Getting Ready

So you want to become an ace, do you? Get ready for lots of fun.

There are only a few steps to joining your first game, and you only have to set up once.

Step 1
Registering

Your old PXO account won't work anymore, you need to register an FS2Net account to play. Register here (http://fs2netd.game-warden.com/main.php?area=register). Once you've registered, click the link in the activation email to activate your account. *Note please use lowercase only for username as there may be a problem.  We are investigating.

Step 2
Making sure your client is in a position to play multi 'validly'.

Firstly, multi is an environment where the clients, and host have to be somewhat in sync, if they're not all sorts of funny things can happen.
3.6.12MVPs are currently validated with the updates, although this may change, either they, or no mods, should be used if you wish to earn medals, ranks or work well with the other people playing multi.
Many people miss this patch; http://homepage.ntlworld.com/karajorma/FAQ/Downloads/HotUv1.20Pack.rar this is basically a retail-released patch by volition that's required for multi validation whether you're using the MVPs or not.
Also, it is of great importance that you have a clean FreeSpace 2, install.

Step 3
The Files

You need the multiplayer mission pack and optionally the voice pack, download them (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,45919.0.html). Put them in /FreeSpace2 (your main directory). Next get FreeSpace Open 3.6.18 Inferno Final (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=83889.0) and the Launcher 5.5g (http://swc.fs2downloads.com/files/Launcher55g.zip). Extract these files from the .ZIP archives and put these in your main FreeSpace 2 directory as well. Open up the launcher and select the fs2_open_3_6_16.exe or similar version you just downloaded (Click "Browse"):

Alternatively, check the Nightlies forum,

Step 4
(Optional) Forwarding Your Ports

In order to host a game (and only to host), you need to forward ports 7808 and 7117 (TCP and UDP) on your router or firewall. You need an exception for FSO in your firewall (the .EXE and not the Launcher). This can be done in the router configuration page, the address should be 192.168.x.x. Your firewall should have a page for exception settings.

Step 5
The Launcher

Open the Launcher now (make sure that you have 5.5f (http://swc.fs2downloads.com/files/Launcher55g.zip)), and open the "Network" tab. It should look like this:

Make sure that you select your connection speed and such, but DO NOT TOUCH THE BOTTOM BOXES! Make sure that you have no MODs selected under the mod tab (unless you know what you're doing) and don't check any boxes under Multiplayer on the Features tab.

Press "Apply" and then "Run", and you're almost there!

Step 6
Ingame Settings

Once you've opened up the game, create a multiplayer pilot:

Press enter once you type in the name and go to the options screen:

Change the stuff to match that in the boxes, it should already match the rest of the page.
The only thing that should be altered, is if you are a client on a host who doesn't have a fast connection (read; 1.5-2mbit up+), is that your object update should be set to medium or low instead.
Hosts, should always be set to high.

Step 7
Playing a Game

Now you're ready to play! Remember that games are not always on, there aren't going to be people online at every hour of the day, go see if anyone on IRC (http://widget.mibbit.com/?settings=b73fe961ed217d9a3cbd9637dc7ba9bf&server=irc.esper.net&channel=%23hard-light&noServerTab=false) wants to play.

Click on the big red door in the middle of the screen (Labeled "Multiplayer") and you'll be brought to this screen:

The "Web Ranking" and "Pilot Info" buttons are used to find out where you stand among other pilots and the "Channels" dialog at the top is rarely used as there aren't enough players. Look to see what channel people are on. (NOTE: This does not include people ingame, only in the lobby)

Click on the "Games" button th the bottom-right to go to thge following screen:

None of those servers have players! That's strange! That's because they are dedicated servers, run by our own FUBAR. They are constantly running and anyone can join, joining sets the game in motion. Note that some of them have bracketed text (FSPort-MVPs, etc.). This means that they are running mods such as FreeSpace Port or the MediaVPs, you'll need to select the right folder from the "MOD" tab of the launcher before you join the game. It's best to set things up beforehand in IRC or wherever you organize the game so that there isn't confusion regarding mods.

Now you're all ready to take to the stars, Watch your six pilot!

