War in Heaven P1 Voice Acting Call, Take 2

Blue Planet 2: War in Heaven
    Part 1
    Voice Acting Call

The Blue Planet team is now taking auditions for various parts in Blue Planet: War In Heaven Part 1. I, Cobra, am the coordinator of the voice acting effort.  If you have any questions you can post in this thread, send me a PM on the forums, contact me on IRC, or email me at [email protected]. Auditions are to be sent there as well. Size limits should not be a problem, as you'll be sending them in .ogg format, and them things is tiny.

The following introduction is for the eyes of all potential voice actors.  Those familiar with Blue Planet need not read through all this boring stuff and skip right ahead to the meat of the post. :P (Last couple of lines are important, though! :nervous:

    Quote
Blue Planet is a gritty, dark psychological drama set against the backdrop of an interstellar war. In spite of its science fiction trappings, it’s more Hurt Locker or Band of Brothers than it is Star Wars. When it comes to voice acting, we look for underplayed, believable, naturalistic performances; think of the recent classic SF series Battlestar Galactica; we would rather have underacting than overacting.

You will be working on Blue Planet 2: War in Heaven, the sequel to the original Blue Planet. Because Blue Planet is one of the most popular and respected projects in our community, you can expect to be heard by somewhere between 3000 and 5000 players. Actors from the first Blue Planet drew such praise that many of our fans thought we’d hired professionals, and we’re hoping to maintain that standard.

You can expect your work to be posted on YouTube.  You are welcome to use it as a reference on a resume, CV, or demo reel.

Blue Planet 2 has already been released without voice acting, and our characters drew a lot of fan praise and attention. You will be bringing life to roles that are already beloved by many, but you will also be defining them. If our first release was anything to go by, you will probably get some fan mail.

There are a few things you need to know going into your role:

    • Although it takes place in a setting that contains aliens (including a terrible menace, the Shivans), War in Heaven is the story of a struggle between two human democracies, both of which have considerable claim to the moral high ground. There are no clear good or bad guys, and we try to present both sides as human and flawed.
    • Accent is not a concern other than to be understandable to English speakers.  If you have more than one accent we would be interested in hearing them all. Multiple renditions can be sent as separate emails or in separate folders in a archive or separate archives (really doesn't matter as long as the filenames stay as specified.
      • We will apply radio filters and other post-processing to your lines, but you can feel free to do noise removal or normalization if and only if you feel comfortable with that kind of engineering.  If your recording software does not support exporting to .ogg or you are not comfortable with converting the file, we will accept .wav file submissions (we would prefer if they were 7-zipped, though). Just keep in mind the attachment size limit noted at the top of the post. Any other file format, including .mp3, will not be accepted.
      • Please pay careful attention to your script and make sure you save your lines using the exact filenames provided. The numerical components of the filenames might seem to jump around nonsensically; this is a result of the software we use to put your lines into our mission files. Also, please verify the filenames of the auditions that you are submitting against the list here to make sure you have the filename correct (ie. use your browser search and make sure that the filename aligns with what you read in that file).
      • Note that all lines to be read will be preceded by a bolded line naming the file that we require you to use when submitting the acted line. The acted line may also be preceded by some stage direction. The line to be voice acted will be contained within double quotes.
      • By submitting lines you are giving us permission to use the lines without further notice to you, that is, we will attempt to notify you via email when the mod is released, but we will not wait for or expect a response to that notice.  We will of course credit you in the credits of the mod for the lines that we do use.  As such make sure you indicate in your submission e-mail how you would like to be credited, that is, Firstname Lastname, "Handle", Firstname "Handle" Lastname, F "Handle" Lastname, or Firstname "Handle" L.  If you do not, we will not consider your submission.

You can contact [email protected] with your questions or updates on your progress.

Good luck, and we can’t wait to hear your work!

      -The Blue Planet team
There are three categories of roles: "Major" roles, "Minor" roles, and Personas.  "Major" roles are ones that we consider to be fundamental to the story, they generally have a lot of lines or participate in more than one mission; they also drive the story along.  "Minor" roles are ones that we consider to be more background type people, they speak but don't really drive the story along.  Personas are the voices of the random pilots that you encounter during the missions.  The there will not necessarily be only one successful actor for a persona.

