Title: the endless paths of modeling lego ships
Post by: fightermedic on August 06, 2013, 11:20:36 am
All ships in this thread have been inspired or are outright copies of lego models i found on the internet
you can find inspiring lego spaceship models yourself at places like this (be prepared for some serious awesomeness):
http://www.flickr.com/groups/1086756@N21/pool/with/3178388548/#photo_3178388548
http://www.mocpages.com/directory.php/29

If you want to use any of my work, you have every right to change it in any way you like, and redistribute it wholly or parts of it as you wish
Furthermore there is no need for credit of any form, just take whatever you need
If somebody has need for any of the development files, like blender files or uncompressend and higher resolution textures, just give me a call and they'll be yours

(P3D links are using much smaller .jpgs as textures and are meant for first impression only!)
These are the ships based on lego models that i've created myself:

 I like the drone very much! Can you post a picture of the original lego model?

Nice! Is the design yours?
Title: Re: the endless paths of modeling lego ships
Post by: Lepanto on August 06, 2013, 03:55:13 pm
You've been quite the prolific modeler, Mr. fightermedic; congratulations.

A point of criticism: Neither the drone nor the fighter really look that "Shivan", in my opinion. Besides the dorsal curved spikes on the drone, they both look more at home in the Terran fleet.
Title: Re: the endless paths of modeling lego ships
Post by: fightermedic on August 06, 2013, 05:36:13 pm
Nice! Is the design yours?
no, random find on the internet
it's amazing, there is enough cool stuff out there to fill a lifetime of modeling, hence the thread title

@Lepanto: agreed, they probably aren't going to be the most shivan looking models ever, but i don't think they are terribly wrong either

The original lego model reminds me of the GTF Claymore, from INFR1.

i've added a P3D of the frigate to the first post
Title: Re: the endless paths of modeling lego ships

Nice model, quite a weird looking shape but at the same time a remarkable refreshing design.
I've never had any lego models, now I think I should have asked for some when kid.
Title: Re: the endless paths of modeling lego ships
Post by: fightermedic on August 07, 2013, 04:14:14 pm
added the engines, first post updated
now only detailing in the mid section and the back remains :)
i think this is turnin out to be quite an interesting ship, but i already dread the texturing

I agree. I like all those fins and small details you are adding! Nice job! Did you already think what specie/faction is your frigate meant for?
Title: Re: the endless paths of modeling lego ships
Post by: Alan Bolte on August 07, 2013, 09:43:50 pm
I think the main thing that keeps it from looking Shivan is the uniformity from fore to aft. If the spine weren't quite so straight and the length of the side panels less uniform, it'd look plenty Shivan. I'm thinking with a bit of a morphing it could look like the hate-child of the Rakshasa and the Demon, but with the long thin spikes from the Cain.
Title: Re: the endless paths of modeling lego ships
Post by: fightermedic on August 08, 2013, 06:11:48 am
morphing the spine into something less straight might be a good idea indeed, i will see about that
Title: Re: the endless paths of modeling lego ships
Post by: fightermedic on August 13, 2013, 05:38:36 am
the model of the frigate, which i'm going to call SFg Beelzeboul, is now complete and the p3d link updated
on to the textureing
Title: Re: the endless paths of modeling lego ships
Post by: whitearrow on August 13, 2013, 09:25:31 am
That's a great job! Although the design is complex all elements are very neat. I'm looking forward to seeing it textured!
Title: Re: the endless paths of modeling lego ships
Post by: Nyctaeus on August 13, 2013, 10:23:46 am
To be honest... The frigate doesn't look shivan. Even a little. There are planety of spikes and other shivan stuff, but the main shape is definitely not shivan. Reminds me a second incarnation of Stratcomm's heavy AWACS by DE Team, rather than new shivan warship of death. Maybe some jammer, big freighter, subspace perturber... Whatever.

