FreeSpace2D, check it out (What the name says...)
Hello, everybody!

Well, don't know if anybody here remembers me talking about my game, but I've made it ready for a public testing version... Unfortunately, I've wanted to create a good campaign for it and only release it after, but I don't have time for that.
I've worked MUCH on this game, so I hope you guys will like it, even as how little can be seen in the test levels.

The website of the game: http://freespace2d.try.hu

If anybody would like to help me create a QUALITY campaign for it, please PM or e-mail me telling me what could he help with. But in advance, it needs much work and time to it, and not just words like "oh, yea, sure, I'll do that!"... I had some of those already. Of course, whoever helps gets into the credits :)

Re: FreeSpace2D, check it out (What the name says...)
I wanted to but your website is horribly broken!

I don't know what resolution you've engineered it before, but try and make it at least fail gracefully for us 800x600 users!

It shouldn't be too hard because Opera's Fit-to-width re-shapes the website quite nicely.

Not perfectly 'tho - I get the Volition/Interplay etc. swatches on the left and the news/updates text with the clever (but non-functional) FS-style scrollbar on the right... but thats it!

The posts refer to a Download area, but there doesn't appear to be any links anywhere to one, and I couldn't hunt through because of the over-kill use of frames!

I must say the site looks good 'tho - If you can fix it so it works on everything instead of IE @ 1024x768 or whatever it'll be great! :)

Now post a smegging link so I can play it!!! ;)

Re: FreeSpace2D, check it out (What the name says...)
hmm, i played it for a few minutes, pretty good...i wouldnt really mind mouse control though....

i found the shivan gauntlet a little too hard for me. i wonder, did you rip the ships graphics from fs2 or were they done by you?

with some work this can become very good, although it was a considerably nice test release

Re: FreeSpace2D, check it out (What the name says...)
hehe, well, okay ^^
That's that with free hosts... ATW's been badbad nowadays, most it mostly is pretty stabile, but I'm open for alternative providers I guess...
As for the webiste, it's for 1024×768 and up, tested on IE 6, FireFox 1.0 and Opera 8.5 and 9... Sorry, but I consider this about the minimum, and I won't optimize a site for 800×600 as it's annoyingly little for an average 1280×1024 user. Buy a better 15' CRT monitor, they're pretty cheap nowadays :)

Re: FreeSpace2D, check it out (What the name says...)
Right, got home and fired it up on my Windows box in Opera 9.

Now I know why it looked so ****e under my remote Linux box - It uses Flash and you didn't put in any alternative links! (My Linux box doesn't use Flash and runs at 800x600 over VNC... ;))

I was wondering why I was seeing a Mara on my Linux box and an Erinyes here...

But seriously dude, when you get a spare moment, please try and get a handle on gracefully scaling frames and CSS - On my Linux box it looks horrible and on my Windows box (At 1600x1200) it stays all the way to the left with a big white-strip on the right!
And pleaseplease add some backup HTML links for non-Flash users, or at least put a notice that Flash must be used somewhere!

*ahem* enough of the ranting ;)

Had a go on the game - It looks really nice, 'tho it feels like a learning program. ;)
The scrolling is good, smooth. Your sprite handling routines work very well and the controls and sound sync is good :)
And you have accurate collision detection! *swoon*

Suggestions:
It is a little 'on-rails'; That's okay 'tho - Raptor and Xenon 2 had a similar style and were fun games.
I'd zoom everything out a little, or maybe just jack the resolution up one higher - The ships feel a bit too 'big' for the screen size.

If you want a bit of challenge, make movement a bit more free-form - Scale everything down a bit (Or make it run at a higher res) and add mouse control and 360degree turning and movement.

Right button controls thrust, left fires. Maybe space for secondary weapons etc.,.

Depending on how you've coded the scrolling, this might be a lot of work 'tho...

I applaud your effort, it has the groundwork for a pretty good game, just get rid of the "rails"

You need the ability to move up and down the screen as well as side to side, and an alternative fire mode needs to be provided so you can use both missiles and primaries.