          • Audition lines (14 lines) (NOTE: Audition lines are characters entire role)
            • File: bp202s04.ogg
            • Tight, fierce remark at a momentary victory, quickly lapsing back into urgent, professional command.
            • "The Idomeneus has withdrawn! Gunnery, reset firing solutions, main weapons to bear on the GTCv Cardinal and Regensburg.”
            • File: bp202s05.ogg
            • In the middle of a heavy firefight, desparate for assistance. Speaking rapidly, but don’t get incoherent. Akula is ‘ACK-uh-luh’, sort of like ‘spatula’, if it were spelled ‘spakula’. Idomeneus is ‘ITTO-men-ee-us’.
            • “Alpha wing, the Akula's navigation systems were damaged in a bomber attack. She emerged over 10 klicks from her intended destination. We're trying to assist but the Idomeneus has got us pinned down!”
            • File: bp202s11.ogg
            • Declaring another momentary victory.
            • "Cardinal is out of action!”
            • File: bp202s17.ogg
            • With a sense of relief, but the last sentence is poorly concealed remorse.
            • "This is the Ranvir. Good to hear you, Command. We've taken some hull and weapons damage, but all other systems remain functional. We lost the Akula to GTVA fire."
            • File: bp202s19.ogg
            • Gasped in shock.
            • "By the stars..."
            • File: bp202s21.ogg
            • With a victorious tone but not overzealous. For all these lines, remember – these are tense declarations of progress but your life is still in critical danger. Don’t get too exultant.
            • "There goes the Regensburg!"
            • File: bp202s22.ogg
            • With relief, but they’re not out of the woods yet.
            • "Hostile warships have withdrawn, and the jamming has ceased. We're starting our jump cycle and attempting to reach Command."
            • File: bp202s28.ogg
            • Shipwide announcement, warning of an incoming attack. SSMs are subspace missiles
            • "Acknowledged. All hands, brace for SSM impact."
            • File: bp202s30.ogg
            • Tensely reporting events to command
            • "We repelled an attack by four Alliance warships and a light assault force. The Akula is intact, but we are damaged and operating at reduced effectiveness."
            • File: bp202s36.ogg
            • Concerned for the escort (alpha wing) but then followed up by a warning. AWACS is ‘EIGH-wax’, not ‘eigh-double-u-eigh-see-ess.’
            • "Still with us, Alpha wing? We'll be jump-ready in less than two minutes, but that AWACS is still out there. It could vector in bombers or a warship."
            • File: bp202s43.ogg
            • Clear and professional, like how any other order would be given to a crew. Ranvir is ‘RON-veer’.
            • "Acknowledged, Second Fleet. Ranvir clear. Helm, take us to the exit point, ahead full."
            • File: bp202s49.ogg
            • This is going to be a tough line. You are about to die and you know it. Without obvious resignation or fear – think of the calm, professional efforts of an airline pilot to avert disaster until the last second. At the same time, with a hint of venom, even hate. Serkr is ‘sur-kur’, as in ‘berserker.’
            • "It's Serkr Team. Steele's war dogs, the ones who took Artemis. Alpha wing, clear our blast zone. You've done all you can."
            • File: bp202s71.ogg
            • Another shipwide announcement, followed by clear firm tone of voice when communicating with alpha wing.
            • "All hands, prepare to execute a crash jump. Stand by, Alpha, those gunships will supplement your escort momentarily."
            • File: bp202s74.ogg
            • Straightfoward and clear.
            • "Distance to target twelve kilometers. Engaging with main guns!"
        • Reshadiye Control (22 lines)
        • Rheza Station Control (21 lines)
        • Samuel Bei (? lines) CAST
        • Secretary-General Toqueville (2 lines)
        • Sergei Gwilym (18 lines)
        • Solaris Control (10 lines) CAST
          • Male/Female, Age: Variable. Captain of the Solaris.
          • Audition lines (10 lines) (NOTE: Audition lines are characters entire role)
            • File: bp201s45.ogg
            • Short and direct. Hint of caution in the last line – relaying bad news, with worse to come.
            • "Navaja Alpha wing, be advised, the Rhineland came under GTVA attack before she could make it to Mars. We lost all contact with the frigate and Gamma wing.”
            • File: bp201s46.ogg
            • Again short and direct. Firm tone of voice for the end of the line.
            • "Recon has vectored the strike force's approach to your area. Stay alert.”
            • File: bp205s026.ogg
            • Straight read, professional tone.
            • "Roger that, Alpha 1. We're deploying a boarding party with an explosives team to recapture the freighter. Stand by.”
            • File: bp206s006.ogg
            • The enemy has launched an unexpected blitz against all expectations. The character is under tremendous stress, handling multiple crisis situations at once. With more tension and speed than usual.

