Title: Freespace Music Remixes
Post by: Danimal on March 07, 2012, 12:24:16 pm
Hello,

My "real" name is Dan Wentz. I was fortunate enough to contribute to both of these games and they will forever be a huge part of me. I've also contributed to this project years back. For those interested, just a heads up that I've recently created an account on sound cloud and have started to redo the music from two of my favorite games of all time.  This all started as a discussion with a friend of mine on Facebook of all places. The guy asked me what the main menu music for Descent 2 would sound like now. As I was never happy with how the general midi translated to the masses, I took that as an opportunity. And I can't tell you how much fun it is to revisit some of my favorite projects ever.

Check them out here, probably several more on the way.

If you have any particular requests, I'm all ears.  Thanks for supporting.

This is awesome. I've only listened to the FreeSpace 2 credits music so far -- the increased quality is remarkable.

I know nothing whatsoever about audio, but it felt like some of the -- I'm grappling for useful terms here -- the really sweeping, epic bits of the original were toned down a bit, maybe out of concerns for dynamic range? I'm thinking in particular of 1:27-1:50ish, and 2:40-3:04, which were the big goosebumps-and-chills moments in the original. They're a little more subdued now.

I'm only a listener here, I don't know anything about audio engineering, and I'm incredibly grateful for your work here.

e: Listening to them side by side, wow, the quality difference is enormous.

Mr. Wentz!  Hello and welcome!

It's amazing to be able to talk with the guy who has worked on assets for two of my favorite games of all time!

I'm sure the people at descentbb.net and other various descent forums would love to hear that Descent ][ Title mix. :)
I know I did.

I noticed you dropped off my youtube list as well, just hiding under miner wars now? (which people should check out if they haven't already ;x)

As always, awesome work buddy, especially that credit scroll track, holy carp! :D

I tend to agree with battuta though, there are a few bits that seem a little WIPish, especially in the FS2 mainmenu redux, I love the FS1 redux as well <3

I think it's just the big ..brass? instrument at the start of the FS2 mainmenu that unsettles me, everything else is freaking amazing

You Sir, are awesome! Thanks for the tracks! :)

well, since you asked...if you ever find some time, maybe even in not-so-distant future... ( you never know what may happen next week or so, maybe a Alien species blows up our sun, just for teh lulz...)...it'd be awesome to hear some new Freespace (related) tracks... :nervous:

After a decade, those games still kick ass, the Music enhances every single moment of the game, so thanks for that!

You are correct, as part of the facebook challenge, I allowed myself one day to re-create each of these.  In the case of the credits, I wanted to "nod" at the original elements but in a more subdued fashion. There are notes about each one in the description that go into more detail of what was used, etc.

You're very welcome!

I've something you may be interested in, I'll throw you a PM. Anyway I uhh... I don't know what to say, man.

I first played Descent Freespace when I was 7 years old, on an old Windows 95 rig my cousin had put together. Some of the best memories of my childhood. I'll never, ever forget the music.

I'm really not the type to kiss ass but... I just.. wow.

Holy crap, it's Dan Wentz!  Excuse us while we all freak out. :D

Welcome to HLP sir!  I believe we have a long-standing policy to allow the Volition guys their choice of custom title, although the most recent time it was used was when DaveB visited here long ago.  If you'd like any special text under your username, don't hesitate to ask.

And I definitely have a request in mind.  When you graciously provided that archive of historical FreeSpace music, there was an intriguing main hall track titled fs2betamainhall.  Since you've already remixed the FS1 and FS2 main halls, could you remix that one too?

Finally, I'd like to tell you about one other thing, but I'll PM you for that. :D

This sounds pretty promising.  :D

I found however that the FS2 Menu remix gave me a headache - it's too loud, too constantly, and so it's actually difficult to pick out the original theme in it.  I think that one would benefit from another pass.

Moving a little further down the page - is that Pink Floyd I recognise in one of those tracks?

mm, very nice! I gave these all a listen and I really like them so far. Keep it up, good sir.

EDIT: Though, the FS2 main menu one seems a bit iffy to me. It feels almost as if the two parts (drums and the other part) are trying to fight each other on who can be the loudest. I think the drums need to be less prominent and more of a background thing while the original bit of the song is more forefront.

Welcome to HLP and thanks so much for sharing these with us.

Looking at your other songs, it seems like you dabble in a wide variety of styles. What would you say are among your main influences?

Also as a fellow composer and producer, I've got to ask, what software do you use? :)

Awesome. Freespace 1 and 2 were both very atmospheric and immersive games, and that was due in large part to their amazing soundtracks. I salute you, sir.

As far as suggestions go, I'd like to echo karajorma's request for a mix of Briefing 4 and add on Briefing 5 as well. Both are great tracks and I'd love to hear more modernized versions of both.

Excellent! I love what I'm hearing.

I would love to hear the tracks title game03 and game04 from Descent II modernized myself. But...if you want FS, I would have to say the battle track of Exodus would be what I would like to see.

As a fan of both FS2 and OCRemix I just want to say what a shame it is that only one of your songs (http://ocremix.org/remix/OCR01410/) has a posted mix on OCR.

As to requests:
Either of the victory songs from FS2 could benefit from better samples or recording or whatever. They're just a bit muddled, B more than A I think.

OTOH, since you're playing with some old themes rather than creating polished replacements, I think the M4_normal group from FS1 are a good candidate. I can't pick from the three.

