Title: Which one to download?!!
Post by: IronForge on January 11, 2010, 12:36:19 am
Hi, I've looked at the wiki, and it just confused the hell outta me. Quoting the wiki. http://www.hard-light.net/wiki/index.php/Inferno

INFR1:
Main campaign: 14

INFA:
Main campaign: 20

INFASA:
Main campaign: 30+
TeOO: *classified*
THoD: *classified*

INFA2:
Main campaign: 30+

INF SCP:
Chapter One: 30+
Chapter Two: 20+

So. Which one/s should I be downloading now? Infa 2 is dead, inf SCP is WIP, INFASA is WIP too (ok, not good, things are just gona get messy) INFR1 and Inferno Alliance. So, is inferno alliance the latest version or should I play INFR1 first?

This is Inferno: you have an obligation to be confused.
Inferno SCP = Super Confusing Project
INFR1 is a pile of missions where bigass ships pwn smaller ships and are  in turn pwned by biggerass ships which in turn are pwned by evenbiggerass ships etc etc etc.

Inferno Alliance might have had an actual plot. I haven't played it, since I was scared away by it being delivered as an .exe (yes, so was INFR1, but I saw Alliance first, then later decided to try INFR1, then went to look Alliance, but some download links were dead and the rest were mighty slow).

INFR1 came before INFA in release, but in plot INFA is Post-Lucifer through the eyes of the GTA Sol fleet and INFR1 is way Post-Capella.

INFR1 is part of a defunct continuity...

INFA is also part of a defunct continuity.

All things considered, INFR1 is probably more worth playing.

For what it is it's not bad, I'd like to see the later campaigns finished if not just for the new Claymore models.

Hey. For it's time Inferno Release 1 was revolutionary. It was the flagship mod of its day, until people decided to focus more on storyline than the big ships blowing each other up.

Kind of sick of all these people bashing Inferno. Is it somehow more socially acceptable to bash Inferno than other mods?

Yeah, it is. But INFR1 had some good stuff going for it. INFA was a bit dull, but perfectly solid work. INFASA looks like it could be a lot of fun. Although what I saw of Mobius' background material was a bit turgid, he's put a lot of work into it and he can certainly FRED.

Remember back when everyone was oohing and aahing over early shots of the Gigas? :)

You mean like the last one which was the Gigas's beam broadside posted on December 21, 2008? :P

Too bad the pictures in it no longer work.

Oh the nine-year old ones.
Which I'd wager is the reason why it's bashed more than other mods.

Then bring it out of hiatus and work on the real deals and release them.

Snail's not on Inferno.

I kind of feel like Inferno R1 is worth playing just for the final massive set-piece mission, "Nemesis."  (Think that's the name, anyway.)  It's a fantastic example of how a Battle-of-Endor mission can be pulled off properly, and it was a lot of fun to play through.  I remember there was at least one in-mission soundtrack that was particularly awesome, too.  For its day, Inferno had a massive number and variety of custom ships (though not all of them have aged particularly well), and it did serve as somewhat of a flagship project for the community for some time.

The music track used on Nemesis and the track used on three missions (First is used claming the Sol Gate, second is used on the first Shivan re-encounter, and third is used on the 14th (Final) mission, Gigas) were pretty good.

Yeah, the latter one is what I was thinking of.  It fit really well with that first Shivan encounter.

I also like the one in the battle over Earth. However, I feel that the newer ones from other campaigns, like the music tracks duress, machine, aim, the mainhall opening for Dawn of Sol, and a couple tracks used in PI are better.

The music track used on Nemesis...
That would be the battle over Earth mission.

I know machine and aim are Blue Planet, but what's duress?

Exactly. Also, I wonder how people make those music files. They don't have a bunch of instruments or a band to do so. I don't know how one person can make all the musical instrument sounds in a music file. Synthesizer?

Synthesizers, music making software. There are options. And even the software is so advanced nowadays that you could create convincing progressive heavy metal with a proper music making software alone.

AHHH MY HEAD IS IMPLODING  :shaking:

Allright can someone please tell me which is the real inferno!!!
The one where earth is in civil war?
And I believe later on we play as GTVA entering sol? AHHH the plot itself has me confused. I remember very long ago I played one mission where we barged into sol and they pushed us back and took some systems from the GTVA? I dunno. Please tell me which is which...
Title: Re: Which one to download?!!
Post by: General Battuta on January 12, 2010, 11:02:28 pm
In the old continuity, INF:A is a prequel set in Sol, INFR1 you play as the GTVA at war with the Earth Alliance.

