Re: Vasuda-Toasting-Cutscene / FINAL-Release
Have out tried an antisotropic map instead of the phong? I played around with it lately and got nice results. I also use some fresnel effect for reflections but tuned to about 5 percent but it depends on how it works with the other maps.
I liked your backgrounds nebulas. Where are these from or did you use some C4D fx for it?

Re: Vasuda-Toasting-Cutscene / FINAL-Release
Very nice cutscene. Very awesome. But there is two things. Such as the use of a much better subspace vortex effect. I'd research Axem's effect, or take a look at the ones in this thread which are being made by VA.

The other thing is i think the shots of the vasudan city before it got blasted were overused. I mean, i got to see that city 4 times before anything happened with it. It should have been seen only twice, the first time being after the lucifer is in system and you use the shot of the vasudan city where the ships begin escaping, and then the last shot of the city you need to see is the beam coming down from the sky with those 2 satis transports that got away.

One last thing is that it would be cool to at least see the lucifer firing its beam at another region of the planet when the video ends. So far this video only centers around this one city getting wiped out. It says city bombardment, not quite planetary-wide orbital bombardment.

Other than that, the visual quality of the video was great, so was the lighting and everything else, i liked that shivan cruiser in there too (more shivan cruisers and destroyers accompanying the lucifer would have been really cool though...while the lucifer's blasting vasuda it's busy doing that and am sure it can't take out all of the transports planetwide leaving. Get more ships in there and show the shivans big numbers completely over-doing an assault like they usually do).
Every pilot's goal is to rise up in the ranks and go beyond their purpose to a place of command on a very big ship. Like the colossus; to baseball bat everyone.

Seriously, dude. When it comes to cutscenes, you're my new hero. I'd salute you in some manner, but I'm too damn lazy to get off this ****ing chair. Nevertheless, I love the cutscene.

Oh, and also: mirror.

Re: Vasuda-Toasting-Cutscene / FINAL-Release
@ lars
i think you mix up there shomething. phong shading has nothing to do with anisotropic mapping:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phong_shading

it describes how to interpolate specular highlights over polygon-edges so that they look round....unfortunately it can happen that real reflections are not smoothed so you can have sharp edges like on the low-poly-lucy in the shot where the scorpions are starting, below the superlaser. i tried to put lucy into a hypernurb, but the model does not allow that. i got poly-salat......
ironically the reflections look great on the main armour-plates on top of lucy....so i decided to keep it this way as compromise....

the nebulas are from the VP-files. i had nearly the same look with some c4d-shaders, but the rendertime increased too much (highest quality as it is now 2-4 minutes/frame, with shader-sky about 3-6 minutes!)

@s-99
vortex:
the subspace-effect was oftenly discussed and i have not more than the media-VP-map of it. unfortunately i had problems in generating one with c4d-shaders.......but VA said he would make an highly advanced map of it when he has time, but it seems he has no ;) if i receive it one day (with 90 frames would be great), there will be a revision of course. exchanging it is not a matter of time then ;) only replacing the map and rerender the frames showing the vortex....

second shot:
yes. i thought about it.....i decided not to fire again as it would be too much difference to the cb-ani. therefore i added 3 big fires on the surface of the planet, showing that lucy fired in the meanime more often than the one shot....

fleet:
there are minimum 3 cain-cruisers with lucy ;) other, bigger destroyers are not there, as i.e. the EVA has been destroyed in the mission before the cutscene....the only support i have information about (mission: Playing Judas) are some cain- and lilith-cruisers IIRC....
but if all want, i could include a demon-class (ready for action....converting complete) in future revisions (when i got the vortex map ;) ) but this would not fit into the storyline. the reason so many transports could escape IS the fact, the demon (with all the fighters) was blown away imho....

but thanks that you like it anyway ;)

@lobo
thanks for mirroring :)

edit of original post:

included an ogg-format-file. transformed it with VLN. did not transcode the file, just another container format. so the quality is exactly the same as provided with the avi-file.....Xvid (4000kbits) + mp3 (192 kbits CBR).

but when i play it with VLN the sound is now overamplified with normal equalizer-settings.....do not understand that.... :wtf:

Yeah, I doubt that method of conversion will work.  It certainly won't work in FSO.  What you need to do is compress the original cutscene to OGG format.  This means the video has to be OGG Theora and the audio has to be OGG Vorbis.

