That version is very, very old. ShivanSPS made quite a few mistakes in the way he packaged things in the v1.0 download (Not including a hacked executable for FS2 which doesn't ask for the CDs is just one of them.)

My advice would be to use Turey's installer to update it to a full SCP install as you'll probably have problems with the version you have (I believe that it ran on 3.6.7 which is so full of bugs compared to 3.6.9 that you'd be silly not to upgrade for that alone!). You should also rename your Data folder to something else and make a new one with empty folders as  if I remember correctly that was a source of a lot of the bugs.

Incidentally though the reason it was asking for the CDs is cause you're running the wrong file. Freespace2.exe  and FS2.exe are the Retail versions. You want to run launcher.exe to get the SCP running.

Be more descriptive in the future. We're all use to many locations to get fs around here. So it really helps to tell where you got it from as opposed to us guessing (because we will not guess). Even the way you installed it, there's the fso-dvd, shivansps pack, turey's installer, fs2 retail install, and the hotu version which i would stay away from. That you used winrar to decompress....yeah i decompress lots of files for fsopen as well, but since i don't know which one you're running or even get a hint for how you installed it to even point to some evidence as to which of the various methods you used to get fs, then we at hlpbb still can't help.

But, the number one way i recomend that wont ask for cd's at all is Turey's online installer (http://www.fsoinstaller.com) to get you the latest and greatest in everything fs2.

and the hotu version which i would stay away from.

OI! Don't have a go at the HotU version. If you're planning to upgrade to SCP and have no interest in retail, v2 is actually the best way to get FS2 retail onto your PC. Download, extract. That's it.

v1 on the other hand was a pain in the arse.

Hmm... can you d'l hip63's DVD, + the 1.01 patch, and install them?  I'd do that, if you don't have high-speed internet on the computer you're trying to install to.  If you do, of course, then use the Installer.

Only thing: if you use hip63's DVD, after it installs & you run the patch, rename the folder FS1_port_3 to fsport or it will not work with other campaigns.

Hmm that's an old version of FSOpen you're using? From the 25th Jan 2006 from the title of it? Try using the 3.6.9 version as it is more stable and less buggy! As said use Turey's installer in jr2 signature or the post above to upgrade to all the latest stuff!
Title: Re: Insert CD? I have free version!

That error is caused by trying to run FS2_Open without running launcher.exe first if I remember correctly.

ty for all your help
unfortunenately i got a virus from a torrent i downloaded and to make sure it was dead and gone,  i decided to delete my torrent reader
if theres a non-torrent version i would be happy to download it
Title: Re: Insert CD? I have free version!

Lol, sounds like what happened to me one time. The big mistake was that i didn't download my preferred torrent client from the makers official webpage. I downloaded it from somewhere else, where some cheesey guy repackaged it with some spyware and trojans.

So yeah, download software only from the makers webpage. And that'll save you a lot of trouble.

And yes there's a non-torrent way of getting fsopen. Turey's installer!!!! (http://www.fsoinstaller.com/) It's like i mentioned this earlier in the thread or something. But turey's installer is really just a checklist of what you want to build your own customized fsopen on your machine. After you checked off stuff on the checklist to give you a fully working fsopen with whatever campaigns, it just connects to the server where all of the data is and downloads it to your machine. It'll take it's time, but as long as you have highspeed internet you should be good to get the game in 4 hours or so. Don't badmouth the installer, it's really easy and efficient, and great to get with it downloading when say you're away from home or not going to use your computer for a while (such as overnight). It's not that tureys installer is slow;it's not. It's that fs2 open is 2.2gb total in size and bigger depending on what extra stuff like campaigns you want to get along with it.

OK, get your torrent client here:

http://www.utorrent.com/

You can get either the stable, stand-alone version, the stable, installable version (I recommend this one), or the experimental new version.  Huggybaby recommends uTorrent, and, having used it, I do now also recommend it.  I used to use Azureus, but it's too bloated now.  :(

I recommend bitcomet. BITCOMET THE ****Z (http://www.bitcomet.com/). That's the one i recommend. Doesn't take much resources, it's very fast, and has support for dht like no other torrent client out there. In fact if you want to only download from dht peers without using any peers that are on trackers, you can do that as well with bitcomet. Dht networking is trackerless, and is therefore untraceable. With bitcomet, you can download only from dht, or only from trackers, or download from trackers and the dht network for extra peers and faster download. But, yes, bitcomet, you might like it. It runs great in wine too since ktorrent sucks for dht.

Post by: jr2 on July 09, 2007, 03:37:50 am
uTorrent runs at about 5MB mem usage, I think... I'll have to check how it is when all torrents are active.  but it's better than Azureus, at 140 MB!!
Title: Re: Insert CD? I have free version!
Post by: Huggybaby on July 09, 2007, 04:01:58 pm
I've used BitComet before and liked it. It went through a rough period (it was banned by many trackers due to the way it handled traffic, and it included adware), but the new version looks really good.