I notice some of the FS1 songs were remixed for FS2, e.g. m7_bttle 1-3 became FS2_bttle_g0 1-3. It would be interesting to see how your style has changed from FS1 to FS2 to now.

Nice to (kind) of meet you. those remixes are awesome!

question Mr. Dan Wentz: if there was a freespace 3 and you were composing the music what do you think the theme would be? FS2 was definitely something about lost hope and think the music reflected that perfectly ; FS1, well i suppose it's something like a glorious military anthem intertwined with syfy adventure up to the point you meet shivans.

Ok, as requested earlier today, I just (re)posted the Freespace Silent Threat Mission10 Redux.

About FS2 Intro, I would agree that I (deliberately) pushed the levels pretty hot on that puppy, the main instrument at the start is actually a solo contrabass... on steroids. :) Was going Hollywood, I guess? The nice thing is these are all MIDI tracks, no digital audio mixdowns yet, so it's extremely easy to tweak, adjust or even swap out instruments on any part at this stage.

Best,
Dan Wentz

HOLYCRAPZOMGIT'SDANWENTZ!

Sorry, I've been waiting all day for a chance to type that.  It is an honor to have you here. You have no idea how happy I am that I can finally say thank you so much for your wonderful work in giving this game its soul and character.

I fell instantly in love with FreeSpace from the first moment I played it.  Every scene and event filled me with awe.  After losing and rediscovering the install disks over the course of several years, I started to wonder just what it was about the game that made me love it so much.  It was the music.  It told stories the words never did.  Absolutely fantastic.  I still find myself instinctively humming the soundtrack from time to time.

Thank you, thank you, a million times, thank you.

If we're talking about remixes... one of my personal favorite tracks was M5 - Spook from FS1.  Do you think you could give this one a shot?

I just finished listeing to them all on my good sound system (as opposed to the crappy earbuds I had last night), and in all honesty, I really quite enjoy the FS2 MainMenu redux. Perhaps it comes with a fairly good sound system, but I never felt the instruments were competing in any way that wasn't completely intentional. It all felt dynamic and exciting, without (IMO) being overpowering.

Either way, this is absolutely wonderful work. Thanks for stopping by!

Yeah I mean, when I got my current set of (not even that awesome) headphones, I was like "I didn't know this thing existed in this song". And again when I got a cheap soundcard. Tru hi-fi gear would be great but even smaller investments really bring more spirit into music (and other audio stuff).

Aincents
Monolith
Chaser
Fortress
Marauder
Strike...

They're all solid gold, i like the Egypty sounding one from FS1, still findd myself going "dum, dum, dum, dum dum dee dum" now and then so, FS2 menu is equally awesome.

Yeah, I'm going to try to downplay my excitement, but this is kind of a big deal. I was introduced to Freespace in middle school, looking to expand my collection of descent and the mechassault games. I played freespace1 and 2 both online and offline so much to the exclusion of all other games that certain music you have produced has been etched into my brain. I humbly request, since you are taking requests, that you make some kind of remix for m7_nrml from freespace1, in particular m7_nrml1. This track had a very serious and immersive tone about it, at a point in the game where things were getting pretty serious. I have tried, with the little knowledge I have, to play this song using the piano by ear (can't read sheet music) and have been contemplating how it would sound as a remix/variation for some time.

Another one which I am quite fond of is m2_bttl1 and 2. I can't help resist jerking my head sideways to the beat grinning crazily as I go Vasudan hunting in the asteroid field.

I have an expanded list, as I grew a liking to the overall style of Freespace music (both one and two).

Just in case you're interested(in no particular order):

Freespace1
m2_nrml
m3_bttl1
m4_nrml1 especially the very beginning. Rumbles up in my head every now and again.
m5(general) Worked well with the Arjuna stealth mission like an evil parade
m8_bttl2,3

Freespace2
Brief 5
FS2_Amb_c01 If a portal were to up with a flagship from hell coming through it, this would be the track
Leviticus
Joshua
Exodus  A very signature endgame track

You also made the music for Descent 2? The music for mission 4 (descent) has been branded onto my brain next to the equation m4music = fusion cannon.

Lastly, thanks for all the lasting memories you helped create by adding your sound to a most memorable game.

If the track listing (http://www.descent2.com/goodies/music/d2_tracklist.shtml) is to be believed, Dan Wentz did not do the music for D2, unfortunately, because I liked that stuff too, and would have liked to see it updated.
EDIT: On a bit of guidance, it seems that Wentz did do the MIDI music for D2, just not the redbook/CD-audio tracks.

Not that Dan's stuff isn't excellent, because it is, definitely.

Interesting question... That would probably depend a lot on the story.  Not knowing what it would be, I would probably say it would probably take on a more modern tone, as it's further in the "future". I would probably have to say more "live" voice would be a must too.

Well it seems that the track listing was not all there was. Wentz did do the MIDI music for D2 (http://www.descent2.com/goodies/music/#d2midi), just not the redbook/CD-Audio soundtrack. I've edited my above post. Thanks DW!

Interesting question... That would probably depend a lot on the story.  Not knowing what it would be, I would probably say it would probably take on a more modern tone, as it's further in the "future". I would probably have to say more "live" voice would be a must too.

There was an interview done not too long ago with one of the original FS story developers (I can't recall his name), and he gave us a few clues as to what story ideas were being thrown around for future games, before the plug got pulled.  The most solid of all was the GTVA going on the offensive against the Shivans, including attacking their homeworld, which they referred to as "Shivan Town".  More in >THIS (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=74745.0)< thread.

