Crashing when enemies appear on the first mission
Hey everyone of the Freespace community!
Thank you for this great modification of one of my favorite old games :D

I've been making some posts in the release thread regarding my failing
troubleshooting so hopefully theres someone here able to solve it.
The original 3.6.9 version of FSPort works like a charm, no doubt about
it but I would really like to enjoy some of those MediaVP's fully.

Issue with any graphic options: Having any graphic options on
results in an instant crash as soon as i click "commit" after a level starts.
If I'm quick I can move around for about 1 second. Freeze. No debug report.

Issue without graphic options: I tried restarting a new game with a
new pilot name without any graphic options. Fully stable in the training until
the first enemy is supposed to appear in the first mission. Freeze. No
debug report.

I tried deleting the profile, and make a new one, skip by the training missions
and load up the first level. It worked! And continued to play until the level to
escort Plato started. (SM1-05A.FS2 according to the debug)

Other mysterious crashes:
Clicking PVI Karnak in the Tech room causes a freeze in any mode without
any debug report.

I've desperately been trying to pin point down these errors with
troubleshooting but I'm failing. Disabling sound has no effect either.

Please, is there anyone with a little more experience in these errors who
can help me?

I'm suspecting broken models or the like but I have no checksum to
compare with. If anyone would know the corrupted models related to any
of my issues, I have added an attachment with win32 console checksum
programs both md5 and tth if you have the time to compare file checksums.

Computer Setup: Intel Core Duo 1,86 GHZ, ATIx1600, latest DX,
latest ATI mobile catalyst, windows xp sp3

Kind Regards Nick

I'm no expert but

have you tried replacing the fsport, and fsport_mediavps folders with newer d/ls?

Re: Crashing when enemies appear on the first mission
Thank you for your help Borg. But I'm afraid that I have.

I downloaded all of FSPort and the FSPort MediaVPs from the release thread again today just to be sure.
Tried the latest build. Tried to backtrack a bit.

So far I have tried these builds with the same results:
fs2_open_3_6_10d-20081217_r5008-Wanderer.exe
fs2_open_3_6_10d-20090309_r5096.exe
fs2_open_3_6_10d-20090311_r5097.exe
fs2_open_3_6_10_debug-20071028T.exe

Re: Crashing when enemies appear on the first mission
The Karnak does indeed, because of its super-high quality, take a very long time (about two minutes IIRC, depends of your PC power) to load for the first time. At first, I thought my game was frozen as well.

So, just have patience, and if it still hasn't showed up after a minute or five, post again. About the others, I don't know.

Re: Crashing when enemies appear on the first mission
@FreeSpaceFreak

I'm afraid the Karnak doesnt appear to load.
I waited 5 minutes without anything happening.

@The E

Sorry, it wont write any log file because the whole applications
freezes without any debug process being able to write. I have
tried waiting for 15 minutes without any use. I have to kill it
through task manager to escape the fullscreen.

Windows dumprep wont dump it either. It's like the program is
waiting for input or stuck in a loop.

Sorry.

Any other clues?

Do you have a 3.6.10 that isn't a debug version?

Re: Crashing when enemies appear on the first mission
Well, a log file should be written, regardless of FS freezing. It should usually be stored in <Freespace Directory>\Data\.

@ Locutus of Borg

Yes, same trouble there.

@ The E

Aha! Thank you I didnt notice that. I thought it was the file in the \freespace2 folder
I have attached 2 logs from two different compiles. One older and one recent.

Wanderer build (older)

First error in the log (splash screen error?):

Recent build:

Speech is skipped on all nightly builds. I read in the release log so the first error is to be expected and I wont post it.

It also reports a scripting error:

Wokka!  Error opening file (scripting.tbl)!

And then the cursor error again:

Different files appear to be loading from different folders on drive E:\ could that be something to do with it?

Can you post a screenshot if your FSO installation folder?

Re: Crashing when enemies appear on the first mission
No, that's just a debug message, refering to the location on Wanderer's comp where he stores his sourcecode. Why these messages are there, I don't know, however.
The scripting error isn't relevant, it just complains about a missing scripting.tbl, which is to be expected (AFAIK, no such tbl was delivered with the Port, and isn't really needed, anyway).

Re: Crashing when enemies appear on the first mission
Thank you for the continued responses!

Alas "The E" is right. Wobble73 its from the source code.

