Question for a Modder
ok, I LOVE Freespace 2. BEST sim game ever. I ALSO love Star Wars Empire at War. great stratagy space game. Has anyone ever considered making a Freespace 2 Mod for Empire at War?!? I would personally empty my colon if someone did. The mods for Empire at War are great and a Freespace 2 one would top them ALL in my opinion

Personally I would what and see what Fate of the Galaxy delivers, as the communities dedicated star wars team and have been developing some awesome teaser shots.

I would play a Freespace 2 EAW mod. The ground based stuff would have to imagined from scratch, which would be fun. The only thing is the Shivans would win every time.

A while back there was antempt to mod EAW and create a FS2-based TC ... however there were some issues with EAW (something about EAW having a lot of stuff hardcoded...)

Empire at War's engine literally can't do beam weapons.  You can hack it with a rapid-firing cannon with long projectile trails, but it still looks like crap.  Slash beams are still impossible though.  If you had an OCD-like compulsion to do a FreeSpace mod for a Petroglyph game, your best bet is Universe at War because that game does support stuff like beams, including slash beams.  There was one in the works for Universe at War, but the team moved to Sins of a Solar Empire because the UaW mod tools are utter crap mixed with fail.

Actually, there is one way to make a beam weapon in EaW : the Accuser's Proton Beam ability, which draws a beam effect between the emitter bone and the target as defined by lightningeffects.xml. :P
The thing is that you can only have one beam per ship, and can't restrict its firing arc.
Also, all beams will look identical because they all use the same effect entry.

Still can't do slash beams.

Also, you can do a direct-fire beam via weapon model and very specific firing ranges, like that guy did to make the composite beams on the Clone Gunship thing. That only works on ground combat because the model actually extends past the target and into the "ground".

A FS1 mod for EaW would be entirely feasible though. :P