I did this interview with Mr. Jason Scott, writer of FreeSpace 2. I'm not sure he was involved in FreeSpace 1 (I would hazard he wasn't as the quality of writing is quite, uh, different in FS1.)

"The mystery is often more compelling than the answer."

That sounds so much like him... I really love this quote! Thanks for the link to that interview.  I was with him at those recording sessions in my home town of Chicago and will never forget the experience. For example, only last month I was actually staying across the street from the hotel we were at. Very surreal.

Quick update, one more (battle 3) section and mission 10 redux is officially in the can! Will then take a short break and start on the rest of that list next week. Thanks again for your support and interest; I'm answering questions as soon as I can either on this thread or as PM.

"Shivantown" <- that's hilarious

you're the best battuta, but the answers have a few holes. for one, he says the GTVA have indeed returned to earth but doesn't elaborate on the state of affairs around sol or the political result of the 2nd great war; for all we know blue planet could be canon after all (have not played inferno). also, in my imagination the "shivan town" would look like a borg mother hive since i'm sure it's a fact that shivans can't stand gravity.

so i guess since the focus of a volition made FS3 would focus on exterminating shivans, i suppose the them would be "counterstrike!"

Could we not have in that thread the debate that was already well ended in the original thread ?

:v: only had rough sketches about what FS3 could have been. It is most likely the whole story design would have changed a huge lot between that point and the final product. It is also likely that if :v: was to make FS3 today, they'd throw those outdated sketches away and start from scratch. Despite coming from the lead writer of FS2, this interview isn't canon.

End of story please. We were talking about music here. Bloody awesome music if I may add.

Blue Planet isn't canon, and I'd wager it doesn't look much like canon would've looked because it has a very different narrative style and tone than Volition did.

They apparently started work on a mission pack regarding a return to Sol but it never went much of anywhere. I suspect what's in that interview is most of what they actually came up with.

Mr. Wentz, allow me to be the latest member to welcome you here and congratulate your musical talent.

Like most, I was introduced to FreeSpace 1 at a young age, and the music in particular had a major impact. To my 9-year-old self, FreeSpace seemed like the coolest thing that anybody could have done with a computer. The remixes already posted manage to put me back into that "awestruck" state of mind, and I eagerly await any further releases.

Thank you for making these great memories possible, and we are all honored to have you here.

It's great to see you here, Dan. Thanks for sharing these remixes with us. The Freespace games have always had some of my favorite music.

Like others, my favorite is the FS2 menu one. The original version is definitely recognizable in it, but it has its own "aggressive" twist on that and would work nicely in a cutscene. The instruments in a few others like M10 ambient remind me of the mod-based music from Unreal and Deus Ex, and are quite different from the feel of the stock Freespace music. The FS2 credits one seems to have better instrument separation and positioning, even compared to high quality version of that track we have. The D2 menu music is also interesting and reminds me of some other games of that era.

Would it be possible to recompile some of these using the original instruments? The uncompressed music package you sent Nix with several years ago was much appreciated, but we were missing several tracks from it. I understand that they were from backups that could not be fully recovered. The silent threat M10 music was one of the most sought after tracks among the missing ones.

Well, since everyone is asking, I think I will make a request, too. When you have the time, could you remake the FS2 ending cutscene music? I always loved the music in it. It was ominous - very ominous, suitable for the approach of the Sathanas juggernauts approaching Capella.

It's a pleasure to see you here on HLP, Mr. Wentz, and an even greater pleasure listening to your remixes.  As a fellow musician, I think your re-imaginings of each of these songs are exactly what they should have sounded like back in the 90's.  This is perfect.  I especially love the FS2 credits and the FS1 mainhall music.

My personal request: Revelation from FS2. (This one, to be exact: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=noSZa7glFc4 )

You deserve a medal, good sir, for everything you've done here.

Oddly enough, I don't like the FS2 menu remix. It's too loud, and the drums in the background really detract from the "inbound epic stuff" quality the original had and makes it sound far more aggressive.

Now, the credits remix is excellent. Giving the voice in the background additional echo and reverb really does a lot to add to the track. The way the music stops and starts again adds a little suspense too.

That having been said, welcome to HLP. Hope you stick around and contribute to the project!

Hey, that briefing 4 music remix is pretty good! At first, I was thinking to myself 'What the heck am I listening to?' when presented with low strings and an overall higher energy tune, but I kept listening to the track and I realised it all fits pretty nicely. It's almost like a different theme, more gritty and less mysterious, but with the same overall structure. You seem to be unafraid to expand the originals to capture different moods. Very cool.

The mission G songs are mislabeled, they should be F. My fault, I think, since I mislabeled them in my request post and you probably went by the FS1 mission name originally.

I like what you've done with "G" 2, the softer lead works and I you've done something interesting with the drums that I can't quite describe. The cymbal at 0:12 seems out of place though.
Title: Re: Freespace Music Remixes
Post by: Grizzly on March 14, 2012, 02:09:36 pm
hmm. The second part of Mission G has the ... ehrm... The instrument that comes in just as part 2 in a bit of a background role, at the end, this creates a lot of noise that just tries to compete with eachother, instead of supporting each other. In other words, it sounds a bit like a mess. I do like how that instrument sounds individually, but it gets a bit swamped.

Mission 10 ambience, the different notes change a bit abrupt at the start. If they are seperate notes, I miss the part when the player pauses to take a breadth before blowing again - and if they are connected notes, the transition is not really smooth. It sounds a bit... uncanny.