However if anyone could help me by checking their checksums of all FSPORT files I would greatly appreciate it!
If you dont know how to check md5 checksum please put "md5.exe" and "md5.bat" from the zip attachment in your Freespace2 folder and click "md5.bat".

This will save the checksum of files into "checksumlog.fslog"which you can put here on the forum.
The batch file I made saves some time checking MD5 checksums. Its a normal text file so you can just copy and paste the text.

Takes about 2 minutes to run, please wait until its prompted that its done.

This way I can quickly compare if we have the same files and that there is no corruption in mine.
Thank you for your help!  :)

Kind Regards
//Nick

sparky_fs2.vp
stu_fs2.vp
fsport-missions.vp

I'm going to find some mirrors and redownload them and try again tomorrow. Hopefully it will solve this issue. Reporting back tomorrow...

Re: Crashing when enemies appear on the first mission
Greetings again, still more trouble.

sparky_fs2.vp is the same, i must have misread.

fsport-missions.vp is the only one theyre supplying in the release thread. Either your's is an older version or the file was corrupted before compressed by the releaser.
md5: 009e837b93ddf50589da03e5045940b5

stu_fs2.vp from manual download here: http://fringespace.org/downloads/scp/retail/stu_fs2.vp
is also the same as mine.
md5: e88f0e0011b3e525a5ad625933684c03

It appears that my files arent broken after all. :(
Either the release downloads are broken or there is some other bug.

Is there anyone with more suggestions for this issue please?

Have anyone tried the latest release who can confirm it bug free up to mission (SM1-05A) on version 3.6.10?

Hash Tool download link: http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=61737.0;attach=9340

Big thanks to everyone who has come with suggestions so far
Kind Regards
Nick

Re: Crashing when enemies appear on the first mission
I don't know if you have installation issues but nevertheless your main problem is your GPU: X1K series

More info in this thread: http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,61576.0.html

or

here: http://www.hard-light.net/wiki/index.php/OpenGL_Shaders_(GLSL)#Known_issues

(Or just search through HLP, there are a lot of threads about X1K series)

IF YOU HAVE TROUBLES WITH FS2:
  • Please, please, please, READ and UNDERSTAND the sticky threads in FreeSpace & FreeSpace Open Support board.
A lot of people are willing to help you, but, as anyone can understand, seeing the very same "issues" repeated again and again can become quite depressing. Please, spend a bit of time trying to solve the issue by yourself.
    (Lobo deserves a monument).
  • Then, if you aren't still able to solve your issue, feel free to ask for help in that same board.
FYI, most of the troubles are caused by wrong mod installations which lead to either missing data or undesired cross-effects between them. Always follow the mod installation instructions and keep a clean FS2 installation as explained in the sticky threads. Two additional links about how the game handles game data:
  • If you think that you've discovered a bug, mantis it.
Provide as much info as you can, and try to narrow it down. A lonely "FS2 doesn't work" is not a good report.

Whoever Hanlon was: Never attribute to malice that which can be adequately explained by stupidity.

Re: Crashing when enemies appear on the first mission
YES! Finally. Thank you!

Hey guys, a really discussed issue and you haven't noticed it...

(And as I say in my signature, Ziame, you haven't read the stick threads...  :hopping:)

I bet that all the problem is your GPU. You've got a X1950 and X1K series don't run fine with shaders, although they are supposed to support them (blame ATI not SCP).

As I suppose you have WinXP 32 bit, (neither Vista nor 64 bit), you can try the next hack:
  • Update Catalyst to the latest version (9.whatever).
  • Locate and download and old version of Atioglxx.dll (or something like that). I think there are links for old versions in the sticky threads, in Lobo's signature, and scattered through HLP threads.
  • Copy it to your FS2 folder. In this way your system will use the updated drivers BUT FS2 will use the old one.
  • Run the game. Expect possible bad performance.

Or you can also disable shaders (-no_glsl flag) although you'll lose normal mapping and game overall game looking will be worse.

I tried the atioglxx_.dll first but that didnt work. Download it here if you wish to try it: http://dialux.kilu.de/fs/atioglxx.rar
For me it crashed if I had the DLL there.

Turning off the shaders appears to work now! (-no_glsl) However for those reading this note that some compiles do not support this.
If your compile do support this your launcher will most probably have an option available in the troubleshoot section. It will only appear on some compiles which is probably why I missed it. See attached image.

If any more trouble arises I will check back here again.

Thanks again!
Kind Regards
Nick
