I said... things came up...
There's way too much noise at my place right now. It should be better tomorrow...
-
After all that I said... things came up...

Haha! That's why I haven't commited myself to any major parts as I never know when I would be able to have this room free. For instance, the missus is currently watching Big Bang Theory, so I have no chance of recording anything! Generally, I just wait til she buggers off shopping! :)
-
Regardless of how dearly I would love to help this project along, I think I would hate myself if I came across my hick accent in BP. So alas, I'm trying my best to wait patiently! :banghead:
-
What needs doing?
-
What needs doing?
Need more Recamais still!
Last I asked (on IRC), that was still the case (and the only thing needed).
-
I'll give this a go today if there are no other entries!
-
I can't see the lines anywhere.
-
I found them and I have now submitted an audition for Admiral Recemai.
Also, I've resubmitted my Masyaf audition as I wasn't satisfied with one of the lines in my previous submission
Hope they are good enough! :)
Edit:- Colonel Dekker, they are on page 253 of the script.
-
That link on page one with the red line through it works?
:banghead:
-
Yep!
-
Too noisy around... then it quiets down.
... and now, I'm sick. So, my voice is terrible.

And it should sound like it! try this mix (https://clyp.it/dqzbetmi)
The beam charge up sound sounds like it's coming from the transmitting ship. Wouldn't it just sound like a very quiet or nonexistent charge-up followed by the (awesome, btw) clippy static explosion effect? Or is the charge-up sound the beam blasting against hull before it breaks through? (But then why does it increase in frequency?)
-
Or is the charge-up sound the beam blasting against hull before it breaks through?
Yes.
(But then why does it increase in frequency?)
Acoustics of different armor layers?
-
Would the armor layers vary like that smoothly as it's being ablated away? It would make more sense to me personally if it was a sharp, turbulent attack followed by relatively little change. If someone had a jackhammer (pretend it's silent because we're in space) trying to bust through your roof, it would sound like a sudden, muffled rumbling attack that only changes little in pitch before busting through and being loud as hell.
Pseudophysics aside, my main point is that there might be listener confusion as to what the sound is supposed to be. IMO it sounds too similar to what beam spool ups sound like, and not enough like what a big blow torch might sound like exploding a hole in the side of your space boat.
-
My understanding is that the preview linked earlier is not the final version of the effect.
-
After listening to that beam charge... I just suddenly thought... is that one of my beam warm ups! If so... happy dayz! :D
-
Has there been any additional progress?
Last Battuta post suggested he only needed more Recamai submissions. Have these been received/chosen/committed?
Also...
I've got some free time coming up around the middle of June, I'd be happy to help you with that playtesting and polishing. Just let me know what I can do to get this to the finish line.
-TechnoD11
-
Last word on the subject was "nearly done", but Battuta is currently on hiatus from HLP (and is unlikely to finish the project within the next few months, given how busy he currently is with the aforementioned three-book contract).
-
Having all of BP released and finished by the 20th anniversary of fs2 would be ideal, I feel. Still no progress, damn.
-
I understand that most roles are done but the last few pages implied the team were still looking for alternative options for some voices? I've just recently picked up a far better mic than I used to have and would be happy to contribute my Australo-Kiwi hybrid sound to this, unless you've got enough of us already. ;)
-
Hell yeah. Feel free to take on any of the roles from Artemis Station except for Mence.
-
Oh man! Wish I had known about BP earlier so that I could have tried out for Al-Dawa!
-
Oh man! Wish I had known about BP earlier so that I could have tried out for Al-Dawa!
That may become an option in the future.
-
Not to mention that
Al-Dawa can easily be voiced by multiple people.
But yes, this only covered acts 1 and 2, so there are plenty of Act 3 roles that haven't been cast (although we're unlikely to see an Act 3 Voice Acting Death March for quite a while).
-
Given how insanely resource-intensive the death march has been, and how much development tempo it's cost, another march should probably wait a while.
-

