Title: RELEASE: Uncharted Territory
Post by: ReeNoiP on January 04, 2010, 10:30:13 am
(http://i215.photobucket.com/albums/cc220/_chidori_/uct-1.jpg)
A short campaign which takes place during the second Great War. You have recently been transferred to the GTtca Reuil and must now join the 33rd blackbirds in defending a science group from attack. Should be an easy job, but you never know what happens.

Update
Stilljoe7 has helped proofread the entire campaign and 0rph3u5 has given me some very nice backgrounds for the later missions. This and a few minor things have been added in this update (uct_1_1).

Installation:
Create a mod folder in you freespace 2 directory and copy these files to it:
Mod.ini (http://www.mediafire.com/file/q0ee2ojmtmm/mod.ini)
uct_1_1.vp (http://www.mediafire.com/file/emilm2wexqn/uct_1_1.vp)
uct.bmp (http://www.mediafire.com/file/mjkgomio3wm/uct.bmp)

or extract this:uct_1_1.rar (http://www.mediafire.com/file/yi22mymjocz/uct_1_1.rar)

Mirror at Freespacemods (http://freespacemods.net/download.php?view.603)

Please note that the newest version has not been put on sectorgame yet.
Alternative mirror download: sectorgame (http://sectorgame.com/f2s/downloads.php?action=downloads&id=539)

Tested using FSO 3.6.10 final. MediaVPs are needed.

Thanks goes to:
Spoon and Renegade for playtesting
PeterV for creating the Hestia carrier
Everyone who helped me with my FREDding and modding questions.
Singh for his background emporium
0rph3u5 for his help with backgrounds
Stilljoe7 for proofreading

Hope you enjoy the campaign.

For when you finish:
Spoiler:
Could you let me know which ending you got? I'm kinda curious :p

Wouldn't it have been easier to put the three files into a zip, rar or 7zip archive and upload that instead of uploading each file seperately?

And what does the "tca" in GTtca stand for? Tactical Carrier?

Guess it would. And yes exactly that, Tactical Carrier.

This campaign ought to be getting a bit more attention.
Where are the players?

Highlighted. Hopefully that'll kick up interest a bit. Also grabbed myself a copy for my own perusal - looking forward to a bit of free time to have a play through.

Nice fredding skills ReenoiP,
Spoiler:
besides the fact that I completely loose the Reuil in the mission "Division" and I could progress in the campaign (check the campaign file)
and some weird story maters, it's a good and fun mini-campaign, hope to see some of these beauties in the future ^^

I'm looking forward to this also. There's a lot of new talent springing up out of the woodwork. Blaise, Ransom and Axem, your days are numbered

Played it.. liked it! I loved the (brief) visiting of undiscovered space, even if only setting one foot in there before running away again with the stories' vessel. Without spoiling too much, I slightly hoped we'd end up in more unexplored areas. And that means your mod worked, your storytelling captivated me enough for me to want to see more before getting back home to the area of starting level. ;)

I did find a few spelling errors here and there. Perhaps an update with the help of a second person could solve that. :) I'd offer to find them all if I were a native speaker.

Since you wanted to know the following:
Spoiler:
My ending involved getting the Atlas, the Reuil AND the Gabriel home safely.

Thanks for the praise everyone :p

Just tested out the continue-even-if-failed problem. It's in every mission  :(. I thought you automatically had to restart if you failed a primary objective. I will fix the campaign file and re-upload.

Assuming a mis-quote.

I don't need the full link/path. Rather could some kind soul chuck it up on freespacemods and link it?

There. Campaign file fixed and .vp and .rar re-uploaded.

Hunter has put up a mirror on sectorgame, but it's still the old version. I will add the mirror link to the initial post once the updated file has been put up.

Finally got to start playing and the first two missions are very nicely done. The battlemusic in mission two was making me really nervous for some reason....
I think it would be better to refer to "the nebula" as "the nebula beyond the Knossos portal" or "the nebula beyond Gamma Draconis" at least once in the first command briefing though.