Troubleshooting

Steps to troubleshooting:

If you still don't have an answer, post a thread here.

Common Issues

I get an error about hacked and/or invalid table files!

Make sure that you're using the same mod as the server (i.e. FSPort or the 3.6.10 MediaVPs) and that you don't have any table (.TBM and .TBL) files hanging around in \FreeSpace2\data\tables or in \FreeSpace2\<Enabled Mod Folder>\data\tables.
Title: Standalone Servers
Post by: colecampbell666 on June 04, 2009, 04:51:21 pm
Standalone Servers

A standalone server is one that needs no human input, you set it up to run on a PC and then you leave it running. People can join at will, and you don`t have to do a thing.

Setup

Setting up a standalone is pretty easy. Make sure that you read the Getting Ready (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,63609.msg1252911.html#msg1252911) guide, and follow it exactly.

Open up the launcher, and set your features tab like this:

If you want to run a mod, select the appropriate mod under the "MOD" tab, and continue to the next step. (NOTE: The only mod besides FS2 that has multiplayer missions is FSPort. You can select MediaVPs if you want to have better graphics)

Do that, and then click "Apply" and "Run". You'll see this window, and you can close the launcher now.

Name your server, and you're done. The other options are pretty self-explanatory.

I followed all instructions but I keep getting an error saying I didn't define the type of internet connection I'm using... I'm sure it's unblocked on my firewall and router, and all. And I'm also sure I did define my connection on the Launcher...

using 3.6.10 Final and Launcher 5.5e

Did you ever setup the connection settings before getting launcher 5.5e?  I've got a theory but I need to test it.  Would be helpful to know.

If 5.5e is the first launcher you used to set up the network settings can you try it with the 5.5d launcher and see if it works?

Need a bit of help guys. I'm new around, trying to make TBP multi work. i've followed all the instructions and i can log,see and play in other people's games but when i try to host my game doesnt appear in the list.

A guys suggested to me that since i can log i'm not having a problem with TBP but something that generally has to do with my comp i'd better ask here.

I'm using windows firewall on windows vista (ye i know -_-) and a company grade symantec antivirus. Tried disabling them both nothing happened.

I've been going over multiplayer instructions and threads for a few days and I'm pretty sure i've tried everything out there.

Any ideas? Thnx in advance

read the instructions carefully, you need to forward your ports in order to host.

Quote
Step 2
Forwarding Your Ports

In order to host a game, you need to forward ports 7808 and 7117 (TCP and UDP) on your router or firewall. You need an exception for FSO in your firewall (the .EXE and not the Launcher). This can be done in the router configuration page, the address should be 192.168.x.x. Your firewall should have a page for exception settings.

this is at least for FSO, not sure if the same ports also apply for TBP

I've done that to firewall, thought it wont matter for the router but it seems it does for hosting. Sadly, i've lost my routers pass -_-

The router is most likely the issue then.

Try the serial number on the bottom of the router or no user and admin as the pw.  You can also look up how to reset the router which will reset the password to a default like the examples above.  Just check the manufacturers website.

Hard reset!  Then it's the factory pass usually printed on the bottom.  Of course you'd have to reprogram all your settings on it again.

I think the issue here is the term IRC channel.  The FS2 Lobby is an IRC channel but can only be used through FS2.  This should always be referred to as the Lobby.  Then you have the HLP IRC channel which can be accessed via IRC client.  Link to that is on the menu bar at the top of this forum.  You can also go to channel #MULTI as well as #HLP.  This is where you will normally find people who might be up for a game.

Hopefully one of these days enough people will be playing again that just going to the Lobby will be enough.

Okay, I confess myself thoroughly defeated by this process.  The problem is the part where I have to create a multiplayer pilot.  When I do this, Freespace insists I'm out of memory even though there's 351GB free on my primary hard drive alone.  (I can create new single player pilots just fine.)  I've put the issue up in Mantis.

Check and see if you have a data\players\multi\inferno directory under you fs2 directory.  If not create it and try again.  Occasionally the directories fail to get created.

