Title: [Release] Freespace: The Great War - Augmented - Chapter 1
Post by: Trivial Psychic on July 01, 2017, 06:06:39 pm
Well, my first attempt to release this was more of a whisper, and I believe ended up corrupted.  So here is Release 1.1.
Now updated to Release 1.2 to fix campaign bug
New Vasudan cruiser.
New Terran corvette.
More warship battles.
New loop missions.
New bonus Objectives.

All mission changes peformed by The Trivial Psychic (me), with the exception of the replacement of Mission 1, which swaps out the standard mission for the Redux version included in the Port... plus a few FRED changes on top of that.  You will find a 3-mission loop which splits off just after mission 7

Although it might be playable on an earlier build, I've been using the latest Nightlies to create this, so that or 3.8 (when it comes out) are recommended.

You will need both the FS2 2014 Media VPs as well as the Freespace Conversion Port v3.5 and its 2014 Media VPs.

New Models:

Please note, most of the new models included are not used in Chapter 1, and are intended for use in later chapters, though some may get cut in the end.

GTF Antaeus - Model by Woomeister, extracted from Inferno Alliance along with maps
GTF Kelpie - Model by Taristin
GTF Losna - Model by Taristin
GTF Losna Heavy - Model by Droid803 (For Dimensional Eclipse)
PVF Nhu - Model by Oddgrim
GTB Apollyon - Model by Woomeister, extracted from Inferno Alliance along with maps
GTGs Titan (Assault and Recon models) - Models By Black Wolf
GTFg Jupiter - Model by Black Wolf
GTCa Safittarius - Original Model by Ryx, Hi-Poly upgrade by Taristin and Nyctaeus (in Ch1)
GTCv Morana - Model by c914 (in Ch1)
GTD Henderson - Model by aldo and FSF (in Ch1)
PVC Seker (Aten Mk2) - Model by TrashMan (in Ch1)
PVC Neith - Model by Blowfish and Black Wolf
PVD Atum - Original design by Galemp, Hi-Poly redux by Nyctaeus for Woolie Wool

New Commheads by Black Wolf.  Got them from his pack, though there were some more I've included which didn't indicate who made them, but I'm assuming they're his as well.

Freespace: The Great War - Augmented - Chapter 1 Release 1.2 (http://sectorgame.com/fsfiles/uploads/Projects%20-%20Campaigns%20-%20TCs/Campaigns/FreeSpace%20Port/FSP-TGW-Augmented-CH1-R1.2.rar)

As always, feedback and criticism (constructive please) are welcome.

[Edit] Updates for model credits, as per Nyctaeus.
[Edit2] Switched to R1.2 to fix campaign file bug.

Definitly gonna play this when I get some free time. I love everything connected to FS1. Congratulations!

As for Credits:
- Sagittarius: Ryx made original model and Taristin made hi-poly improvement. Revision you used [conversion, turrets, pof data etc.] is my work.
- Atum: Galemp made original Saviour [Atum]. I made HTL model, requested by Woolie.

Looks badass , an alternate universe of FS1 ;), hope the outcome of the entire campaign is like the same as the original Freespace :v-old:

Its not an alternate universe or anything, its just "Augmented".  In fact, some missions you might not notice any changes at all... M6 and M7 for example.  Most of the changes to these missions are perhaps the addition of a mission directive, some visual face-lifts, and bonus objectives.  I've included a text document that itemizes all of the changes I've made.

Okay! Sounds to me, in my opinion, like the Great War, Retold.

Strange... The campaign finishes at the 3rd mission, it does not seem to proceed any further...

DAMMIT!  That the second time that's happened!  The weird thing is, I just opened the campaign file up in text editor and saw that it indeed ended just after the 3rd mission.  Then I opened up FRED and loaded it there, and it showed the entire 1st chapter along with my loop.  I then re-saved the campaign file and rechecked it in text editor and it was all back.  It's as if FRED remembered the info, but didn't save it in the campaign file previously.

Put this campaign file in your missions subfolder and try it out now.

Looking forward to 2nd & 3rd chapters...

That's a relief.  I guess I'll have to rebuild the mission VP and upload R1.2 then.

New rar uploaded as R1.2.

Why are you using 3.7.2?  That's like a REALLY old build.  It is recommended that you use a new nightly or the 3.8.0 RC2 build.  There have been some recent changes to the jettison-cargo sexp.

Well, the full FS1 original campaign is 3 chapters, 9 to 10 missions each.  I've added the 3-mission loop for chapter 1.  Chapter 2 will have a 5-mission loop.  I haven't decided how long the chapter 3 loop will be however.

Minor issue I encountered:

On the first loop mission (targeting Shivan ships and cargo), the successful debriefing music is FS2's successful debriefing music.

I was playing on 3.8 RC2.

[Facepalm]
OK.  Learning experience.  I just have to remember to manually set the debriefing music.  You can expect this (until I update the release again) to come up with all of the loop missions.  I hadn't touched the debriefing music.  Lesson learned.  Thanks.

I'm using 3.8.0 RC2, and I am experiencing the following error on startup.  I was receiving the jettison cargo error on 3.7.4, so I tried 3.7.5 and the RC2.  Getting the following error:

So change it to normal fso debug is for modmakers

What wouter is trying to tell you is this: Please post your fs2_open.log file.  Instructions on how to do this can be found in this post.

This mod shouldn't cause parsing errors; that it suddenly does is worrying.