Re: FreeSpace2D, check it out (What the name says...)
Okay, what you see there is my work to about 99%...
Xept for the pictures, but ripping those out took quite some work to them as well, so rest asking for a commerchial class game and website...
Ships big? Look at the perseus... Now imagine it even smaller.
360 degree movement? Now think that over... If you want an asteroids clone, then okay, but I don't see anything much fun and diversity in that.
Secondary weapons... I'm kindof lazy to write missile seeking code and rotating all those tornado sprites would take out much from lower end computers :)
And yup, it is a learning proggy, got a 5 (5 is max) for it at school :P

As for the rails... Well, this is the closest I could get to FreeSpace's phisics while having okay gameplay experience too. You're moving continuasly ahead at your maximum speed, so how would you move ahead? Afterburner, been thinking about that, but all of the ship pictures would need to be taken off from their ships and I'd need to code the effect for the afterburner truster, redesign the options menu to be able to set that key too, and you'd get a little effect and sound and could move temporarily ahead some. yaaay...
The topic of the enemy ships going backwards, let's not talk about it, game optimization :D

However as I've adressed, this is just a too big project for me, and I want to look for work soonish, so if we want to get anything good out of this, I will need a couple of SERIOUS ppl who want to help make a QUALITY campaign for it. Othervise this is it, so all of the above new feature thingy is in vain anyway :)

(Wanna tinker with the Website, Cyker? Oh and there are a couple of backgrounds and ships, it puts them on randomly)

Re: FreeSpace2D, check it out (What the name says...)
Ok, I downloaded it and played it.  Fun game, although you really need make up and down movement.  Here are my impressions.

The asteroid level was well done.  It was challenging but not too difficult.
I didn't understand the bomber test.  Nothing happens after you kill the thing (one hit?) and what's with the asteroid?
The boss test was way too hard.  The flak guns were to powerful.  If I missed once I was finished.  I might have missed some vital clue though to beating it because I accidentally installed the game in German.
I like the Shivan gauntlet, even though it's also too difficult.  It would also be nice if it was possible to know the shield and hull strength of enemy fighters.  Kinda like a HUD system.

About 360 movement, I think it would be pretty neat if it turned out something like this game.

Re: FreeSpace2D, check it out (What the name says...)
umm, notice the docs next to the proggy? Well, read the script documentation, then you'll prolly understand the level editor as well :) I'm also available to help you ppl I guess.

As for the levels... Notice the release is called test? :P Those are levels I've used for testing the game :) Also, levels are single language, installing a lang pack will only make the interface and the editors' language diff.

The boss test... Well, that's one of the hardest bosses, so I intended that to be hard :) Put in a Fenris, and yawn some if you wish!

360 - That's totally not anything like this. HUD system... If I wanted to develop the game, I'd add an identifier system and corresponding event system into the script... So for example, you could trigger a certain (out of the chain) even when a certain ship you say blows up. And maybe same for objects, so you could for example create escort missions. However I don't have enough time for that, so that's that :)

Re: FreeSpace2D, check it out (What the name says...)
I've tried that game. Well, I think it'd be just a tiny tad bit hard to make anything controllable, fun which is even close to FreeSpace...

Forgot about the mouse controls. How exactly would you make the ship have acceleration, while controling it with the mouse? :) If I added acceleration to the ship + the mouse control, then everyone would complain that they always fall off the mousepad.

Re: FreeSpace2D, check it out (What the name says...)
Not bad, not bad.... my gripe is that over half the game was still in a foreign language. (Everything except the credits and Gauntlet in fact). Also, the ship moves far too slowly for my liking. I understand you can't make it too easy to dodge blasts, but it seemed to take forever to get the ship outta the way!

Re: FreeSpace2D, check it out (What the name says...)
I made a reasonable mission which involved player in Erinyes with Kayser and NTF wings (2 Loki, then 2 Hercs). After those first two waves the NTC Hellespont (Aeolus) would come in. It was almost impossible to kill, any suggestions on how to make it easier for the player? (I even tried putting a physical object TAC1_1 but it would just speed off into the distance when the player stops for the boss, can you stop that, and will the flak go right through it?).

Re: FreeSpace2D, check it out (What the name says...)
Uuummm, about the aelous, put in the anti-bomber version of the cruiser, that has slower flak cannons, so it could hardly hit the erinyes when it moves, but the anti-fighter shouldn't be a prob with the erinyes eighter :P Flak-phisical object hit detection... Could add I guess. Or even more, should add. I'll add it if I get some serious ppl wanting to help me make a campaign :P

Darkhunter, a Herc 2 is slow. Fly a bloody Astaroth or Horus if you want speed! :D (oh, yea, and all of the missions are pretty doable. I've used harder ones for testing too.)
And if you carefully look at te game, you may notice that your ship is actually moving forward... Until a boss arrives, next to which your ship would stop moving forward. So, in fact an object speed of 20 would make a phisical object stay in place at a boss. Speed of 0 is in fact -20. One just doesn't create levels with a boss on the screen constantly, so it's easier this way :)
Oh, yea, and these are test campaigns, not final ones. Feel free to translate any level you wish tho!