Also - good to meet you! I love the FS1 Main menu the best at the moment. I did have a personal request: The music of the intro vids (the one with Ash, and the "We form a new alliance, to gaurd the tomb of space" one)

Yes, that was a quick obnoxious Hollywood-style mix. Done in a day like all of these initial passes. As I don't have midi source for any of them, it's all from memory.

I have since cleaned that one up a bit, and readded the timpani/cymbal crescendos as it was in the original. Soon as I get upgraded account I can update the songs without losing plays/comments. I do keep notes of feedback, so when it's time to master them I'll take care of everything I have time for.

Wow! It's great to hear these remixes. They put a fresh spin on the old tracks, and (just like the originals) sound awesome!

I would just like to say, apart from suiting the games very well and being great to listen to on its own, the music in the FreeSpace series has been a huge inspiration to me in my own music composition. I can safely say I wouldn't have put nearly as much investment into electronic/soundtrack music writing if it hadn't of been for the music you wrote. I've been working on a soundtrack for one of the mods here, in fact, and have also attempted a remake of the "March" soundtrack/set in FS1. (If you're interested in hearing any of it, I can PM you a link.)

So all in all... I can't thank you enough for the great music you have composed! I'll definitely be watching for more stuff on Soundcloud :)

Yes, Mission 7/F was what I requested. Interesting departure from the original on battle 3, much spookier than the rather aggressive game themes. Not ambient-spooky though... honestly, if someone told me that it was a Bowser's Castle theme from a Mario game I'd believe them.

Dan Wentz, I have a question: How do you do your reduxes? I'm just curious.  ;)

Hello, if you check the comments under each track I'm starting to fill in with what was used for each - though I haven't filled in some of the recent ones, partly because i forgot to, and partly because there's no sense in repeating most of the same stuff used.  I do not have any MIDI source for any of them, which is one reason why I tend to "invent" parts. That, to me, is part of the fun.

If you have more questions, feel free to drop me a message.

A new track, Freespace2 MainHall Beta is now up which make 19 total (counting my older tracks). Going to take a few days off and will start fresh next week. Have a great weekened all!

Nice new remixes yay! I like the new take on the originals. One thing I do notice is the reduced dynamic range (too much compression) and some abrupt lead ins/outs of certain parts of tracks/instruments. In some ways I think it detracts from the feeling/atmosphere of the music :) Otherwise a nice welcome back from me since I have been away from this site for a while too!

I completely agree. Please keep in mind, these are purely midi-driven files at this stage, not a single audio track bounced/rendered yet and I'm allowing a single day per song so I can get as many in as possible.

Before being delivered to HLP, the plan is to pile them all up then master each, which will probably take a week or two once the songs are all drafted - depending on how many I end up with.

Exodus is on deck.

I like the beginning vocals, in particular the choice of line from the game. It gives the song a context. That line from the intro cutscene always manages to make my spine tingle, a description of how surreal times were for the GTVA during FS2. The song is a little heavy in my opinion with the low brass, but it's a remix.

Is Stacie Hirsch's part a new recording or is it from an older version of the cutscene?

I'd like to know that too. Her voice sort of reminds me of the ancient cutscenes from FS1 without the processing.

I know she voiced a few other lines from what would become the FS2 intro in the original FS2 trailer (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r08pQHjF1X0), so maybe she did these at the same time.

This is amazing! I couldn't say anything that hasn't already been said in this thread...! Amazing stuff sir!

Could we get any modern versions/remixes of Freespace 1's Briefing 4 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=yDrlRq-ZjNk#t=60s) and Briefing 3 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ms7-RopAAw4) ?

I really LOVE the direction you took in those. Briefing 4 really solidified the peril that the GTA and PVN were facing and really felt like the world was coming down around you, the organ type of instrument in the song also added a gothic vibe that was really welcome. And Briefing 3, wow, whenever I hear that I feel like it's the kind of song playing during a montage of pilots suiting up...it's got this "We are Professionals and this is the job we'll be pulling"kind of vibe with a bit of hope and futurism.

Freespace Main Menu Redux at about 2:00 - there is something missing (on purpose I guess). It's this cool engine/screaming/roaring sound in the background that's getting higher until the next part of the music starts. I always thought this is a very important part of the feeling the music created - it sounded very mechanic (therefore cool ;) ).

This is all like a dream come true! It's like the music is alive again... anyone know what I mean? Makes me very happy.

The beginning of B3Exodus Remix is one of my favorite soundbites! Nice way to introduce a surreal track. It has the feel like the universe is coming apart all around the player, as depicted in the final missions of FS2.

I'd like to know what FS2 brief 2 will sound like nowadays. My feel on it is that you are introduced/welcomed to some kind of calm blessed elite.

Freespace is a high time favorite of mine, in all terms. I'd like the military, soberish style of the music. It has it's own identity, but also I feel it's very constraint in terms of size that was allowed in the whole distribution package thing. Which is sad, but realistic. I'd love to see a new extended set of music that departs from and builds on what there is, but that don't have this constraints in quality and time.

It gives me renewed hope for FS3, the sounds from within :v: and the reemergence of Dan. So far as I can see, it's certainly not lost! If only for wrapping the story.

