I know I'm probably going to hell just for linking to a single youtube video of questionable importance in the grand scheme of things, but...

Holy ****muddling ****, why can't we see more Star Wars like this?

It's entirely fan made, and still a work in progress that was released rather prematurely. The video above is merely that of another fan adding some SFX and music to an otherwise mute animation.  It's awesome and whatnot, but my real question relates to the current situation of space sims and - more pertinently - Star Wars space sims. I know it's a dead genre (for the time being), but seriously, let's see some forward motion here! Someone track down George Lucas, grab him by the jowls, and make him sign a poorly-written order for LucasArts to commence work on a next-gen Tie Fighter game!

Or perhaps an animated series about a Tie Fighter academy, or something. Like that old Wing Commander Academy cartoon that used to be on back in the 90s.

The only thing wrong with that video is that there's a female TIE pilot in there.

The space sim genre is kinda sorta still alive. There's a space sim called Faster Than Light  that's been released on Steam which more or less has you as the captain of some starship, or... something.

I wept. Mysterious forces beyond my ken had reached into my beautiful mission and energized its pilots with inhuman bomb-firing abilities. Could just be a really effeminate Coruscanti male. The Empire has a well-known bias against aliens and women serving in their armed forces, but they never said anything about sexual orientation

IIRC, the Empire didn't explicitly forbid females from serving, but they did make careers difficult for them, because of the bias. This usually resulted in them having only few female pilots and soldiers, but those who managed to get in were usually brilliant (or, in rare cases, bedded the right man). A female ace would be likely to fly a TIE Fighter, as she won't exactly be near the top of the line for a transfer to more advanced fighters.

Admiral Daala? "Brilliant"? Really?

(to be fair, she was handicapped by being a character thought up by Kevin Anderson, but still....)

Daala was a starship captain, and the biggest problem with her was the guy who created her. I haven't read those novels (they're somewhat hard to come by in Poland), but for what I know from Wookiepedia, she'd be a great character if written by someone else. She had to be an excellent commander in order to reach the rank she did (and was stated as such), but she lost most of actual battles she commanded...

And she also bedded the right man.  Grand Moff Tarkin is the right man, no?

even then she only got posted to guard, while important, about the most out of the way research facility in the Empire.  I think the most notable exceptions to "no non HuMan rule" were Isard, but again a lot of that came down to who her farther was and Mara Jade.

I'd imagine the Imperial Intelligence probably has less qualms about using women and non humans.  Strictly male humans would really limit the assets they could use in the field.  Lara Notsil and Isaard were likely not the only female agents in the entire Intel community.

no but there is a big leap from field operatives/analyst and Director of Imperial Intelligence especially when there were probably several men who would have at least the same chance based on ability and service record.

I thought we were arguing about TIE pilots not Directors of Imperial Intelligence?

I suspect that was more about the attitude towards hiring action heros in the '70s that has just got turned into canon by the loveable, but occasionally over-zealous Star-Wars fandom ;)

Was there really a point in showing the pilots through the suits in the first place?

More on-topic, is that otaking guy who's creating the animation the same guy who did that Doctor Who "anime" clip?  Because the animation style's almost a dead-ringer if it isn't.

Yep it is. As usual, his stuff looks great... it's a pity you don't see detailed designs with that many layers of shading nowadays. I love the way he humanized the normally "faceless" TIE pilots while making it clear to the viewer they're in helmets all the while.

The Empire didn't really forbid you from signing up, it just made your career difficult.
