How did I not know this was a thing till now?
Hey all!

I can't believe this sort of community exists, I played both freespace one and 2 growing up, and on a recent replay, was wondering if they made a FS3. While Volition may sadden me, I'm pretty stoked to find you guys. I come from Vancouver, and I don't know how helpful this may be, but I'm more than able to record any voice work people may need.

Quick question though: I started playing Blue Planet (the first one) last night, and I believe I may have some rendering issues. Earth did not appear at all in the first mission, there were no asteroids when I was supposedly in the Mars-Jupiter Asteroid belt, and the system after the first Knossos device is pure white. Are these usual things or have I messed something up setting up FSO?

Thanks, and glad to have found this.

Please post your fs2_open.log file.  Instructions on how to do this can be found in this post.

Okay, my first guess would be that you need to ditch the adv-bp.vp file.

Re: How did I not know this was a thing till now?
Deleting the file has fixed nothing

Re: How did I not know this was a thing till now?
This file also looks suspect: C:\Games\FreeSpace2\mediavps_2014\MV_RadarIcons.vp

Can you either redownload it, or delete it?  If you used the FSO Installer, you should be able to reinstall it by checking the box "Re-run installation for mods that are already installed and up to date", then clicking "next, next next", etc.

Re: How did I not know this was a thing till now?
Attempted reinstall of MV_RadarIcons.vp failed the first time, but worked the second. Has not fixed the issues, attached is the screen when I try to start a mission. Just in case that helps

Re: How did I not know this was a thing till now?
Holy ****! Something is much more wrong here than I thought.

It's weird that your log is cutting off so soon. Can you delete the radar icons VP, then generate a new log?

Re: How did I not know this was a thing till now?
This may sound weird, but the debug launch is starting the actual game, here's the new log though.

But now I'm at a loss as to what's going wrong.

Re: How did I not know this was a thing till now?
Forgive the potential bad question, but would it make a difference if I kept running the game on debug mode all the way into the actual mission? The game appears to run fine until I get there.

Re: How did I not know this was a thing till now?
Definitely, grab a log from the mission. Does it still look all broken in debug mode?

Yes, still shows the same.

Re: How did I not know this was a thing till now?
The log isn't giving us what we need. This doesn't look like something caused by bad game data. Assuming he used the installer and it ran correctly (which the later logs seem to corroborate), all his VPs are good. It's gotta be graphic related, maybe even shaders or video card drivers. But we're out of my element to debug. I think there may be some debug flags he can set to get us more graphic data in the debug log, but I'm not familiar with them. I'm going to find someone who is on IRC and point them here.

However, if the above is wrong... we need to check his reported checksums against the MediaVPs and BP releases just to be sure it's not bad data.

I can see that he's running an ATI Radeon HD 5400 with reported OpenGL 4.0, so that should be good enough.

As a simple test... try running the game with a Nightly Build. Also, does this kind of thing happen on anything other than Blue Planet mod?

Battuta: Is the current BP release in the Installer still using custom shaders or any other super edge of the knife features? (Been so busy with my projects, I still haven't checked out BP since the original WiH R2 release... :nervous: )

No, it's not. The latest BP release on the installer is built around trunk features only.

blasphem-e: First, please make sure that you have installed the latest driver for your GPU. Do not trust Windows Update, go to http://support.amd.com/en-us/download and grab the one appropriate for your system.
Second, grab a nightly build and try it out. They have a new renderer which may work better for you (Although you will probably have to disable shadows to get good performance).
Third, if that does not address the problem, open the Launcher, go to the troubleshooting section, and activate the option named "Do not use shaders for model rendering". While this will disable a lot of the shiny effects, it will also cause the renderer to fall back to a simpler model that may avoid the issues you're having.

That combination did it and everything appears to be working normally. Thanks to all of you for helping me out on this one. Super appreciated!