Freespace Main Menu Redux at about 2:00 - there is something missing (on purpose I guess). It's this cool engine/screaming/roaring sound in the background that's getting higher until the next part of the music starts. I always thought this is a very important part of the feeling the music created - it sounded very mechanic (therefore cool ;) ).

http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=cR2zdiAy0dY#t=75s <---- this one

Oh yeah, I'm pretty sure that was generated from an E-Mu E-Synth sampler I sadly no longer own. But I agree, it's a cool part to include. Will keep that in mind and see if I can mix something up. I had a ***** of a time trying to recreate the battle 3 Exodus percussion originally done on the E-Mu Audity 2000... Sometimes, they just don't make em like they used to! But I'm happy with the results.

And as a bonus, that last part of mission 2 is also FS1's briefing 5. :D

(Not sure why, but FS1 liked to use certain soundtracks' NRML3 components as briefing tracks.  It worked though!)
Title: Re: Freespace Music Remixes
Post by: Thaeris on March 21, 2012, 09:21:59 pm
I always felt the NRML3 tracks never fit in with the first two tracks to begin with, as frankly - they rarely did. But then, the play order in FS1 made that not really noticable.

I do think the original M2 N3 track sounded more foreboding due to the additional (not to mention more vocal) percussion and... what would you call it? A synthetic choral voice at the commencement of the track?
Title: Re: Freespace Music Remixes
Post by: Goober5000 on March 21, 2012, 09:33:15 pm
The FS1 music system was different from FS2... you had verses, refrains, and NRML3 -- which was basically a musical bridge between the battle and the normal parts.
Title: Re: Freespace Music Remixes

m2_nrml3 fits pretty well with m2_bttl1,2,which if I may add are two brilliant tracks.

The first two parts of m2_nrml remind me of the training missions, particularly the one where you are introduced to the aspect seeking missile and the communications menu. m2_nrml3 was used for mission 2 where you fight the Vasudans in the asteroid field. It's also used as a briefing track. To me it was like, 'now that we've trained you it's time to send you into the fight'.

Edit: My bad, I just played mission 2 of freespace1. m2_nrml 1 and m2_nrml2 both play when you are not fighting Vasudans, but not m2_nrml3.

M2_nrml3 does play.  But it only plays when transitioning from a mission event (such as a dogfight) back to the nrml1-nrml2 cycle.

Hi Dan.  :)

I'll try not to gush too much here, but I really enjoy your work; the Freespace games are a couple of my all-time favorites, in no small part due to your very memorable soundtrack. It's all excellent work, which makes it very hard to request any specific tracks for remixing. I will admit that I tend to like the FS1 arrangements more, although I may be in the minority here in that respect; FS1's music feels more immediate, aggressive, and action-driven, while FS2 is generally more ambient, orchestral, and laid-back, like it's removed from what the player's doing (although there are certainly some exceptions; FS2 Briefing 4 may very well be my favorite track of the entire series, but I see you've already done that one  :P).

Here are some of my faves; these aren't the only ones, but there are some, like FS1 mainhall, that you've already redone. Forgive me if I don't use proper trackname nomenclature, but I don't have the soundtrack on tap like some of our regs do, so I've been prowling Youtube to jog my memory.

- Good ol' FS1 Briefing 1 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bjHqZo6YFJQ). This one recurs a lot throughout the game, and a slightly different version also plays at the end of Silent Threat, Mission 3 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1brn4JDKBfQ&feature=player_detailpage#t=426s). It's probably the single piece of music that I most strongly associate with the entire game, the sort that you find yourself humming long after you stop listening to it.

- FS1 "Chaser Ambience" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A7F-PsMy-_4). A very atmospheric "space" track that gives you a sense of how empty and awe-inspiring the void is, and the sinister bit at the end makes for a nice bridge to a battle.

- FS1 "Chaser" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u9XLdROXE44). This and the "March" battle theme are a couple of the tunes from the game that I remember best, the kind that really get your blood pumping in a dogfight.

- FS1 "Strike" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IhoNBMrn1hc). This is a fun one, but the reason I remember it so well is probably because it plays non-stop during FS1 Mission 28, when you're chasing down the Lucifer, and seems very fitting.  :P

- FS2 Ending, Part I (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_qiWAgQeAVY). This is a very powerful, eerie piece of music. I'm not a huge fan of vocal pieces, but I like this one, as well as the segue to the more dynamic "supernova" part (which sounds very familiar, but I can't place where else in the game it takes its cues from). I've loaded the cutscene many times simply to hear the music play.

The reason FS1 seems more immersive music-wise is IIRC that its tracks change based on certain mission events.. FS2 does this to a very, very limited extend (basically just gives a few different announcement pieces when enemies or friendlies warp in)... FS1 actually has the capability of cycling through three different "normal" tracks, depending on whether all three were created for it and depending on mission events.

I don't know how they were employed exactly, but FreeSpace 2 music tracks also have three components, in addition to their ambient and friendly/enemy arrival stings.

Strange. I'd read that FS2 played different battle music based on the pace of the action, whereas FS1 just looped through.

Well, I took a listen to the ambient track mix for Worlds Apart, and I must say I like it. My only complaint would be that NRML3's tempo may be a little too fast compared to the original.
Title: Re: Freespace Music Remixes
Post by: Danimal on March 28, 2012, 03:54:06 pm
Thanks, here is the actual tempo map for "Worlds Apart" for those interested. It's the same as original.  This puppy never sits still!

