Title: Graphics Problems
Post by: Chief23 on December 06, 2007, 07:10:27 am
Hi all,

I'm new obviously.

i have downloaded turey's installer (cheers turey and gang) [twice - as fluffed up first go properly]

my system spec:
Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition SP2
AMD Sempron 3400+
1.5 GB RAM (DDR2 533)
Nvidia 8500GT

problems:
i can get Freespace 2 to run using Freespace2.exe but its 640x480 (i can live with if my problem cant be fixed, its a quality game - cd scratched hence d/l)
using 3.6.9 and 3.6.10 i get "pixel format opengl w32 problem"   - someone posted a while back about this who was using vista but the post doesnt seem to have been concluded

tried everything (i can find on the net) to get those GRAPHICS to happen     mod is set to mediavps    vps files in that folder    and a mod.ini

when i go into the campaign room only the original campaign is shown

downloaded installer, downloaded everything off installer, run launcher   told it to opengl with all settings wacked up    mod mediavps

Please help if you can     thanks in advance

That's actually the OpenAL install. OpenGL is installed by your graphics card drivers and it's there where you should start. Go to Nvidia's website and make certain you have the most recent version of your graphic card drivers.

To see the mods you have to select them in the launcher's mod tab then go to the campaign room.

As for the drivers, I remember there being some issues with the latest Crysis Beta drivers. What's the filename of the drivers you downloaded?

re mods

done that and still not happening only original campaign

the drivers are called 163.75_forceware_winxp_32bit_international_whql    from nvidia.com about 15 mins ago  (its timestamp 1 Nov 07)

thanks for your help karajorma

Are you using Launcher.exe?  Or just attempting to run the 3_6_9 or 3_6_10 .exe?
Title: Re: Graphics Problems
Post by: Chief23 on December 06, 2007, 08:05:34 am
both

and if i use both they chuck up the same opengl w32 pixel error

to play the game i use freespace2.exe which doesnt have problems    just 640.480

i can live with it but if its fixable might as well fix it

cheers   (ps either i've got the mods setup wrong, not installed something or set something up properly or my graphics card/setup is wrong)

I was just about to ask you if you were running freespace2.exe.

That's the retail launcher. The mods are all installed for FS2_Open and most of them won't work on retail (None of them will work in their current location at all) so it's best to try to fix the openGL problem first.

Run launcher.exe and take a look at the video tab. Try picking a different resolution 32-Bit 1024x768 is the standard BTW.

yeah only running that as it works

launcher.exe

video settings:

Graphics        OPENGL
Resolution     1024 x 768
Colour Depth 32-bit
Texture Filter trilinear
Anisotropic    off
antialiasing    off

General settings high

launcher link
C:\Games\Freespace2\fs2_open_3_6_9.exe

features
C:\Games\Freespace2\fs2_open_3_6_9.exe -mod mediavps -spec -glow -env -jpgtga -mipmap -nomotiondebris -2d_poof -missile_lighting -snd_preload

easy setup

keeps going back to blank and i keep changing to high features

list type   graphics

mod

mediavps

One other thing I'm curious about. When you run Freespace2.exe you say you can only run in 640x480. Is this the only option you get after going into setup?

Do you have a file called sparkyhi_fs2.vp in your main FS2 folder?
Title: Re: Graphics Problems
Post by: Chief23 on December 06, 2007, 08:33:00 am
yeah got that file in c:\freespace2 folder

when i go into setup it only gives me Direct3D card options or no 3D acceleration option

i untick Direct3d and only get the no 3D acceleration

ie open gl not supported im guessing

from reading threads i need to opengl

i can select direct3d 1024x768 but it makes no difference when going to play

this the problem ? opengl not about?

I think you are missing a few of the retail vp's. I'm sure that pixel error is something to do with the GUI mouse cursor being missing which is from one of the retail vp's. Also not being able to play at more than 640x480 on the retail launcher suggest's at least the sparky vp is missing. What files do you have in your FreeSpace root folder?

Oh and

:welcome:

in case you haven't already been beamed aboard!

Run setup again and click on the detect available cards option. You should now be able to select between the 5 options you can see in this picture.

If you only get the 640x480 versions it means your sparkyhi_fs2 file is corrupt and we can solve at least one of your problems by fixing it.

most are mods so it doesnt really matter but ive started the installer again and it would appear it didnt finish/properly install when it said done so im going to install everything try again and take it from there

fsport   - should this have things in?

FSPort is a 'mod' that allows you to play the FS1 main campaign with FSO, which results in much purdier graphics compared to the original FS1. So, if you want to play FSPort, you should have files in that folder. But if you are only interested in FS2, or the FS2 main campaign to be precise, the fsport folder is quite meaningless.

What happens if you set the video tab to Direct3D8 with FS2_Open3.6.9?

hi karajorma   (thanks for all your help mate)

tried that and it loads up the pilot page    click accept and it said something along the lines of this pilot log will be updated to FSO and you cant use it again for retail.....clicked ok

graphics were a bit better but really "blocky"

then went to ready room and got this:

Error: Invalid weapon name.

In sexpression: ( when
   ( true )
   ( good-secondary-time
      "Hostile"
      100
      "Cyclops"

(Error appears to be: Cyclops)

i dont have a "J:/" drive either

D3D is unfortunately unsupported at this time which means that 3.6.10 won't use it. But it should allow you to play the game until you can get hold of a set of graphics drivers that do work. Don't be surprised if the cutscenes don't play in D3D mode though or if you get odd graphical glitches.
