While Diaspora isn't quite at the point where we are ready to start adding the voice acting just yet, we've reached the point where we can start looking for people. Having an idea what sort of people we'll have available means that we can tailor some of our roles to fit them a bit better rather than simply waiting until everything is done and expecting our actors to read their lines like robots (Unless we decide to add a 1st CW Raider to our R1 line up. In which case we'll want you to sound exactly like a robot. :p ).
Since Shattered Armistice doesn't show any events explicitly shown by the TV show we don't need people to do impressions of the cast. If you can do a good Adama impression, that's great but we don't need it just yet. We'd still love to hear it though. :D
We have a variety of major and minor parts we'll need to fill. We're going to start with stuff from message.tbl as that is the most generic stuff. For those of you who don't know much about the engine, message.tbl handles the generic stuff from the redshirts you fly with like "Behind you!" or "DRADIS contacts!"
Here's a list of sample entries.
- All Clear - "Area clear, no DRADIS contacts."
- Arrive Enemy - "Hostiles on DRADIS."
- Attack My Target - "Copy that, this kill is mine."
- Backup - "Backup has arrived, standing by for your orders."
- Red Team Arrived - "Red team reporting in."
- Check your six - "Check your six! Check your six!"
- Death - "Systems failing... I can't---"
- Green Team Arrived - "This is Green Team, awaiting orders.."
- Depart - "Copy that, breaking off and heading home."
- Disable My Target - "Wilco sir, disabling their engines."
- Disarm My Target - "Copy that, disarming your target."
- Engage Enemy - "It's about time! Weapons are hot!"
- Purple Team Arrived - "This is Purple team, ready for orders."
- Blue Team Arrived - "This is Blue team, ready for action."
- Help - "No joy! No joy! Get this bandit off me!"
- Ignore My Target - "Wilco, seeking other targets."
- No - "I'm sorry sir, I can't do that."
- No Target - Dosing up on chamalla, sir? DRADIS is clear..."
- Friendly Fire - "Friendly fire! Break off!"
- Player Dead - "What's your status sir? Sir? SIR?!"
- Praise Player Kill - "Nice aim, sir!"
- Praise Own Kill - "Target splashed, sir!"
- Praise Player Getting Multiple Kills - "You're on fire today, sir!"
- Out of Missiles - "Damn, I'm out of ammo!"
- Need Repair - "I'm getting fraked up here!"
- Stray/AWOL/Desertion Warning - "You're going the wrong way, sir."
- Traitor - "Time to die, traitor!"
- Yes - "Copy that."
- Low on Fuel - "I'm Bingo Fuel sir."
- Out of Fuel - "Shutting down engines, sir."
- Out of Bullets - "Guns are dry sir."
You may choose to record these or you can try to record a set of lines that cover the same situations but with different words. Feel free to be creative but bear in mind that Colonial pilots won't always be facing Cylons (for instance in multiplayer TvT) and any messages that do refer to toasters are going to sound rather strange there. Try to keep swearing to a very occasional frak or gods damn. We'd like to see all the lines covered so that we can judge your range.
In general we're probably simply going to use your lines to judge your acting ability prior to a callback but the team reserve the right to use any voice acting samples sent to us (with credit) in any way we see fit for the game. (I say that mainly so that we don't have any issues if we can't contact someone who provides samples but want to use them in the game anyway).
Make sure that any voice acting you send us is as clear as possible. You may be the next Robert De Niro but it won't count for anything if we can hardly hear your voice over pops, clicks and the whine of your processor fan. Each of the lines should be in a separate 16bit 44khz stereo wav file. The entire set should then be archived (preferably rar or 7zip) before emailing them to diasporavoices [AT] googlemail.com. Please do not send mp3 files as we can't use them in the game so they will most likely be filed in the bin.

I sent mine in earlier. One thing that you may want to try and play with if you get enough contributers is the idea that different accents correlate with different colonies. You might find some ships are crewed mostly by Aeralon people, for example. Or you could take a little creative license, and use other accents (eg. Aussie) for one of the other colonies (saaayy... Picon or something).
There's a bunch of info (probably non-canon, but hey) on the makeup of the colonies and their representation in the RPG sourcebook, so you could tie it in with that
-
Cat had a very peculiar accent; as well as Baltar :P ( and yeah, he does not fly.. )
Ok, if I access to the appropiate equipment to record stuff then I'll send you some too. This is not going to be easy though..
-
Just heard about Diaspora earlier today from a fellow BSG fan... he saw the voice acting casting call and directed me here. I actually do voice acting semi-professionally (as in good enough to get paid, but not often enough that it's actually a career) and have been on a couple of mods before (as always, usually having to do with something I'm a fan of; and being a huge BSG fan, couldn't pass this up).
I won't be able to get any studio recording time in till the weekend, but would passing along samples of other work I've done suffice till then?
-
The casting call will be open until at least mid-April so there is no huge rush.
I'll update the thread with a warning a week before I close it so no need to worry it will be closed tomorrow. :)
-
Dropped a load to your gmail account. :pimp:

