I'm currently working on a heavily armoured transport model.
I was thinking about the realistic size and the number of troops a transport should carry.
My first idea was 500 men, but I've noticed only now how big the Argo was. A 170 m-s long transport is really huge, bigger than some cruisers.

What do you think ?
Just fly on !

IS this for FS2 or a mod?

A klingon transport carries like 50 I think.

others I can't talk about... But basicly I think that at a minimum a transport should be able to carry 50-100 troops. for a medium. A light transport should be able to carry an apc and it's crew (or max 50people no vehicles). a Heavy transport should have 100+ people and probably 4 or 5 vehicles/crew... after that you corss the boundaries of other ship classes...
Don't think of it as being outnumbered. Think of it as having a wide target selection !

how many is an elesium capable of carrieng, and an argo? you could always jut calculate how many peopple go inside an touringcar, add room for lifesupport and engines, and go from there.

Acording to the debrief of the first Blue Lions mission the Argo carries 'thousands'. Assuming that's no more than 1000, and since its an evac lest assume they've all been crammed in. I'd say about 400 to 500 troops. This is just using the figure from they above said mission.

Personally I'd say 100-150 troops but that's just me.

I'd say 50-100 for the Elysium, and maybe 100-200 for the Argo. Since it was an evac, they probably took out all the stuff that wasn't encessary. So they could probably hold thousands.

It should carry a lot if it is that big, think how many people you could get standing in a 170X100 m area.  Sure, there would be other stuff in the ship, but it would easily get more than one floor on it.
I'd say a good guess is about 2000, and thats pretty conservative.

Yeah, the good old "search" button.
Thanks, it's useful !

But really, some transports have only the size of a a fighter,
and the Argo could not land on a football field (if it could land at all).
Considering that a much thinner airliner can take up some 200, an Argo sized wessel should easily take thousands.

I'll stay at 500 and a length of about 70-80 m.
Just fly on !

I guess it jes depends on the capacity in which the ship in question is serving. Compare it to the size and compliment of the destroyers. Take that into consideration and 1000 seems reasonable. But soldiers heading into combat with the requsite equipment consume far more sapce than troops being ferried between theatres.

Sure.
But the men/space ratio on transports can be much higher than that on a destroyer.
The later has room for huge weapon systems, hangars, repair shops and may give a more convenient space for the long term living. I mean the personnel of a destroyer spends months on the ship.
While a transport may have only a seat for each man, carrying them from ship to land or from planet to planet.
Considering the size of the FS universe and the way of travelling between systems (fast jumps and short periods between them), one can get from one end to the other within a day.
Which means that a transport has to hold only a really small space for each man and his bag, like an airplane does.
Or at least that's how I imagine a transport. :)
Just fly on !

Fair enough. That makes sense

Dunno,

I always thought they would transport troops all standing in rows, may be put bars on the sides for them to hold on to. Who knows how many you could fit that way.

Just like on a bus he ? ;)
It may work on a ship to ship transport, or on a landing craft.
Though I wouldn't cross the half galaxy, or go through a rough landing that way. :)

The question is somewhat similar that:
How many butterflies can be carried by an open train carriage ?
The right answer is also a question:
Are they tied together ?