Volunteers to record voice lines.
Comes down with epic flu that kills voice completely for a week.
-
Submitted some voice parts for things that still needed doing. Any idea how long it'll be until I hear back? I'd like to record more but need to know if my voice will be useful.
-
I'm pretty ****ed for the next few months, work-wise. Sorry. :(
I can try to give you a quick listen and my gut response, though...
Your mic is clean, and you have decent delivery. Unfortunately I've lost track of whether we need any more very small roles filled. Maybe a couple in the Artemis Station cutscene.
-
Oh, thank you for replying so quickly! I'll look into those Artemis station parts. With you swamped could someone else take on the mantle and get the work done for you until you're free again?
If that would be too complicated for the existing Acts, perhaps someone could take the script for Act III and start assembling parts for it?
-
We've tried using other voice coordinators in the past, and they've done great work, but in the end it's generally come down to my time.
A handoff would be ideal but I can't really figure out how to pull it off. It's frustrating, because two solid weeks of good work should wrap up everything we need for release.
-
What work needs to be done, exactly?
-
A lot of mixing to make sure lines pop through music and SFX, pickups on a few missing/misdelivered lines, playing through a few times to look for missing lines, Dreamscape tutorials for 2 more of the Act 3 missions. A sweep through the whole story from AoA to Act 3 to make sure no bugs creeped in and to spot a few opportunities for polish. Maybe a cool bonus mission. Probably some other stuff.
-
I've never actually done mixing or I'd volunteer. What about the possibility of releasing an alpha of the voice pack now to crowd source exactly what lines need fixing, and find any bugs or rough spots?
-
If that would be too complicated for the existing Acts, perhaps someone could take the script for Act III and start assembling parts for it?
IIRC, somebody was actually doing this (Aesaar, I think?), but the script for Act 3 is, uh, massive. So it would probably be on par with the amount of effort for acts 1 & 2, which would be severely draining, to say the least.
What I'm saying is, don't hold your breath.
-
The biggest hurdle is just getting people. Someone with the skills and a decent amount of free time could pull everything off, but while many have the time, most lack the skill required for something that matches the quality of the source material.
To be honest, while I'd love to see the remaining Blue Planet acts get voice-acted, each act is such a massive, time-consuming undertaking that it's pretty much unfeasible to attempt in a manner that people haven't already forgotten about it. This project started in... what, mid-2013? It's claimed the sanity of at least two people who tried to spearhead it, myself included (though my time in the military towards the end severely hampered my ability to do stuff, so...).
-
We managed to get the talent needed to make the main characters in Act 1+2 sing. It just took a couple grand out of my pocket. I really do want to get it done! I'm just not sure how I'll pull it off before my next book is done.
-
If it's a matter of organizing the script into sound files, soliciting them, sorting the resulting files into which ones sound promising, communicating with all the people who send files and helping them do so, that stuff I could do if it would help to get Act III started.
-
Stilll happy to submit more auditions if you (Battuta) think there's something I might be a good fit for. I really thought you guys were done though. That's how the OP makes it sound.
EDIT: Sounds like the real limiting factor is the time you can dedicate to it though.
-
We're done collecting voices, more or less. I just need to do a couple more days of mixing and design work.
-
I meant for getting Act III started while I and II is finished up, General :)
-
I know. But I don't think we can afford to start on that. With our current production budget (not just money - it's more about manpower and attention!) we'd kill any chance of Act 4-5 being released if we tried to voice Act 3 right now. I know you want to help! I'm really grateful. But our experience with voice work in the past has been that it mostly ends up falling back on me.
And in any case, the new Dreamscape tutorials for act 3 missions mean the script is still growing. :shaking:
-
Okay. How done is the script for Act IV, by the way?
-
Barely started.
-
Okay, good to know.
I'm still thinking of the idea of releasing an alpha voice pack to help with some of the remaining work.
-
As a gift to myself for getting the novel out, I'm going to spend this upcoming week trying to finish the voice acting.
Anyone who wants to come hang out on IRC starting tomorrow is very welcome!
This project is really important to me and I want to finish the last push. I'm excited to show you the new Vishnan guns, the Dreamscape tutorials, and the other fun stuff. I don't think Atreus Command will make the cut :(
-
This is going to be a little messy. We are missing a scattering of 20-30 lines scattered across various roles. I don't see a realistic alternative right now except to leave them unacted.
Crunching away on hopefully the last dreamscape tutorial tonight.
-
This is going to be a little messy. We are missing a scattering of 20-30 lines scattered across various roles. I don't see a realistic alternative right now except to leave them unacted.