Sinful! Clean it up at once :P
Anyway, I'll look into recording these and send an e-mail off to you.
-
Hi, I'm ghost001's wife. I'll probably be submitting my stuff to you guys in a day or two, at least, if my voice clears up. I'll definitely send them before Wednesday (will be on the road and then in MD at Grandma's, she doesn't own a computer and I'll be there for a month).
-
Cool. BSG is one of the few sci-fi shows to have a fairly equal ratio of women to men as fighter pilots so the more women who apply, the better. :)
-
So I tried recording on my microphone, but the quality sucked as there's too much confusio... I meant noise. Is there any way I can reduce background noise? :S

Do you have a laptop? Move into a different room
If not, turn down the sensitivity on the microphone, on audacity I use 0.1 to great effect :)

Audacity (http://audacity.sourceforge.net/) also had a built in plugin for ambient background noise cancellation. Just record a couple of additional seconds of ambient noise before you start speaking, and it will do a decent job of then removing that ambient noise from the period when you're speaking.
-
I'm an aussie so if you need some one to trial let me know
-
Surely the thread is already letting you know. :p
-
do we want to have non-nativ speakers?
-
12 colonies = at least 12 accents. Is there a cylon accent, or they adapt? :)
-
I guess there should be more than 12 accents. Each colony would be various in terms of dialects.
-

They adapt, I guess. Remember D'Anna Bier's introduction? While she was with the fleet, she had a New Zealand accent, but the Three (?) that appeared at the end of that episode in a movie theater on Caprica had an american accent. So, their accents seem to depend on wether or not they were infiltrating colonial society.
-
Adapting is extremely important, unless you live with Sagittarians... :nervous:
-
I've sent mine in. :)
-
I just sent mine in, let me know how it goes.
-

