I have installed the original Freespace 2 out of the box and I tried to install Fred 2 open. Unfortunately it doesn't find my installation, although it is in C: and in full sight?
Any help please, haven't played the game in 15 years.

You didn't say so.  There are more ways to install Fred2_open than with the FSO Installer.

Can you post a screenshot of your error?

Actually, I think I know why this installer doesn't work for me.  I have the original boxed game. The Fred 2 open is asking for the GOG version.
Will download and see if it is in fact the reason.

The actual reason is that the directory you pictured above is not where you installed FreeSpace 2 to. You need to either copy all files from your FS2 install there, or all files there to the directory where you installed FS2 to.

In fact, this looks like a Java project, which I'm guessing means that you extracted the installer rather than run it.

The installer is not something you unzip, it is a runnable Java archive, which means that you need Java to execute it.

Also it should run fine with either the boxed or GoG versions.

The only difference between the GOG version and the boxed version should pretty much just be the data2 and data3 folders, which contain the data that would normally be on the other discs, plus a couple other GOG-specific files; nothing that the FSO Installer or FSO itself actually care about. The important things for FSO are the VP files and the cutscenes.

Sorry guys, please bear with me . Still having installation problems. When I open Wx launcher there is no browse button?
if i click on the basic tab it shows C:\Freespace2 .I cannot find the open executable root folder from here.  This is doing my head in!!
What the hell am I doing wrong?

There should be a "Browse" button right next to the "Game root folder" textbox in the Basic Settings tab.

Ok ,I thought it meant at the top, anyway, this doesn't answer my problem. The wx installer cannot find my root executalble, the game is right there in C:\ , where the heck is it supposed to be?

So you really installed the game to C:\, not something like C:\whatever_folder\maybe_another_folder\? (In other words, does the location that has a "data" folder and files named "FS2" and "root_fs2" also have folders named "Program Files" and "Windows"?)

A couple of things :
- I find it odd that you've got fs2_open exes, but no FRED exes
- I find it extra odd that your fs2_open exes don't have an icon

My suspicion right now is that wxLauncher can't find the root executables because the ones you have aren't windows executables, which would explain the absence of FRED exes (FRED is windows only).

Can you re-run the installer and make sure you select a windows install.

this is peculiar, according to the installer I have already done this and it says mods up to date.

Try going to C:\Users\Mike and deleting the file called fsoinstaller.properties that should be in there. This will reset the Installer to "factory default". If you then run the Installer, it should download everything you select and not think twice about it.
