(re)RELEASE: 3.6.10 Media VPs - 9th of August 2009 versions
RELEASE: Patch - 24th of August 2009
IMPORTANT:
- This set of MVPs will be validated (and therefore are the only ones that will allow you to save your stats) for multiplayer using 3.6.10 builds!
- The previous release of 3.6.10 MVPs (9th of December 2008, with the files being last modified on the 8th) is now obsolete and all but MV_Music should be deleted and replaced with these newer versions!
- MV_Complete is no longer an option due to various problems with supporting such a large file. If you have MV_Complete.vp currently, please be sure to delete it!
Step 1: Ensure you have a working installation of Freespace 2
The MediaVPs require a working installation of retail Freespace 2. If you do not have the retail Freespace 2, it can be purchased from Good Old Games for $6 USD: http://www.gog.com/en/gamecard/freespace_2
Step 2: Get the latest 3.6.10 and Launcher
- fs2_open 3.6.10 final (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,64520.0.html)
- The latest version of the launcher is Launcher 5.5e (http://fs2source.warpcore.org/exes/Launcher55e.zip). For Launchers for non-windows operating systems, please check the 3.6.10 release post (through the above link) for the appropriate files.
Both the fs2_open_3_6_10.exe and Launcher.exe should be placed in your root Freespace2 install folder. ie: "C:\Games\FreeSpace2"
IMPORTANT:
- It's a good idea at this point to also copy fs2_open_3_6_10d.exe into your root Freespace2 install folder in case you later on encounter problems you need to ask about on the forums. This is because the debug builds will create the all important "fs2_open.log" file in "C:\Games\FreeSpace2\data" that should always be included in such posts. For more information, please check (all posts!) in The Freespace Troubleshooting FAQ (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,56279.0.html) thread in the Freespace and Freespace Open Support Forum (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/board,151.0.html)
Step 3: Set up the mediavps mod directory
If it does not already exist, create a new folder called "mediavps" in your Freespace 2 install folder, and place the MV_*.vp files in there.
So, if you installed Freespace 2 to "C:\Games\FreeSpace2" then you would place these Media VP files into "C:\Games\FreeSpace2\mediavps"
IMPORTANT:
- If your mediavps directory does already exist, then it probably has some old VPs and other bits and pieces in it. Delete or move (completely out of the FS directory structure) ALL these old files, leaving you with an empty mediavps folder.
- Delete all previous 3.6.10 VP files dated 8th of December 2008 except MV_Music (which remains unchanged)
- Especially delete MV_COMPLETE.VP, as having everything in one VP file turned out to be quite problematic
Step 4: Configure the launcher flags
- Open the launcher and go to the MOD tab and click "Select MOD". From here select the 'mediavps' folder and click ok.
- Go to the "Features" tab to activate the specific features FSO offers. The recommended settings are:
==> Graphics List:
Enable Specular
Enable Glowmaps
Enable Environment Maps
Apply Lighting to Missiles
Enable 3D Shockwaves (Personal preference) (switches shockwaves from always facing the camera to spawning with random orientations)
==> Gameplay List:
Enable 3D Warp
Enable Flash on Warp (Personal preference) (switches on a simple flare effect that flashes when a subspace vortex opens and closes)
==> In the "Custom Flags field" copy & paste (Without the quotes):
"-ambient_factor 35 -ogl_spec 20 -spec_exp 15 -spec_point 1.2 -spec_static 1.5 -spec_tube 1.5"
(Note, any of these settings and the others in the lists can be tweaked as desired. See the Wiki Page on Launcher Flags (http://www.hard-light.net/wiki/index.php/Command-Line_Reference) for more information on each one)
Step 5: Download the 3.6.10 MediaVPs themselves!
Place all the contents of these ZIP files straight into your "mediavps" mod folder. (Be sure you're not just dumping zip files in there! FSO can't read zips. :p )
[DOWNLOAD OPTION 1] - Single Zip containing everything in individual VPs:
IMPORTANT: This does not include the 3610_Patch.vp, see below!
- 3.6.10-Total.zip
FSMods (http://www.freespacemods.net/files/MVP3610/3.6.10-Total.zip) ;; Mirror (http://173.8.193.66:7701/svn/MediaVPs/3610/3.6.10-Total.zip) ;; Torrent File (http://173.8.193.66:7701/svn/MediaVPs/3610-Total.torrent)
OR
[DOWNLOAD OPTION 2] - Single Zip containing everything except MV_Advanced, still in individual VPs:
IMPORTANT: This does not include the 3610_Patch.vp, see below!
- 3.6.10-Full.zip
FSMods (http://www.freespacemods.net/files/MVP3610/3.6.10-Full.zip) ;; Mirror (http://173.8.193.66:7701/svn/MediaVPs/3610/3.6.10-Full.zip) ;; Torrent File (http://173.8.193.66:7701/svn/MediaVPs/3610-Full.torrent)
OR
[DOWNLOAD OPTION 3] - The individual component VPs:
- MV_Core.vp (Minimum required for running FSO); Also contains the mod.ini, FSU-MVP.bmp and Readme.txt

