He isn't advertising anything that I can see, I could see him viewing the thread for some time after it had appeared, and he appears to have a moderate grasp of the English grammar and vocabulary.

I've seen these bots on wikis, where it's far more obvious they are bots. Don't know what their purpose is really maybe they're trying to appear real before they start spamming.

I am. I was thinking about locking and reporting, but didn't do so. Yet.
It's just that I've seen too many of these "I'm new to this forum. I am interested in game. I hope to learn more from your experiences" things by bots at Game Warden. And regardless of whether he's a bot or not, overly ambiguous threads like these don't really serve any purpose.

Furthermore, this guy hasn't even said he's interested in the game. This post is so generic that it could potentially have been posted on practically any public forum on the internet. This arouses my suspicions just a bit.

You guys why you burn your brains thinking that kind of stuff?, if he/it 's a bot then it will be banned eventually... If not, you are being somewhat rude to a new guy.
And don't come to me with excuses, If I had this kind of response the day I first posted in this forums I would have never come back, being considered a robot is a deal breaker.

@Rodo: it's because the post doesn't seem to show any knowledge of what this forum is about. And in his post, it's entirely possible 'mod' referred to moderators rather than modifications of the game.

Furthermore, the process of spambots getting banned requires that someone notice they're a spambot.

Yeah, we can't ban people just because we _think_ they are bots. They need to spam first.
(On the other hand, people can turn into bots in an instant, witness this thread: http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=68093.0 ). Being suspicious about this is prudent.

as Rodo  says its better to greet the person than what happened here, lets face it the guy got flamed for on his first post which had nothing controversial in it and if it was me I would not be bothered to look on here again.

yes the post was generic but to be honest that is how i tend to start and lets face it it isnt of work for a mod to ban them if they do start spamming

Not flaming: presenting doubts about his humanity. After seeing n + 2 different (but very similar) variants of that generic first post at Game Warden. Never mind the whole internet. I mean if he's a person, and let's assume that he is because otherwise people seem to get too angry, why would he make his first post so generic? So generic that you can't be sure at all that he even knows about FreeSpace. Everything is possible, but that just is rather unlikely.

It is actually. Moderators are incapable of banning users. Administrators would achieve better results at that.