On normal build works fine you are useing debug mode
So change it to normal fso debug is for modmakers

No, wouter, Debug builds are for everyone who experiences issues playing a mod.

My guess is there is an error with your FSPort copy, as I don't have that modular table file in my mod.

The log file should be attached to my first post.

Interesting... So do you think the FSPort could be corrupted? I did a full fresh install of everything last week, and the installer was acting a bit wonky.

oooh, I see what's happening here.

In FSO 3.8, we changed a couple of things. Among them is the way the commandline is parsed: As a result, the old launcher you're currently using (whether it's the 5.5g Launcher or an older version of wxLauncher) will not be able to start the exe correctly. Please use this wxLauncher build instead (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=89162)

Well, I installed that new launcher version, and everything opened up okay this time.

However, as soon as I enter gameplay, the screen just keeps rotating in a barrel roll and I can't stop it.  I tried recalibrating the joystick and all that, but it didn't help.

Not sure how the launcher would change that, but I am guessing the "Better joystick support" isn't actually better.

Actually SDL switch the Roll with the Speed Axis. RX is for speed now and Z for rolling. This happens in some other games as well, even i was never sure if this is more a bug than a feature.

Until now Z was always for the Speed.

Go into the game options and reconfigure your axis there.

Thanks, that worked!

I always thought it was a bit odd how it was configured before, but it worked so I didn't question it.  This makes more sense.

Much appreciated.

BTW, I appreciated the 'readme' file you sent along with the campaign.  I don't think I would have been able to find most of the new bonus objectives without it.
Could you include one of those again when you release chapter 2 please?

The problem is on your end, and you need to fix it. As Trivial Psychic pointed out in the first post of this thread:
Although it might be playable on an earlier build, I've been using the latest Nightlies to create this, so that or 3.8 (when it comes out) are recommended.

This release is not compatible with 3.7.4 and requires a 3.8 RC build.

I couldn't think of a way to make Paving the Way any harder.  By that point the Vasudans had proposed a cease-fire, and you don't get brownie points with your perspective ally by attacking one of their capital ships.  By this point, the Hammer of Light hadn't been formed, and adding too many more Shivans would have diminished their impact later.  I just added the ghost signal asteroids and the the new bonus objectives.

You have to target each object and hold that for 2 seconds.  The most difficult part is targeting the cargo as they are so close together and you can't get close to distinguish easily.  My method is to use either the "n" (newest arrival) or "u" (next unscanned).  The tricky part is once you've held it for the required 2 seconds, it starts back at the beginning of the queue so you need to cycle through the ones you've already targeted.  The useful thing to remember is the long time it takes for the freighters to arrive and deposit the cargo gives you ample time cycle through the cargo.  You can even start targeting as soon as they arrive.

You gotta read the message.  It says that they are beneath the Mystic's aft quarter.  Go to the back of the Mystic, point down and head off.

Well, I played through it. Liked the changes, for the most part. Eve of Destruction was a lot more intense.

I approve of what you did with Field of Battle. It never made any sense that there were just four wings of fighters sitting around in an asteroid field with no support and nothing to do.

Was it Small Deadly Space or Avenging Angels that had the big new cruiser fight? That worked pretty well. I'm not super sold on having corvettes in FS1; given the Morana's size, I think you could get away with calling it a heavy cruiser.

Loop missions were good, if a bit difficult. The one with the nebula in particular gave me a bit of trouble; I'd recommend maybe giving the player a hotkey to highlight the patrolling wings. The first one, though, where you're basically just observing the Shivans the whole time, was fantastic, with the only caveat being that it was a pain to keep track of all the cargo containers I needed to scan. The third was good too -- hard, but in the standard "you might need to play it a couple times to get the hang of it" way.

I think that's about it...

Thank you for your feedback.  BTW, the changes to Eve of Destruction are not mine (except from a technical point of view).  I just copied the Extended Edition version and adapted it into the campaign.

I've always preferred the FS1 campaign over FS2 (surely a nostalgia hit?), so I'd like to thank you for trying to bring some new stuff to the missions ;)

Having a Rasputin actually trying to escape looks interesting!

Keeping a close look on this project

How is Chapter 2 coming along?

I'm up to "Enter the Dragon", though I encountered some setbacks with the loop I was working on.  My new job doesn't give me a lot of time to FRED anymore.  I still get 2 days off a week, but I used to have some day-to-day time after work.  That and the fact that new TV seasons have started up and I have to watch what we record or it'll fill up.

To sum it up, I'm still working on it, but I wouldn't expect anything before the end of the year.

Thanks for the attention though.

Any news on this? This looks very promising. I like the changes you proposed overall.

Thanks for the attention.  I've completed general work on all of the chapter 2... not to say that everything is 100% done, it was just done to the point where I felt I could move on to the next mission.  The problem came down to my loop missions.  There's gonna be 5 missions to the loop (though the first pair are linked), and I was close to finishing number 4 but ran into some event problems that were giving me a headache.  Combine that with some events in RL that took my attention, and it has kinda fallen by the wayside.  More recently I've been replaying the upgraded Inferno R1, and in the process doing some model and effect upgrading to my own copy, but I've been frustrated recently by intermittent FSO issues.  I just started a week's vacation so my intent is to do some serious troubleshooting with FSO and the SCP team so perhaps they can nail down what exactly is happening.  I may return to FS1:Augmented after that.  I've got another couple of weeks off in August, so perhaps I can get some more progress done soon.  That said, unless I can get some SERIOUS time to FRED in, don't expect any release before the end of the year.