But due to the nature of the mod I was wondering about something. Would it be possible to have missiles, that you fired, no longer available for the following missions? Say you start the campaign with 500 Tornados, you use 50 of them up in missions one and thus have only 450 available for mission two ect. Maybe the carrier could produce a certain number of missiles per mission to make sure you have some available for later missions, allthough probably only enough for just a single fighter, unless you safed them up before.

I think something like that would add a bit of additional spice to such "far away from home" campaigns, if it was possible.

I've run into a bug, at the mission Gate Keeper (the one when you destroy the Ravana with the long-range Mjolnir). The game crashes at the end, when I enter the node, about when the message "Jump drives activated" or w/e should appear. I'm using the latest (5777) nightly build, it may be related. Can anyone confirm ?

Alright. Can anyone else test with the Nightly ? It would deserve a Mantis if the error isn't coming from me only.

Confirmed, crashes at the very end of that mission with that particular knighly.

I've played the hole campaign with 5747 and no problems.

I could imagine it has something to do with calling a wing name via when-argument. Either that or a rather long sexp combining and and or. I will have a look at it.

Strange, I can't seem to recreate the crash (using 5777). Anyway, if it happens just as you get the training message that you can jump out, this is the sexp that causes it:

As I haven't seen the Mantis issue report come up yet, I'll add my bit here instead.

Yes, recent changes were made to training messages in r5761 (http://svn.icculus.org/fs2open?view=rev&revision=5761). Could you please test with the most recent nightly (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=67272.0) before the training messages changes, to confirm this is the case.

Can someone please post the stack trace if they have it for this crash.
Title: Re: RELEASE: Uncharted Territory
Post by: MatthTheGeek on January 07, 2010, 10:31:14 am
The Mantis has been issued.

I'm gonna retest with this build (DLing now), but I was using this precise build when first playing Uncharted Territory before switching to 5777. There was training messages in the other missions, and they didn't crash with this build, and they now crash with 5777.

I've tested with retail training missions and they crashes with 5777 as well.

EDIT : Confirmed, it doesn't crash at all with 5758.

Done, very nice Camp
though your backgrounds in the later part of the champaign are quite minimalistic... if you want I can give you backgrounds for Gamma Draconis and Capella I made a while back...

Spoiler:
Saved the GTT Altas with the crew the GTA Crane, the GTCv Gabriel & the GTtca Reuil (although I lost her in "Gate Keeper"...

Thanks . I would like those. I tried to avoid the huge-swirly-nebula look in the later missions, as I don't remember having that feel when playing the main FS2 campaign (and stars are nice too). But yeah I know they aren't the best. Backgrounds are certainly not my strong point.

Backgrounds are certainly not my strong point.
Really? Then who made that fantastic orange-grey background in that unknown system beyond the Nebula? :p

I agree with the general opinion. This is a really nice campaign. Mission design and balance are very good. A weak point, however, is the length of the missions. Try keep missions shorter than 10 minutes, especially ones where you have to defend Faustus class vessels from bombers with Megabombs. ;)

Also, I missed nameplates on the Gabriel and the cruisers that appear in the last mission. At least the Aquitaine should have a nameplate. Oh, and I found a typo: In "Gate Keeper" in briefing stage 4 (?) there is a whitespace missing between the first and second sentence.

That background and the one in mission 3 are slightly altered versions of backgrounds made by Singh. Come to think of it, I forgot to credit him  :ick:.

As for the rest, Stilljoe7 has been kind enough to proof read the entire campaign so I will make an update sometime in the near future. I will make sure to take care of the things you mentioned too (well except mission time, but I will keep it in mind in the future).

I finished this and saw two endings.....

Title: Re: RELEASE: Uncharted Territory
Post by: ReeNoiP on January 09, 2010, 03:55:19 pm
Nope, that's all there is. I guess the first one could form the basis for a sequel, but I certainly didn't plan for it.

I think I will try to avoid shivans for part of my next project. Their  :beamz: attitude makes them easy, but a bit boring, to use. Terrans and Vasudans have more tactical shenanigans.

