Re: What are you playing right now?
What am I playing?

Not Final Fantasy XIV. Since the early access to the new patch launched ahead of the official release, my "world" - which is on the lower side of population - is full with upwards of 200+ players in queue.

So World of Warships and Skyrim.

Might start something new; any good suggestions for something that wouldn't take too long to finish?

Re: What are you playing right now?
I highly recommend Brigador if you like cyberpunk and mechs. The campaign is short enough if you don't play all the loadouts for each mission but it has insane amounts of replayability if you enjoy the systems enough.

Heroes of the Storm again, so nothing sophisticated. Now it's just a good brainwasher that I need to reset my mind during breaks from work. What I mostly do is loosing matches, and slaying tons of noobs with stealth killers. Enjoyed it once, but now I have no team to play with.

I've been playing it again since some friends have been. It's a mess of a game but fun with friends when you can ***** about it. My Battlenet (yeah it's still that to me) is Firesteel #1931.

Re: What are you playing right now?
Also the robots with seeker missiles, the main reason I switched sourceport is that with the new version the missiles now always behave like the game is running at 30fps, I got to Io with undodgeable missiles and lots of save scumming.
Oh jeez, yeah, the Heavy Hulks were just about unbeatable with the old D1X's uncapped framerate.  Ah, the days when devs assumed you'd never have anything more powerful than a P 166.

(Confession: I've actually never beaten the original game legitimately.  :nervous:)

I've never beaten the game, period.
I've always had the PCgamer CD rom with the complete version but it took me years (more than a decade) just to beat that invisible giant Hulk boss, I played up to that point and then gave up countless times.
Until not long ago I thought it was best played with mouse and keyboard or even better keyboard only.
The weird thing is that I don't remember why I stopped using a joystick at a certain point many years ago, I have only vague recollections of using one with this game and in my clearer memories I used either a mouse, the arrow keys or the numpad for aiming/turning.
The only issue I have with the HOTAS is that since the throttle has no center detent I have to pay a bit of attention to stop moving instead of slightly going forwards or backwards, but strafe controls are much more intuitive to use with analog ministick and throttle than with a keyboard.

EDIT

Unrelated question: the Metroid Prime games for Gamecube end on a cliffhanger and need the third one to finish the story or are more or less self-contained?

They're largely self-contained, though in 3 you do finally finish finish with some plot threads started in 1, like the Space Pirates' prime metroids and

Dark Samus and its thing

Re: What are you playing right now?
I tried the Descent 3 demo, fortunately I had nGlide installed because of Rogue Squadron 3D because openGL and Direct3D made the game crash.
Also it seems that I can't use the analog stick extra axis (can only use one as rudder for roll) and after creating a merged profile I had to use the POV on the throttle for strafing, it works but it's not as fluid.
Though sincerely it's more likely I'll get 2 once I finish with the first, I truly regret having missed the GOG versions.

Good to know, the pal versions seem fairly cheap for such acclaimed games (no doubt because of the Wii ports) and even if I wanted to "borrow" my brother's wii, it needs a new sensor bar and even then I'm not sure if the controllers have problems too so it would be potentially a bit of a hassle to get it to work.

Re: What are you playing right now?
Since Naval Battles for War Thunder still seem quite far away, I decided to get my fix of Ship-to-ship battles from World of Warships, and holy merry mother of fruitbaskets is it fun!
I went for IJN, since they have the most ships and back in WW2 they were considered to be one of the best, in contrast to their horrible airforce and their even worse tanks.
As of now, I mostly played BBs (Battleships) and Carriers. I also developed a phobia for torpedo bombers and destroyers.
My only gripe about the game at the moment is Wargaming's classic limited Hangar space and the fact that it is a bit grindy at times.

Beating that boss was a huge achievement back then. I was the first one in my circle of 4th grade friends to manage it, and got instant respect for it. :D The key is to get a nearby invulnerability and use it to kill all the other bots in the room. The boss is not that tough on his own, but it's very difficult to fight him with everything else in there.

For Descent 3, the D3D mode works well with dgVoodoo. It's the only mode that supports 32-bit color and bump mapping.

Crap, I completely forgot about DGvoodoo.
Also reading the readme there seems to be an alternate way for the game to read joysticks, I'll try that to see if it allows to get the analog stick on the throttle working.

EDIT

Nope, same error I got when I tried straight D3D, also it seems the alternate joystick mode isn't present in the demo.
Oh, well, it's just the demo and I have yet to finish the first two before thinking of tackling 3.

Re: What are you playing right now?
So it seems that the throttle can be made to work with early wing commander games after all.
After consulting with the CH Hangar forum I managed to write a simple script for a relative throttle with a center deadzone,
though it seems I'll have to create a separate profile for Privateer now, since many of the controls were the same and I could use only the joystick I ended up using the same map as Wing Commander for it but the greater number of MFDs, target functions, the map,  etc perhaps warrants different mapping profiles.

I was thinking about starting playing WoWs's for a while but instead I'll patiently wait. After many sh**storms and severe bashing from the players, The Big Snail changed it's mind and started adding bigger vessels. http://warthunder.com/en/news/4807-development-fletcher-class-destroyer-en

The fact that you only have 1 save slot is super ****ty and nothing justifies that.
So I had a power outage and it corrupted my DDDA save. Damn Crapcom dinosaur.

Re: What are you playing right now?
Just finished Descent for the first time after I got the game from PC gamer almost twenty years ago.

Still hungry for more I tried the Overload demo and had some jolly good fun, I could map the HOTAS in the exact same way I used in Descent via DXX-Rebirth, it's good enough it might be the second early acces I might buy.
A pity I didn't know about it before, I stumbled upon this by chance while looking for Descent 3 reviews/let's play/retrospectives on youtube together with various stuff about Descent: Underground, though people seem to prefer Overload, can't judge since there is no free demo of D:U.

Re: What are you playing right now?
So I am playing Dragon's Dogma third time around now. First finished, second save corrupt and now third with a wiki, which I recommend to anyone [you can miss everything but the main quest].
For an action game, it's absolutely fantastic. Not perfect, but fantastic.
The combat system is very much like the one in Shadow of the Colossus, in that you can climb monsters to take advantage of their weakspots. You can climb a cyclops, reach its head and have it remove its massive helmet off it when it tries to grab you. You can cut off hydra's heads and set it on fire so it doesn't regrow them. You can grab onto a griffin when it tries to fly away, hack at its wings and have you both slam into the ground. Or you can just summon a tornado to tear anything and everything apart, launching lesser foes high into the air.
Controllable difficulty, most annoying features can be turned off, 9 classes that play differently, fun, fun, fun, fun, fun, fun. All unfun can be entirely ignored, except one escort mission.
And everything I've seen or heard about it before I played it seemed boring.
Oh guys, use that [ url ][ img ][ /img ][ /url ] :/