The situation's dire and a request for help is called in, deliver this line rushed but clearly spoken; imagine dozens of other problems dueling for your attention. A Uriel (YUR-ee-ell, not ER-ee-ell) is a gunship.
            • "Confirmed, Navaja Alpha One, element of two strike Uriels is inbound on your position.”
            • File: bp206s018.ogg
            • Again, keeping it professional, with a sense of urgency.
            • "Pilots, our perimeter is critically compromised. We're pulling you out to defend against Tev bombers heading for Beijing and Hyderabad. Jump out to the Solaris immediately.”
            • File: bp206s042.ogg
            • The situation is getting worse for the Federation. Imagine the character scrambling desperately to find some way to help. ‘Rheza’ is ‘REE-zuh’, not ‘RAY-zuh’. Tev is a slur; it rhymes with Bev as in Beverly.
            • "Sorry, Rheza. The Tevs are pressing hard all across the sector. We have nothing. We'll pass your request to Second Fleet.”
            • File: bp207s34.ogg
            • Sharp and direct; Navajas is ‘NAH-va-has’, not NAH-va-jaws’.
            • "Roger that, Laporte. We're firing up a fast-response team and the rest of the Navajas. On station in two minutes.”
            • File: bp212s02.ogg
            • Crisp, quick and professional demeanor. Reshadiye is pronounced Ruh-shaw-dee-ah.
            • "Roger that, Indus Alpha. Link your transmission frequencies to the Reshadiye, full encryption. We'll contact you if your orders change. Solaris Control, signing off.”
            • File: bp213s044.ogg
            • Agitated.
            • "Reshadiye transport, this is Solaris Control. What is your status? We lost contact several minutes ago.”
            • File: bp213s047.ogg
            • Firm and cautious, knowing that things are going not going as planned. Taudigani is ‘Todd-eh-gone-ee’.
            • "The negotiations will be moved to a secondary site. We are deploying a second transport and additional escorts. Transfer Elder Taudigani and proceed.”
        • Suffron Control (21 lines)
        • UEA Hanuman (14 lines)
        • UEF Court Martial Panel (4 "lines")
        • Wargods Alpha "Levi" 3 (14 lines)CAST
        • Yangtze Control (21 lines)
      • "Minor" Roles
        • Captain Mence
          • Male. Mature voice. A consummate soldier who leads a suicidal stand to save the lives of the civilians behind him. Grim, serious, but with an undertone of courage and defiance. You can watch the sequence that contains your role here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u_bWDo5mlDw. Accent is not a concern other than to be understandable to the majority of English speakers.
          • Audition lines (5 lines) (Note the audition lines are the characters entire role).
            • File: bp200s01.ogg
            • Mence leads his reinforcements into a losing battle. He speaks to reassure the nearby civilians - authoritative, firm, but with an undertone of tension and dread:
            • "Artemis Station, continue your evacuation. We'll buy you as much time as we can."
            • Artemis Station asks for twenty minutes.
            • File: bp200s03.ogg
            • Mence replies, knowing that it is impossible but nonetheless putting up a facade of confidence:
            • "We'll do our best. Godspeed, Artemis station."
            • The battle turns against Mence's side. He speaks up to rally panicked fighters ahead:
            • File: bp200s06.ogg
            • Defiant, encouraging, but without getting too emotive - think of the grim and stalwart captain rather than some kind of football coach exhorting his team.
            • "Nelson to all ships! Hold the line! Reinforcements are on their way."
            • File: bp200s07.ogg
            • Mence orders his fighters to attack, laying out a plan of battle that he knows will fail:
            • An experienced captain giving orders, quick and precise. The Atreus is the flagship of the enemy admiral. 'Tev' is pronounced with a short 'e'; it is a slur or epithet for the enemy government.
            • "All fighters, spearhead our assault against the Tev cruisers. Punch a hole for us to the Atreus."
            • File: bp200s08.ogg
            • Mence's last orders, and last lines before his implied death. As with all his lines, don't get too dramatic. The music will sell this scene; Mence needs to sound like a brave and stalwart man doing his job, not someone who knows he's making an epic last stand.
            • "Helm, increase to ramming speed as soon as the way is clear. Forward railguns and missile batteries, prepare to fire. May the universe judge all of us kindly in the next life."
        • "Glance" REVISED January 15th
          • Female. Age flexible. Professional solider (pilot).  All auditions on this line that were submitted before January 15th, 2011 have been thrown out, please resubmit the line considering the updated directions.
          • Audition lines (1 line) (Note the audition lines are the characters entire role).
            • File: bp209s98.ogg
            • This is part of the squadron making fun of each other.  It is a comment on how ugly (hence the handle) "Ogre" is.
            • "We've got to start purging the negative contributors. Next time Ogre's got a Tev on his six I think I'll just let things take their course. It's better for all of us."
        • Gloire Tactical
          • Male or female. Age flexible.