Debris for these better be individual lego pieces...
Title: Re: the endless paths of modeling lego ships
Post by: An4ximandros on August 13, 2013, 12:24:34 pm
They should be all the bits of the ship broken apart, that way it looks like breaking a Lego kit.

some progress with the texture

Just goes to show that you can't judge a ship before it's textured. We need more weird-looking shivan ships like this one.

all the textures are mapped, now i need to create the UV and bake everything

This is... Awesome . But that cage-like structure ruins shivan "feel" of the frigate. Without it, it could be even a good succesor for Ravana
Title: Re: the endless paths of modeling lego ships
Post by: fightermedic on August 19, 2013, 01:45:32 pm
the armour plating will be a seperate submodel, if someone wants to use the ship without it, he is encouraged to do so
but this ship is going to have very limited weapons, it's intended as a ship that launches swarms of drones for attack

Title: Re: the endless paths of modeling lego ships
Post by: Lepanto on August 20, 2013, 01:37:38 pm
Definitely does look more Shivan, now that it's textured. Still doesn't have the jagged look that I'd expect from Shivans, but overall, I approve.
Title: Re: the endless paths of modeling lego ships
Post by: BritishShivans on August 20, 2013, 02:38:29 pm
I still don't like the front too much, like, the four red "eye" things, but it's a pretty cool model overall.

the bombs will be placed on the wings to the far left and right
the guns are not modelled yet

These shivan looking ships you're making. What are these ships gonna be? What will be their role. So far the ship looks very Shivan like while at the same time looking very utilitarian. Basically combining both designs into one. Very interesting work, and nice job with the strike bomber so far.

the Beezeboul has limited anti capital weapons, and is intended for fighter supression, in the form of launching big swarms of drones

in other news: updated the p3d link of the Raptor, which is the aforementioned strikebomber
the basic model is complete :)
i will set up the texture to use team colors

added download links for the Beezeboul and the Imp
the frigate is still suffering from the strange crashes in debug mode, but works on the normal exe, i'm not sure if the crashes in debug mode are a local problem on my PC or a problemwith the model

very nice models! Do you use some kind of preshaped standardized meshes for lego pieces? Or do you use a specific software?

nope, everything is modelled by hand and changed as i see fit, although those last models are pretty damn close to the original i suppose

Indeed they are! Anyway I found this tool for blender on a German forum (http://www.blendpolis.de/viewtopic.php?f=12&t=37706&p=425383#p425353 (http://www.blendpolis.de/viewtopic.php?f=12&t=37706&p=425383#p425353)). I haven't tried it yet, but it looks pretty promising... it may be interesting for you.

nice linke whitearrow, sadly it doesn't help with my job, i don't want them to completely look like lego ships ;)

update: i have addes a bit more of a red glow effect to the SDr Imp, it's looking at least a bit more shivan now

and here is one more ship, a space superiority fighter this time, the devil
maybe one more model and then i will have to texture them all
i hate texturing
maybe two more models before texturing?  :doubt:

thank you, i have added a third gun though, as i felt 2 would be a bit lacking for a space superiority fighter, and doubling the fire rate via 2 firepoints for each gun a bit over the top
i'm going to handle the racoon and raptor's guns this way though

I remember a certain space theme lego set that I used to love when I was younger. Thought I'd share this, maybe you could make use out of this and perhaps turn it shivan?

i could see that one working, too bad i didn't know of it when i was doing the Imp, i guess it would have been better than my current attempt
ah well, too late for that, mabe someday i'll do a second shivan drone (or someone else does)

anyway, here is what i've got of the interceptor so far:

like this, it could even work as a medium bomber

this model shows quite well that with a good concept to start with and a bit of practice even a beginner like myself can do something quite decent
the lego model this is based on is just too cool and detailed to completely fail in the modeling part

Title: Re: the endless paths of modeling lego ships
Post by: fightermedic on September 24, 2013, 05:02:59 pm
it's a Battlestar Galactica like radar as Diaspora uses
i've just added a freespace-like backround to it together with a bit of recoloring and using the well know radar icons from the mediavps for all the freespace ships

i'm sticking so close to the lego models on the last 2 ones that it's almost pointless to show them ;) my lack of creativity is disturbing

the lego model is titled Blue Devil, so i used Devil as a working title, later i was thinking to name it Tasmanian Devil, but that's just a strange name for a fighter

Thanks.

