Hi all, i cant seem to get fso installed! Turey's installer on its own used to work (i have a new computer) but now it seems that now u have to buy fs2 retail first??? I own a copy of fs2 retail but its in storage! Why this change of policy!!? I can see that u have to buy it from Good old games, but it wont accept my credit card cos its the wrong type.

Can anyone send me a free copy of fs2 retail or a link to it? I mean i actually bought the original cd so...

Help me! I wanna play :-(

Turey's FSO Installer works. It still installs FSO.

Because Good Old Games is a legitimate, trustworthy and genuinely awesome company that sells legal, DRM-free digital copies of FS2 at extremely consumer-friendly prices. They are a reliable distributor, so there is no point in spreading the game for free anymore.

Anyone caught posting links to FS2 for download other than an official site such as GoG will be banned. I don't care what bull**** reason they give for it.

You're confusing Libris with Gratis.

Libris = Free Speech
Gratis = Free Beer

Freespace Open is of the first type, in that anyone can modify it and use it for their own (non-commercial) products. The source code for the engine was released, but the assets and the IP still belong to Interplay.

Wait, Wait a second. Freespace is Open Source. So You don't need to pay for it. If so is it braking the License Agreement.

The engine is open source and free, yes. The art assets (models, textures, sounds, music etc.), however, are not.

Yep. Only the source code was freely released to the public. The full game was not. It was previously distributed with the installer only because it was no longer sold, and as such there was no other way to get it - Essentially it was abandonware for a while. But with GOG now selling it at a cheap cost that's no longer the case, and having the art assets up for download can't be defended and would be very prone to legal action as it would directly damage the profits of the rightsholders.

Hey chillout some of u guys.

I've been part of FSO for a long time now. I was just surprised that's all. My retail cds are in storage 300 miles away in a storage unit. I really wanted to play again after moving house recently. GoG DOESNT accept my credit card type. I tried and failed. I was just seeking some help.

Isn't Freespace / the forum supposed to be for fun? Why are some of you taking it so seriously that you upset your very own users / community? Now I'm probably gonna get banned for posting this message... but I feel a little hurt but some of the comments above.

Come on Shade, Karajorma... its ME Flint!! I posted in Multiplayer like I always have cos I see my Freespace experience as Multiplayer and the friends I have made only post there. No need to be abrupt even. Aren't we supposed to be enjoying all this? Im not some sort of spammer

Calm down, calm down.

I don't think you're in danger of getting banned over something like this. It's just that the legality of Freespace is an important issue, one that is easily misunderstood, and now that distributors are distributing again, not to mention Interplay digging their way out of debt, it's more important than ever for people to understand that the game is NOT free: just the Open engine.

And yes, most of the time we do have fun. They're taking this seriously because, well, this is a serious subject.

The quote from me is an old one explaining that I would be banning anyone who posted a link to FS2 ISOs. I didn't say I'd ban someone just for not knowing why they shouldn't ask for them (Well not the first time they ask at least).

I now do understand the legal issues. I haven't played for 4 months cos I was moving house... obviously things have changed since then. I didn't know that Freespace's status had changed from abandonware to re-releaseware. One of the most wondefurful things about the FSO project has been its community spirit / raising a phoenix from the ashes / free, nature.

I'm just upset as to the brusque and abrupt nature of the comments posted. Especially since I'm an old member who's been playing for ages. I've had this before on forums.. people forget that posts are posted by REAL people. I certainly would be polite in real life. Especially if the issue was an important one... to get the point across. At the end of the day this is just a game, one we all play for recreation. We must respect one another!
