Title: changing mod.ini file
Post by: chronicking on September 20, 2010, 05:39:05 pm
hello.  i've been mia for awhile playing other games but have returned to give this great space sim another go around.
i've gotten everything updated to all the new stuff as well as i can tell.  3.6.12 exe / launcher 55.g
i have no trouble playing the game with the new media vps  but just installed FSPORT 3.2 and want to start playing from the beginning[ campaign 1] .  i saw that cardinal spear was the earliest mod in the fs1 campaign era and wanted to start with that.
ok when i installed the mod i looked at the original mod.ini file that came with it

[multimod]
secondarylist = fsport,mediavps:

i changed this to

[multimod]
secondarylist = fsport,mediavps_3612;

cardinal spear loaded thru the fsport and started ok but im wondering if i needed to include the "fsport_mediavps"  folder   in the mod.ini file.  only to take full advantage of the mediavps in the fsport_mediavps  folder or is this inculded automatically?   when i just play fsport for the original campaign in fs1 i load "fsport_medivps" from the launcher  and it's secondary list in the mod.ini file reads "secondarylist = fsport,mediavps_3612;"  i know im using the  fsport mediavps because im loading the actual folder as the mod for campaign 1.  but should i worry about playing mods thru the fsport and not using the fsport_mediavps files that come with fsport   or are they automatically used when  doing anything with fsport?

probably dumb question  but i want to make sure im getting the best effects from the effort you guys have tirelessly put into this project.
ty in advance for any replies.

There's nothing automatic about the way FSO handles mod folders. The only active mod folders are
- the one you've selected via the Launcher
- any folders included in the mod.ini of the selected mod.

So yes, if you want to use the FSPort MediaVPs, you must include their folder into the mod.ini. FIRST.

Though what you've done now isn't particularly dangerous. Using the FSPort MediaVPs without the regular MediaVPs would have been quite wrong, but this... shouldn't be.

cool.  i guess i should have just asked if there's anything in the "fsport_mediavps" folder that i need to improve the game that "mediavps_3612" doesn't have and if not, why even have it?  i've played cardinal spear twice now thru fsport with the "fsport_mediavps" folder both included and not included in the mod.ini file and i honestly can't tell a difference in the two methods.

so far the mods ive d/led for fsport have  "secondarylist = fsport,mediavps_3612;"   none include the "fsport_mediavps" folder  so it just made me speculate if it's worth the 216mb it occupies.

ty for the reply tho.  i just started playing the 1st campaign thru fsport and it looks great!!!  much better than the way "cardinal spear" looked.  i don't know if it was just because it was an older mod or i just had something wrong.    who knows?!?!?   but fs1  looks great thru fsport so all is well for now.

Haven't taken a look at the FSPort MediaVPs, but I'd guess they contain prettier versions of things that appeared in FS1, but not in FS2. The Valkyrie, for example.

I change the MUltimod like this
[multimod]
primarylist = fsport_mediavps;
secondarylist = fsport,mediavps_3612;

I play this campaigns ;  Silent Threat: Reborn v1.1, CardinalSpear, fsport-awakenings and fsport-destinyofpeace, until now i haven't found any error or warnings and the ships look better so i will play the like this until i found an error i will post about it.

Sorry for my spelling