          • Audition lines (7 lines) (Note the audition lines are the characters entire role). Gloirie is pronounced as 'glwar'.
            • File: bp209s40.ogg
            • "This is the Gloire. We're now moving to breach the Agincourt. Fire teams Alpha and Bravo, stand by to make entry. Check your armor, everyone."
            • File: bp209s42.ogg
            • "No need to mother-hen us, Captain Kyrematen. We've got it. Alpha, Bravo, ROE is weapons tight. Any negligent discharge with that 15 mil and you could hole something critical."
            • File: bp209s43.ogg
            • "Good job handling that snag, Wargods. We're in position. Agincourt airlock is handshaking and opening. Cobra drones, go...in and clear, thermal clear, GTDS clear...okay, entrance is clear. Go go go."
            • File: bp209s47.ogg
            • "All right, Marines, we're putting the capture team aboard. Secure CIC, damage control, nav, and engineering."
            • File: bp209s63.ogg
            • "Tev fire has saturated our point defenses and passed our safe armor threshold. We're on the red-line now pilots."
            • File: bp209s75.ogg
            • "We've got some bad news, pilots. The Agincourt's subspace drive was either damaged during the attack or sabotaged during the boarding. Without a new motivator, this ship is going nowhere."
            • File: bp209s86.ogg
            • "Indus control, the Agincourt is ours. Repeat, we have control of the Agincourt."
        • GTC Norfolk
          • Male or female. Age flexible. Frantic communications officer on a warship.  Speaker realizes that the ship was baited to commit to the action and is now being used as bait to lure the Admiral's destroyer (the Carthage, a much larger warship) into the same trap.
          • Audition lines (2 lines) (Note the audition lines are the characters entire role).
            • File: bp214s43.ogg
            • Transmission intercepted by player's fighter. Carthage is pronounced "carTH-age".
            • "Carthage, Norfolk. We are adrift and our escort has been eliminated. Federation presence is strong. We advise against any rescue attempt. Carthage, do you read? Do not attempt a rescue operation! We're bait!"
            • File: bp214s46.ogg
            • Transmission intercepted by player's fighter.
            • "Carthage, Carthage, do you read? Tell the Admiral we're past her help. Do NOT, under any circumstances, enter the area! Carthage, respond!"
        • GTCv Marcus Glaive Revised Jaunary 15th
          • Male or female. Age flexible. Communications officer of mid-sized warship. Cold and professional. We are asking that anyone that has submitted this role previously to resumbit with the new direction because the current audtitions we have were not what we were looking for.
          • Audition lines (1 line) (Note the audition lines are the characters entire role).
            • File: bp210s057.ogg
            • Transmission intercepted by player's fighter.
            • "Get out of there, Bloodletters! The Feds have you in a fire pocket!"
        • GTCv Medea
          • Male or female. Age flexible. Communications officer of a mid-sized warship.
          • Audition lines (1 line) (Note the audition lines are the characters entire role).
            • File: bp210s092.ogg
            • Transmission intercepted by player's fighter.
            • "Medea here. Our end run is going poorly, Hood. Resistance is fierce."
        • Insuperable Control
          • Male or female. Age flexible. Communications officer of a mid-sized warship.
          • Audition lines (2 lines) (Note the audition lines are the characters entire role).
            • File: bp215s010.ogg
            • "Lopez has deployed two warships to attack, but she's holding the rest of her screen close. She must expect a flanking jump."
            • File: bp215s134.ogg
            • Imperieuse is pronounced: Imp-ear-ee-yoos (as in juice)
            • "Comms, hail the Imperieuse and tell them we surrender. Maybe they'll buy it for a few seconds. Helm, ramming speed!"
        • Major Prathanya
          • Male or female. Age flexible. Veteran bomb disposal. Team leader. Obviously tired, but calm, cool, and collected.
          • Audition lines (9 lines) (Note the audition lines are the characters entire role).
            • File: bp205s042.ogg
            • "Major Prathanya here. What is it?"
            • File: bp205s044.ogg
            • "Aside from six days' rest and a vacation in Tahiti? No. My team just finished pulling a live Helios warhead out of the Katana's flight deck. This should be a piece of piss."
            • File: bp205s046.ogg
            • "We can use anything you've got. Detonators, types of fissionables, mass, brisance...we need to know as much as we can before we start RSP."
            • File: bp205s067.ogg
            • "This is Major Prathanya. We've deployed drones into the Nauticus. No sign of the crew. We're attempting to isolate the warhead's software connection to shipboard sensors. Stand by."
            • File: bp205s068.ogg
            • "Alpha 1, you need to remain calm. We're in the middle of some delicate work here. The warhead has air displacement sensors and our drones very nearly set them off."
            • File: bp205s070.ogg
            • "That's totally impractical. We're not even ready to begin preliminary RSP, let alone defuse. You need to buy us more time."
            • File: bp205s075.ogg