In normal circumstances yes, I'm fully aware of that.  But in this context, that would just be nonsensical.

Would like to make sure that instructions referring to the 5.5f launcher get updated to point to the new 5.5g (http://swc.fs2downloads.com/files/Launcher55g.zip) one.  It fixes some issues with the new OpenAL settings to work properly with nightly builds and I don't want the broken 5.5f one to become any more commonplace than it already is.  I've already updated the 3.6.12 release thread, Nightly FAQ, and any Wiki pages I can find, plus the SCP website.   Thanks.

Hey guys, need a bit of help here. I'm trying to play with a friend of mine and the only part I'm having trouble with is port forwarding because I have a different router. That, and I've never fully understood port forwarding.  I have a Linksys router so my screen looks completely different from the screenshots. Would appreciate it if anyone out there can help out.

Linksys either has a tab called Port Forwarding, or perhaps just Applications and Gaming, that's what my WRT54GS calls it.

Right, I've been messing around with it there. Two questions, do you know if the port range has to be the same ports? Meaning Start and End both at 7808 and 7117 in two separate rows? Or am I supposed to use only one row start at 7808 and end at 7117? I'm trying the former right now.

Second question, how do I know what IP address to use? Thanks in advance to anyone that answers.  :doubt:

Your current setup is correct.  Otherwise, you'd have to do the range 7117 to 7808 and that would forward _all_ ports in between as well, you don't want that.

You want to use the IP your computer is currently set to.  It should be something like 192.168.1.xxx probably, could be 192.168.0.x, or 10.10.x.x, etc.  If it's assigned by your router dynamically, you may have to update that page when it changes.  Or, you might be able to set your router to reserve a certain IP for your computer, but that's a bit complicated to set up.  Easier would be to pick a number outside of the range your router assigns, and manually set that on your computer, but then you have to unset it if it's a laptop that you move around a lot.  Too much for me to type up instructions for, use google or read the router manual or such for more help.

Thanks for the help, though I think I've found the right IP and gotten that part set up correctly, for some reason I still can't play with my friend. I followed the Multiplayer Getting Started guide as did my friend but for some reason my game never shows up in his server list even though it shows up on the FS2NET site. Same problem when he tries to host. I also can't join any other servers when they're up, it just takes me to the Create Server screen when I try. Weird.

We tried a Direct IP connection first but that didn't work either. Same problem, the server just doesn't show up and we did everything in the Direct IP Specific Settings of the guide. I'm not even sure what to ask anymore.  :doubt:

I'm sure someone has asked this somewhere in this forum, but I can't find it, so, here goes nothing.

I played FreeSpace YEARS ago on-line, but haven't any multi-player experience - so no instincts re set-up.

Initially, I would like to set up to play across the three computers on our LAN, so my boys & I can get up to speed, enjoy playing each other as well as, eventually all go multiplayer on-line with you.

What (if any) different setup procedures are required to 'host' across our LAN as opposed to going on-line?

Thanks, and sorry for being an ALM (Annoying Little Man).

Well there are 2 ways to play on a lan.  Direct IP games where one computer is the host and the others connect.  The second is just going through FS2netD just like you would for online multiplayer.  Direct IP won't save stats or anything but is easier to setup on a LAN.  You just turn off PXO and enter the local IP of the host machine on the clients.  Now since you are planning on going online at some point it might be better to just do that now.  The issue you are going to run into is with port forwarding (assuming each machine doesn't have a global IP address.  if it does no problems).  You will need to follow the instructions to setup the host machine.  Now the clients are going to be a bit tricky.  If your lucky you can just force port on them to 7809 and 7810 in the launcher (setup those ports as well when you do the host).  If your not lucky I really am unsure.

why would you need two routers? if there are two players wanting to play, and one hosts, the one that hosts needs to open up the ports on the router.

if you have a fancy schmancy split network with two incoming internet links, it means you also have two globally accessible ip addresses. the not-too-smart way would be just to open up the ports on both routers. the smart way would be to make sure that all FSO traffic goes over one router in both way (incoming and outgoing) and not the other router.

if you have one router after the other, please disconnect one of them completely, hook up the rest of your network to the one you want to keep and beat yourself to death with the other one for being an idiot.

