Author Topic: Raptor VS Raider.  (Read 6542 times)

When I viewed Daybreak Part 2 again, I noticed that the Raptors had things attached to their noses that looked suspeciously like gun-pods.

And if they didn't have gunpods, it would make sense that they should at least be able to attach gunpods, as they seem to have a combined AWACS / Helicopter role in the BSG universe.

That leads to the question: Could an Raptor take down an Raider (and can we try in Diaspora)?

I would have thought the missile pods, underslung guns, and general ass-kickery of their ECM suite would do the job nicely against not just a single raider, but a full squadron.

There are two variants of the raptor - the standard unarmed recon one, and the combat raptor, with the guns and missile pods attached.

There's a reason why we have the developer blog info up - it's basically an extensive faq.

Yeah they would mince up a full squadron of raiders.

Sure they got the firepower to do that, but they're also not as maneuverable as a raider or a viper, while being a bigger target. I for one wouldn't like to go against a full squadron of raiders in that thing. It's a bit like saying an A-10 has the firepower to take out a whole squadron of MiG-29s. Yeah, sure it does, but the problem with that is that the MiGs aren't just going to sit still while the warthog rips them to shreds - and they're far more maneuverable and better equipped for air to air combat. Same thing with the raiders, they were built as excellent dogfighters, while the raptor was built as a recon/assault craft.

A Combat Raptor can pack a real punch against a static target / cap ship.
Spoiler:
As anyone who's seen the finale will know, a Combat Raptor with the right ordnance can really frak up someone's day.

The armed raptors have:

Shoulder-mounted missile pods (12 missiles per pod).

4 underwing hardpoints for either a rack of 4 missiles or one rocket pod with 19 rockets each

2 six-barrelled, belt fed Gatling-style guns on the edges of the wing with ammunition drums tucked just underneath.

Whatever they put on the nose resembles a targeting system or EW device.

Series of images here. I'm not sure how official they are (landing gear seems a bit dodgy), but it seems in-line with screencaps.

Seeing them armed like that, they resemble even more the craft they were based upon.

Actually, the different landing gear solves the problem of how they actually sit on the deck since the underslung weapons go below the level of the regular landing pads by putting the raptor higher up.

Also, it seems that the attachments are mix-and-match. In some scenes, raptors have some of the extra weapons, but not all of them. I'd find a screencap to support that, but don't have time at the moment.

I had assumed that there was only one type of Raptor, but that they could be fitted with an assortment of weapons, tanking equipment (refererenced in You Can't Go Home Again) or perhaps extra sensors.  I've never looked that closely - are they definitely diffferent birds?

well you know what will be great?

Having a 'realistic' mode where one raptor against another raptor really means just that.

Not one raptor pwning 100 raptors that come in wings of 4-8s.
In other words, one missle fired by you deals the same damage as a missle fired by an enemy and the amount of punishment you can receive is similar to the amount of pounding a ship of the same class the enemy has.

You: OK COMMAND, I'm engaging the cylon basestar!!

CMD: Picking up several raiders launching!!

You: No worries!! I'll just blast them all with one all powerful guided missle!!!

*boom* *BANG!!!* 50 cylon equavalents of the similar missle slam into your hull. You don't even bother to evade.
*tick tick tick* the cylon ships get pwned by their own missle blast radius :D

We call this mode 'playing on Insane difficulty.' You can do it in the BtRL demo, but...man, good luck.

True that :)

if this game was absolutely realistic than it would be more about not getting shot instead of killing as many frakking toasters as you can. while realism would be good in small engagements any large battles with 10+ ships on each side would end in everyone getting shot up in the first 5 seconds.

Seriously. Go try the Raider Gauntlet on Insane.

It's all about the not getting shot.