Woo! A nice little campaign! :D

One of the few ones where the balance was just right for me that I can successfully defend things! :D

Lots of talking, but THANK YOU for not doing it during a battle like a lot of people do!
That's okay if there's voice acting, but I really hate missing long conversations while I'm trying not to get killed, and then have to break the flow by reading the backscroll.

I like the way you've allowed for things like "ship A was repaired but was then destroyed" and have appropriate dialog for that.  Quite nice.  I do wish a spellcheck had been run though lol.

Haven't reached the end yet but will see what I get first.

Spoiler:
So I got the ending where we're DOOOOOOOOOMED"
:(

So how would I get the other ending?  Do I need to restart the campaign?
Title: Re: RELEASE: Uncharted Territory
Post by: MatthTheGeek on January 10, 2010, 01:35:53 am
Yeah, I only had the ending when you
Spoiler:
successfully evac from Capella.
Where is the event deciding which end supposed to be ? The problem is that you don't have something obvious, like in Rain on Ribos 4. Were it not for this thread, I would never have guessed there are two different endings, and I guess most players will play through this campaign without noticing either, which is quite a pity.
Title: Re: RELEASE: Uncharted Territory
Post by: Nemesis6 on January 10, 2010, 01:44:59 am
I successfully evacced - Didn't lose a single ship in the evacuation. The atlas and all the other ships made it through and I wiped the floor with the shivans.

Now, a complaint - There were a lot of errors, in the spelling and the sentence structure. Pretty damn distracting and annoying. Other than that, it was awesome!
Title: Re: RELEASE: Uncharted Territory
Post by: ReeNoiP on January 10, 2010, 01:55:11 am
The deciding factor is in mission 6. You have to:

Spoiler:
Evacuate the Crane. I tried dropping a hint in the briefing for mission 7 by telling you that the loss of that ship delayed operations. But you only see this if you fail, so if you get the good ending I guess there is no way to know.

Sorry about the spelling and sentence structure  :(. English is not my first language, but as I said, there will soon be a proofread update.

Oh dear, I did that but the transport didn't survive afterwards.  Well, I made a conscious decision not to replay the missions if I fail a secondary objective to see what ending I'd get.  Time to restart =)

Got it off Freespacemods.net, here (http://freespacemods.net/download.php?view.239). I made a thread asking for small GTVA Carriers a while back and someone pointed it out.

Got the bad ending, I was glad that I finally managed to at least save the carrier in mission 5, so I didn't restart.
Just curious, what was the highest difficulty this was tested for?
I thought it was, except the last mission, quite doable on insane which is unusal.
Title: Re: RELEASE: Uncharted Territory
Post by: ReeNoiP on January 14, 2010, 04:35:13 am
I tested it on medium (but I knew what was going to happen). Renegade on easy I think. Don't know about Spoon.

What difficulty did you play on? Insane all the way?
In mission 6 Cancer wing only appear on hard and above. Did you find the mission to be unbalanced? I was not really sure if I wanted them there.
Title: Re: RELEASE: Uncharted Territory
Post by: Uchuujinsan on January 14, 2010, 08:49:07 am
Ah wait, I confused mission 5+6 with mission 6+7
Well, I played on insane until I finished "Division", lowered the difficulty for "Gate Keeper" after a few tries.
I just looked at "Division" again, after 8 minutes gametime the time until arrival to the waypoint (as the Crane was destroyed) for the Atlas was over 12 minutes. Don't think it's probable that you can do this. Just tried ordering everyone to protect the Crane, and defending the Reiul myself, still doesn't work, it dies too fast. Don't know if removing Cancer wing will help there, but I think it probably will (only half the enemy fighters for my wingmen).
Didn't do the reverse of trying to defend the Crane myself, hoping my wingman will handle the Reiul, but because of the cover the Ravana gives the spawning bombers, I think this is doomed to fail.
Especially if you had a bad start, the Reiul gets scratched by the Ravanas beam and begins with 29% Hull (~1 Megabomb hit).

That's why I sacrificed the Cane and Atlas later, and just tried to get the Reiul through, which wasn't that hard.
That came back to haunt me in "Gate Keeper" though, because being ganged by 4 Seraphim and 2-4 Basilisk again and again in forced close combat (no AWACS) was a little frustrating, so I toned it down to very easy (yeah I suck :> ) and finished it.