- MV_Effects.vp

- MV_Advanced.vp (For users with higher end machines, this package contains many significantly more demanding textures and effects that may cause poor performance on low end machines)
FSMods (http://www.freespacemods.net/files/MVP3610/MV_Advanced.zip) ;; Mirror (http://173.8.193.66:7701/svn/MediaVPs/3610/MV_Advanced.zip)
Step 6: Download the 3.6.10 Patch
Once again place all the contents of these ZIP files straight into your "mediavps" mod folder alongside the above VPs.
THE PATCH
- 3610_Patch.vp: Contains fixes for the current (re)Release 3.6.10 MediaVPs
FSMods (http://freespacemods.net/files/MVP3610/3610_Patch.zip) ;; Mirror (http://173.8.193.66:7701/svn/MediaVPs/3610/3610_Patch.zip) ;; RapidShare (http://rapidshare.com/files/271881426/3610_Patch.vp) ;; MegaUpload (http://www.megaupload.com/?d=HUZ2SBTS)
Step 7: Play and enjoy! Also, please report any bugs you come across to the FSU Mantis! (http://www.hard-light.net/mantis/view_all_bug_page.php)
IMPORTANT: Known Issues
- In debug builds upon entering the Ship Lab or Techroom you get:
Assert: !resize
File: gropengltexture.cpp
Line: 622
and FS then crashes. The issue is that the cubemap used here does not have mip-maps and so on any non-DX10 capable it may crash. A fixed CubeMap.dds file is here: http://www.mediafire.com/?dyejkjlqmm3 which should be placed in \mediavps\data\effects, creating any folders that don't exist already.
- Upon starting the mission "Training 4" (the mission after you were chasing the Iceni), you get the error:
Error: Invalid ship/wing name.
In sexpression: ( is-destroyed-delay 5 "GTT Argo 01" )
(Error appears to be: GTT Argo 01)
File: MissionParse.cpp
Line: 6096
This is because somehow you downloaded the re-released MediaVPs but missed the patch! So the solution is to just make sure you have the '3610_Patch.vp' file in your mediavps mod folder with all the others and it all should work again.
Non-Essential Information
Original thread is now a Discussion Thread (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,58230.0.html)
Additional VP Downloads:
For those of you wanting to use the MV_Advanced but don't care for the Animated Glow Maps, here is a VP that will turn them off:
- MV_AbolishAnimGlows.vp
FSMods (http://www.freespacemods.net/files/MVP3610/MV_AbolishAnimGlows.zip) ;; Mirror (http://173.8.193.66:7701/svn/3610/MV_AbolishAnimGlows.zip)
VP Hashes and download integrity:
A CRC/Hashes file for the Zips and their VPs can be found here: (Right-Click, "Save As")
FSMods (http://www.freespacemods.net/files/MVP3610/crcs.txt) ;; Mirror (http://173.8.193.66:7701/svn/MediaVPs/3610/crcs.txt)
You can use a tool such as hashtab (http://beeblebrox.org/hashtab/) or the plugin for Firefox (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/8404) to generate the hashes of the files as you get them to ensure they were downloaded intact. As the VPs are now in Zip files, the Installer has been updated to the newer file links, and should be usable again.
All of the files have been downloaded and checked multiple times now, and have passed Hash checking and decompression.

**SUPPORT NOTICE**
While we took every effort we could to make gameplay as smooth and as rewarding as possible in this release, some things are always a matter of personal taste. Some people may feel creatively inclined to modify the resources within these VP's to their own ends. And as this is an open community project, you are certainly free to do so. But when it comes to the MediaVP's themselves, we cannot bug-fix or troubleshoot anything involving custom or modified content that was not created by the team for a specific effect (EG: The Abolish VP's.) So, to best facilitate fixes and future work, please only report issues with non-modified content.
