Re: W-H-I-Y-L - boom shake-shake shake the-room.
Random question for people who use the metric system of measurement:

When you estimate a person's height, especially at a distance, do you say "about 170 cm" or "1 2/3 meters" or something else entirely? Do you use imperial measures for estimating height?

What about structures? "That wall looks almost 3 meters high" or "must be almost 300 cm" or *other*?

Metric system user here.

When it comes to a person's height, we either measure in centimetres (170 cm) or metres (1.7 m). Measurement in centimetres seems more common in a formal setting (i.e. height measurements in school or in the Armed Forces), while measurement in metres appears to be more common during idle talk.

Structures are usually measured in metres in most settings. However, having seen some floor plans during my course of work and requesting mundane things like name plates for doors, it seems that measurement in millimetres is also used quite heavily in building design. Interestingly, decimals don't appear to be used very often, if at all.

At least we can all agree that no one has ever willingly used decameters outside of a math problem.

In my country, Italy, we use whatever form is the most convenient for a specific context. Uno e settanta (one and seventy, 1-70) is way easier to pronounce than centosettanta (one hundred seventy, 170); it also sounds more informal and friendly. When it comes to heights, we use the number of meters (1 or 2) followed by the number of centimeters. For example, when somebody asks me that question, I answer uno e ottanta (one and eighty, 1.8m).

Re: W-H-I-Y-L - boom shake-shake shake the-room.
Well, the past 4 weeks have certainly been interesting, between :
- a major network incident at work that basically shot my evenings & first extended week-end due to everything needing to be triple checked
- followed by a medium-sized incident blowing out of proportion due to one guy acting like a jerk the following Friday, shooting my second extended week-end
- getting bounced around due to conflicting priorities from the client's guys
- having a sudden swarm of minor incidents to deal with due to the client putting us in charge of their second incident tracker (and having done jack-**** to deal with said incidents)
- social drama + having to scramble to do (well, attempt to anyway) all the **** I was supposed to do during the two extended week-ends in a single Saturday
- having to scramble last week (& this week) to catch up on all the dev we were supposed to do the 3 weeks prior but couldn't due to all the incidents we've had to deal with

... I'm feeling a tiny bit exhausted. The sad thing is that June is "deadline-month", so it's not gonna be much better. On the good side, the weather's getting better, me & my game buddies have basically solved Age of Empire 3 (vs CPU), I'm finally getting the hang on Alpha Centauri and last election turned out a lot better than expected, so that helps preserving my sanity ^^.

Next steps : do my taxes in time, get a new pair of glasses, call my bank, and see if I can sort out my car problems.

I'm not the most intelligent person on earth by any stretch of the imagination and I don't pretend to be. However, when you see a person do something so obviously stupid that you know the outcome and it happens as predicted, you do wonder about people in general.

Isn't that right.

I was walking back from my office last night when I walked past a lady who was asking someone on her cellphone for directions on crossing a road with heavy traffic and no road crossing. She either somehow missed the two overhead bridges nearby or was just too lazy to use them.

It's been a long weekend. I return with kid #3. 1 girl and 2 boys now... wish me luck.

All the best with your little hellions.

Hmm two days, two large leaks to fix, I still have a weak left on call. Gonna be a good check this week.

In other news I enter the last year of my youth this week. What is up with that.

In other other news I just caught another half dollar sized wolf spider in the house. Well at least it isn't scorpions.

When I was seven, thirty was old.

But now, as I am just about to turn 29 I realize, yep I was smart for seven. Thirty is still old.

Supposed to be in the "literally nothing is happening" brief break at work.  Still worked 10 hours today. :banghead:

I see it as my youth ended about 2 years after I started my job.  It soft ended when I graduated uni, and pretty much took a step decline every year after freshman year.

To reinforce this notion, I did something active for the first time in quite a while today.  Skinned my knee, ripped my pants wide open, and now my back hurts.