Actually, it seems you can shotgun broadband connections like you used to with modems and ISDN back in the day.  If you can get two DSL lines from one provider for instance, you might be able to get them to use one IP over both lines.  You'd have to talk with your ISP probably to get that set up though.

By my understanding it wouldn't be too hard to say... have one of the 3 on the LAN host a game (on pxo), have the 2 other direct IP in, have anyone else online join from there. This may lead to routing problems though, and the 2 that direct ip in won't get their stats saved.

Would direct IP linking to say, a standalone require port forwarding, or is that a fs2net thing? The logic behind this being if it uses a random port it shouldn't be difficult to link 3 people from a LAN. fs2net could be watched for an IP, meet on IRC to set it up, etc. But again there is the stat saving issue, not to mention pumping three times the data down a single line.

What routing problems, pray tell? The game tracks via ip addresses. those from the global net trying to join, get forwarded to the pc, and the local clients simply skip that whole nasty NAT part.

same logic as normal multi. the difference being, if direct-ip-ing you just know the ip address you are connecting to.

wat? three times the data down a single line? only if none of them host and all three connect to an external server. if any of the potential trio host, the overall link bandwith went down a bit (at least in the direction of the global net...)

also, your average host has more bandwith eaten than your hypothetical trio.
so, yeah, almost any sort of a link, post 256kbps up/down shouldnt have much problems at all on that front.

Yeah, there's probably no need for a setup like that for online gaming.  There's no online games that make use of even one high-speed connection, and having two isn't going to help your latency.  The shotgunning overhead is probably more likely to have an adverse effect.

No. You don't get how it is. I have ADSL, and as fate would have it, the modem is also a router. But my parents have a laptop and they want internet access too. So we got a cisco wireless N-router as well.

Don't blame me for decisions my parents made. Now can you help?

There is a way usually to enter the setup of the modem / router... you have to find it's Default Gateway, which should be different from your Wireless N router's default gateway.

For example, your N router may have a default gateway of 192.168.1.1 , whilst your modem may have 192.168.10.1

How to find it?  Hmm..

I think if you do a tracert from the cmd line, it should give you the IP of your modem (2nd IP in the list, the first is your N-Router)

Not sure of that though.  Try it and see if you can connect to the 2nd IP

start

type cmd (or for XP Run then cmd)

hit enter

put

Code: [Select]
tracert www.google.com
and enter

EDIT: then put the 2nd IP into your web browser and see if your modem config page shows up

I already know how to get into both routers.

The modem/router is 192.168.2.1

and the wireless cisco router is 192.168.1.1

If I forward the ports on one, the other, or both, it still doesn't work. Well, at least uTorrent says the ports aren't open anyway. And I couldn't host on StarCraft I battle.net when that was still up after I forwarded ports. And I can't host a game when I'm playing with my friend on Diablo II. Same thing with Baldur's Gate. The only thing I can host is Left4Dead 1 & 2, and I never forwarded those ports.

Now, I searched on the internet yesterday for Port Forwarding with Two Routers. And I found out it's complicated. I found this:

http://portforward.com/help/doublerouterportforwarding.htm

Now, Jeremiah told me that the IP addresses I know are the internal IPs. Since I have two routers, it sets up a subnet or something between the two routers, and we need their external IPs. And I don't know how to get that.

And even if I did, I still don't understand what I'm supposed to do.

I need someone to walk me through it.

Oh, and there's an easier way, boy.
You go to the command prompt and you type in
Code: [Select]
ipconfig /all

Your modem needs to forward ports to your router... so the IP that needs forwarding for the port number should be 192.168.1.1  Now the port is forwarded to the N-Router.

Now, have the N-Router forward that port to your computer's IP

Which is dynamic, that is, DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) auto-assigns it.  So you need to assign one manually.  Google how to do it with your OS.  set your computer's IP to something like 192.168.1.25 (and the Default Gateway is the IP of your N-Router, and the subnet mask will be 255.255.255.0 ) so that DHCP doesn't auto-assign another computer to be the same as your manual configuration.