Re: Vasuda-Toasting-Cutscene / FINAL-Release
i thought ogg is just the container-format!? you can put different codecs in it. they just have to be compatible with it. and xvid as well as mp3 is comaptible if the HP´s are right i´ve read about ogg.....

so im more confused....

furthermore i tried to compress the sound as vorbis....it sounds even bad in VLC

edit:
i tried different setting during compression...nothing helped. it seems to be a problem of VLC itself, as the sound switches ok when the volume is reduced....

nevertheless i have another problem! FSPORT is not able to show the OGG-movie....game says, that fs was not able to display it......with AVI it works fine

Re: Vasuda-Toasting-Cutscene / FINAL-Release
I upload a vp which includes:
  • freespace.fc2. I've edited IceyJones original one so now it loads vasuda.mve instead of vasuda.avi. (I've just "normalized" it ;) )
  • cutscene.tbl to make vasuda cutscene appear in Cutscene window (although you'll have to play with a new pilot through the campaign). I've decided Vasuda.mve was in CD nº 2 but :V: were so busy they forgot about it  ;).

Place it in your Fsport mod folder.

OTOH for Theora ogg converter see http://www.theora.org/. Grab ffmpeg2theora (although I haven't used it).

Edited: New updated vp pack following Goober5000 indications here. Now Ancients4 is played in sm2-10a (instead of sm3-01a) and Vasuda is played in sm3-01a.

IF YOU HAVE TROUBLES WITH FS2:
  • Please, please, please, READ and UNDERSTAND the sticky threads in FreeSpace & FreeSpace Open Support board.
A lot of people are willing to help you, but, as anyone can understand, seeing the very same "issues" repeated again and again can become quite depressing. Please, spend a bit of time trying to solve the issue by yourself.
    (Lobo deserves a monument).
  • Then, if you aren't still able to solve your issue, feel free to ask for help in that same board.
FYI, most of the troubles are caused by wrong mod installations which lead to either missing data or undesired cross-effects between them. Always follow the mod installation instructions and keep a clean FS2 installation as explained in the sticky threads. Two additional links about how the game handles game data:
  • If you think that you've discovered a bug, mantis it.
Provide as much info as you can, and try to narrow it down. A lonely "FS2 doesn't work" is not a good report.

Both problems are actually the exact same thing.  FSO is not able to show the OGG movie because the video must be OGG Theora and the audio must be OGG Vorbis.

Yes, OGG is just a container format.  But the Vorbis and Theora codecs are part of the OGG project, and they are required by FSO.

Are you converting the sound from mp3 directly to Vorbis?  You should convert from the original source (the .flac or .wav file) to Vorbis, otherwise you will lose quality.

I recommend switching the Vasuda and ancients4 cutscenes.  The Lucifer destroys Vasuda Prime after destroying the Galatea, not before.

What's up with the occasionally jerky frame rates? Or is that just the high video quality overwhelming my old rig?

It's like that on mine, too. That's apparently a bunch of frames cut out to keep the cutscene in sync with the music.

yeah.....in the close flyby, paning to the emerging fighters it is a bit slow....also my pc (x2 4600) is dropping some frames here....but i tested it with different quality-settings, means very low bitrates and this problem is still there. it seems the codecs are having problems with the full-screen motion picture.... :hopping:

If I haven't missunderstood anything in the campaign file, I've just maintained the order that IceyJones' freespace.fc2 shows.

So could any FS Guru point which mission should show Vasuda cutscene as intro movie?
