The War Begins: Uniting The Factions

<< < (2/11) > >>

Autohummer:
Captain Raonaid Somtaaw
Gender: Female
Age: 29
Distinguishing features: Brown hair and irises, 175cm in height, athletic build
Current assignment: Commanding Officer, carrier HNS Phuur-Nan
Profile: Before the Vaygr War began, Raonaid was the loadmaster of an old Chieftain Mk. 3-class Ore Processor, performing the same thankless yet essential job her ancestors had been doing for more than a century, using the exact same tools of the trade. Her daily routine consisted of overseeing Workers unloading, identifying resource-rich asteroids, laying out hazard zones, coordinating repairs and, if the Workers brought home a jackpot in the form of a purple resource crystal, personally controlling the PDA beam that strips it layer by layer. The war saw her, her ship and entire crew being drafted into the Hiigaran Navy as a second-line resource operation, but as the war situation deteriorated, she was assigned to the new carrier Phuur-Nan to manage the carrier's resourcing operations. As fate would have it, the Phuur-Nan's commanding officer would never arrive, his shuttle being shot down in the opening waves of Vaygr attacks at Sarum. As the only officer that could be spared with any commanding experience, she was put in charge of the Phuur-Nan and sent to the front as the first carrier in the Pride of Hiigara's task force. She commands her carrier much like how she led her Processor crew: efficiency, safety and logistics are all her game. While this brought her into conflict with other carrier commanders, who were often former strikecraft pilots, the fact that her ship survived the Mothership's entire journey is enough to silence most critics. Her excellent dockspace management was key to getting enough strikecraft out to intercept every single ADW that was launched at Hiigara, buying time for the legendary Sajuuk to destroy all three Planet Killers.

HNS Phuur-Nan
Profile: The Phuur-Nan is named after the old Kiith Somtaaw Shaman-class carrier of the same name, which was broken up for scrap on the eve of the Vaygr War, after nearly a century of service. Part of the new Phuur-Nan was built with material taken from the old carrier. During the Vaygr War, the Phuur-Nan was undergoing final assembly at Shipyard Naabal in the Sarum System when it was attacked by a Vaygr assault force. Fortunately, the Pride of Hiigara task force arrived in time to rescue both the shipyard and the unfinished carrier, which was launched with only its frigate facility installed and turned over to the Pride of Hiigara task force. It served with distinction throughout the war and was tasked with supporting the bomber squadrons that intercepted Vaygr ADWs fired during the final battle above Hiigara. After the battle, the Phuur-Nan is assigned to patrol the Hiigaran Control Zone, training up new pilots, gathering resources, building ships and dealing with Vaygr stragglers as the rest of the Hiigaran Navy pushes the Vaygr out of the Hiigaran Control Zone and back to the Outer Reaches.

Assassin714:
Good stuff. I'm assuming you're starting off in a variant/instance of the Homeworld universe, right? We'll wait for more people to join before starting.

Autohummer:
Yes, I start off about 3 months after the victory over Hiigara. The Phuur-Nan got rear echelon duty in an already-secure sector. I am wondering if you want the players' fleets/ships to get sucked into another universe immediately or do you want to Shivans to start pouring in the start zone en masse?

Lorric:
Well, I don't know right now what to expect from this or what can be expected of me either in this, but I want to have the option of joining in, so I'll just nip over to the WoD Forum Game threads to go get something I left there...

I, Admiral Lorric and my beloved, undefeated 2nd CRF go to war for a third time.

I had logos for all my squadrons but they don't seem to be showing in the thread anymore. :(

Still, you only wanted a short post, and they'd have taken up a lot of space. That was my fleet for the rehearsal / beta test for the second iteration of Spoon's forum game, which unfortunately doesn't look like ever happening as nothing has been mentioned of it for the better part of 3 years.

As you can see, the fleet is rather one dimensional, but I think I should stick with it. Iirc the carriers themselves were strong enough to take more punishment than most fleet craft in the various player fleets, while the Lord class fleet carrier was capable of duking it out with just about anything. The weapons systems on the carriers are no joke but wouldn't be able to match up with a dedicated destroyer, though their compliment of strike craft would swing the balance. I had a big advantage at engaging from long range thanks to all the squadrons and the long range missiles on the carriers, and my fleet was more nimble than anything the other player factions could field, but if someone had managed to get their fleet in close from any of the other player factions I would have got mauled. So that's how my fleet works. Ideally I would work with someone else in this game who could cover for that weakness and get between me and that kind of enemy.

As for WoD tech itself, I think the Freespace Shivans that we've seen outside of the jugs would get mauled by WoDs Terrans. Unfortunately, it's clear the Shivans are bringing a lot more to the party than that.

You'll have different encounters depending on where you start, which is why picking your starting location is important. You may not even encounter the Shivans immediately.
