System specs and launcher configuration, please.

Are you using the Glide video setting? Modern cards don't accept it.

And make sure you're running it in compatibility mode.

Is this from the original discs, or did you buy it from GoG.com?

And the obvious you can always just play FSPort if you have FS2 installed.

...

System specs: What operating system you are using, what processor, how much RAM.

Launcher configuration: You know, the little program that lets you make settings etc. The one that usually opens up before starting the actual game.

System specs can be found in XP in Start\All Programs\Accessories\System Tools\System Information

In the system summery line we want

CPU speed which is the 3 to 4 digit number followed by Mhz on the processor line.  With this number we need the type of processor which is more than likely on a sticker on the front of the computer and will say something like AMD Athlon or Intel Pentium
Total Physical Memory (often just called memory)

from the components section in display we need
Name
Adaptor ram (not essential but would help)
Driver Version.

for example mine would look like
Processor - AMD Athlon 64 2210 Mhz
Memory - 1024.00 MB
Display - NVidia GeForce 6600, 256mb, Driver Version   6.14.11.9107

as for the launcher go into your freespace directory (the path can be found in the property's if you right click on the game icon then run the launcher icon, there should be a tab that says display this is where the glide option is.

am I right in remembering glide as a holdover from the old Voodoo cards?

At the time FS1 was released, Glide was actually one of the premier 3D APIs. Neither OpenGL nor Direct3D were quite "there" yet. Besides, Voodoo cards still had a sizable market share back then.

CPU Speed is  2992 Mhz and processor Intel Pentium 4
Total Physical Memory 1,024.00 MB

Adapter RAM 224.00 MB
Driver Version 6.14.10.4410

Bummer.  :(

If you pick up FreeSpace 2 for $6 off GoodOldGames.com, then install the FreeSpace Port, you can play FreeSpace 1 that way. It's certain to work on anything up to and including Windows 7.

fair enough,
Any help other help on how to get it working now?

That launches the LAUNCHER in compatibility mode. You need to do this for fs.exe, which should be in C:/Games/FreeSpace if you didn't put it elsewhere.

^-- This.

This actually sounds similar to a problem I had once.  Try adding FS.exe to your list of firewall exceptions.
