I just took my younger brother onto the server for the first time, and after some various minecart mishaps, I managed to get him up to my house, and even showed him around the Fenris.  I don't mean to suggest any time pressure or anything, but qaz, is getting dynmap back up and running something you're planning in the semi-near future?  I'm assuming my brother will want to stake his own claim at some point, and I figured it'd be easier to do so if I had a bird's-eye view of what's around.

There's still plenty of room on either side of the (old) northern line, and you should be able to check if anyone is around by going to the top of the nearest mountain or hill.

I'm considering a further northern (now western) extension of my line to newer 1.0 territory. This will come after sandwich's extension is complete.

No such thing as an 'i5 board', you can pop a i3 or i7 in there (if of the same socket, ie Core [1st gen] vs Sandy Bridge [2nd gen]) because its just a naming scheme because Intel hates us all. Look at a mid-range i3, you'll find far better prices.

Fine, its a Intel DP55WB motherboard. socket 1156. i think. in any case, i got it for half the price that people here in croatia are asking for used and abused am2+/am3 mobo's.

Might be switching to a VPS soon, the main issues with the last VPS hosting we had were twofold:
1. Lack of RAM
2. Horridly low IO bandwith

The new host I'm looking at has 3GB of garuanteed ram, in this case I plan on using 1GB as a ramdisk to hold the world in with hourly backups to the main hard-drive in case of power failure. The remaining 2GB will be used mainly for minecraft, however other services such as the Mumble server and a mySQL database will also be migrated onto this machine. Given that Mumble, mySQL and minecraft just about fitted onto the previous VPS which ran with just 1GB of ram in total, 2GB should be more than enough to run it on.
Using a VPS will also give finer control over the server, I'll be able to run a watchdog script to check if it's up or not and hopefully auto-restart it.