How did that happen? Were the lines just missed when compiling the script, or were they added afterwards, or is it just "voice actor didn't include the line and it wasn't noticed until now" (or some combination thereof)?
-
Some lines missed while compiling the mammoth script, some lines assigned to the wrong role, some lines just skipped by actors.
-
Battuta, send me a message, will ya? I'd be happy to belt out some lines if needed.
-
Well that's vaguely horrifying. I'd be willing to volunteer for slave labor over the next week or so until classes start up again, for what little its worth.
-
Needless to say, I'd be happy to re-record entire roles if need be (but I suspect that would just be more work on your part; if the initial release needs to be missing a couple dozen lines, then so be it).
-
Honestly, I'd say it's best just to leave the lines not done for now. WiH will benefit hugely from a voice-acted release (I know people who won't touch WiH until it has voice acting) even if it's not perfect. This has been a mammoth undertaking with many issues along the way. And, when it comes to fan projects, getting a release in the first place is beneficial to being stuck in development hell. People will understand - and lines can always be patched in in today's day and age.
Even with a few missing lines here and there, it's not the end of the world. WiH is a product I'd be happy paying a lot of money for - so a few missing lines are more than acceptable in exchange for not paying a cent. Push through to a release and then patch things in when time permits (and when you can contact the actors, I imagine!) These things happen. It's unfortunate but they happen all the same. BP is a product that has been knocked together by volunteers and is one of the best sci-fi experiences in recent years with a level of professional polish and thought that just eclipses other projects - with that in mind, I really do think people would understand if there are some rough edges here and there, particularly given everything else you do, Battuta.
Releasing it with a note that, due to unforeseen circumstances, some lines have been lost would be my recommendation as a fan of BP. It's unfortunate, sure - but it's not like big games like Fallout don't have VAs switching mid-dialogue on some characters or lines that are missing. But I'd prefer a rough release to just watching WiH with VA perpetually linger like this, always just a little bit of time away from release.
-
It's a tiny fraction of the script.
My current plan is to try to fix it anyway. (This is a change of heart from yesterday.) I'm going to reactivate the casting director we hired and reach out to actors I have on tap. It should only take a few emails, maybe some money, and meanwhile I can work on FRED ****.
If necessary we can recast small/midsized roles. I'd also be deeply grateful for volunteers to handle stupid tiny tasks for me. Believe it or not, most of the bottleneck here is cognitive: it's a nightmare keeping track of all the scripts, files, filters, actors, and errors required to fix everything.
Could someone grab me the script for the GTCv Arethusa and post it here?
-
And I'm gonna live all the lines where Simms says 'VAW-soo-dons' and chalk it up to Martian accent.
-
Has this project taught you and the team any useful lessons about doing a massive voice-acting project (besides that it's hard)?
Do you plan to VA future chapters of WiH?
-
If anyone can track down 'Darkblade' I really need to get in touch.
-
GTCv Arethusa
File: bp211s037.ogg
GTCv Arethusa to Federation vessels. The Pesedjet is under our protection. Stand down your vessels and leave, or we will open fire.
File: bp211s040.ogg
Don't make me laugh, Captain. Medical mission? This is clearly another attack on our logistics by a desperate military. Leave now, or suffer the consequences.
File: bp211s042.ogg
Acknowledged, Pesedjet. We believe some Gaian Effort cells may be working for the Federation's black ops unit. This is likely an attempt on your ship.
File: bp211s044.ogg
These records seem to check out, Captain Apries. But we've got bigger problems. Your ship's hull integrity is dropping fast. We need to deploy teams to help contain internal fires and lock down damage.
File: bp211s045.ogg
Captain Sorenson, unless you want a firefight aboard a dying ship, withdraw at once. Your rescue efforts are neither welcome nor needed. We will use force if necessary.
File: bp211s051.ogg
A little insurance policy, Captain Sorensen. You want to do things your way, fine. Help out the Vasudans, but no reinforcements.
File: bp211s056.ogg
We've got repair technicians with heavy field equipment on board the Sampson. Standard procedure for answering a stricken vessel. You could learn from our example next time.
File: bp211s057.ogg
And your transport carries only the barest medical facilities, Captain. If your engineers save the ship, we'll save the crew. Once the Pesedjet is out of danger...we'll work from there.
File: bp211s059.ogg
Touche, Captain Sorensen. Here's my proposal. We stand down, and you do the same. We both pool our resources, fix up this Vasudan hauler, and then we go our separate ways.
File: bp211s060.ogg
The Vasudans continue to help us supply, while you gain favour with Khonsu for when you negotiate the terms of your surrender.
Anybody know who darkblade is?
e: Actually I'm pretty much sure who it is now.
-