For the DNS servers, I'd put 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 (Google's DNS servers; they're a bit faster than your ISP's ones usually).

Now, have your N-Router forward the ports to 192.168.1.25

Ta-da!

Well, you also have to set your computer's software firewall to allow those ports... Google that as well.

EDIT: Basically, what you are doing is saying:

1) Hey modem, forward any incoming requests on TCP (or UDP if that's what is being used) port xxxx to IP 192.168.1.1

*port requests from FS2 are forwarded to your N-Router's IP and your N-Router gets them*

2)Hey N-Router, forward any incoming requests on TCP (or UDP) port xxxx to IP 192.168.1.25

*port requests from FS2 are forwarded to your computer's (static) IP 192.168.1.25*

3a)Hey computer, instead of asking for your IP to be assigned to you by the DHCP server on the device you are connected to (in this case, the N-Router), I want you to have these settings so that you will always be available when the N-Router sends FS2 port requests to 192.168.1.25:

-Your IP on the little N-Router network will be 192.168.1.25
-Your subnet mask (complicated, but it basically makes the IPs match the correct network setup by telling where the split the network IP and the subnetwork IP addresses) will be 255.255.255.0
-Your Default Gateway on this network is 192.168.1.1 (this is the router's IP address, basically, if you can't find what your looking for, ask this guy to find it... so when you put www.google.com, and the IP is retrieved by DNS, and you try to find that IP on the network... well, Google.com isn't on your home network, so ask the Default Gateway to find it for you... then the N-Router can't find it on the modem network, so it asks IT'S Default Gateway, 192.168.2.1, which is your modem, to find it.  This process is repeated on your ISP's network all the way up until Google.com's IP address is contacted.)
-Your DNS servers are going to be Google's DNS servers: a) primary IP 8.8.8.8 and b) secondary IP 8.8.4.4  (this means that when you put in www.hotmail.com or similar, the address needs to be converted into the correct IP address, so ask the DNS server "what is the IP for www.hotmail.com?" -- it will then give you the current IP address of www.hotmail.com, which your computer then uses to load www.hotmail.com)

normally, DHCP assigns all of these options.  Ultimately, the DNS servers end up being auto-assigned to your ISP's DNS servers... not always as fast as Google's DNS servers, in addition, some sites that your ISP doesn't like may be blocked.  If you want to use your ISP's DNS servers, google what they are for your ISP, and put in those values here

3b)Hey Firewall, allow requests on TCP (or UDP) port xxxx to be accepted on my system; don't block them

*TCP or UDP port requests are now received by FS2, and much joy results*

So when I forward from the modem to the router is that LAN to LAN or WAN to LAN?
Title: Re: 3.6.12 Multiplayer Setup, Schedule, and other Info V0.9 CURRENT AS OF Aug 19TH
Post by: jr2 on August 26, 2011, 12:59:13 pm
I think WAN to LAN.... basically, it needs to be forwarded from the "Internet" to your LAN (the network created for your N-Router by the modem... there is another separate LAN (Local Area Network) created for all the computers that the N-Router has connected to it)

If your modem considers the Internet to be your "WAN" (Wide Area Network), then yes, WAN to LAN...

EDIT: BTW, read my edit of my post above your last one.

EDIT2: Also, I forgot to mention (although you can infer it from my posts) that a static IP address is one that is pre-set by the computer (in this case, 192.168.1.25)  A dynamic IP address is one that is auto-selected by the DHCP server on the network (in this case, your N-Router since the computer is on it's network)  ... if you set your computer to DHCP, then the N-Router will set it to the first available network on the 192.168.1.0 network, which would be 192.168.1.1... however, the router itself has that IP, so it would be 192.168.1.2; so you could forward ports to that IP... but what if your parent's laptop, or your iPod Touch, connects first??  Now that device has 192.168.1.2, and your FS2 port requests go to the iPod!  :ick: no good~  So you set a static IP that is far enough above the DHCP starting range that it will not be selected by DHCP (.25 is good, if you had 20-30 devices, well set .50)

Interestingly, note that if you managed to plug your computer into the modem's 192.168.2.1 network if there were multiple ports that you could use, the modem DHCP would set 192.168.2.2 if that was available (but maybe your N-Router took that... the networks can have IP addresses that are local to their specific network, so your N-Router could be 192.168.2.2 on the modem network and 192.168.1.1 on it's own network... it's a ... Gateway.  ;)

If any network guys that know better than me read this, feel free to correct any discrepancies, however I think I mostly summarized how the networks work in a broad sense.