Normal1, Normal2, EARV1, AARV1 = 86 BPM
Normal3 = 120 BPM
EARV2, AARV2 = 140 BPM
Battle1,2,3, Victory1 = 145 BPM
Victory2 = 120 BPM

I'm debating about the instrumentation for the battle tracks, and have come up with an idea to have more world instruments employed - especially in Battle1. So 1 will be more (Mid)Eastern, 2 will be more Western. Still working out the mix, will post it at some point.

Meanwhile, I'm well into Mission 5 now... and it's frickin scary stuff. :)

I think the end bit of the end bit of worlds apart (where the flute thing comes in) could be a bit longer. I thought it was a shame in the original as well, it just seems to cut short at the end. And itś one of the, if not the, most beautifull parts of your entire FS soundtrack.

It's probably a case that Dan still had the original pre-mixdown tracks of the audio, where each instrument is seperated onto a different track on the sequencer. A little bit of filtering and noise reduction, combined with the lack of limitations that were with the original game (22Khz 8-Bit iirc) can do wonders :) Add a couple of new tracks and some fresh mixing on the old ones and out pours the awesome :D

Hold on...what exactly is this? A real performance instead of a midi file or something, which renders the quality far better and more realistic?

Good question. These are complete overhauls from scratch using MIDI triggered software instruments. I'm using 4-5 plugins for each song. I start with the Roland TSS-1 which emulates the original Roland Sound Canvas, so I get the retro percussion (If I want to keep it some cases) but all the instruments are done using a variety of (Eastwest/Native Instruments) plugins that employ either streaming samples or software synths. See attachment.

The keyboard controller I'm using to play each part is the Korg Microkey, and this is all done on a XPS 17 laptop.

One major advantage of doing it this way, no audio-only tracks, is that when I render the collective MIDI to an audio mixdown, I can choose what sample rate bit depth I want. I can also change any instrument, note, controller, etc. while keeping the rest of the mix untouched. For the game renders (what will eventually end up in the game) I'm using 16bit 44k renders, but I could render them as high as 32bit 96k; Although it doesn't make much sense to render at resolutions above those used in the streaming samples.

Kontakt, Absynth and Battery... Heh, my three favourite VSynths alongside Omnisphere and some of the Rob Papen stuff.

Battery, in particular, is probably one of the best synths for Drums I've used, because it's so easy to just drag and drop audio into a note and create your own kits :D

Just a quick question, Dan, was the music for the cutscenes your work, or did someone else handle that?

For some of the key cutscenes in the original Freespace - most notably the intro, boarding the disabled Shivan craft and the ending - those wonderful works were Steven von Kampen, a hired composer/sound designer from Noiz Audio - He wrote the music, did most of the sound design and I provided direction and filled in some spots where needed. I believe he still works at Rock Star Games in Ca. It was a great experience collaborating with him, we had a lot of fun working together and I still keep in touch with him to this day. I then had the opportunity to fly solo on FS2.

Thanks again everyone for the feedback! Mission 6 normals are up. 3 more to go! I leave for a short vacation this week so I'll be taking a bit of a breather to finish up soon.

Thanks, I'll consider extending it a bit - that's a Bassoon. I recall getting requests from the team, back in the day, to try to include some woodwinds, and that track was the result.  Sometimes composers, like me, love string and brass a little too much?

But it serves as a good example why feedback and collaborating ideas is always a good idea. I'm sure its rare appearance is one of the reasons it stands out from the rest.

The trend at the moment tends to be towards the Duduk, mostly bought about by things like BSG and the Sci-Fi Channels' Dune series. Nice to see the more 'traditional' (from a Western perspective) woodwinds being used.

One question though, isn't Mission 6 supposed to be 'Haunted' and Mission 7 'Marauder'? Or do I have my names mixed up?

You are correct, updated track names. Battles are up now. I will be back on Monday to finish up missions 7 - 9, and anything missing from 10. Also, I sent Ian a message today, all tracks for missions 1-6 are completed with the new music table entries, so it shouldn't be too long before this gets in the game.

Eventually, I'll make them all downloadable too.

I have two questions.

You said that you have tabled the music entries, have you included all the stings and the victory tracks for these songs? Have you played any of the usermade campaigns that have been made?

That being said I think Haunted was very well done. I can't wait for Strike!

Yes. So far, including some extras and alternates, there are 71 tracks in the pipeline for the first six missions. Someday I hope to try them, which ones would you recommend?

Well, I would recommend firstly Blue Planet (Pretty much everyone's default around here) and Derelict. If you're willing to try something that's not related to FreeSpace in any way and are okay with an anime style mod, I would also try Wings of Dawn.

Oh! I had another question. About Marauder, since it and some song from FS2 (name escapes my head) have essentially the same battle track, are you going to reuse it for your music table?

Vassago's Dirge (http://www.hard-light.net/wiki/index.php/Vassago%27s_Dirge) uses classical music as a soundtrack which you might find interesting.

The Revelation tracks are my favorites out of all FS2.
Mine, too. I always thought they fit "Love The Treason..." especially beautifully. For me, they just perfectly captured the everything-I-thought-I-knew-about-this-mission-is-wrong feel, especially the three battle tracks.

Ditto for Numbers and "Mystery of the Trinity". The ambient track captures the spookiness of exploring uncharted territory while flying blind, and the enemy arrival track and battle tracks capture the feeling of unseen enemies approaching from out of nowhere.

If you're going to play a campaign I think you should do Vassago's Dirge first - set in a timeline you're familiar with, short, and does loads of interesting things with music.

Blue Planet and Derelict are also good entries.