If you can think of an automated script that could help keep track of something, I can probably write it.

You know how to reach me if you need any help Seth, and you also know my voice is half decent if you need any small roles recast.

If anyone can track down 'Darkblade' I really need to get in touch.

I have to admit, I have no idea if I recorded GTCv Arethusa. Could you throw the previous voice overs to me? Send the link to me as a private message or drop 'em to me at mmajanoja (at) gmail.com . It might be a really long time when I recorded 'em since I don't have the original recordings in my archive.

You're right, I'm wrong. Looks like the Arethusa was recorded by one Clive Scerri.
Anyone have any idea how to contact 'Clive Scerri', or what this person's username might be? We are missing two lines. (I found a possible candidate on LinkedIn, gonna hit him up).
Failing that, please feel free to take a crack at the Arethusa yourselves!
-
There are only two people with that name as far as I can see, and one of them appears to be a preteen. I think you have the right one (preteen isnt on linkedin).
-
We got the right Clive! Boy, the internet is scary sometimes.
Hilariously, I was only able to contact him because he'd sent me a friend request...on LinkedIn. So I had to reactivate my LinkedIn account after eight years of death!
-
Getting pickups for a bunch of other missing lines too. I think we can pull this off. :pimp:
It's so good, you guys, I'm really happy.
-
Hell yeah.
-
Your enthusiasm is contagious and inspiring. :yes2:

Thanks for all the hard work that everyone here (and the others I'm unable to contact) have done to put this together. So damn pumped!!!

Can't wait :drevil:

Hi All,
I've been dark for a while due to real life in the way once again... but I should be finding some more free time very soon!
So Mr Battuta, sir! If you cannot find that Clive geezer... I will have a crack at that those lines! I will see about getting it done later on today (11:22am as I write this) and I will email them to you... IF you still need the lines done! Hell... I might just send them anyway just incase you prefer them!
Cheers,
Gee
-
Received!
-
Excellent! :)
I hope they will suffice (certainly as fillers) until you find someone better (probably not too hard haha)!
-
Got a Recamai in, got pickups from Laporte and Karen!
-
This project is really important to me and I want to finish the last push. I'm excited to show you the new Vishnan guns, the Dreamscape tutorials, and the other fun stuff. I don't think Atreus Command will make the cut :(
What was Atreus Command supposed to be? (Or is it better not to know if it's not making the cut :()
Good luck with the project, btw, very excited to see it.
-
Atreus Command was gonna be you would fly the Atreus.
-
If you will not make a mission where the player flies the Atreus, I will.
(Maybe. Someday. On top of a bunch of other projects. But still, this needs to exist.)

I double that, i would even help on the project. Capships for life.
-
Could you tell us why you dropped the Atreus mission, without spoilers of course?
Do you have half-completed mission files or table entries for it? ;7
-
When you're trying to get something out the door you have to triage features that'll take time to implement.

Features. Thats the case. Very well, looking forward what you have there for us in stock, Battuta, the best FRED'er on Earth ;)

Hot damn! but i'm not qualified
Seriously though, that sounds like a very "extra" thing to have, so whenever or even if it's done is great.

Got a Recamai in, got pickups from Laporte and Karen!
I know I submitted a Recemai a while back. I think I still have it. I could send it too you again if you like, so let me know if you want it!
If not... no worries! :)

The whole mix is done. Voice acting is basically complete.
I would like to get a few more takes for Artemis Station, and we're missing one or two other lines (particularly from the Arethusa - might have to recast...) but it's effectively finished.

Thanks to those of you who've submitted - I need more!
-
Welp. I went ahead with my submission too.
Figured; why not, right?
-
Urgently need reads on these four (or improv your own on the same theme):
"We can't hold, Artemis! Captain Mence, if we can't kill that ship we don't have a prayer!"
"The Cormorant's gone! We can't stop the Atreus! Captain Mence, we need orders!"
"The Atreus is bearing straight for you, Artemis! Captain Mence, if we can't kill that ship we lose Jupiter!"
"We can't stop the Atreus! Captain Mence, if we can't kill that ship we lose Jupiter!"