If you have a Westech modem like we got, you can disable its ability to get the IP from your ISP.  It will then just simply pass through data to your wireless router, which should itself be able to do PPPoE.  That's the setup I have, but you might need to call your ISP for help.  I have a Westech modem configured to pass through to my Netgear OpenWRT router.  That's your optimal setup, if you can do it.  Then your wireless router handles the authentication with your username and password to your ISP, and gets the external IP assigned to it directly.

Short of that, you might just be able to open up all ports on your modem by setting up a DMZ to the wireless router.  Opening ports by hand is silly when you want everything to go to the wireless router.  Should be a way to make that happen since I'm sure it's a common request.

You can indeed shut the firewall option completely off on most routers... then all port requests will pass through to your N-Router, which will handle all port requests (you'd still need to forward the port on to your computer though).

Still no luck with uTorrent. Says the port's not open.

However, I did go to my modem/router and go to WAN and it has something about a static IP. It's set to "Obtain an IP address automatically." So is that the router's IP address or is the modem/router manipulating MY ip address?

EDIT: It also has a setting called "mode."

It is set to "routing." If I change that from routing to bridge, will that make my modem/router not act as a router and then I won't have to worry about forwarding ports on that device?

I think Bridge is what you want, and would probably simplify your setup greatly.  You'd just need to configure your Wifi router as PPPoE instead of just DHCP for its WAN setting, and plug in your ISP username and password, domain etc as required.  You'd never need to worry about port forwarding at all on your modem/router then.

My internet didn't work anymore after that, so I changed it back.

Then I went on google and looked up "site:www.centurylink.com static ip" and I found this:

Static IP addresses are available with CWB and may be ordered using the Account Management Tool after the CWB service installation order has been fully completed. You are responsible for all Static IP activity on your CWB accounts, whether initiated by you or the end-user.

Does that mean I can't get a static IP address unless I pay for it?

Yup, depending on the ISP static IPs could cost $5 or more extra per month.
Also, 192.168.* is local IP only, not an internet IP, so you would have lost internet connection anyway.

If you are going for port forwarding, then the modem's IP doesnt need to change, (or atleast not the WAN one). The computer's IP needs to change to meet the port forwarding settings of the router.

You don't need a static IP.  You just need to set your modem to use Bridge mode and configure your wifi router for PPPoE.  If you want a static method of getting to your computer, you can try DynDNS.  Your wifi router probably supports auto-updating it when your IP changes.

I can't bridge my router because I can't set up PPPoE on the Linksys because I don't know the ISP Username and Password.

Be very careful when talking about Static IPs. If you're doing port forwarding you may want your PC to have a static IP address. This is a very different thing from calling up your ISP and asking them for your internet to have a static IP address.

You want your computers on the network to have private static IPs if possible, which can be done either on the computer itself, or on the wifi router by setting up DHCP to always assign the same IP to certain MAC addresses.  I prefer the latter, especially with laptops because then I don't need to reset my laptop's wifi settings when I go from home to somewhere else.

The difference is, remember how I said that IP addresses can be specific to the sub-networks?  Well, that's all well and fine in your N-Router network or your (separate) modem/router network.  However, the Internet only sees the IP that your ISP sets for your modem, which is usually dynamic (meaning it can change)... however, you don't have to worry about that.  The only thing you need to worry about is static IPs for your computers in your own little N-Router network, which you said you took care of already.