[edit]
Didn't really say it yet, but I liked your campaign as well, especially that tagging was fun :>

The Atlas is heading for the same waypoint as the Reuil and will jump out along with it, so that waypoint time won't give you an indication of the remaining mission time. Look at the waypoint time for the Reuil instead.

I just played it again (on medium, no way I'm good enough for Insane) and managed to save everyone by having Delta guard the Reuil, Alpha (including me) the Atlas and Beta the Crane (Atlas after evac). Total mission time around 11 minutes.

Hello Guys,

@ReeNoiP:
The first time i played your fine campain on "Very Easy"
On this diff. level I wiped the floor with the shivans. It was very funny.

After your release i tried on Medium. And here begins the nightmare.

First Mission i lost any times the Crane.
then easy going until the Mission the "Seventh Symbol" here i needed your advance and i think 8 or 9 runs.

Next Mission i lost the complete science group, and any times the Crane+Atlas.

Now i think my skills are not good enough for this 2 Missions on Medium.

But this is really no problem i can go back to Easy and all will be fine.

Greets Peter

Ok, I did it.
\o/
Finished division on insane, succesfully protected the Atlas and the Crane until it got evacuated (got destroyed later). Involved a little meta-gaming, but it worked.
Almost died at the end to a stupid manticore :/

That's how:
Send alpha 4 and delta wing (myrmidons) to protect the Reuil, send alpha 2 and 3 to engage the enemy, let beta (ares) defend the crane, later the atlas. Tell all fighters to ignore the Ravana (maybe not necessary, but did it all the time anyway to prevent the wingmen from doing stupid things)
That takes care of the Reuil without problems (alpha 2 and 3 are invulnerable, they will charge first, get attacked by the Maras but don't die, while delta will kill the now defenseless bombers)
After libra jumps in, shoot down 1 or 2 fighters, then go to the other side of the Crane and intercept the first wave of cancer, let one live and make him attack you, then tell everyone else to ignore it. Keep in skirmish, while beta defends the Crane and later the Atlas against libra.
Sometimes a Mara breaks off from the fight at the Reuil, you have to survive and kill it somehow.

Now, on to the next missions!

The really ugly thing about cancer wing is, that it spawns on the opposite side of the Crane, so they will be ignored by your wingmates (those still fight with libra) and destroy the Crane almost unbothered, and even if you attack them 2 or 3 will fly past you.

Very nice work . I think I'll make it so there is only one wave from Cancer wing, that way you won't have to keep that one fighter alive.

Unfortunately you won't get the good ending unless the Atlas survives after evacuating. But if you don't want to replay the whole campaign again, you could always ctrl+shift+s at the techroom and play through the good ending (mission 8b and mission 9).

Wow Uchuujinsan this sounds as when you play a strategy game like C+C  :D
No i am not so an strategic player. I think this is the reason why i am loose in higher Diff. levels.

For example: BP:forced Entry i never win without cheating.  :doubt:

But it was me a pleasure to test your campaign. Every time again  :pimp:  :)

Oh, the Atlas did survive, the Crane didn't (I hope it's not necessary to keep that doomed and disabled ship alive until everyone warps out :) )

The idea about cancer wing will help a lot I think.

Just a little heads up if anyone feel like replaying the campaign. I have just made an update including with better spelling and grammar, nicer backgrounds in the later missions and a few other things.

Links have been updated in the initial post.

Post by: Stilljoe7 on February 05, 2010, 04:02:49 am
There are quite a few commas still missing, really, but I only wanted to change things that stuck out too much to ignore. Apart from a couple of lines, the text is is all ReeNoiP's. I just changed spelling, and punctuation where I thought it was absolutely required. Some of the phrasing isn't quite colloquial English but I thought it was effective the way it was.

I found we can't use apostrophes or semi-colons in briefings!

