I can pretty much guarantee our Honda Odyssey does not have this feature.  Heh.

I hadn't thought of that, but maybe I wouldn't mind if my Caravan sounded to me like it had a Hemi!
Maybe someday God will give you a little pink toaster of your own.

I now NEED to get this for my car  Would prefer real engine noise, but hey, better than nothing!

Electric?

No, just degradingly quiet economy car.

Who is jumping into traffic based only on the fact they don't hear car engines?  I don't believe it's necessary or reasonable to intentionally create more noise pollution for the handful of dip****s who think "I don't HEAR any cars, it must be safe to mosey about in the road."

Industrial environments are a whole different game.  People and machines HAVE to be in the same area, and those people are at work paying attention to the OTHER things that can kill them, relying on the machinery drivers to pay attention to what THEY are doing so as not to kill anyone.  And there's the massive speed difference.

Try living in China for a while and you'd soon change that opinion. I don't know many people here who haven't almost been run over by a e-bike at some time or other. Hell, many people have actually been clipped by one. I often simply refer to them as silent assassins cause you never have any idea that one of them is coming up behind you.

So yeah, no one is going to walk out into traffic without looking every time, but it only takes one moment of carelessness to get hit and having a sound is often the clue that saves you when you aren't paying due attention.

I disagree. In theory, everyone should "look both ways". In practice, there are a lot of situations where it's foggy, or the car's coming around a corner, or it's night and someone's not using their lights, or the person crossing the street just makes a mistake.

Or if they are in a hurry. Seen it many times, even nearly done it myself once or twice (you know, you're on one side of the street, your bus/tram is just pulling up on the other, and you're already late...). Engine sound is useful, the funny electric whine an electric engine makes might not be enough. While I haven't heard of accidents caused by electric buses my city recently bought (they're still audible, especially on the outside), a smaller engine would be almost inaudible over ambient noise.

Also, at least in the decrepit jalopies my family tends to drive, engine noise is an important diagnostic tool. If it starts sounding funny, then you better stop and take a look (that said, should any modern car survive long enough to become such a jalopy, the "noise enhancer" would likely be long gone). Not to mention switching gears is done by ear by most, in case of a manual transmission. I usually try to keep them quiet, though there's something in the high-pitched roar of the turbo firing up. :)

Expedition, 5.4  *brofist*  i have my little Saturn 1.9 for economy, the SUTruck is for hauling family, groceries, and large snow banks at the end of the driveway that I can't plow with the Saturn.  (Although, you would be surprised what that little car can manage considering it's size.)

I'll second the point on the small cars being more capable than you expect. My old 5 speed dohc Saturn was pretty good, but my hands down favourite car in the winter was my old Neon.

Re: Cars/Trucks are now pumping fake engine noise through audio systems
This past month, we finally got rid of the beloved littlle '97 Ford Escort that I learned to drive on.  I can guarantee that thing didn't have any pumped-in noise, but for packing a stunning 110 HP, it was a lot of fun to drive.

If North Korea actually had their cyber warfare **** together, they'd hack the engine noise of all Hyundais and Kias to play Gilbert Gottfried going AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