HANG ON! I went into my modem/router, clicked on WAN, went down to IP Address, clicked on static IP, and put in 192.168.1.100

Yeah, that would be because your N-Router had its default gateway setting detected as 192.168.2.1 (modem's previous IP).

power cycling your N-Router would have fixed your Internet, as it would have detected your Modem/Router's new address of 192.168.1.100... except, you run into this problem: 192.168.1.100 is an IP that can potentially exist on your N-Router network.  Oopsie, so now your N-Router would be trying to ask the (non-existent) 192.168.1.100 computer on it's own network (the LAN jacks and wireless form that network) for any IP request that doesn't exist on the local network (in otherwords, www.google.com etc).  The reason that you might want to do this:  Say you've got a computer with two ethernet jacks... one connects to your N-Router (call it eth0), the other to your modem (call it eth1).  You have set Internet connection sharing from the eth1 (modem, connected to Internet) to eth0 (N-Router network).  Now computers requesting Internet sites will be redirected to 192.168.1.100, which would be your dual-ethernet computer.  This could be useful for advanced firewalling, having a local copy of data (which you would access by setting up a server service (sorry, no pun intended) on the dual jacked computer.

I'm sorry if this is all confusing.  But that's why 192.168.1.100 wouldn't work.  You should have put your modem to 192.168.2.100 (which cannot exist on the 192.168.1.0 network) and restarted your N-Router so that it would detect the difference in the default gateway IP and connect.

EDIT: BTW:

Router = connects two networks, keeping them separate

Bridge = combines two networks into one network

(Anyone that's certified in this, please correct me if I have my facts wrong.)

Why would you want to?
I don't think some of the scripting material added into the .12mvps mods work on .10 builds, you would get the models though I guess.

You should probably just use .14 when it's released.

Yeah, you should only use .10 if you really enjoy having lots of bugs.

Y am I unable to host?
Ok so me and my bud have been trying to play a PXO game for WEEKS now. I tried forwarding my ports, direct IP, but nothing works except for putting up a Stand Alone server, and I don't have another computer just sitting around. The only thing I can think of doing is finding a way to somehow make a server, kinda like Minecraft, but I can't find any info on that.... If anyone's got any ideas tell me. He can't see my servers at all...
,Mariomix

Oh and yeah I do have the patch I'm supposed to have... .-.
5.5g Launcher
3.6.14 RC4 Freespace open .exe's
3.6.12 MediaVp's

If you're forwarding ports from a router, it should be the only firewall you need.  You can therefore disable Windows firewall if you haven't already, as it really just gets in the way.  I only mention it because you didn't, just being thorough.  Hop on #MULTI some time and I can try to connect to you while I'm at work possibly.

Sorry for my English,
1) What is a server at the moment (babylon-project, Zathras)?
2) Is it possible to set up a server (babylon-project, Zathras) 24/7

For 2), are you asking if it is possible to set up a dedicated server yourself, or are you asking for someone here to do it?

I asked the server might need somebody, yes, the mood of the dedicated server itself. Maybe a little bit interested in going over the nuances in the configuration.

I literally have no idea what I'm doing as far as this "port forwarding" business is concerned. I have a Linksys E1200 and I can get to my settings page, but the OP's walkthrough is pretty vague.

Try this Linksys router port forwarding (http://forum.synology.com/wiki/index.php/Manual_Port_Forwarding_with_a_Linksys_Router#Enabling_Port_Forwarding_on_a_Linksys_Router) guide.  Might help.

You should be able to find instructions for your specific router model from portforward.com (they will try to sell you a program to do it for you... if you want, but I haven't ever used it.  Just go to the guide section and go by model number)

So you filled out the sixth and seventh rows something like:

Freespace (1) | 7117 | 7117 | Both | 192.168.1.<your computer's IP> | X
Freespace (2) | 7808 | 7808 | Both | 192.168.1.<your computer's IP> | X

Then hit Save Settings, and it didn't change anything?

Dunno if it would help, but there is an updated firmware it seems, 2.0.03.  I wouldn't do that unless you're desperate though, don't want to brick your router.

Hello. I got Freespace 2 some months ago and got the whole shabang (FSO installer, wxlauncher and even compiled my own fs2_open build since I use Linux Mint Debian). So I can't wait to play some matches online.