I think it'd be worth taking a look at Shrouding the Light, as I felt it was a very well-executed campaign. Transcend might also be interesting to take a look at.

Back to the music though - The M6 Normals were great, emphasis on the second part. I felt a huge wave of nostalgia sweep over as I heard that briefing music play, as it played on the first campaign mission of FS1.

Seriously, Mongoose is right. Silent Threat:Reborn (ST:R) is the HLP community's remake of the Silent Threat expansion to Freespace1. It is fully voice acted and a complete production. You would probably be really interested in playing silent threat reborn, especially since you are one of the members of the team who worked on silent threat. Note that it requires Freespace1 port (fsport) to play.

Here's a link to ST:R: http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=59120.0

'Worlds apart' nrml is great, takes me back to the original. You also did a remix for m2_bttl and it's awesome! I like those hushed riffs during the quiet bits. You're making the kid in me very happy. You seem to be doing all the freespace tracks in order. You planning on doing m7_nrml1?  :nervous:

All the campaigns mentioned are great, but I think Vassago's Dirge is utterly unique in its usage of music. The music was an integral part of the campaign.

An electric guitarFS2 menu would be amazing. Don't suppose there's software to generate tabulature for it?

I'll see, the software I use does export notation pretty well. So I suppose it's possible to do tabulature.

And yes, I do plan on using the existing battle reduxes for Marauder. I'll check out those mods too, only one I've tried  before was Behind the Red Line. BSG is one of my favorite series from Sci Fi. So say we all!

Silent Threat: Reborn is the definitive fan-made Freespace campaign. There are plenty of others, but do yourself a favor and play that one first, because it sets the bar damn high.

I completely disagree - it's one of many strong campaigns that are of a quality, but which differ in their areas of excellence. ST:R's strengths lie in its adherence to the style and quality defined by Volition. Other campaigns may impress you in different areas; Vassago's Dirge makes the most creative use of music and has the most sophisticated sense of visual style. Yet other campaigns excel through technical feats - enhanced AI that dwarfs the original, or tricks of mission design that were never possible in Volition's time. Some depart considerably in narrative style (Derelict, for instance).  There's no single best campaign and nothing anywhere near definitive.

If there's one truly astounding strength to the FreeSpace community it's the diversity of campaigns that have been produced. Mind-bending RTS campaigns, capital ship command, dialogue trees - we've done it all.

Make up your own mind about what interests you.

OK, I've been busy this week, Marauder is basically *done and with it we have 93 total music sections rendered and ready to be put into the game. I'm started on Monolith and the normals are up.

Hello,
All Ancient music has been redone as of today - some contain slightly extended versions as they were originally composed.

The plan for the finals (submitted to HLP with the redone high res cinematics) will be to have Clarissa, who is the original voice actress, redo all the voice overs.  I know she's anxious to do so! I'll condense the extended scores as needed.

I have noticed, a few days back you made a remix for marauder NRML. You may recall I mentioned that I have been for a long time imagining how this track would sound as a remix. Marauder NRML to me is a track which communicates purity, heart, and dedication; particularly of the Terrans who are facing a menace of unknown scale. I imagined high strung violins seamlessly edging in and out over the base, and for some sort of buildup to occur, possibly involving light percussion. I interpreted this buildup perhaps as military strength or level of investment into the conflict.

At the first listen through, I was confused by the direction of the remix. The main base of the remix uses a low base horn which sounds like something out of a swamp pit. An added quality which I initially thought dragged the track down. I listened to this track many times to wash out of my mind the bias I had for how I thought the track should sound. I have since grown an appreciation for the new direction.

Here's my take on it: the terrans are hurting, and there's hardly any reason to feel anything but hopelessness, yet they fight on to survive. In this particular mission(M7), the player is expected to deliver shield technology which will be developed by scientists and give terran/vasudan fighters more or less even footing against shivan fighters; a single ray of hope in this desperate struggle. So the track begins as a people wading through carnage in search of hope, and as the track builds, the hope slowly overcomes the carnage. Perhaps survival of the human race is possible after all?

I might be reading too hard into the track, but I really appreciate you making this remix and settling my questions about how the original artist would have altered the original. It adds to one of my favorite tracks of all time, one which stirs me in unique ways. I very much appreciate what you are doing for HLP and readily listen to every track as they come out.

Looks like the Marauder normals are up. Marauder is actually my favorite track in FS1.

I could not agree more.

Regarding Marauder, instrumentation, my intent...

I appreciate your thoughtful interpretation. A bit of what I was thinking; first that's actually a (slightly distorted) 5 string Spector bass guitar - which makes a rare solo appearance in this rendition. I felt it was time to give some "other instruments" the spot light. To me, it drips of ominous darkness.

This is intended to contribute to the transitioning of the classic "calm before storm" effect from 8 to 9. So, I also subdued 8 a bit to make the impact of 9 that much larger.

Thank you everyone. I just want you to know how much I love this game and the fact that you all have supported it for so long. Yeah, I'm sure mission designers do know what they're doing here and admittedly I was speaking with a touch of sarcasm.  The order of tracks in the music table doesn't necessarily directly translate to the actual mission progression.  I'll thinking of renaming the soundcloud entries to remove the "mission x" designation, and just call them by title.

And now if I may, I have a question that's been "bugging me" ever since I 1st finished the game - the choir, what words are they singing?  Is it "Agnes Dei, Why? Why? Why?"