You played that latter one.

The new ones, INFASA and INF SCP (Super Confusing Project!) are not yet out.

Alright, I know I do a lot of Inferno-bashing (sorta, at least I try to offer some constructive criticism every now and then...), but here's the deal.

Inferno R1, fair enough, was good for its time.  But I get really annoyed when people try to excuse Inferno's total lack of a storyline by claiming big ships blowing up smaller ships and having those ships look really cool is enough.  Granted, "Nemesis" was well-done, but it's a rarity.  Alliance and R1 were overall boring and disappointing. No mission variety for the most part--it's all blowing stuff up, hoarding off waves of bombers for ten minutes, or blowing up more big ships.

All you need to do is look at Blaise Russel's Sol: A History (which I strongly recommend as an alternative to Alliance) to see a well-done campaign with mission variety, a compelling storyline, original implementation, character development, etc and STILL see big ships blowing up smaller ships.

If you just want to see big ships blowing up smaller ships, release a modpack.  If you want a release worthy of what was essentially HLP's flagship campaign, release a compelling storyline that uses the modpack.

And the funny thing about it was that I was complaining about how out of date INF SCP's graphics were and asking why it takes many years to make some missions, and Snail said something about the campaign being top notch when we never even played it.  :doubt:

Yeah, I heard that one before long ago and I think I recall that being said as I was typing the previous comment, but if it isn't being improved graphically, then what is holding the release back? It surely couldn't take this long unless no work is being done on it or only very small amounts are being done each month since the graphics haven't been touched much for the last few years, apparently. It takes years to make missions?

Make a top-notch campaign like INFASA or INFSCP, then complain.

a load of ****ing bull****
Fine.

Don't even make a top-notch campaign.

Make a campaign, then ****ing complain.

**** you, seriously. The Inferno team isn't being paid to make a campaign for you, they're taking time out of their own day to make something, and for what? For absolutely nothing. They're making something in their free time for absolutely nothing in return. You don't have any right to demand something to be done for you. If you think you somehow have the right to start screaming at people making a game in their own free time, you got another thing coming. Until you've done at least something notable shut your ****ing mouth.

Note that I say this, even though I am no longer on the Inferno team or have any connections whatsoever to Inferno. I'm just pissed off at you and other spoiled morons like you with your ****ing demands.

If you look at the status thread for INFASA, they began making missions around March 25, 2007. One mission was claimed to remain at December 28, 2008 before bughunting, this is better than ST:R's six years.

To re-iterate what everyone else said, High Max, you are being inconsiderate and not using your noggin.

People have jobs.
People have lives.

This means, in turn, FREDers don't wake up in the morning and resume their FREDing. They go to work, and when they come back, they're too buggered to even look at a computer, so they watch TV and resume their lives until they feel like FREDing.

And then you have other people, who seem to have a knack for putting forth an opinion different to your own. This is essential. This now means those thin FREDing sessions are spent on the same mission.

And then you have the rest of the mod.

Bottom Line: High Max, please shut your mouth until you "Do A Darius", and make us a groundbreaking, absolutely outstanding mod+campaign by yourself.

OK so I should go play INFA and then INF1 or which is the logical sequence? Or should I do Sol a history first? I don't care in which order they were released, I just wanna go according to chronological order. Thanks

Sol: A History lets you play through the story of the GTA's fall and birth of the EA from Day One of the Lucifer's destruction, Inferno Alliance I don't remember completely but it starts off a few years after the Lucifer is destroyed and Inferno R1 is years after the Capella Incident.

SAH and INFR1 are (nominally) part of the same continuity.

INFA is kind of standalone and abandoned really.

I won't shut my mouth because I hate when people boost saying their campaign is top notch (it's their opinion) when we never played it. Don't go around teasing people and thinking your products are the best. That is arrogant. Second, I don't care one way or another if I play it, and I never said I want it out or said 'when wil it be done'. Did I?

I'm not spoiled and I never told you to release it and I'm not going to cry if it isn't coming out like video game nuts do, but don't go off saying it is top notch and boosting like an ass when we never played it. So you deserved inconsideration, Snail, when you say things like that. Keep over reacting. Also, you call me spoiled? What a silly assumption about me when you don't know my life and when I never claimed I wanted the campaign out. So spare me the soup opera sob story.