DHT is supported by all the main clients though, so that's nothing unique. Interestingly, there are two different versions of DHT, Azureus (Azureus) and Mainline (Bittorrent, Bitcomet, µTorrent, etc.) and unfortunately they're incompatible.

DHT only helps much on torrents without a tracker, which is rare.

DHT does not make you anonymous. Your ip address is in the open to be logged. You might eliminate some traffic from the tracker, but only if the torrent is running pure DHT and has no tracker at all, which never happens on purpose. Your address is still open to whoever connects to you, and your traffic is still being logged by your isp, etc.

There is a feature called Protocol Encryption, but that won't protect you either. Some people use a program called PeerGuardian for a degree of anonymity.

Usually, torrent speed will be the same for any client you use. Different clients get through your firewall and router in different ways. Bitcomet is supposed to be good at NAT traversal using UDP, so that could help if you're having trouble connecting at full speed. Fortunately I don't have to mess with that.

So it boils down to features and implementation as to your preference. For power users, it's either Azureus or µTorrent. For torrents with tens of thousands of files, µTorrent is preferred.

Post by: S-99 on July 09, 2007, 10:27:56 pm
Well yeah my ip address is still open on a list of peers who are also on dht. But, that's not the point i was getting at. But, dht is trackerless, trackers are the main way people get caught, and if i can remove that all the way then good, and if i can remove that slightly then i'm only partly to gain. But, yeah, if i released torrents they would only be dht, **** trackers. Pretty safe to say trackers aren't secure while dht is more secure.

OK, I just checked uTorrent... while seeding 10 torrents at a total combined speed of 92 kBps, total files' size is 8.53 GB, its mem usage is 10 MB.  :p to Azureus.

You know, if all else fails, just stick a CD (any CD) in the drive.  FS2's CD-check only ever checked to see if a CD was there, not to see if there was a specific CD there.  I've been running retail FS2 with the Halo CD in my optical drive for about a month now.

You live and learn. Everyone has their own way of getting fs. And for newbies finding their most convenient way of getting fs is to dabble a little bit in all of the areas of being able to get fs. For me, i started out with the stock fs2 cd install and then applied all of the mvp's and upgrades manually like many others did. Then shivan-sps pack was tempting. And then i eventually got tired of having to keep up with knowing where all the little tidbits for fs-scp were offered on the forum and how to install each. After that i'm sure many users got tired of some of the redundant files that come from a stock fs2 cd install and applying the mvp's and upgrades after that.

When turey's installer came out. The fact that you can get a whole entire awesome free game from scratch was awesome, and eliminated some of those redundant file issues as well (i'm just talking about old files that results from a cd install that never get used and sometimes with the addition of the mvp's and upgrades sometimes you get redundant files that came from the cd install that don't get used because everything is in favor of fs-scp and mvp's when running fso).

Not to blame for advice not followed. :p

As you can see I did quite clearly say that updating the original download was not only possible but advised.

You know, I was really just waiting to see how long it would take for someone to suggest it, but apparently offering the easy solution isn't in vogue right now.

Yes. And it is rather starting to annoy me that the immediate solution for some people is to tell people to redownload everything with no respect for the bandwidth used by the poster or Razorkiss' server.

Post by: jr2 on July 12, 2007, 03:41:41 am
...Which is why I'd recommend installing Retail FS2 & copying the .mve cutscenes from FS2 & where possible FS1, before downloading... it reduces the bandwidth used.  Ofc, if you can fix it w/out re-downloading, that's even better... ;)

To be honest I'm a bad choice of person to maintain the list of Freespace 2 download links. It would be much smarter if someone like yourself or jr2 copied it, corrected the dead links and posted it themselves.

At the moment I'm the only person who can change those links. If someone else takes on the responsibility they can keep it up to date and I can still modify the list since I have moderator powers on any board I can see.

Explain what you did step by step, and then give the error (what happened wrong).  Number the steps.  It will make things easier:

1) I downloaded uTorrent, got the file succesfully
2) I did xx, like the instructions in xx said to do, it worked ok
3) I used the Launcher with options...

you get the drift..

Are you actually hitting the "Ready Room" button? Because the Campaign room only allows you to change the campaign, not play it.

Oh my god werewere is a chicken without a head. If one way of getting the game doesn't work for him, he goes to the next, and if that doesn't work, he goes to the next. Had a problem with bittorrent (try using it again), had a problem with the installer (try using it again, i used it last week to install fs2 and it was slow, but finished). After that RTFM around here. And the fso doesn't need any cd's in any drives for it to work. Fso requiring a cd in the drive was solved a long time ago.

Anyway, making the game work is as easy as using the installer, and telling it to grab what you need to run fso along with the mediavp's and stuff. And if not that then it's the same thing looking for everything manually yourself to make a working game assemblage which the installer will give you. After knowing what you need to grab, it's just a matter of learning how the launcher works. Wow, 2 steps...get the game files, and know how the launcher works. There you go, nothing else special like a cd in your drive. Getting the fso to run does require some knowledge, but it's not that big, and doesn't take that long to get used to. After that people either make it work through persistence or are trying to get a really big silver platter with little thought and effort involved.