And on a slight tangent, I love the way that the credits music (which is theme & variations on the intro music?) and this track both have the words Agnes Dei in it, to me it links the beginning and the end of FS2 together in a way that I can't quite explain but that I've always loved (maybe it's representing new hope that turns to confusion as the GTVA realises just how much they don't understand the Shivans?) -  thank you so much for such a wonderful soundtrack!

Thank you guys; it's one of my personal favorites too. I'm glad you asked me that...

I could say - Lamb of God, they were being sacrificed, etc... But the simple answer is I used that because it (the voices, mood, cadences) fit and more importantly sounded cool (to me anyways).  Sometimes the most innocent things become extremely evil when given the right context, and I really wanted to explore that phenomenon a lot in this game.

I do have a story to share about that score...

I came in on a weekend to finish that particular cutscene and I remember it very well.  While I was in the middle of working on the opening, Mike Kulas stopped what he was doing and came by my office only to give me a grin of approval, and prop my door wide open... I presume so he and (I believe Philip Holt) could hear me better, my guess is they were in the gameroom which was just down the hall from me at the time.  That *sign of approval* actually got me even more inspired. Because, right after that, I worked out the climax.

I have been following your progress on this regularly. I love the Ancients tracks in particular, and FS1 mission 8 has been another sought-after set that is missing from our music archive. However, Ancients 1 and 5 sound very different from the ones that actually appear in the cutscenes. They're very good, but don't seem to have been used in the game.

The FS2 ending track is a wonderful piece of music, but the remix sounds identical to the original to me. Am I missing something?

Regarding the ending remaster; there are some subtle differences, for one, the strings are deeper and more vibrant which you should notice if you compare the two tracks. But I didn't want to change a single note.

Speaking of ancients, the new mixes with voice are up on my YT page. Clarissa did an excellent job!

Hey guys,

Sorry for the late response.  Work has been very busy with E3 and all, I haven't had time to listen to Darius' track or even play Alien Swarm...  Not that I know what that is. :)

About the remix status, that should be it for this installment.  Thanks to everyone for their requests and feedback.  While I didn't get to them all, I had to prioritize given the time allowed and I was able to complete all of the original Freespace tracks before I moved back to Chicago - so it's just a matter of time before they find their way into the main game build. There are a total of 109 new tracks for Freespace alone.

I'm also planning to distribute all the tracks on soundcloud some day soon, but have yet to come up with a plan for how to go about it.  I'll ping this newsgroup if and when I get to that.

Thanks again to everyone!  Feel free to contact me if you have any questions about getting this stuff working.

Hey,

The FS2 tracks were, for the most part, not touched on. I had limited time to work with when this went down and I wanted to focus on the tracks that needed the most love, namely every single track from FS1.
It's all been added to the build, in fact I balanced and remastered all 140+ earlier this year.

Someday, I'll get back on this remix kick, although I've started working on Red Faction most recently. Thanks for all the kind words and support everybody. It's a blast to be able to do this stuff (again)

So I am looking for the briefing themes on the soundcloud, I see remixes for the first two, and one of the briefings used one of the ancient themes (Ancients 3 was used as the last briefing theme if I am not mistaken), but I could have swore there were 5 different briefing themes used, so what are the other two?

Oh wow thanks Dan.  I guess I must have missed a briefing theme in my head.  I also hadn't noticed ancients 3 was also used in mission (spend more time listening to the battle themes), though I did pick up on mission 2's music being used.

By the way, I love the pieces you did for the Silent Threat Reborn ending.

Edit: interestingly, I have discovered that Briefing 1 is more or less, a variant of m6-nrml2

Thank you, I very much enjoyed the opportunity to work on fresh material for Silent Threat Reborn. These guys are doing some amazing work and it served to be very inspirational. That ending score came together in about 3 hours!

Hello again,

I'm not finished yet. As I wait to release all of the afore mentioned Freespace 1 remaster tracks - Here is a taste of something I've been working on in the same flavor.

It sounds like a "brink of doomsday" kind of briefing track, like this is the last shot before the Shivans knock down the front door. Kind of like how Cinema2 was more frantic, but still a sort of "we're at the cusp".

Definitely.

That midi instrument at the start, I can imagine it with a string synth sounding even more ominous.

Hell yeah!

On another note, Mr Wentz, would you be ok with your music being used as part of a mod? Bit of a silly question, I know, but want your input first before anything else. Do hit me up if anything! :)

Are these going to be used in the official Freespace 2 SCP? And any chance of remastering with live instruments

Probably not. They're not really set up to be used as music in the game. They're continuous tracks with no spacing between phrases like there were for the originals. It wouldn't sound as good. He's also selling these tracks, so it would probably be in bad form to put these in-game, even if he is doing this because he likes the community and his old work. It would be the same as piracy.

Real instruments? Are you kidding? The answer is no in that regard as well, but this is probably the closest Dan can get to real instruments through a DAW.

I do wonder if a FreeSpace 2 remaster in the same vein is planned, though.

 wat?? :wtf:

Most of them already are. Aside from the newer version of "Phantoms" and the new FS1 end cutscene music, these are the same tracks that have been featured on Dan's soundcloud and in the MVPs.

...uh, no? :wtf: The ones on Soundcloud are the old remastered tracks. He released new ones that you buy on Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon... His Hear Now link directs you to the new tracks. :V

Re-read my post, most of the tracks that you buy on Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon... (and his YouTube!) are the same as the old remastered tracks on Soundcloud.

I know this because I listened to all of them.

"Liberation" and "Phantoms" are the only ones that are different.