Well I certainly approve of giving the ship the darker look you gave it compared to the model. I think it looks much better than the model in that regard.

How about Azure Devil?

Makes me think of this smiley: :mad2:

Devil Squadron logo! :D

Hmmm, the Blue Devil is my 2nd favourite out of all those ships, behind the FV7 Renegade.

This is the awesome looking Freespace 2 ship mods I've ever seen. I plan to use many of your models. The bomber "Venom", Interceptor "Gaia", Space Superiority "Devil", Heavy Assault "Racoon", Stealth/Recon "Stalker", and the Strikebomber "Raptor" are going to be used as the Coalition's (the alliance between the GTVA and the CDF) primary fighters and bombers in my upcoming mod, FreeSpace: Reunited, alongside the Vasudan and Shivan warships, the SFg Beelzeboul, the SDr Imp, the SSP Chakra and the GVCv Mahal. Finish up your work, and I download them for use ASAP.

Each of these ships so fr are brilliant, very good work on each so far, really looking forward to see many more creations occur this way. The more variation the better as well!

Definitely reminds me of the time where I switched my LEGO building themes from medieval towards space ships (as a direct consequence of running into Freespace 1 in 1998 while I was just in my teens), glad to see both united in such a way while feeling like they are natural terran space ships.

Are those coils part of the weapons system, shields, or engines?  If they were part of the engines, and if this was intended for the FS universe, it could be some Unification War era ship, perhaps the first fighter equipped with an independent subspace drive.

considering the insane amount of work this corvette turns out to be, it's rather unlikely i will tackle such an enormous ship in the near future, i'd guess it would take half a year or more to do it properly if you can not work on it full time

also: splitting up the armour parts is booooooooooooooring, *gosh*

Title: Re: the endless paths of modeling lego ships
Post by: fightermedic on May 13, 2014, 03:24:16 pm
i see where you are coming from, but sometimes you have to know when to stop, both from a performance and a modeling-effort point of view
that said, i think it does look more empty than it actually is on these screens, and furthermore 99% of the time either only little parts of the armour will be destroyed which will make it look a lot more solid, or the player would not even have time to notice the details
but yea, there's always someting more you can do

You call it a science vessel, I think it looks more like it should be some kind of fuel freighter.

Nice.

Can we get some more shots closer up perhaps?

I do get the science vessel look from being informed it is a science vessel, but personally I would have thought it looks more like perhaps a frigate of some kind.

But maybe it could be both. Who says a science vessel has to be a wimpy, fragile thing? They are important ships, why not have a science vessel be able to take care of itself to an extent? Maybe not a true warship, but considerably better equipped to defend itself and absorb punishment than some freighter?

for closeup looks there is that P3D on the first page :D
as for the ship looking like a science vessel or not: everybody can of course use it as one sees fit, but the ship has no turrets :P

These are incredible. :jaw:

Two things:

First, could you possibly be convinced to model some of the official classic '90s Space sets? Space Police, Blacktron, Ice Planet?

Second: WHERE DID YOU GET THAT PYRO?

i have looked at some of the old classics, acutally that was how it all started, but in the end the ships created by people just look better most of the time :D in the end this is not about creating lego ships, just about creating ships who happen to be "inspired" by lego models

the pyro is in the wiki, i just created normal and team color maps for it

thanks for all the praise :)

Sorry to bump, but i have found that team colours no longer work. The last build i got it working on was 3.7.2. Is this a table fix? If so what needs to get fixed?

Format of team color table entries shouldn't have changed; team glow maps were added, but that shouldn't break previously-working team color textures.

Thats weird then, because all these ships are coming up as grey and only grey.

Made this recently. Took me a while to figure out, with the Hecate's hull design being... what it is, but I am pleased with the end result.

Instructions are available on my bricklink page.