I have some question though.

1. I have the multiplayer voice pack and validated missions in a mod folder called "multimissions". Do I put the content of the official Volition patch into that folder?
2. (linux build related): how can I make my online account data persisent in the game? I have to enter my name and pw everytime I wanna join the servers.
3. Do I get stats, also when I play with the media vps enabled?

Thanks in advance.

Multi missions and voice pack are the exception to the "don't put GPS in the root folder" rule.  Those and the volition patch should all be in your Freespace 2 folder.

Please file a mantis bug for the pxo account info issue, I saw it happening on OSX but thought it was just me until now.

Head to the Mantis page here (http://scp.indiegames.us/mantis/); you'll have to register an account, which should be (theoretically) simple enough.  Once you're set there, you'll be able to file a bug report, which has a bunch of different information categories you can fill in.  Just give as much detail as you're able; you shouldn't need a whole lot to start off for this one, since it's a basic "this info isn't saving" issue.

Ok, I've commented on #2750 (http://scp.indiegames.us/mantis/view.php?id=2750).  After a little more testing on my end, I realized it's wxLauncher eating the info saved to the fs2_open.ini file, not FS2_Open itself.  So we'll be closing the Mantis bug and opening a bug (https://code.google.com/p/wxlauncher/issues/detail?id=97&thanks=97&ts=1355175201) on wxL's bug tracker.  Thanks for reporting it though, I needed to be sure my OS X problem was the same as what you were describing, and I didn't have time to follow up on the problem until today anyway :)

Siechtum, I posted in the Mantis ticket (http://scp.indiegames.us/mantis/view.php?id=2750) about a patch I made that's in the wxLauncher bug report (http://code.google.com/p/wxlauncher/issues/detail?id=97) about this bug. Could you test the patch?

You'll need to check out wxLauncher from trunk if you haven't already. The readme (http://code.google.com/p/wxlauncher/source/browse/ReadMe.txt#110) has the instructions on how to do it. The LMDE/Debian repos probably have a Mercurial client you can use.

You can then apply the patch by moving it to your wxLauncher folder and running this command:

Code: [Select]
hg patch --no-commit fix_fs2openini_updating.patch

Once you've tested it, could you post your results in the wxLauncher bug report if you have a Google account, or here if you don't have a Google account?

Thanks.

Hi, I'm new to FS2 and just got the game from GOG.

I want to play online and followed the instructions correctly I think, in PXO there is only 1 channel called Eleh. Does that sound like I've done everything right?

When are people online?

Thanks  :)

If you got on to the lobby you're most of the way there, final check would probably be to make sure you're using both the right version of the EXE (either the most current nightly, or the most current stable release, realistically) and that you definitely have port 7808 open if you want to host or host on stand alones servers (meaning; joining a server with 0 players to 'start' a game).

Playing times are a tiny bit random, you may find games in the week, you may not. You will most probably find games on the EU evening-early morning time period, and most especially on fridays and saturdays.
I've been ridiculously busy with real life(tm) the last couple months so I haven't been around enough to even know the true answer to that question right now, but multi is at the quietest it's been since I returned to these forums (4 years?), hoping there will be new life at some point, you may be able to muster people up to play with via a forum thread or on #hard-light on irc. There are people out there who want to play at least semi-regularly, trust me.

Everything you've stated here does not work at all for me. The first problem with this whole system is there are like 2-3 different "DO THIS" pages floating around here. Each one says something different. The second thing is all of your files look a lot different than mine and I downloaded everything from here. This is why this game never reached a lot of players after it was canned because it's too complicated to get everything running.

Well, first of all, as long as someone can host successfully, joining a game isn't usually all that hard.  Shouldn't involve messing with routers or anything like that, just having the mod installed correctly.  Hosting is another issue though, I'll admit, and UPnP, if/when it gets merged, might help with that.

What about making use of a virtual LAN service like Evolve? Works great for setting up multiplayer matches in Starfleet Command 2 Community Edition. At that point, it's just a matter of setting up a standard TCP/IP LAN game.