Do you have particular file names, or should we just pick something?
-
They're all bp200s5.ogg
-
Not to be anal about it, but does that mean that we just pick which one of those that we think we can voice the best and send it in?
Or did you want multiple different versions?
-
I got a good take for the role, don't worry about it.
-
Down to ten action items before DC beta. Very close!

AH!!!!!!!!

I want a detached, clinical, (female if possible) read on this, think Combine Overwatch

-
Is that Shivan fighter dialogue? :wtf:
Sure sounds like it, judging by the messages from them in Universal Truth.
Now I'm even more excited to see Act 4.
-
Spent all day yesterday and today trying to make Universal Truth 1 fun and balanced again since the new Erebus is a ****ing killing machine. Still haven't quite cracked it. On book tour for a week - see you all afterwards!
-
So at least a week until we see release? :shaking:
-
More - we'll need time for beta. Sorry!
-
Take your time, it is looking great
-
More - we'll need time for beta. Sorry!
I was dreaming big! The stream is looking incredible, by the way - happy to wait now that the end is in sight.
-
I'm back from tour and back on the case.
-
Hoping for a Tuesday release, bugs permitting.
-
I don't know about everybody else, but I'm certainly hyped!
-
Hoping for a Tuesday release, bugs permitting.
To think that after all this waiting and anticipation I'm going to have to hold off on playing until after SAT testing on Saturday.
:ick:
Also, will the voice acting release also include asset updates, like the erebus and new titan? Or is it just a voice pack for the current campaign?
-
It's a lot more than a voice pack.
-
Based on previous comments (plus The E's streams of the beta version) it includes not only new assets, but also weapon rebalancing and tweaks going all the way back to AoA, as well as new features, including tutorial sections in Act 3's dreamscape to help prepare new players for the unfamiliar gameplay mechanics of those missions.
-
We've added content, rebalanced missions from the start of AoA to the end of WiH Act 3, added new ships, remodeled old ships, remixed music, rebalanced FS2 guns, redesigned the BP2 weapons suite, tweaked everything, hidden a bunch of new features in AoA, rewritten a lot of Act 3, redesigned Act 1+2 missions, fixed bugs, it's really a hell of a thing.
-
Just when I thought 2015 couldn't throw more amazing games for me to play, the Blue Planet folks just had to add another gem to the pile. Blue Planet ranks up there with the likes of triple A releases like the Witcher 3 or Phantom Pain.
-
I guess this means I'm going to have to take a break from planning my Duna mission in KSP. BP is way more important!
-
But I just finished my AoA run! You're saying I'll have to play it all again?! THE HORROR :P
-
for the people using the PBR builds of the engine are the new models/textures worked to take advantage of this (probably not but i'm really hopeing so)
-
No, and they won't be until we have a separate texture slot for baked Ambient Occlusion.

From our odyssey into Hell, we have returned with a gift: the Ancient technology to build a portal between Delta Serpentis and Sol.
To restore the link to our blue planet.
To return home after all these years.
Today. Barring disasters.

Err, 2 questions, if I may. Has 'The Blade Itself' been voiced? If not, will it be?
Also, will this include Lepanto's Atreus mission or will it be realased as part of his Battle Captains series?
*hyping intensifies*
-
TBI has been voiced.
Battle Captains/Atreus will be out as soon as it's done. We're not there yet, unfortunately.

Count off, everyone. Who's a go!

i for one am immensely anticipating my breakout role in the world of voice acting

I'm proud of you all.

*salutes*
Congratulations, ladies and gentlemen.
-
Just incase it needed to be said again: You guys are all ****ing amazing, and I am SO glad I checked back in this week!
-
The Cast I've heard so fare is really really good for an Hobby Project.
But... who the hell speaks Simms? You couldn't find a better voice actor for her! She sounds almost... sexy.. Oh uh :warp:
-
Simms is amazing. Although, the briefings are a bit fast, at times.
Was there a limit on time?
-
I love Sergei Gwilym's voice