Anyway, in 300 years they probably won't speak as we do now. Our English will sound to them about as odd as Shakespeare does to us...
Title: Re: RELEASE: Uncharted Territory
Post by: TopAce on February 05, 2010, 10:07:04 am
You can use apostrophes. I figured you mean double quotation marks (" "). This can be circumvented by typing $quote and semicolons can be inserted by typing &semicolon.

Most campaigns use contemporary English. It hasn't been an issue that campaigns used colloquial language yet. It's fine the way it is. Making up all sorts of neologisms just to make the language they use sound futuristic can be confusing, especially for non-native speakers of English. I myself consider language in FreeSpace to be utilitarian: it's crucial for the player to understand what is going on.

When you type "" in a briefing text, FRED will change it to $quote for you. It will still appear as "" in game.

I think you can get away with semicolon as well if you write $;.

I played the campaign entierly and it was quite cool.
However, some of the phrases, especially in the last missions, seemed a bit strange...
Especially that "You are violating orders." when the Argo moves to rescue the AWACS.
It sound like a child trying to be serious, but crying at same time. "GEEZ This is so damn unfair, lolwut :(:(:(You're violating orders. So come back. Booya!"

I really liked the carrier model, too ! However, the nameplate's font looks strange.

I've scratched and clawed my way to the last mission. A class act all the way--in particular the tough call that the player has to make in regards to the Atlas.

On a general note, I salute ten years of great campaigns. I still have a backlog to catch up on; Storm Front is next!

Excellent work, sir! Highly enjoyable missions, and very good story.

One thing: On a few missions some of the Mymidons are missing one of their primary weapons by default, and have default secondaries loaded.

Let's see... well, going through the mission simulator, I found only one, but it seemed like more the first time through:Gate Keeper, Beta only had one primary weapon.
Possibly intentional, but strange: in Seventh Symbol, Beta was equipped with Prometheus-Rs, and in Division Beta was equipped with Flail rifles.

I just replayed it. Basically what happens is this:

Spoiler:
After the Bathin arrives, the Emmerich and all my wingmen jump out when given the order by the Reuil to do so, but the Reuil and the Crane stay where they are. They don't move. When I jump out (as the "jump to coordinates" directive is up), I get the apparently successful briefing about the crew of the Emmerich and all that jazz, but the music is failure music. Then I can't progress. :(

I'm using the 3.6.12 build and VPs.

I can't seem to recreate the problem. All ships jump out fine for me and I continue to the next mission.

Spoiler:
Maybe the engines of those two ships got destroyed in mission 1 and they can't jump out. That's something I hadn't thought about. I better fix this in the next version.

I am trying this out with the 3.6.16SSE and it is a really nice campaign, but in the mission where you have to disable the Demon class Destroyer's sensors and scan its Nav system, regardless of what fighter I use, the scanning does never commence. I have tried every conceivable angle and point, but my ship never initializes scanning, so the mission fails once the Demon jumps out.

I also saw the "bad" ending and I have 1 nerdy issue that really doesn't matter overall

I ran into a technical problem on mission 6 just now.

In the nebula when the GTT Atlas is supposed to dock with the GTA Crane it never does.  The Atlas says it's going back but then when it gets to a certain waypoint it just sits there in space.

I'm playing on Media VPs 2014.

I temporarily switched back to the 2012 mediavps and it worked...the Atlas docked with the Crane and everything went normal.  I was playing on a 3.7.3 nightly build for both cases.

I remember Macfie saying a while back that sometimes docking points don't always transfer correctly to certain ships in the 2014 vps.  So maybe an Argo transport can't dock with an AWACS in this case.

For what it's worth, I tried playing this with the latest nightly build (while using 2014 Mediavps) and still had the problem I've posted about.  The Atlas, in the 6th mission, won't dock with the Crane so it's impossible to get the good ending this way.  The only way around it I've found is to temporarily switch to the 2012 mvps for this one mission.

When I switched back to 4.6.X MVPs the music would play in those missions for some reason.

ShivanSlayer, did you have any trouble with the mission where you're supposed to go against orders to escort the Atlas to dock with the Crane (in the nebula)?  I was able to complete that mission but the allied Deimos that comes in at the end seemed to come in later than usual.