      I have two questions:
      1) Did you get all the auditions from "Voice acting take 1", or should we re-submit them?
      2) Why hasn't anyone stickied this thread yet?

So, I planned before to try my hand at this, and never found the time; but now I do have some spare time to kill, and.....

I've gone through what is currently listed for audition, and the only part that I feel I do justice is intended to be a female part.  :banghead: Guess I'll see if I can coax my voice into being a bit more expressive, wait and keep an eye on the other parts as they're posted.

Despite that, should I go ahead and send in the recording for that part? Just curious. I really should replay WiH now that my schedule isn't so swamped.

Send in your audition (just a few sample lines if you want) and you'll at least be entered in the running.

You are both able and heavily encouraged to submit lines for as many roles as you possibly can.

I think a few of the first responders managed to submit lines for every single part, regardless of role gender.

To be perfectly honest there's two or three people with more than six parts, though I'm hoping to make them more diverse. Mongoose has that generic voice going so he's in a lot of roles at the moment. :P

      Wow.   :nervous:

Is it always this hard to get voice actors?

And I'll review the parts and see if I can't make my voice both sound different from my regular voice and repeat it enough times to do some takes.  No promises, but I'll try.  :)

Well, considering we're well over the number of parts in Age of Aquarius (I'd say around twenty, maybe, in AoA) and we have over seventy separate parts.. Yeah. I'm tempted to go to places like Voice123 or whatever they're called.

I've tried recording myself a couple times in the past, but gave up after listening to the recordings. I'm not sure if this is due to the microphone I'm using or what, but I simply can't stand the sound of my own voice.
