Title: No game servers found
Post by: Yroethiel on February 04, 2014, 03:49:13 pm
Hey,

Firstly - very impressed with Diaspora, excellent work! Really enjoying the single player campaign.

Wanted to try out some multiplayer, but can't seem to see any other players/games.

The game seems to be able to log-in to the servers fine (at least, there's no error and I can see my pilot details bottom left), but I get a message at the bottom, "Retrieving Public Channels" that never goes away. I'm on channel "Eleh" and there's never been anyone else on it, nor have I ever seen another game on the server browser. Tried over perhaps three hours...

Any suggestions, or is it just that the player base isn't large enough?

Thanks for any help!

There may well be a technical problem, but unfortunately Diaspora multiplayer never caught fire, and I don't think there are usually players on except for arranged sessions.

Ah bugger, thanks for the [extraordinarily] quick reply!

Pity that, seems to have plenty of potential. Will try drag a few friends online to try it out :). Back to the single player it is!

Release R1.5 is the planned big multiplayer release. The problem is that to get a multiplayer release we need lots of testers. For testers we need people to regularly play online. For people to play online we need a working multiplayer release.

It's a bit of a vicious cycle. That said, I've been working on multiplayer missions this week and once I've got stuff working I'll be releasing it immediately because technically multiplayer is in beta currently so it doesn't need an official release for updates.

The delay with Star Citizen's dog-fighting module might represent an opportunity for you guys then? To get testers/players, I mean.

Their $38mill PR machine has created a hunger for space sims/combat, and Diaspora represents a pretty polished option. A post on their forums along the lines of "Open Beta - Need testers for free dogfighting space sim" might drum up some interest...

I actually came here from /r/StarCitizen looking for something exactly like this. If you announce a Multiplayer Beta thing I can get about 20 or more of my guildmates in. If you post it on the subreddit you would get even more.

Actually I'm only a few days away from getting the first converted singleplayer mission ready to play. Once that's done, I'll really need playtesters.

Has there actually been any improvement in FSO multiplayer code to make such games anything more than an exercise in frustration? The last time I played multiplayer and I wasn't hosting, the game as usual was lagging so bad you need magical skills because HUD lies to you. We can't all be QuantumDeltas and I'd imagine most people have very little interest in learning to be a QuantumDelta through exercises of frustration that is FSO multiplayer.

When was the last time you played? There are some improvements but they weren't that recent.

That said, improving multiplayer is definitely something I want to do.

Sometime around when WiH R1 was released.

I don't think they've been any major improvements since then. But I don't seem to recall the situation being as dire as you describe with Diaspora.

My experience has been the same as Fury's. The difficulty in finding viable hosts is bad, but the worst part is that the game's netcode butchers the experience if you're off host.

My only experiment with FSO multiplayer was a LAN game where one of the computers couldn't even connect to the other two; once in-game, the two working computers didn't have any problems, but that was on a LAN where lag is nonexistent. I'd be happy to help test for you guys, though; if nobody tests multiplayer, the bugs will never get fixed!

I've played Multiplayer Diaspora quite a lot with my guildmates, I've hosted some and another player also hosted. No one including myself ever had any lag or really any issues at all. The game played very well.

I am looking forward to your multiplayer announcement, I will be checking this thread almost daily hopefully to see when its happening. I would also recommend making a post on www.reddit.com/r/starcitizen. If you dont want to do it I'll do it for you. Just leme know. Thanks for doing this, I love Diaspora!

Since I've no connection to Star Citizen, I'd rather something like that came from a fan of Diaspora.

Sure I get that. I'll make an announcement to the StarCitizen fans, unless someone beats me to it. I'll be checking this particular thread everyday, let me know when you need the crowds of people to come.

Well I've been playtesting on my LAN at home today. Tube launches for multiplayer are working for the initial launch but not for the respawn, this appears to be an error with the script and not with my FREDding but I'm looking into it. I haven't tested my alterations to the combat landing system yet and after that's done I'm going to need an initial alpha test with multiple players so I can start work on balancing.

Once I've got a good idea how to balance this mission, it will make converting the others much quicker, I hope. My goal is to have converted the main campaign to 4 player coop by the end of the month. That might be a tad ambitious but I want the missions playable (if way too easy or too hard) by that time.

That sounds great, I'm sure I can get you 4 people who will want to test no problem. If I'm free I'll probably be there as well. Perhaps we could have multiple instances of this co-op mission running for more effective testing? I dont know if you have a way of extrapolating the data if your not in the game or not. Anyways this sounds awesome. Keep me posted.

Well mostly I'd just need people to tell me if the game was too easy or too hard. And to tell me if they found any bugs, obviously I can't playtest the mission that much on my own.

A small update. Things might take a little longer because I had been converting the mission for 4 player coop and then decided "Stuff that" and decided to go the whole hog and make the game possible to play with 12 players. The initial release is likely to be way too easy as a result but what I'm going to do is let people try it out, tell me how many people played and how easy was it.
