Title: Running Freespace 2 On Vista?
Post by: Tantalus53 on August 23, 2009, 08:16:35 pm
Well i have a problem. Whenever i try to run Fs2 on Vista, it allays scales down the screen. Now, as some modders might know, some effects wont show up below a certain screen resolution, and because my screen is small, All the pretty stuff for the mod I'm a part of.. I cant see. Only realized when i compared a screen shot i took, with a member of Omega.

Can anyone help me? It would be much appreciated.

You need to run the launcher as an administrator - right click and then select 'Run as Administrator'.
Then change all the settings you want, and then click 'Apply'

After that you don't really need to use the launcher (unless you want to change mod, which doesn't seem to require 'Run as Administrator').

We're working on fixing this issue, but it's complicated by some compatibility issues that we need to work through.

Eh.. I ran it as an administrator, but, im still getting in a smaller-than-set form. I do get an error i never got before. Something along the lines of "Cant understand 'Videocardfs2Open' configuration file."

Have you tried compatibility options?

Where do i find 'em and what do i do with 'em? (is a noob when it comes to anything outside FRED)

Well, wait... I'm not sure we were considering the same thing... What's the actual total resolution of your screen? I can't think of any new computer having less the 1024x768 resolution...

And yes, for FSO the 5.5e launcher should have the appropriate video options listed. If you get serious problems, right click on the appropriate application and select "compatibility options." You might want to try running in Win XP options...

...However, I still don't quite comprehend your problem. Can you better describe the screen being "scaled down?"

Well, a picture is worth a thousand words.

These are my current Video settings for FS2
(http://i178.photobucket.com/albums/w259/BetaHydri/Launcher.jpg)

And when i run it (run in window enabled to show what i mean) it looks like this in the center of my screen (exactly this size) and the rest of the screen is black.

Screen is currently set to 1200x800, i think.

Well... That's different!

I'd like for you to check something for me: go to your control panel and find the "Personalization" icon. Double-click on it. Then, go to the display options tab. Click on it as well. Check to see what your maximum resolution is. If your monitor is not at full resolution, set it to full resolution. Then go back to the launcher and set the settings to reflect your monitor's maximum resolution. See if that works. If it doesn't, we'll figure something else out.

...I think I understand those poor telephone help technicians now... I feel your frustration.

If this isn't solved by the time I get hope I might be able to help you. I have Vista too, and my FSO runs like a hot chick.

I think you need to set the game resolution to the resolution that windows vista is running at. Same as what Thaeris said I think.

Post by: FUBAR-BDHR on August 23, 2009, 11:34:11 pm
Except for the fact he said he only turned on run in window for the screen shot.

I'm wondering if there is an option for the shortcut to run at a specified resolution or something.  I know XP has the run normal/minimized/maximized for shortcuts.

Normally, this should work.
Run the Launcher with admin privileges, make the resolution settings, and let it do its job. And instead of clicking "Run", click on "Apply" before.

Have you tried compatibility options?

-Thaeris

In general, FSOpen doesn't need to be run in compatibility mode.

I think you need to set the game resolution to the resolution that windows vista is running at. Same as what Thaeris said I think.

Actually, no. FS2Open will run at any resolution you specify.

Now, Tantalus, I'm assuming you downloaded 3.6.10 from the release thread recently, as well as the Launcher. If not, please do so again; There were some issues with the first release of the 5.5e Launcher that would cause an error like this.

Dekker, no offense here, but did you read the thread? He did that ON PURPOSE.

but did you read the thread?

Pre work, quick scan. Obviously missied it. :p

Vista hits me with this too when i try to run it at 320 x 240.

Ill try these suggestions later when i get back from school. Hopefully something works.

Another thing to check would be if you have game compatibility modes with vista activated. Right click on the 3.6.10 exe, select properties and you should see it, and I would uncheck the boxes if they are checked. Sorry if you looked at this already.

Title: Re: Running Freespace 2 On Vista?

....Since when does FSOpen require compatibility mode?

It doesn't, but he may have it set that way. It could explain the small screen if he has 640X800 box checked.
Title: Re: Running Freespace 2 On Vista?
Post by: Stormkeeper on August 24, 2009, 06:49:52 pm
So I checked ... And I have no idea what caused his problem. My Launcher is the 5.5e one, doesn't run in compatibility, runs fine. Although I may need to tweak the light settings...

I must have been considering retail FS, in which compatibility mode might help you out. Seeing as that's not the case, you'll not I also dismissed compatibility mode in a post or two after that one... I think...

Okay... Re-downloaded the launcher, check. Checked to make sure both Launcher and Screen resolution is at 1200x800, check. Vista compatibility...

I don't see a box for it, or it on the drop down list... (checked 3_6_X and the launcher to see).

Now whats this about lighting settings?

*also, if you mean the service pack 5 thing, yeah.. tried it.
Title: Re: Running Freespace 2 On Vista?
Post by: The E on August 26, 2009, 07:17:02 pm
First, you don't need any compatibility settings for FSO.

What you should do, however, is run the Launcher with admin privileges, and click the "Apply" button once before starting the game.

If all of that shouldn't work, open the Startmenu, and type regedit into the search field. It should give you access to the registry editor. Use its search function to look for the strin "VideoCardFS2Open". Edit any and all entries with this name (there should be a maximum of two) to use the resolution you wish. Then open the Launcher, DO NOT touch the resolution settings box, and start the game.

This is whats there ATM

"OGL -(1280x800)x32 bit"

If i understand what im looking at, it seems right... So what the hell is wrong with it? O_o
Title: Re: Running Freespace 2 On Vista?
Post by: The E on August 26, 2009, 08:14:03 pm
Did you look for other entries with the same name?

EDIT: Sorry for not remembering this earlier (imagine desks being damaged by impacting heads), but try entering "-res 1280x800" into the Launcher's custom flags field (without the double quotes, of course).

Can you run a debug build with the -res parameter, and post the fs2_open.log?

Code: [Select]
-res
<mythbusters>Well, there's your problem</mythbusters> Untick the "Run at specified resolution" flag in the Launcher's Dev Tools section, and try again. If it doesn't work, run the debug build again, and post the log, this time using code tags. Quote this post to see how they're used.

EDIT: Sorry, I may have been a bit unclear before. Add -res 1280x800 or whatever in the custom flags field and run that with a debug build. (Thanks for reminding me, FUBAR)

Initializing OpenGL graphics device at 800x600 with 32-bit color...

Interesting seems like it's being forced to run at 800x600.  No idea why though.

This might seem like a strange suggestion, but could you try searching around for the older 5.5c or d Launcher and set up your resolution options again?

Looks familiar...

I'de have to go download it from somewhere.. I deleted my last copy of my launcher.

Perhaps i should delete all the mod flags and try to reset them?

I dunno; my thinking is more on "find old Launcher, put on the resolution you wanted to play at (along with those other settings in the tab if you want), then playtest... then if it does work, go add back all the launcher flags you used to have and happy gaming"...

Seeing as it's Vista and the problem looks similar to what I got before I just thought I'd $0.02 and see where it goes even though it might not work... :doubt:
