Title: what is this, i don't even
Post by: BugMeNot on August 10, 2010, 08:53:26 am
What the **** is this? I download this fsport, open the zip file and there's just a .vp file and a readme. So I open the readme, expecting to find detailed instructions on how to install this **** and there's not even any ****ing instructions. Did you not even for a moment stop to think that people may not be able to read your mind? PROVIDE SOME INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS PLEASE.

Are you using FreeSpace Open or retail?

Did you read the release thread?

http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=58357.0

so, it's either

Quote
Retail FS2: Unzip to your Freespace2 directory, and make a new pilot. To return to the FS2 campaign, move, delete, or rename the extension of fsport3_1_1.vp. The readme should help answer the most common questions.

or

Quote
FS2 Open: Place all the .vp files (except mv_fsport.vp) to a new 'fsport' directory in your Freespace2 directory, and select it from the MOD tab of the Launcher. Place the .ogg cutscene files to \fsport\data\movies\ (create the directory).
If using the FSPort MediaVPs, place mv_fsport.vp to a new 'fsport-mediavps' directory in your FreeSpace2 folder and select it instead of 'fsport' from the MOD tab of the Launcher. Be sure that you have the 3.6.10 MediaVPs installed in 'mediavps' and you're using FSO 3.6.10 Final or newer. If you're playing a mod that uses FSPort, add 'fsport-mediavps' to the mod.ini just before 'fsport' in the Secondarylist line.

You must select a Ported campaign in the campaign room such as "The Main FreeSpace Campaign" or "Silent Threat".  Simply launching into the ready room will start the main FreeSpace 2 campaign, which will not work when the Port is active.

Yes, the release thread is there for a purpose.

Though it would be logical to have instructions in a readme, if one is provided.

Those instructions are incoherent and too complicated. Provide simple, step-by-step, user-friendly instructions.
Just tell me what to do, man. I have installed all the **** with the autoinstaller and have fs1 and fs2 retail discs. I only want to play fs1.

Okay, here you go:

Step 1. Place all the .vp files (except mv_fsport.vp) to a new 'fsport' directory in your Freespace2 directory

Step 1.5: Place the .ogg cutscene files to \fsport\data\movies\ (create the directory).

Step 2. select it from the MOD tab of the Launcher.

Step 3: If using the FSPort MediaVPs, place mv_fsport.vp in a new 'fsport-mediavps' directory in your FreeSpace2 folder and select it instead of 'fsport' from the MOD tab of the Launcher.

Step 4: Be sure that you have the 3.6.10 MediaVPs installed in 'mediavps' and you're using FSO 3.6.10 Final or newer

Step 5: You must select a Ported campaign in the campaign room such as "The Main FreeSpace Campaign" or "Silent Threat".  Simply launching into the ready room will start the main FreeSpace 2 campaign, which will not work when the Port is active.

Where'd you download it from? Because those instructions in the release thread are how you install the thing. There's no simpler or easier way to do it except to use the autoinstaller... which you've already done.

I'm sorry, but if you just want to Download, Install, and Play, you'd be better off with retail FS1. If you can't be bothered with even attempting the instructions with provided then we can't help you.

And if you can follow General Battuta's instructions, please let us know. :doubt:

Surprisingly high ratio of 'useful and helpful replies' to 'rude and impatient requests'.

This really is quite a friendly community, for better or worse.  I guess technically he said please.

General's instructions do NOT work. I just get a black screen when I run it through the launcher. In case of FS1, I get the opening cinematic and the pilot screen, then black screen. In FS2 I get nothing. Please provide CLEAR, STEP BY STEP INSTRUCTIONS ON HOW TO INSTALL EVERYTHING.

Let's start from the beginning and assume that I downloaded FreeSpaceOpenInstaller.zip. What now?

It starts now, but it's still broken. I can't get past training phase 2. The advanced drones are invisible and if I shoot at them it goes right through. Do I have to have FS1 installed too?

No, you do not have to have FS1 installed.

Do you have FS2 installed?

Yes, as per instructions. I have put everything the autoinstaller downloaded into the FS2 directory.
I just tried fsport without mediavps and the drones appear correctly. When I play with mediavps they're invisible. What gives??? I want to play with mediavps!

You need to post a debug log I imagine, unless it's a common bug (haven't heard of it though), instructions are here; http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=56279.msg1180359#msg1180359

Yes, please do that. Yelling won't solve the problem, but more information for us might.

You realise we need the debug log to help you solve whatever you have screwed up?

You've been EXTREMELY impolite and rude all throughout this thread, if you continue to behave like this I doubt anyone will help you at all.

More useful, it's maybe more easy for a new user to download the offline installer like the Hips63 one. Install all at the right place. The only problem is that it's not up-to-date with the latest MediaVps, but it works fine. You can add other stuffs after.

Edit : It's here : http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=64634.0

Here's the log. I played until the invisible drones appeared, then quit.

Well, you need the actual MediaVPs if you want to use the FSPort MediaVPs.

And you don't need to have any disks in your optical drives.

What are you talking about? I'm supposed to have those already, I had the autoinstalled download everything. There's **** in the fsport-mediavps directory. Are you telling me I've got to download something IN ADDITION???

BugMeNot: If you have downloaded the latest mediavps, you should have a folder called mediavps_3612 in your FS2 folder. If that's the case, go to the fsport-mediavps folder, and open the file called mod.ini. In the line that starts with "secondaryline =", edit the mediavps entry to say "mediavps_3612", then open the Launcher, go to the mod tab, and reselect the mod (Just click on "No mod", then select the fsport mediavps again).

Also, calm the **** down. Yelling will not improve your standing.

@ the E : Are you sure it will work (no compatibility issue ?)

Galemp said here : http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=70737.msg1399349#msg1399349  that we'll have to wait for FSPort 3.2.

Tried some campaigns who were just working fine, but ASW (for example) don't work properly with 3.6.12...

Edit : ...but I'm not complaining if I could finish an interesting campaign even with no MediaVps  :D

Don't be too hard on him, the whole FSPort/FSPort_mediavps thing is...pretty sodding complicated if you don't know about how FSO handles mod directories, and still is even if you do. :doubt: (by god it was nightmare trying to get ST:R cooperating with the mediavps)

You'll find that the eggheads running FSPort are surprisingly tolerant of trolls. fsfreak88 is probably the biggest example of a troll that was given a lot of time (i.e. 2 forum threads) to make up. He didn't, so he got what was coming.

Spoiler:
Ban + IP block. The latter is something that you just cannot circumvent with a new user. :P