Frakin' dirt worshipping saggies. They got their wish in the end didn't they.
-
I'm "negotiating" with a girl with an excellent voice register. This way we send male and female samples from here :)
By the way, those who have fulfilled and sent the required list , you guys could add some link to a separate recorded "frak" wave file as well.. Post your better frak. I collect fraks ... I think this could deserve a new thread though :P
-
hello everyone! i'm torc... maybe someone of you reminds me in btrl forum!
ok...tath's the point...i am italian and i am a singer too...if you want i can try to record something 'cause i have the right instrument for a very good quality voice and i can read the english very well (i can't tell the same thing for writing unfortunely)
let me know if you're interested ok? i offer my time for mixing and equalizing voices too...
-
y o u = you = your mum? :S
-
ehm...just another thing....i hope we don't have to wait 2 years for playing this game :D after all this time and the BTRL'delusion, we pretend it! it's a respect thing! :hopping: :hopping: :D
-
Now random posts get replaced with that?. This is what he actually said:
ehm...just another thing....i hope we don't have to wait 2 years for playing this game :D after all this time and the BTRL'delusion, we pretend it! it's a respect thing! :hopping: :hopping: :D
EDIT: Wait, what? Now it's back to normal again. For a second there, I read something about a pregnancy...
-
All right guys and girls, let's try to keep to the topic.
As for the waiting time, that's the whole point of this thread. Faster we can find a good enough set of actors, faster we can start finalising the dialogue. :)
-
Have just sent my monotone of doom! :P
-
just one thing...where i have to send my wave or mp3 files?
-
Email address is in the first post. And don't send .mp3s.
-
Ok, I didn't get the chance to send the stuff in, and I'm leaving El Paso in like an hour or so, but we'll be at a motel or something with WiFi, so I can do it then on my hubby's laptop. Wish me luck with that (lol).
-
ok...i've send my voices...let me know if they are arrived!!!! :shaking: :shaking:
-
Question: If i use a Mac (or Macbook to be more precise), what application do i need to record? (Free apps preferred) and after I record it, what do I need to do with the file?
-
Audacity (http://audacity.sourceforge.net/) is available for the Mac. Record your lines and save them in wav format (with the settings from the original post) and that's it.
-
Adapting is extremely important, unless you live with Sagittarians... :nervous:
Fraking gods damned dirt-worshipping sagies...
-
Out of curiosity is there a reason .ogg files aren't being accepted or have I mis/skim-read something?
-
They're a lossy format. They can't be edited and re-saved without some loss of quality.
-
ehi guys! have you found some good candidate? have you start to put some dialogue in the game? (ehi i'm just excited for this new project!)
-
We're not going to cast anyone for another couple of weeks as we'd like to have a bit more choice for voice actors.
-
ok thanks... remember i offer to you my max disponibility... if i can help i'm here... after all diaspora is our game too ! ;)
-
Hi folks.
New to this forum, even though I'm neither new to voice acting or RDM's Battlestar Galactica.
Anyways, I registered here right after sending my samples, with the same account name as on moddb. Not only for that, of course, but also to take a look around. ;)
-
When will you submit feedback on the samples received?
No pressure, just curious. I started seeing Battlestar Galactica as soon as I heard of this project and became passionate about it. The waiting is killing me... ;)
-
We probably won't give much feedback beyond "you got in/you didn't get in" I doubt anyone has the time for much else.
-
Just sent in my own!
I've been lurking around this mod for quite some time... When I saw you guys were doing auditions I decided I should try to contribute a bit too. Never done any real voice acting before, but I think they came out pretty well.
Good luck!
-
Thanks a lot. Keep em coming guys.
-
will we be notified if ours are any good, or if they are unclear and need redoing?
-
Was there a set deadline for having to send samples in, or is it just a case of the team deciding that they have enough samples to pick from for R1?
-
will we be notified if ours are any good, or if they are unclear and need redoing?
Yes. But we're mostly waiting and seeing what comes in for now.
I think I'll leave this open another week and then we'll see what we have.
-
Out of curiosity, how many people have sent in samples?
-
I think I'll make some recordings for you tomorrow when I get some free time. I haven't really done voice acting before, but I think my accent stands out a little.
-
I'll record some later, I want my signature callsign in there.
-
I've got a Yorkshire accent (Baltar's 'Arielon'), so I'll get some voice samples done and sent. I love the fact there's a whole planet of Yorkshire in the Colonies! ;)
-
I sended mine... Damn my varying voice ptich.
-
I was extremely, and I mean extremely bored today. Results of which have been forwarded to your inbox :)
-
Edit: sent mine in. Here's to hoping a guy like me can get in!
-
I sent mine in weeks ago, but since everyone seems to be announcing that they sent theirs in, I feel obliged to join the club. So...I sent mine in.
-
Ehrm... Does one recieve confirmation that the files have been recieved?
-
Yeah, got your stuff. Thanks.
-
Mine as well? the file was to large to use my own email, so I had to go through a third party site. The file was labeled "Kodiak's Diaspora Audition", or something similar. My full contact info is in the .rar somewhere.
-
Yeah. I grabbed that. Probably better if anyone else uses a couple of rar files though. The expiration date on that file was the 23rd which meant if I didn't grab it, I'd probably lose it.
-
Try MediaFire. How long do I have, cause I can't do anything for a few days.
-
Apologies for taking so long on this even though I posted right after the call went out. Couple of local jobs have kept my recording time completely blocked off. Sent in the RAR just a moment ago. In the event it doesn't work I also included a link in the e-mail to a file hosted on my site.
-
Try MediaFire. How long do I have, cause I can't do anything for a few days.
Till Friday at least.
-
Cool.
-
Maybe I'm late... but are you still looking for voices?
-
As long as you can post on this thread, we're still looking.
-
i'll try to do one either tonight or friday...
-
Is it too late to submit for this?
-
As long as you can post on this thread, we're still looking.
-
/* .. at least read the last page.. lol :D */
Anyways.. **** happens.. no equipment no voice recording. Moreover my female voice actress candidate is pregnant.. so maybe in some near future
-
I just sent mine in.
-
I sent 36 voice samples to you today. I hope you will like and use them :)
-
Just sent mine in, hope there alright :)
-Fear33
-
Ummm I'm from Tennessee so my accent is southern is there a place for that because I would like to send a sample
-
I don't recall any Southern accents in the show but send one in and we'll see if we can use it. :)
-
Well they had a few different accents, Gaius's English Gentleman, The Tauron Accent, the prevalent American accent, a heavy African one IIRC...
-
Bulldog really didn't have much of an African accent, if that's who you're referring to.
-
I don't know who, I seem to recall one.
-
Probably the black market dude, then.
-
Maybe.
-
I swear he was the guy from predator that went complete tits-up haha..in that case he had an american accent
-
Yep, that was Bill Duke, who played Mac in Predator. His accent's completely American.
-
Okay guys, we've made the decision that we'll be closing the auditions on Saturday. After that although people may still apply it is fairly certain that they won't make it into R1 as we'll have already decided on the roles.
