We will very definitely not implement anything that is so strongly married to a single platform.

Re: Ingame UI for commandline settings discussion
How about the Settings flyout in Windows 10? m!m, I guess that this makes extensive use of SDL_GetPrefPath.
That has a lot of reasons why we can't use it:
  • It's not in the native UI of the game thus it is not suited for an ingame UI
  • It's a Windows only option, there is nothing comparable on Linux (I'm not sure about Mac)
  • Please take a look at what SDL_GetPrefPath actually does. It has nothing to do with the user interface

That said, I wouldn't be so hasty.  If someone wanted to add something that improved UX on a particular platform without interfering with anything on other platforms, I don't see a reason we wouldn't want to implement that.

Re: Ingame UI for commandline settings discussion
Sure. But something like an improved Ingame settings menu is not the right place for this. That's something that should be the same for all platforms, I believe.

Basically, if it's something that can be hidden from the user, some backend code or something, I don't have many problems with it. But the UX should be as close as possible wherever the game is run.

I think a backend code should do it, but where do I begin?

If you haven't done so already, check out a copy of FSO.

From there, it's up to you as to where you want to go. I'd recommend outlining the basic goals of what you want to do and then just dive into the codebase.
